12:00 AM
@Asmyldof Do you think that if I can distort the optical output of a screen, then I can repair the need for close up glasses for others

Anybody know how to figure out if my cheap cell phone will work in another country?

No, because it's a focal issue and a loss of pixel issue. You can only make the image less defined, whereas you need over-defining, which can't be processed due to diffusion in following optics and low res pixels

Supposedly it supports "CDMA/Tri-Band LTE".

@ThePhoton depends on which phone and which country

and "CDMA Bands Class 1/10/0, LTE Bands 25/26/41"
Does that mean anything to anybody?

12:03 AM
Not yet

@Asmyldof You seem very confident. But I propose that one could project an image, that when viewed without correction, the image would be clear.
granted, a distorted image

That would require anti-light to be possible in your screen

@Marla Only if you can also control the optical phase of the light reflecting from the image.
You could do it with a hologram.

much like when Ray Dolby proposed to record a distorted image onto audio tape. The world was agahst

@Marla audio phase is a lot easier to control than optical phase.

12:05 AM
Yes, but
What He says

@ThePhoton it sounds North American only
the lack of GSM support's a pretty dead giveaway :P

@Shalvenay Thanks, that's kind of what I thought.

@ThePhoton Yes, however, with the proper distortion, I am wondering

Also, our ears are much smarter than our eyes, when it comes to complex phase processing

@Shalvenay I thought GSM was the old stuff. My old candy bar phone had GSM. (but probably on the wrong frequencies for other countries)

12:06 AM
@Asmyldof Very good, the mind can correct too

@ThePhoton GSM is the old stuff (2G) -- but the lack of support for it means they don't care aobut anything whatsoever outside N. America

@Marla Point is, we have a sensor in the front of our face that is by default extremely indiscriminate about phases and tuning, with a single pinhole lens system

@Shalvenay so what exactly was the solution ? Getting the other "master" or other source off of the line ?

@Marla rebooting got the other "master" off the line

I struggled with the image. Glad you solved it

12:10 AM
Our ears are designed to detect phase shifts and volume imbalance and have echo and compensation and weird constructs

@Asmyldof The mind can accept and translate so well
Interestingly, translate, what we "think" is the correct answer

You know those parallax 3D screens?

@Asmyldof I am not challenging your comment

When they finally make those so they don't give you headaches and an actually proper image, I think we may be 30 to 40% on the way to your idea
Schaaf says I should hide under the couch until a princess comes to rescue me

Does she have to kiss yo before you become human ?
you

12:17 AM
@Marla I think we all know I'm not going to be human any way

oh, I didn't know that a human had to be annointed before it became human. . . . . Don't be silly, of course you are human

@Marla beep boop

although you do have some peculiarities

Do you mean the floating?
I can walk if that's easier to look at

are you trying out for the "most human" of the year ?

12:21 AM
I tried for least annoying in my house last year and still lost
:P

You are intriguing and at the same time frustrating at the same time. You really should just be you. Did you know that girls like a guy just because he is what he is ?

Nah, they used to.
I feel like flying somewhere far away
for no reason
But it has no wings :/

Have no rum
:'(
Going to organise my tomorrow stuff and off to bed
:-D
Nite

good night Asmyldof

5 hours later…
5:16 AM
Hi fellow engineers, I had a quick question about control system terminology.
I'm working on some documentation that talks about op-amp feedback instability, and I need to describe it terms of the damping [something].
In this context, what is the correct term? damping constant, damping factor, damping ratio?

5:42 AM
@Shubham There's damping ratio.

morning
@Asmyldof Doesnt FakeMoustache work in Eindhoven?

3 hours later…
8:37 AM
@jippie dunno

9:00 AM
moooh

9:16 AM
mööööph?

9:43 AM
exactly

2 hours later…
11:14 AM
@PlasmaHH Any hints as to what process normally creates or updates resolv.conf?

11:24 AM
Oh and also, what else can I put in your IPA box?

@Asmyldof generally that file is either managed by the distro specific scripts and processes (in case of static configuration; those might include processes like NetworkManager) or in case of dhcp, by the dhcp solutions scripts. the most common ones seem to be dhclient and dhcpcd which then can start scripts configured in special directories (just like the rc.d startup scripts)
@Asmyldof do you have a 3W LED with particular good CRI? The wife isn't convinced yet that ordinary lidl LEDs won't do so I could show her the difference...
@Asmyldof is someone overwriting it? if your system has audit support you might be able to figure out which process it is
/etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/dhcpcd-hook* scripts are those on my suse system btw.

11:41 AM
@PlasmaHH Don't think I have any reliable CRIs in stock at the moment, no
@PlasmaHH No, it's in the tmp folder, so it gets cleaned out, but I don't know why the old distro worked for both stat and dhcp, and mine, while I touched only Dropbear, doesn't work for stat
Just have the cheap LEDs, they're stable enough, sure, but not really a good reliable curve out of the box
Still looking for a new supplier for "this is the actual, exact curve" LEDs
And then I'll find the one with the best curve for whatever purpose my customers need it for

@Asmyldof the path to the resolv.conf is hardcoded into the libc, and usually is /etc/resolv.conf ... when you say its in the tmp folder, does that by chance mean it is generated there and just not copied over? or is it linked from /etc/ to the tmp folder?
@Asmyldof ah ok, would have been nice to get one from someone who knows about these instead of ordering from the interwebs and hoping that the promises are true ^^

@PlasmaHH It's symlinked from etc to tmp
And I opted to not touch anything more than I had already promised to put my finger into, so I just decided to ignore that, since for me it worked primo
But never tried static IP at home

if your libc has debug support, you can add
options debug
to the resolv.conf and it should output something

You mean the resolv.conf that gets cleaned out at startup?
As in, see who cleans it, or?
Because..
How does that help?

ah, then I got the point where it gets cleaned wrong
usually distros have points where they completely clean tmp ... some do it at bootupt, some do it at shutdown...

11:56 AM
@PlasmaHH either way, if I change it and call reboot, it'll get regenerated next boot
And there is probably a reason for that, and I don't want to also discover that reason, so I would strongly prefer to just make it so that when it goes into static IP it also creates it somehow

you could possibly hack aruond this cleanup by creating that file with the immutable attribute... anything wanting to touch it will probably not be able to handle that

Yes, I can even just put it in /etc/ but again, I don't want to touch the cleanup, because undoubtedly there is an undocumented reason for it, because the default distro for this "system" comes with the normal /etc/ situation
And I want to avoid getting even more calls even later in the year about other issues caused by an old rexolv.conf or whatever

might make debugging easier though? or can you boot with whatever contents of that file you want?
ok, so just to refresh my memory, there seems to be something messed up... what are the symptoms of the dns problems? getting no response? always? sometimes?

12:52 PM
@PlasmaHH DHCP did proper DNS'ing
Static didn't
I saw in the log he sent it coldn't find Resolv.conf
He made a resolv.conf by hand with a dns server in it: worked
But old system, pre-me, always worked fine with static IP
So now I think DHCP nicely creates a resolv.conf, while static doens't
Yup, the system at my place cleanly receives the nameserver tokens from my router
and puts them in tmp/resolv.conf
I think maybe they put it in tmp (ramdisk as it turns out now) because it needs to be boot-generated and yaffs cannot be trusted? At least this version

for the dhcp setup?

Yah, my home just runs on DHCP, no fiddly stuff

or in tmp/ramdisk because at the point where they needed it, the yaffs was not writeable yet? often things are mounted read only and later remounted rw

I've had shit with the yaffs stuff
but, well, eh
maybe, either way
I'm not happy to fiddle with it, lest I invite 3 whole new avalanches on myself

so it comes down to how that distro creates the /etc/resolv.conf in case of static setup...
mine would probably create it from information in /etc/sysconfig/network/config or so...

12:59 PM
Hm
Any easy way to retrieve the DNS information for a router when not using DHCP utilities?

in some distros they would save the created resolv.conf elshwere and upon wanting to generate a new one compare if the one there is the saved one. If not, they will not generate a new one, assuming the user knew what he did and manually edited it

I can just add something to the start script that dumps them into the resolv.conf always

dhcpcd-test ethX

doesn't have that :'(

hm, is it running dhclient for dhcp?

1:11 PM
In a way, I think, I believe that's inside busybox
udhcpc is supported it seems from

1:23 PM
hm, that doesnt seem to be able to show the information, however it has this -s script file option.... it seems that it sets some environment variables that this script then will process... if you run it with a script that will simply otuput all environment variables, my guess would be that some of them are dhcp options

1:35 PM
hm
The default script adds the dns' to the resolv.conf
But....
:/ what did I break in case of static configuration

my guess is that after the tmp erasure, nothing ever recreates that file

Yes, but, then, why does the old image work fine?
And/or have any good ideas to have it created for a manual IP situation?
External tools that I can compile myself allowed
(<= 1.5MB of tools at least)

@Asmyldof I would probably to some comparison and check how the file comes to life there...
@Asmyldof where does the manual situation get its information from? if it is only ever configured by you, I would put a resolv.conf at some place and copy it to /tmp or so

1:54 PM
hm
I think I have found something

does it make funny noises?

Noh :'(
No, there's a network file on the SD, that configures DHCP=1 or DHCP=0
and also has a DNS, DNS2, IP
I'll tell them to just add some DNSs there when they disable DHCP
And echo the contents of those values into the resolv.conf
sort-of-fix

well, yeah, they need to configure dns in some way anyways, so there or somewhere else... doesnt really mater

Just asked the guy "Is it right you change this file to achieve it?"
I think in the old system someone just made the resolv.conf tbh, since there is nothing about DNS in the net script

"everyone will be using dhcp, we will deal with this later"

2:02 PM
mhm

2:24 PM
Does möööph have some kind of meaning?

it is kind of the transliteration of the sound honking makes and is used in some situations where it is supposed to be funny

Aaaaah\

like I poke my finger at your nose and say "mööööp". Funny after a few or more beers
(or if you are 4 years old)

Or apparently a 27yr old woman

can happen too

2:26 PM
Everytime I ask what a möööph is I get a completely random and incoherent question back

so she kinda lieks you...

shrug

We also have some derivative words that are used in interesting contexts:

2:41 PM
....
k
Only a few more functions and my FW will be ready for initial demo.
Then begins the horror of @#$#$%@$%!^&%%^# MDIO

1 hour later…
4:18 PM
There was no way that video could have NOT been German

4:43 PM
@BrandenBoucher I dunno, with all those Ö's, I thought at first it might be Turkish.

4:55 PM
lol
I don't know if I can classify that video as SFW

5:49 PM
morning

mornin all

6:04 PM
I'm beered up!
Not very well though :/

6:36 PM
I think I know how to fix that

No beer
:/

Get some.

Fair point

6:55 PM
Going home then!

1 hour later…
8:02 PM
argh, another scratch on my wristwatch :/

@PlasmaHH can easily be solved

@jippie I dont think I want to know your definition of easy in this case...

@PlasmaHH I haven't scratched my watch in over ten years.

you are storing it in a drawer in your desktop?

no .. but the idea is pretty similar

8:41 PM
@Asmyldof did you buy multiple of the cheap chinese flux pens? Are they ok? You might want to give me one for testing, optionally filled ;)
though probably in the process of moving I will find three or more old ones under some cupboards... ^^

9:15 PM
@PlasmaHH ah yes, I can fill a fake BonPen for you, no worries
Prefer water based or IPA based?

those that I had to far were all alcohole based I think, so that is what I would go with

night
Why are close votes from the main page not shown in the summary of the review queue?
I've been close-voting several questions today and it still shows 0.
on my profile page it says 10 for today ..
grmbl

@jippie Sleep waffly
@PlasmaHH Those you used before will probably also be rosin based, I only have none-rosin Organic base. 2.1.3 and 2.2.3 from Multicore brand
Because those can actually be easily cleaned using IPA or even a soft cloth

ah, thats fine, I have a bit of 223 gel that I am often using, its fine

I'll make it 223 then, X33-12i from Henkel/Multicore/Loctite
datasheets availably online

9:27 PM
good. henkel makes flux? or is that all one big company now?

The latter
Been for ages

never noticed... henkel is known mostly for its glue here

As is Loctite....
Which has been Henkel since the dawning of... something
I think under the name of Loctite they bought/merged it with Multicore

in the end, everything is probably a daughter of alphabet ^^

I guess I can deduct €10,- from your budget for that
:-P

9:33 PM
hehe... I have always read and heard about multicore stuff but never used it... I only rarely saw it in some shop and always was thinking the logo looks so old fashioned, who knows how long the stuff was lying around there

:-D
mmmm 60 hour week
But, got a lot done

the last time I had a significantly more than 40 hours week was in my army times, that was some 168 hour weeks though ;)

My record has been 122, just as a nerd :-)
Only gun holding I have done was for the experience/research at ranges

(I don't count the times at university where I wasn't working int he sense of getting payd)

If getting paid is a requirement I haven't even got many 45+ weeks
As in paid directly per hour
But the 122 was 40 as employee and 82 starting my company

9:38 PM
nah, generally paid for whatever you do...

2nd week in

the hardest thing coding stuff was at some airbus project, 28 hours without much break, all in a hangar at ~40°C in some spanish backlands

Oh, I have it the other way around, day and a half in -5
But with a builder hut with coffee nearby
Advantage is the last 6 hours you don't feel the cold all that much anymore

and all to prove that those goddamn morons that built the hardware had a massive hysteresis of almost 0.6mm in their machine

Though I don't doubt I was within a hair of having operable frostbite
Thing is, with morons, you see, that they think 0.6mm is negligible

9:46 PM
they clearly had no idea about the dimensions involved... I mean that thing is like 72m long, how much lever there is to amplify 0.6mm into "doesn't fit at this end anymore" ...
not to talk about the increase in fuel consumption
there is a reason why for the A340 longliner they went back to a german company ^^

9:57 PM
blah blah arrogant blah blah :-P

1 hour later…
11:17 PM
hmpf, thats annoying... I dont have any new smd transistors, only used ones... and none of them works in my oscillator circuit :/

11:31 PM
ok, guess what doesnt work when you hook up power the wrong polarity...

That's a good way to make sure things never work again though

ah, everything is fine

QUICK, I need a confetti emoji
How about the metal horns instead: ,|,,|
cause, you know, that rocks cause everything is fine.
k, going back to coding now (as I realize my headphones are on but I don't even know how long it's been since I haven't had anything playing).
