@JohnMartin As a Pre-Vatican II Catholic(1962-1965), the practice of the laity receiving BOTH elements(bread and wine) were reserved for ordinations, adult baptisms, and, depending on the circumstances, Extreme Unction(Prayer for the Sick). They were NOT a part of normal celebratory assembly(Mass), although the Council of Trent(1646-1664) reafirmed "bread and wine" as being 'both species of bread and wine'.

However, in Chapter VIII of Session 13(Document on Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist) it says,"...be able frequently to receive that supersubstantial bread, and that it may be to them truly the life of the soul". No mention of wine, except to those celebrating the liturgy. This was addressed in Vatican II Sacred Liturgy(55)," The dogmatic principles which were laid down by the Council of Trent remaining intact (40), communion under both kinds may be granted."
@JohnMartin The point being: It was 'once' a practice of the Church to celebrate both elements as communion; it fell out of practice-although it was never 'forbidden', and in the last century was re-instituted, so that only old reprobates like myself remember what it was like before.
