but I can't think of what to call the 2 AC lines on an AC device

like in DC you call them positive and ground

@W5VO I was thinking probably 12V battery and use a buck converter to get a stable 9V supply (or similar with a boost converter but in my experience buck is more efficient), to power a mobile wifi repeater for about 12hrs.

@Littlegator not sure if phase and neutral is common in english, it is common in Dutch

and the third wire would be safety ground

@jippie "hot" and neutral are most common when talking casually about wiring your house in the US. Phase and neutral is clear to me, but it might be used more by engineers than by electricians.
