8:15 AM
yo de le ee oo!

2 hours later…
9:46 AM
@ElendilTheTall Hi sweetie! In an effort to take best advantage of some days coming up that may actually be warm enough for me to open the door, I'm trying to flip/flop my sleep. In a few hours (2 or 3 maybe?) I'll be up for my "morning".

10:05 AM
ok hon

1 hour later…
11:28 AM
tum tee tum
<potters about the room>
<sweeps floor>
<fluffs couch cushions>
<puts coffee on>

<sweeps finger on the upper surface of the bookcase, 2.20 m off the ground, and watches the dust on it, pointedly not looking at Elendil>

11:42 AM
@rumtscho you've spent too much time in Germany

What a MESS!

hey, you lot left it like this last night
I'm not your damn maid

My next batch of food pics are going to tell about my new favorite pasta.

I can hardly contain myself :P

oops:)
I haven't had coffee yet :)
This stuff:
It's called Campanelle

11:50 AM
'Country pasta'?
are you referring to the shape, the sauce, or both?

That's a store brand Italian import. It's very thick, it takes 15 minutes to boil and you have to use a really big pot 'cause it releases so much starch that it wants to boil over.
The shape of the pasta.

are, campanelle as in campanology
ie. bells
wiki says intended for use in thick sauces or casseroles
interesting

That pic is from:

A: Should I be scared of chicken livers? Can I make them less scary? (Ragu Bolognese)

JolenealaskaOMG this turned out great! Really good. I ended up using half of the liver called for in the recipe, otherwise I followed it to the letter. There is a richness to the sauce that I don't think it would have had if I had skipped the liver entirely, but I can't taste it. For a bit of extra prote...

I've used it now for the Ragu, tuna casserole and spicy pasta salad.
Soon I'm going to try it in mac n cheese.
It's just lovely.
So toothsome.

Yes, I imagine it would be nicely al dente
I was bought a pasta maker recently
I have never made fresh pasta before
I will give it a try over the weekend

I love making pasta! Roller type?

11:59 AM
yeah
unfortunately it only has cutters for spaghetti, so I will have to hand-cut other shapes
but that's no biggy

Q: Can anybody help make homemade pasta foolproof?

JolenealaskaI can't even count the number of times that I have followed recipes for pasta using a food processor, only to discover that no matter the care I took with the measurements, my dough was just a bit too dry (add water). Now it's too wet, (add flour). Aargghh, I could have traveled to Italy by now! ...

I really do it like I say in my answer, and it turns out great every time.
In my opinion, the cutter is useless. Hand cut it so that it looks homemade.
I want to try to hand cut and roll the campanelle shape, but I don't know where to begin.
Hmmm...
OMG that cheese thing (where you commented a few hours ago), looks awful!

12:21 PM
@Jolenealaska yeah. not exactly haute cuisine
@Jolenealaska some old lady in Naples probably makes it look easy

@ElendilTheTall I'm sure!
OOH That egg yolk ravioli I make would be a great thing to photograph on my "swanky restaurant" set.

This is how you make campanelle:
:D

AH! The incredibly expensive extruder! (dang it)
Oh well, I think my next homemade pasta will be the egg yolk thing.

I have just read your pasta answer
aside from the fact that answerer obviously knows you well (¬_¬)
i wonder if your rule holds true for British flour

12:31 PM
in lieu of napkins I guess

Probably, but I'd try to get a hold of Italian 00 if you can.

I have some
if it's still in date
i find british flour is way more absorbent than American
based on american recipes

How much protein is in your basic use (what we would call all-purpose) flour?

about 10g

That's about the same, a bit on the low side. Maybe 2 parts that and 1 part strong flour?

12:36 PM
10% for Plain (AP), 12% for bread

Can you easily get semolina flour?

Yes, I have two bags of it
use it for non-sticking pizzas

I've never used it for pasta, but I have some.

regarding the cheesy chips, I was once in a 'greasy spoon' cafe when the chef placed a plate of chips on the pass and announced 'cheesy chips, no cheese'
so... chips

I'm going to try it 50/50 with 00 and my technique next time I make pasta.
lol
Hi Cerby!
I think this is the one that I would try to emulate:
In places like that, do they take the plate from the kitchen and put it on top of the plate on the table?

12:51 PM
yes

The number in the plastic stand is odd in this table:

Ooh food!
@ElendilTheTall The word police would like to have a word with him.

It's a bit odd that we've actually been chatting about food here for a few hours.

@Jolenealaska looks fine to me
it's called a 'six'
you have to move on to your other hand :P

heehee :)
wow:

1:04 PM
@Jolenealaska Freaks!
A different standard would indeed look better on that table.

Hi

Hi Rummi
with my particular difficulties with space, I think this is how I would frame "restaurant table" shots.

Yum!
I like Japanese fish.

it does look good
me too

Hi Rummy!

1:16 PM
So that will probably be my egg yolk ravioli on the swanky restaurant "set". That'll be fun and totally doable.
Oooh I just had a fun thought...brb.
I a need bottle like this:
A tablecloth like this:
And a candle like this:

1:52 PM
I think maybe I'm not quite ready to be up yet. I think I'll try to go back to bed for a couple of hours. Cya soon everyone.

2:07 PM
Before going back to bed I checked my email
I've harped on it a few times that Americans are ridiculously prudish about sex and nudity, but this takes the cake.
She wore that lovely dress to her high school dance and was told by the administration that it was too revealing. She had to wear her coat for the entire dance.
Utah, so Mormons, most likely. Jeesh. G'night again!

2:30 PM
Why are these people so obsessed with sex? It's not healthy.
Moreover, why do they think god is so obsessed with it?!
@Phrancis hello there

Actually, it's obvious that the dress doesn't fulfill Mormon modesty requirements. But if the school requires the students to comply to them, she should have been warned before she bought the dress.
as for god coming across as an obsessed micromanager in several religions - I guess that, if it looked weird to the followers, they would simply lose their faith.

I think the main problem is they've never actually stopped and thought about it

@ElendilTheTall Oh, they have

your average joes haven't
you think the average catholic who shuffles dutifully to mass every sunday has ever stopped and really thought about how weird it is that they are supposedly eating magic bread that turns into the flesh of a 2000-year-dead jewish guy?

with "average joes", you mean the people who benefit most from being micromanaged?

2:52 PM
'benefit'

3 hours later…
5:48 PM
@Jolenealaska Very silly. Even if the dress were too revealing, why would it be it their problem?
Should could have draped a stola over her shoulders, I'm sure that would have looked very nice.
A black one to fit her shoes and belt.
By the way, tiles in a sitting area is not OK, unless it's a castle.
@ElendilTheTall Religions are obsessed with sex. All their silly books are about it.
Is it any wonder that the most religious countries Google for the most bizarre pornography?

@Cerberus it could be their problem if it goes so much against the common decency in the community that it disturbs the occasion.
Imagine an African woman strolling through a major European city topless.

6:11 PM
@rumtscho Well, why should I care so much about this woman?
Isn't it her problem?

@Cerberus you personally don't have to. But she will probably be arrested for breaking the law.
No, it isn't her problem

So?

societies function in large part because of communication
clothes do represent non verbal communication
and different societies have different understanding of some concepts like decency
if you transplant a member of a given society into a different society with different understanding of "decency", there will be very few people who think "oh, interesting, she's from a different culture"
the majority will react the way they'd react to somebody from their own culture displaying indecency
and this is disturbing to both the locals and the newcomer and prevents smooth functioning of the society
so, the culturally sensitive thing to do when your clothing habits are very different from your hosts' clothing habits is to blend in more, avoiding clothing which for them communicates extreme ideas you don't plan to communicate to them

The whole concept of "decency" is part of the obsession of religious people with sex.

No, decency exists among societies where the deities don't prescribe how to have sex

6:20 PM
Still, it is often an important part of the religious obsession.
Of course religion didn't invent most of its practices.

hola

Hiya.

6:41 PM
is listening to a child star singing Christmas songs

thats odd in January...
i hate most christmas songs

7:34 PM
Heh.
They're the corniest thing in the world.

they get on my nerves so fast

@Cerberus Fashion advice and interior decorating in one message?? Really?

@rfusca Normally, they get on mine too.
@Jolenealaska Sure!
My interests multiverge widely.

My nose is stuffed up, my eyes are itchy, and I have a cough :(

@Jolenealaska ebola?

7:48 PM
Colds really suck.
Nose spray and paracetamol help.

@rfusca I think so. This is one my last visits to the Frying Pan I think, don't fight too badly over grandma's cast iron.

@Jolenealaska Noooo we can't afford to lose you!
Eat a monkey or something.

@Jolenealaska no promises

ha! Is that a tested ebola treatment? I think I'll look first my nose spray. I have some somewhere. That and even better, I think I have some generic Dayquil

dayquil is just distilled monkey

7:52 PM
Ha!

What is it?
Booze?

The Vicks company has been making a night-time cold medicine for decades called Nyquill.

Is that Eskimo?

When they came out with a daytime medicine, they named it something else.
But everyone called it dayquill, so finally, they gave in and officially changed the name to Dayquill.

Haha.

8:00 PM
Acetaminophen (paracetamol), Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant), Phenylephrine (decongestant)
Good stuff, and I found it! I may survive yet.
Found my nose spray too.

(simplified version of issue) supervisor puts in change ticket "Can an account manager please indicate if this should be blue or red." , Account manager puts on ticket "Approved", ticket comes to me "What does approved mean, blue or red?", goes back to supervisor "The supervisor has approved, please update.", back to me "UPDATE TO WHAT???!!"

Horrible!
Actually talking to people is sometimes more efficient...

yes, but part of the problem is that this supervisor is a moron and its way past time that his stupidity was documented

Ah, so this is ammunition. Not bad.

its not intentional ammunition

8:15 PM
I love the lids. Vicks Does NOT make store brands! My store brand has exactly the same ingredients, same packaging, 1/3 the price. It amazes me that people actually for the name brand. But there it is, my hero.

2 hours later…
10:17 PM
Hair dryer + chimney charcoal starter = charcoal ready in 5 min or less rather than 25 min

Well! That's sounds like something that should be posted on main!

Mmhmm
