A: Why shouldn't we roll our own?

Anthony MaiThe example cipher Phil Zimmermann cited: A simple pseudorandom number stream was added to the plaintext stream to create ciphertext, is easily thwarted. Some asked why. Here is why: Step 1, feed the cipher plaintext of all 0's. Since 0 added to any number is same as the number un-changed, it c...

This is the last link I ever expected to see. github.com/Microsoft
3

7:03 AM
@TerryChia I like the description

@TerryChia why? MS is a big supporter of theirs, and VS even integrates with it natively.

@AviD It's more about Microsoft actually have an open git repository. Not about GitHub in particular.
Also, the description.

@TerryChia like I said, Visual Studio has native Git support. pretty darn good support, too - probably one of the best (and most intuitive) UIs for Git.
@TerryChia ah yes, that one is nice.

@AviD What's wrong with the command line? ;)

@TerryChia do you use a command line for coding?

7:17 AM
@AviD No, but I use it for git.

@TerryChia why? IDE FTW.
source control is an inherent part of the IDE experience.

@AviD Meh. I was a IDE user a year ago but I moved back to simple editor + CLI.

you suck.

@AviD unix4lyfe #simon
2
Heh, just found a site where www redirects to HTTPS but the root domain doesn't.

Terry is now a unix neckbeard? Will wonders never cease?

7:22 AM
@RoryAlsop Unix is an alias for linux for those under 30.
Because seriously, who still uses an actual unix? :P

@TerryChia those over 30?

@TildalWave Freaking neckbeards.
I bet they still write perl. Tsk.

now that you mention it, I probably should shave a bit
perl is anti-yolo, it's like assuring you have something to return to in your next reincarnation
mostly because it'll be a proper PITA during your first lifetime

@TildalWave But how will you ever read what you wrote in your first lifetime?

ermm... too early man, too early
brain overflow

7:34 AM
Most of the machines in my house run a Unix. Only a couple are Linux.
I have no neckbeard, but am considerably over 30
3

@RoryAlsop What an understatement.

@AviD people who actually write code don't want to have an “IDE experience”, they want to write code

This TypeScript doesn't even look half bad, watching that intro video now

@RoryAlsop you're counting BSD on your iPad as Unix aren't you :op
interesting survey on Engadget today. they asked people what tablet of the main available ones they'd like to own, and the Surface Pro 3 is coming out on top by a decent margin... engadget.com/2014/07/23/…
hey @AviD Just realised you should ask your new mob to get you a Pro 3 as a works laptop :op

7:50 AM
That's because it's currently all the talk, if they asked a month prior to new iPad release, that'd be the top spot then.

@TildalWave I guess, but this would be the first time that an MS tablet has a really big buzz I'd have thought..

Frankly, if I wanted a new tablet, I'd also go for Surface Pro 3 at this point in time.
I have no use for it tho, so I won't ;)

@RoryAlsop you seen rocksmith?
^ also another kid who can play (even if it's just a game, looks quite realistic...)

@RоryMcCune I won't consider the SP3 to be a tablet though...

@TerryChia it is a tablet... and a laptop it's kind of both
I used the missuses pro 2 as a tablet the other night to watch GoT and worked fine as a tablet

7:57 AM
@RоryMcCune The power envelope is really more laptop than tablet. It is way more powerful but won't have as long a battery life for example.

@TerryChia sure it can't match latest iPad figures for battery life but for a lot of people they never use them away from power that long anyway, so a problem for some and likely not others...

@RоryMcCune Nono, I'm not talking about usage. It's a perfectly fine device.
But it definitely can't be classified as a tablet and compared against the Nexus 7 or iPad for example. It's a totally different category.

so what you're saying is it's a tablet pro? does that settle it? :P

drones playing music

@TerryChia sure I see what you're saying, but it provides a superset of Tablet/Laptop functionality. the Modern apps do tablet stuff and the desktop does laptop stuff. Whilst I'd usually compare it against say an Air, rather than an iPad it's interesting that Engadget rate it as a tablet and that voters prefer it when compared to tablets...

8:13 AM
Mmmmh
Great

@kalina articulate as ever in the morning, I see ;op

@RоryMcCune aye - I have it

HTC blink feed has some nonsense about Jim parsons leaving tbbt

@RoryAlsop ooh is it good?

Now even troll news is getting delivered to me
Fuck HTC

8:16 AM

@RоryMcCune actually, yes. At the start it is very annoying for anyone who can play, as it is tricky to bypass the early lessons (although the kids loved them) and once it is cranked up to full speed and all the notes, it rocks!
you play it just like a real guitar
exactly like

@RoryAlsop wow, is it console only or PC as well?

@RоryMcCune don't know - would need to check
(if you need a PS3, I can help...ahem)

@RоryMcCune I'm actually feeling much better today

@RoryAlsop heh, just checked, looks like PC too :)

8:18 AM
now that the storm has passed

@kalina good :)

@kalina I had to google to see which one he was. I know, but I rarely bother with actors names if I can help it.
I though tbbt had finished, anyway

@RoryAlsop it should have, a while back..

@RoryAlsop Nope. Still ongoing.

@RoryAlsop that's not the point, I know from past experience that if I suddenly start noticing things like that (I wouldn't usually while driving) that I'm no longer fully paying attention to driving. If I allow myself to further drift into that state I completely stop paying attention to driving. That's not a position I want to be in
@RoryAlsop tbh I haven't even watched season 7, then again, I haven't really watched TV
I've still got two episodes of continuum to watch and the season finished months ago
I'll probably watch them in time for the next season to start
for some reason, sleeping in an air conditioned room has made me feel ill
which is special, since due to other things no longer being a problem, even though I feel like death I still feel better than I have done for the last few days

8:26 AM
@kalina Now I understand. Yes - that makes sense

@RoryAlsop it's not so much a "can't" as it is "if you reach this threshold, ensure your priorities are still in the correct order"
also somehow recently I have murdered my MPG
I think it's time to change my car for a diseasal
I was getting ~40 and now I'm getting ~31
I watched the new robocop movie
it's not as good as the one that is older than me
right well, bored of communicating with myself

:-)
very stream-of-consciousness there

I don't understand, please elaborate
I have coffee now, it might make more sense
fucking coffee

yawn morning.

before last year I had never drunk coffee in my life and was powered by my natural lust for life
and now I'm on several large mugs of coffee per day, and some red bull when I'm not near a coffee machine
might as welljust wear a tshirt stating I am an addict
I do have a tshirt that has that written on the front but I never wear it because it would be like wearing a tshirt saying "arrest me I'm stoned"

8:44 AM
I like the "I simply walk into Mordor" t-shirt. I might need to buy one

yesterday I saw a documentary from VICE about Heroin addicts in Swansea
it's interesting but a real mood killer

so is your face :)

@TildalWave well isn't that rude

@TildalWave nicely done for a Thursday morning :-)

@LucasKauffman I did add a smiling emoticon to it, doesn't it help?

8:48 AM
@TildalWave a little ... only
I challenge you to trial by combat

@RoryAlsop my back still hurts like ... something, I needed that :))
@LucasKauffman you win, there, settled
I need like 20 seconds just to get off the chair lol

Hahahaha - comment on the opening ceremony: 58 year old Stephen Malley said, "Personally I felt the ceremony was a brilliant representation of Scotland's rich history of caning loads of mind-altering drugs"

@TildalWave you're not that old?
@RoryAlsop opening ceremony?

@LucasKauffman got a cramp in my back obviously, I first thought it's just too much coffee but it's even worse today
shit happens

@TildalWave shite go see a doctor

8:51 AM
I will, I need something they have access to and I don't

@LucasKauffman commonwealth games in Glasgow

@RоryMcCune is that where you run off a hill after a piece of cheese?

@kalina Maybe if you weren't constantly stoned ... :P

oh it's like the olympics but smaller

@LucasKauffman the celebration of all the countries the British Empire used to rule. A chance for them to all beat us again.

8:54 AM
@LucasKauffman TWSS

@LucasKauffman and without Russia, USA, China, and as one commentator put it, a games where Wales can win the 100m

@RoryAlsop Or a chance for you to go William Wallace on their asses again

@TildalWave he's on a roll
@LucasKauffman I'm planning on avoiding it as much as is humanly possible

yeah and I can't even laugh, it hurts ...

I may catch highlights on TV if my kids are watching it, but I'm certainly not going near Glasgow

8:55 AM
@RoryAlsop it will probably be a traffic nightmare

can't see the picture, but yes - complete nightmare
have told my team not to come to the office for the next ten days

@RoryAlsop What a nice boss.

@RoryAlsop New World of Work :p?
@RoryAlsop working from home is so much relaxter. All you need to wear is the occasional shirt for a video conf

they can work from home
:-)

@RoryAlsop hows the dresscode at RBS btw?

9:00 AM
and as we all work through citrix in the office anyway, it doesn't change much
@LucasKauffman Variable. dress down on Fridays. I wear a suit, but no tie, and usually short sleeved shirt
some folks wear ties

@RoryAlsop Did you put ROOMS TO LET sign on your office doors?

@TildalWave office? You misunderstand modern workplaces
it's all bookable hot desks

one of our teams is trying to implement that at insurance company where the average age is 40 years
it's not going too well I heard

@RoryAlsop Even for important employees like HR manager?

@Gilles ... which is what the IDE is about.

9:03 AM
@TerryChia In London even the partners don't have offices anymore :p

the IDE should be like a French waiter - bring me the food, get out of the way, only be noticeable if I'm doing something horribly wrong (like putting ketchup on my fries).
6

@AviD yea you should use mayonaise

@LucasKauffman spicy mayonnaise.

@AviD or one made with truffle oil

damn that's a good idea

9:08 AM
@RoryAlsop that is all kinds of ridiculous.

@TildalWave if you want something special, fries with truffle mayonaise and sprinkle some parmesan on the fries before serving

@TerryChia even for them, yes
@LucasKauffman ewww

@LucasKauffman and chives mmmm

@RoryAlsop u coming from both worlds (I suppose) what do you consider better, flex desks or normal ones?

not fries tho, I like wedges more

9:09 AM
@TildalWave mmm

@LucasKauffman Permanent desks, so I have a base I know I can leave stuff at, with a chair which is mine, and configured just so, with a monitor setup I like etc
@TildalWave yuck
Thin chips, with salt and vinegar. That is all

Q: Application description?

:-)

@RoryAlsop classic problem which is used to demonstrate inheritance to programming students

@LucasKauffman offices with closey doors is best. Open Plan is a nightmare for people trying to focus

I had some good brunch today btw, two poached eggs on two pieces of toast with parma ham. Baked mushrooms and potatoe wedges and two slices of thick bacon

@LucasKauffman You know, I think I can count the number of times I used inheritance to solve problems with one hand.

9:13 AM
@RоryMcCune yea I always put on some monotone music

I'm starting to dislike OOP-ish code a lot now.

@LucasKauffman better for what? If you mean, "better for dehumanizing and demoralizing any staff you might have, while also making recruiting quality candidate a real bitch", then perhaps flex desks might be a contender.

@LucasKauffman yeah if headphones are culturally acceptable that helps...
@AviD I take it you've had the joy that is open plan before then

btw, they took away our phones and changed everything to lync, also for dialing normal numbers

@RоryMcCune I can focus easily - I can block out everything until someone says my name. But I obviously have a bit of OCD - I like knowing where my pens are, and the height of my monitors etc

9:15 AM
@RoryAlsop Man you really need some help in appreciating good foods. You do know that not all the world buys ready meals, and for a good reason, right?

@RоryMcCune he is talking about an even more insidious idea than open plans. Flex desks are an order of magnitude worse.

@LucasKauffman the last company I worked for was on a big lync drive

they all gave us a one of these:

@TildalWave I like to cook

the software is too bloated for its purpose imo

9:15 AM
@AviD yep

you'd think something linked to a business critical system like telephony would be super lightweight and responsive

so every consultant looks like a complete knobhead now when walking around and calling

@LucasKauffman Oh yeah, someone mentioned you guys had that. Globally

@LucasKauffman s/now// ;)

You could not give employees a clearer sign to say "You do not matter to us, you are completely fungible and expendable."

9:16 AM
@RoryAlsop I already demanded for a convertable BMW M3 series

well, unless you actually gave them an actual sign that says "You do not matter to us, you are completely fungible and expendable."

AviD whining about his new job already?

@AviD fungible - word of the day. Must see if I can get it into a conf call
maybe I'll use the line: You do not matter to us, you are completely fungible and expendable

@kalina no, quite the opposite!
I'm bragging! :-)

all I'm going to say is... I work between zero and three days per week, no more than five hours per day that I do work

9:17 AM
@RoryAlsop also add 30.000 FT perspective

@RoryAlsop on your kids, I assume. ;-)

@kalina yet you do not want to share what it is you exactly do

@kalina I do less than that that I would consider "work"

@LucasKauffman of course not, why would I share intimate details about my life with relative strangers on the internet?

@AviD hahahaha

9:18 AM
@RoryAlsop yeah I can do on-sites like that as well, but I am a bit odd, that said, much fonder of office + closey door + music :)

@kalina I do more than that on my unpaid work...

@AviD That's a guaranteed ticket to an old folk's home in the future I would think. ;)

@RоryMcCune It has been a very long time since I had a closey door + office. When I did, there was music and I was delighted

@RoryAlsop poor you

@kalina no - I do it because I want to. It is fun. It is why I volunteer to do things like this

9:20 AM
@RoryAlsop I've come down in the world (well till being home based) very first job I had in 1995 was the only time I had a proper office..

@RoryAlsop that's still a perk of having a lab :p

@kalina hence I don't get bored
@LucasKauffman the lab in MLP was great fun

HR manager Alsop, in the human resources office, listening to death metal while performing a disciplinary hearing
@RoryAlsop MLP?
MLP?

I used to have an official workshop in my first proper job - with tools and everything. Physical tools, not software
@kalina HQ of Ernst & Young in the UK

@kalina More London Place

9:21 AM
@RoryAlsop thats it, EY are all bronies now.

My Little Pony
@RoryAlsop you know what, I hate being bored, but I also hate having a full schedule

@AviD heh
@kalina I always wish mine could be fuller so I have no empty brain time

if my list of things I have to do stretches off too far into the future my brain starts to deadlock and I get stressed

when I have gaps, that's when I do puzzles, update things

my schedule rarely gets above 50%
stress is bad for creativity

9:23 AM
@kalina If mine gets below 99% I become less happy. Holidays are not my favourite thing

@RoryAlsop u can donate yours to me

@RoryAlsop well that's just it, I love sitting on some remote beach somewhere tanning
but since I changed professions, I'm finding myself in similar situations during the normal course of working

@RoryAlsop I don't mind holidays as long as you can fill them yourselves, the worst thing is being unable to do anything

and it's taken the magical sparkle out of beaches for me

@kalina I can do that for maybe 2 days. BY then I am tanned anyway, so I need to find stuff to do. The 2 weeks I had in Spain, the rest of the family did lots of swimming and sunbathing. I did a bit of moderating on SE, wrote a paper, did some mensa puzzles, wrote a song and a bit of another, drank a lot and turned brown
:-)

9:25 AM
in fact
I've lost my magical sparkle for most night life
it causes a major conflict in my brain

@LucasKauffman ahh - yes. With family, you just focus on what holidays the kids would enjoy best

one of the things I love more than anything is starting to feel like work

Anyone has ever started typing and answer and halfway through went like "Naah" closes page

@Nick yep

@Nick I normally post what I have and then delete it
but yeahh

9:27 AM
for me holidays is the time to read all the books I've piled up during the year

@Nick yep
@LucasKauffman well, I did read something like 11 or 12 over the 2 weeks as well - loving the kindle

@RoryAlsop I'm still not past the point where I don't want paper books, but getting there though considering the weight of carrying them around

@Nick all the time

@LucasKauffman At home I only read paper books - I love them, but taking that many physical books on holiday doesn't work. Which does mean I am finding myself buying the paper and kindle versions of some books.
And if I read the kindle version first, I just end up popping the brand new paper version back up onto amazon for sale

"holidays"? what is that?

9:35 AM
@Nick Trick is to find questions you might enjoy answering. Often not the easiest thing to establish though. Helps if you like the subject.

@RoryAlsop how do you sell stuf on Amazon?

I'm not a fan of books at all
paper books seems like a waste of trees
digital books don't feel like relaxing
at least with a movie I can slip into a state of being half awake and the story still continues

@kalina most books are printed on recycled paper though

recycling is not the same as "not cutting them down in the first place"
it's not a get out of jail free card

@kalina can't make time for most movies. I see two or three a year
books are better

9:44 AM
that's like saying you're not contributing to global warming because you're offsetting your carbon footprint by paying somebody else
what a load of bollocks

films don't tend to match up to my imagination

books require that I use my own imagination as part of the story telling process

@RoryAlsop I haven't seen a single film which was better than the book

a real author wouldn't need to do such a thing
I'm not saying that the stories in books translates well to movies
because I've read hitchhikers guide and lord of the rings
but reading lord of the rings was like going to work
everything was so wordy and it required a lot of effort
can't be bothered with that

yea had the same with American Psycho

9:51 AM
@kalina soo much better than the films though
the LOTR films were visually quite nice, but only in the way that any video of nice landscapes is. The monsters didn't wow me, because I expected more - the way I had them pictured in my head for many years was more impressive
reading words requires no effort
they just happen
film requires ignoring blurriness, poorly executed imagery and the difficulty of filming things which are unfilmable

@RoryAlsop I do enjoy films though, especially tarantino or stanley kubrick

@RoryAlsop The author would disagree. :P

@TerryChia fair enough :-)
there - fixed

10:14 AM
best answer I've read on meta.se:

A: Improving "demonstrate a minimal understanding" close reason

jmacAnalogy Time A good question-answer pair is like collaborative puzzle solving. The asker has a big puzzle they are trying to solve, and is stuck on some part of it. A good question will identify the specific part they are stuck on, share what pieces they are aware of, and ask for guidance to ...

+1 for toesy socks!

I know I'm posting too much Weird Al, but this is very funny

@AviD I don't understand what he's meaning with the jigsaw pieces though. The answer itself makes more sense without the jigsaw.

10:31 AM
Americans in a nutshell.

Americans ARE a nutshell.

@AviD ^ :-)

10:43 AM
Ah Americans
Just point and laugh at them

11:02 AM
/cc @RоryMcCune - thats sequel to webscale mongodb

@AviD Not very credible since he likes PHP.

@TerryChia I feel @AviD must be trolling me at this point :op

@RоryMcCune The mongodb one was much better.

@TerryChia also PHP Ah haha ha.
^ this one is good

11:23 AM
Did you just spell out sequel instead of SQL?

11:47 AM

A: Pre boot authentication for Android phones

Lucas KauffmanWhat would the use be of preboot authentication when Android doesn't support full disk encryption for all files and folders? none.

concise, but absolutely correct

12:00 PM
@TildalWave this actually doesn't answer the question
The question is "Is there a solution that does X?"
not whether it would be viable

@kalina then it's off-topic as product recommendation

so close it and delete it as off topic

actually @Lucas answered that too, there's no solution because it would do jack all for what OP wants (see comments)
@kalina you're assuming I have powers that I don't, all I can do is vote

HUSH YOU ALL.

@TildalWave I make no assumptions because I don't care enough to follow it through
this is Stack Exchange we're talking about
you're lucky I even clicked the link

12:14 PM
@kalina You do more SE-related things than I do.

Possible
My ocd takes over
Combined with muscle memory once I get started I just auto pilot through it
Don't think I don't feel dirty after doing so

@TildalWave I have my moments
NOT A LOT, but some.

12:37 PM
@kalina If you actually felt dirty, you'd be starting to learn!

12:55 PM
Very convincing domain name
and the design is very good

@FEichinger ...

hahaha someone posted a vid on FB where they were cliffdiving and suddenly you see him going under and a shark appears. One guy commented this: * I'm from Australia and confirm this is 100% real. Sharks even come out of the taps if you turn them on hard enough.*

I don't think that's all that funny
I find your failure to markdown three times in a row more funny than the comment you're trying to markdown

Well I'm happy I made you smile then

you should, I'm told I have a nice smile

1:13 PM
@kalina What kind of monster would lie to you like that?

@FEichinger @simon
where is that Canadian git at anyway

wow, just wow

1:29 PM
@kalina <3

@FEichinger somehow I think it may take more than an ascii heart for you to talk yourself out of this one...

@RоryMcCune How about a unicode heart instead?

@Terry If I were at my PC, it would've been one.

@TerryChia he could try it I guess it at least would show more effort.

@unpingableRory Hey, I'm putting my life on the line with her all the time. Nothing new there.

1:33 PM
@RоryMcCune @kalina will probably prefer his organic heart dug out from his chest.
2

inb4 her knife joke.

1:44 PM
Anyone having problems with tcpdump after about 15-20 petabytes?

1:55 PM
@FEichinger that's not a joke

@kalina It's fine. I'm already investing in stab-resistance.

how coincidental
only the other day did I take possession of a knife that can cut through kevlar... and bone...
I am of the opinion that hydrofluoric acid will do a better job of melting people if you cut them up into small pieces

Who was stupid enough to let you have a knife?
Giving you a knife makes people responsible for genocide!

and you know what
they stay razor sharp because I only ever cut vegetables and bread with them

Also ... Stop melting people, geez!

2:04 PM
@kalina Walter White may know better.

@TerryChia no

@TerryChia I bought a few T-shirts of breaking bad the other day

2:20 PM
firm and juicy
mmm

2:31 PM
@kalina ... Star whore.

2:55 PM
Hey @RоryMcCune, wanna know the new hipster JVM language?

@TerryChia is it Gosu?

@FEichinger I was eating an apple
not my problem that you're all perverts

@RоryMcCune Hahaha! A HN reader I see.

@TerryChia yeah saw the title, but hadn't read the article as yet...

@kalina You knew exactly what you were doing!

2:56 PM
nope

@RоryMcCune Who cares. It's a new language and it's on HN so it must be good right? ;)

I don't appreciate being called a star whore every time I am merely being myself

@TerryChia fair point inb4 20 start-ups have it as their main language
@kalina Would "Person of negotiable star affection" be better?

you're right, it's time I judged SE chat the same as I do IRC and just recategorise you all as internet people rather than people I like
there we go, now everything any of you say or do has absolutely no impact on me at all

@kalina wait you like people on here?
:op
