@Gilles It would take some verification, but I think that the area where registers are dumped upon context switch is kept by the kernel in "kernel RAM", i.e. a non-swappable area.
(and I believe that answer to apply to all mainstream Unix-like systems as well)
Although swapping these slots would be technologically feasible, it would take some effort and creativity and would lower performance, so I doubt even Linux kernel maintainers have done it.
If you send that question to Sec.SE, he will get an answer about how, indeed, he over-engineers things.

12:40 AM
@ThomasPornin yes, I know this is the case under Linux
@ThomasPornin Both under and over. If he doesn't have encrypted swap then some tidbits of confidential data are likely to leak to disk one way or another.

2 hours later…
2:17 AM
@JeffFerland You get tired of us blaming you everytime Facebook goes down?

2:34 AM
@TerryChia I read that at first as s/"get tired of"/"got fired for" :D

2:48 AM
@TerryChia Also "real name" issues. Yup.

@JeffFerland Really? Like what?

1 hour later…
4:06 AM
@RoryAlsop @raz thats only counting the above-ground rooms. They dont publicly admit to the 67 floors underground, in the secret basement.
@Lucas'Paul'Kauffman yeah, why?
@JeffFerland wow, congrats, and good luck.
oh maaan that is real oooops, I shouldnt be internetting at this hour.
@AviD I should delete this. Quick before anyone sees it. I hope no 10ker reads the history though....

4:35 AM
@AviD only room owners and mods can read history.

5:07 AM
@JeffFerland You know, Google is just down the road. Sure, I've heard the the food's not as good as at Facebook, but at least we don't make you use PHP. Just sayin'

@tylerl Well hell if you're just down the street we should at least have lunch. I'll in downtown Mountain View for a while.

@JeffFerland absolutely. I live in mountain view, so I'll be around.

5:53 AM
@JeffFerland heh that's quite funny actually, didn't know about it
BTW TildalWave is my real name, I gave it to me I should know
glad you're out of smurfland tho

@AviD Mo - Rah - Tor - Ium! ;-P

@RoryAlsop DMZ has its FUS-ROH-DAH now?

@M'vy Lol - nurrd

8:45 AM
@TerryChia @AviD like me, I can read history... oh dear :op

@RоryMcCune boy dun good, eh :-)

@RoryAlsop I think we should narrow the morotorium down to just @AviD :op

@RоryMcCune No fair! You're making me curious.

@RоryMcCune hahahahaha - definitely

@Arperum just imagine @AviD being his usual off-colour self and you'll be reasonably on target

8:49 AM
Of the various browsers available to me here I am amused by which ones are vulnerable and which ones aren't - using the freakattack.com page

9:31 AM
@Flyk it's all @AviD 's fault

I'm not particularly avid about that

10:00 AM
@Flyk I see what you did there ;-P

@RoryAlsop You'd have to close your eyes to not see it.

welcome to my studio
calamity zone today
unboxed my new controller and immediately drowned it in coffee
might as well have just soaked it in coffee and sent it back unopened

@Flyk :(

@Flyk gakkkk
@Arperum exactly

fortunately it was only the break out box that got wet
and it seems to have survived

10:04 AM
@Flyk presumably it was not yet powered on, so you can dry it out with no damage, hopefully

I'm smellucinating

no doubt at some point the knobs will get sticky

I have a sinus infection and I keep smelling the weirdest things

@RoryAlsop no it was powered and in use

@Flyk and still okay? wow

10:05 AM
@RoryAlsop all of the clever electronics are in the main unit
this is just a box full of knobs and lights

@Flyk that's normal...just wipe and start again :-)
@Flyk fair enough
(I didn't star it, by the way)

it's not as pretty as the one I wanted but it's still pretty smart looking

@Flyk It's pretty

I'm currently exercising my boredom
I've found a record label in a genre I have never released in
approached him as a ditzy wannabe and slowly flooded him with tracks

@Flyk that looks nice

10:07 AM
it started off with average ideas with a bunch of mixdown problems

@Kisunminttu That's super annoying. I regularly "remember" a smell, and smell it again, it's super annoying.

muddy basses, etc
and then he gave feedback, and I sent him a track that had broken riffs but still pretty average
and then he gave me feedback, asking why I was working on two tracks at once
and I gave him four tracks, all with different problems

you're mildly evil - I like it

@Arperum IKR?

and then I gave him six completely different tracks from those I'd already sent, completely mixed and mastered
with the email "what about these? :D"

10:08 AM
There's this smell I knew but couldn't point my finger what it was. This sort of chocolatey vanilla smell.
When I was at work and cut some of that restriction band for taking a blood test, it hit me.

once he sends me his next response, I'll send him the first six tracks, finished, and see what he does

@Kisunminttu That's better than my case :( more then half of the time the smell memory reminds some horrible stench :(

@Flyk lol

The rubber smells like chocolate vanilla for some reason. And gym balls in middle school smelled exactly the same

@RoryAlsop this really isn't any different from editing a few hundred posts in my head
@RoryAlsop it sounds nice as well
possibly more important than looking nice
one day, I might take apart all of my synths and spray them purple

10:12 AM
@Flyk Favorite color?

yes

@Flyk cadbury's purple?
I want a long leather trenchcoat in purple
but can't really justify it

@RoryAlsop probably, maybe slightly darker

orange and black is more likely, just due to my current band branding :-)

@RoryAlsop make it double sided
That way you can have both

10:16 AM
@Kisunminttu Does not matter. He only uses the B-Sides anyway

@RoryAlsop one thing I will say, the build quality makes the big knob look amateurish

@Flyk wow - that's impressive

My dog can't sleep on his spot anymore. Because it's occupied all the time. By a bone that he put there.

@Kisunminttu And moving the bone would be to much work for him I assume? Or does that require an extra dog-bone relationship manager?

@RоryMcCune that looks lovely

10:30 AM
why would you put a talk back mic in a rack mounted unit

@RoryAlsop I know it sounds frickin' awesome, it'll just be a question now of which VR headset I end up with

@Arperum I think it has to do with his nature of not fighting for what's his. He would abandon his food when my cat went to see what he was getting.
So I guess he thinks that the bone took his place. And the bone is the boss now.

@RоryMcCune That article is all kinds of want.

I guess I'll have to be the dog bone-relations manager

@Kisunminttu Your dog needs a dog-anything relationship manager.

10:38 AM
@Arperum Funny thing is that he still has his dangly parts, so I can't really tell him to grow a pair...

@Kisunminttu Tell him to grow an extra pair.

@Arperum : D

@Kisunminttu Would it help if I donate the pair of my newest kitten? (In spirit anyway) That animal has enough for five, he's been hit by a car before, broke his back leg, so now he has a slightly funny walk, and he is fighting for dominance with the other cat who is twice his size (and winning), and on the place it grew up it actually claimed dominance over everything.

11:00 AM
@Arperum Whoa. Cats, man. They rule.
2

11:48 AM
cats are evil
cats are the sort of animal that would eat you after you died, just to spite you for not feeding it

@Flyk I don't care at that point, because I'm dead. That way my dead body still serves some purpose.
@Flyk Not denying that. But I still like them.

cats don't like me as they don't like being in the presence of something as evil as themselves

@Flyk Cats don't care about humans that's all.

@M'vy 'course they do, they care about us as sources of heat and foot and tickles :)

@RоryMcCune If you call this caring, ok.

11:55 AM
@M'vy well they care when I don't provide these things ..

@M'vy heat and food and tickles are important things
not even talking about cats

Cats look down on us. That's what is being said :)

I don't get looked down on by cats, cats move out of my way when I'm coming towards them

@M'vy well they are superior. They've conned another species into providing them heat and food and tickles whilst all they have to do is swan around and look cute

except that one cat that likes sitting in the middle of the road when I'm trying to park
one of these days I'm going to accidentally run it over, and it will be the cats fault

11:59 AM
@RоryMcCune :)

at least I'll say it's an accident

anyway cats are mostly a good thing

raz
@AviD Well yeah you never publicly address your secret floors.

12:14 PM
@Flyk I concur
@Flyk my cat does that when I'm reversing into the driveway. But she moves at the last second. I think it's a game of chicken

12:25 PM
@Flyk My cat would've loved you. Zero evil.

@AviD I read it, I read what you said. Moratorium, eh? Right.

12:41 PM
@Simon It's a "Do what I say, not what I do" kind of thing, typical father-figure behaviour

@RоryMcCune Today, I am officially dadless. I don't want @AviD to be my new dad.
I'm gonna be honest with you all: these days I feel like giving a second chance to my ex-dad @Iszi.

@Simon you should apply to @RoryAlsop to be your new Dad. He's already fostering @Flyk so you'd be a brother / sister musical pairing :op

I stepped on a cat's tail today :/

@RоryMcCune I'm not sure if I want her to be something related to me.

@Simon but you'd be a very musical pseudo-family

12:47 PM
@RоryMcCune With all different tastes, that would just end up in endless arguments because nobody could ever win.

@Simon well @RoryAlsop would automatically win by being the father :op

@RоryMcCune Injustice! That's not the kind of family I want to live with.

I love our new chatroom topic. If the DMZ were a Silicon Valley startup, that could be our elevator speech.

@Xander I think @AviD is planning a startup.

@TerryChia He should. Clearly he'll do well. He knows all the startup words.

@Xander needs more patronising titles for developers

Q: Possible Injection to PHP PDO

Jean GkolExpert says that PDO is one of secure scripting from mysql injection. I have read the manual about it and do some little research. And here, I'm trying to get ID value from URL paramater, as in: <?php include("pdo_con.php"); if (isset($_GET['id'])){ $id=$_GET['id']; $id=strip_tags($id);...

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU ANSWER THIS QUESTION?
WHY WHY WHY WHY?
People need to stop being greedy for rep and stop answering bad questions. That's a good example of RTFM.

@Simon because it's not about the rep it's about helping people
not every question needs to be wiki-worthy

1:34 PM
@Ohnana I posted the answer to his question in the comments 10 hours before the other guy posted his answer.
So yup, it is all about the rep.

@Simon which isn't helpful
you mad that somebody actually answered his question rather than just lmgtfy?

@Simon Crap. How am I going to dodge this this time?

Let's make something clear here, I'm not mad and I'm trying to understand why.
@Flyk And how is that not helpful?

@Simon ok here's how it works

@Iszi You tell me, possible-future-non-ex-dad.

1:37 PM
"I have a problem" -> Google that problem -> Stack Exchange isn't in the top 3 links -> ask question on Stack Exchange -> question gets edited and tagged -> Stack Exchange SEO -> something magical occurs here -> Stack Exchange is in the top 3 links -> next person has a problem -> Googles that problem -> Stack Exchange provides the answer

@Flyk That's just silly, asking the question is way slower than going on php.net to search PDO.

for the same reason that people providing answers going "LOLOL I ANSWERED IT ON MY BLOG HERE", providing an answer in a comment basically saying RTFM <link> is not helpful

Also, I just googled "php pdo injection" and the very first link was:
256
Q: Are PDO prepared statements sufficient to prevent SQL injection?

Mark BiekLet's say I have code like this: $dbh = new PDO("blahblah"); $stmt = $dbh->prepare('SELECT * FROM users where username = :username'); $stmt->execute( array(':username' => $_REQUEST['username']) ); The PDO documentation says: The parameters to prepared statements don't need to be quoted; t...

@Simon It's way faster to rewrite your entire app in a real programming language.

@TerryChia pls

1:39 PM
@Simon dear god let it go
have a coffee or something

@Simon is this a duplicate?

@Flyk Not on the same site though.

@Simon How about reminding you that one of your potential new dads is in a metal band? I mean, how cool is that?

@Ohnana ONE SHOULD NOT ANSWER A HORRIBLE QUESTION. THIS IS MY SECOND COFFEE.

@Simon "This is answered here on <site> <link to stack exchange site" is helpful
because it keeps the traffic on Stack Exchange

1:40 PM
@Iszi It would be cool if I were born 30 years ago.
@Flyk I don't work for SE.

Bah. Kids these days have no appreciation for good music.

@Simon neither do I, but why bother taking part in an online community if you're not doing it with good intentions?

@Flyk That's a question you should ask to probably 25% of this community.
PS: I did help the dude, he even said "thanks".

@Simon rise above it

So I'm gonna go ahead and say that my intention was good and he was satisfied with the way I reacted.

1:43 PM
@Simon cool, but, you're still whining about other people actually answering the question

@Simon You actually helped someone? Call the press!

@TerryChia lulz you donut.
@Flyk FA986FYD78FTDS6FTASGFADSF

@Simon -.-
jeez, take a chill pill
preferably a cyanide flavored one
containing 99% real cyanide

I'll take a damn donut pill.

1:45 PM
you've taken too many of those, you've turned into a donut

I watched the first Thor yesterday. IT SUCKS.
IT'S CHEESY.

@TerryChia oh, more than 5 ts, it must be good.

@Flyk Are we talking about @Simon or his mom?

why would I talk about @Simon's mom
there's nothing to say that hasn't already been said

all pls moratototototototorium

1:46 PM
@Simon after your bitch fest you can stfu

Hey @Simon, did you know collegehumor made a video about your mom?

@Flyk I wanna kick you in the face.
With a donut.

I'd like to see you try

Kicking you with a donut implies that I can do it from a distance.

the aerodynamics of a donut prevent that from being any meaningful distance, though

I am disappointed - @Poly is not telepathic... security.stackexchange.com/q/83083/485

Look at him browsing InfoSec.SE and not coming in here. I blame @AviD moratorium.

omg there's an encryption protocol called axolotl
cutest crypto evar

Also, did you see that? A bad question and nobody answered it! It's like if that's how things are supposed to work.

@Simon I left a comment on the PDO one, pointing them at the SO post. cc @Flyk

@Simon Well it's not a real question anyway

2:14 PM
@RoryAlsop Cheers.

it may be we can migrate it there for closing as a dupe

@M'vy You're not a real question.

@RoryAlsop We need close as dupe of another site :P

I'll wait and see if anyone votes to close for that reason

@Simon ...

2:17 PM
Was that mean? It wasn't meant to be mean.

@M'vy oh noes someone multiplied you by i

@Ohnana clever
I like it

@RoryAlsop my math jokes are limited in scope but they're almost always accurate

@Ohnana I'm afraid I don't get that one.

I feel horribly dumb for not getting the joke.

2:19 PM
Are we supposed to get it?

I think that's the point of jokes.

I don't know. It might be complex.

An imaginary number is a number that can be written as a real number multiplied by the imaginary unit i, which is defined by its property i2 = −1. The square of an imaginary number bi is −b2. For example, 5i is an imaginary number, and its square is −25. Except for 0 (which is both real and imaginary), imaginary numbers produce negative real numbers when squared. An imaginary number bi can be added to a real number a to form a complex number of the form a + bi, where the real numbers a and b are called, respectively, the real part and the imaginary part of the complex number. Imaginary numbers...

@Ohnana I know that, don't get the joke.

@Arperum if mvy isn't a real question, he must be an imaginary one

2:20 PM
Oh, right :)

@Ohnana Yup. I get it now. And I feel even dumber then before.
ALso: then/than is annoying. They are the same in Dutch. I have a feeling I use them wrong in 80% of the cases I use them.

@Arperum so does 80% of english speakers
you're in good company

@Ohnana Not sure about that, some english speakers are definitely very much not good company.

Then is for deduction. Than for comparison.

hey liberia discharged it's last ebola patient
in 42 days they'll have the all clear if no one pops up

2:33 PM
@Ohnana Very good news, I hope they don't have any more cases

3:30 PM
you know what pisses me off? people using autocomplete to make a point
google tailors your results so you are quite literally consulting an echo chamber

@AviD So, how popular was that request anyway? Show us the poll results.
@Ohnana So, what you're saying is, if someone types "kid" and Google auto-completes with "die porn", then it's the user's fault?

@Iszi most likely, becuase google's doesn't autocomplete profanity and adult searches. So that would be a browser suggestion

Or, like @ScottPack would probably type "bears" and Google would autocomplete with "shirtless gay"?

i get "bears bears bears" and that is slightly worrying

C'mon guys, if that's not obvious starbait I don't know what is.
@Ohnana Yeah, it doesn't make so much sense as "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" I guess.

3:39 PM
@Iszi apparently it's a band and a stupid youtube video

@Ohnana I'm not sure which one I'm less surprised about.
Well, this is interesting. I was going to hop on over to Meta.CodeGolf.SE for something, but I forgot to type the SE part. And apparently, Meta.Codegolf.com is just this picture:

@Iszi lol wut
codegolf.com seems to be going under maintenance

@Iszi are they celebrating the Forth Rail Bridge's 125th birthday too?

3:57 PM
@TerryChia did I see Wolverine in that trailer for the Avengers...

@RoryAlsop The what?

Man, someone was definitely thinking when they scheduled that... Finish the "Forth Rail Bridge" on the fourth.

4:14 PM
Hey @Simon wanna say YOLO who needs tables and then smack yourself?

@TildalWave Unfortunately I can't do that, I don't live the #yolo, I embrace it.

you're a disappoint

Mmm, rubber hose reptrain

@JeffFerland i've always thought of it as wrench cryptop

6:07 PM
@raz BTW - after some work last night, I'm switching all my hping3 tcl files over to python and scapy
I've used hping3 for years, but scapy does surpass it in every way

raz
@schroeder Oh wow
I've never used hping3
but I'm glad Scapy is doing what you want

I remember doing a compare a couple years ago and felt hping would suit my needs better, but wow - scapy is where it's at
and they have a Scapy3 prototype for Python3
nice to see very active development

raz
6:31 PM
When I was attempting to learn it their API wasn't well documented.
Not sure if that's improved or not.

6:49 PM
Microsoft succeeded in plaguing their own documentation site for .NET system classes with a script that takes up to 5 minutes to complete.
While the script runs, the page is stuck; none of the links works. Killing the script also leaves the links unusable.

raz
that sounds like fun

The only thing that still works is decompiling the .NET classes -- actually, you already need to do that since the documentation is often incomplete, wrong, or both.

7:20 PM
So, @ThomasPornin, have you decided on which language you are using to write your SSL library?

@DavidFreitag I have begun it. It will be in C.
I'll try to make it utterly compatible with embedded systems, so as little system dependencies as possible.
e.g. no malloc().
I'll also try to implement it as a state machine, for more integration options.

@ThomasPornin Awesomesauce. Imagines @ThomasPornin gathering his set of chisels and a massive block of granite as he begins the process of carving out his SSL library

@DavidFreitag Well, that's almost like it. I develop with vim. None of this IDE nonsense.

7:39 PM
It looks like I am now officially 0-for-3 on release-upgrades from Ubuntu 12.04LTS to 14.04LTS. Two cratered during the upgrade process itself, and one left so unstable it had to be put out of its misery 30 days later.

@Xander I have found all releases of pure ubuntu to be completely unstable past 10.04
Also Unity is such crap

@DavidFreitag I've never had any trouble with 12.04, and the one clean desktop install of 14.04 that I still have (and am using right now) has be fine for me. But other then that...Yeah. My one successful(sorta) upgrade to 14.04 that I had to trash a month later I replaced with Debian, and this server VM that just crapped itself is, I think, going to be CentOS 7 in its second try in life.

@Xander Have you tried any of the other ubuntu flavors? I have always been partial to Lubuntu. I have successfully upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04. I have also heard great things about Xubuntu.

@DavidFreitag No, I haven't. I should though.

@Xander Lubuntu is fantastic because it is extremely lightweight out of the box. The first thing I usually do is remove leafpad and install gedit because leafpad is useless
Xubuntu is more feature-packed but isn't held together with nearly as much duct tape and tears as stock Ubuntu is.

7:49 PM
@DavidFreitag My first Linux ever happily booted and ran within 8 megabytes of RAM. I cannot say that Lubuntu is "extremely lightweight".
However Lubuntu is indeed a lot lighter than other Ubuntu variants.

@ThomasPornin Alright, I should say in comparison..

I use Ubuntu / Lubuntu on my machines (plain Ubuntu on servers, Lubuntu on desktops and laptops). Works well. Including upgrades.

Yes, ubuntu server is nice because there isn't much to screw up.

Yeah, for my one running 14.04 instance, I've had to allocate 6GB of RAM. Though I actually blame Chrome more than Ubuntu for that.
@DavidFreitag Ubuntu server is what just cratered on me. I must just not have the touch.

My laptop runs Lubuntu. I have 8 GB of RAM. I have deactivated swap and I dedicated 1 GB to a ramdisk. Works well; never hit the RAM limit (even with a 2 GB VM launched).

7:51 PM
@Xander Ah, that sucks :\

But I don't connect to Facebook either, so my browsers tend not to grow fat.

@ThomasPornin A friend of mine runs Lubuntu on his laptop with one 512MB ram stick in it and it runs just fine

@ThomasPornin And you have no Twitter. My Twitter tab was up over 1GB this morning.
@ThomasPornin That's a nice configuration.

@Xander The ramdisk is very fast (noticeably faster than my already awesome SSD) and the automatic cleaning upon shutdown is convenient.

@ThomasPornin Yeah, that's a particularly nice touch.

7:54 PM
It is also good to decrypt sensitive secrets (e.g. my GPG-encrypted file of passwords).
With a ramdisk and no swap, I know that the data is never stored permanently.

8:11 PM
@AviD I'm hairier and not as clearly defined as he is.
@Iszi That would be "bears gay culture" thank you very much.

@RоryMcCune Good track.

@DavidFreitag indeed

Dragonforce is my goto when I need to get a lot of work done right now
The entire album that TFaF is on is usually the one, but sometimes I like Ultra Beatdown too

9:29 PM
Imagine a world where the Ruby runtime and GC wasn't a total piece of junk.
cc: @RоryMcCune :-P
You need to get those Ruby folks on the ball!

10:16 PM
@ThomasPornin You have a repository somewhere where I can track progress?

10:27 PM
@RоryMcCune they are playing at Download so the kids are delighted. I've seen them play live and sadly they aren't great. They can't do that speed live.

11:04 PM
I heard that variable assignment will be removed from JS in favor of `npm install <variable name>` when a variable is needed. Is that true?
