Hmmmm, that feeling when you wan tto just keep asking questions, but the chat is so dead you'd feel like you'd be intruding! :D
As a guy who's been interested in info sec all my life (i'm 32).... but never got any further than just simple things like checking out whois info for a boss and researching the companys mentioned... how would I learn more?
I guess programming (or my lack of skill in such) is my biggest weakness.

there's a generic knowledge to have. And programming is most likely part of it

yup
I mean I can understand programming concepts when someones explaining a problem, canaries, overflows, etc etc etc
I just don't write very well at all.
I guess I kind of use that as an excuse for myself too - I can't code, therefore I don't go any further...

well, there's a lot in sec that does not involve programming, but at one point you'll have to take programming into account, so you need to know what's going on
Like you can't really get into security, if you don't have the slightest idea about crypto imho
I don't mean like being crypto-nerd, but at least grasp the concept, know what to expect, how it works with a sufficient level of detail

Well, I understand crypto to the extent of say the unix & linux guys, but no way near how some of the info sec guys talk about it
I'm unlikely to be breaking any kind of encryption anytime soon ;D
(my god work is so dead - took my first call after being here for 2 hours).

me neither
that's for specialists
But I can usually understand if a vulnerability is critical or not when I hear about the details of it

11:23 AM
Yup, I can do that \o/
I understand what a key collision is etc, even if I don't understand how they figured it out.
I think my biggest issue is testing/learning stuff myself. I could theoretically setup a lab at home, but finding the time to do so and actually doing so, is kinda hard.

@djsmiley2k we have quite a few posts on that :-)
Coding is one good way. Or running through the various free online courses and labs

yup, the second is what I'd like to do
but time.... and effort :D
and a lot of the time if it's 'attacking' a windows system, I don't have one to test again
