Q: How is this to be understood in light of Scripture?

DaиAre the following question formats inherently theological? How is this [text/passage] to be understood in light of Scripture? How is this [text/passage] to be understood in light of other Scriptures? (While there was a specific question that prompted this meta question, I have also seen sever...

@PaulVargas FYI I didn't feel that your answer was in violation of any site guidelines. You showed your work from a Christian perspective and stated that this was your perspective. That is a perfectly valid answer and likely would get upvoted by some folks
I DV'd it because of my own subjective standards for answers on this site. If an answer doesn't address the historical, linguistic, and literary context and skips to application or proof-texting, I generally will DV it
but that is not a requirement (although many answers are asking for at least one of those things), it is just my personal voting method
granted, sometimes no linguistic or literary context is needed, so in those cases addressing only historical considerations is fine and would get my upvote
but that's just me - I don't recommend catering to my votes - there are many other users with different standards who I'm sure would upvote your answer

@Daи do you know why Paul deleted it?

@JackDouglas yes, he said so in the comments on another answer
what would be a good/better way to phrase it?
I'm all ears

@Daи I would delete an answer on a site that a moderator had made it publicly known that they had DVd

@JackDouglas well ya can't do everything to please mods - my votes on questions and answers count just the same as any other user

2:10 PM
@Daи no they don't
at least not once you broadcast what you've done
keep it quiet and you can vote like a user
otherwise, no

@JackDouglas votes to close/delete don't, but upvotes and downvotes from us do

so you keep asserting, it's still not true
and you've just received some evidence

@JackDouglas well, I didn't specifically say what I had DV'd, and it was in reply to another user on a different question (I made a blanket comment to the effect that I had DV'd another answer as well

Indeed, but Paul made it clear that he knew
I guess there was only one DV at the time

@JackDouglas yup, lesson learned I suppose
unfortunately, If I DV with no explanation, users will complain about it. But if I leave an explanation, they'll also complain. I can't make everyone happy

2:13 PM
I DV a lot and don't see many complaints

in this case, I left no explanation but made the mistake of commenting to another user that I wasn't thrilled with other answers as well

just don't try and make everybody happy

@JackDouglas it is mostly new users who will complain about the DVs
@JackDouglas believe me, I don't

so there is no problem then?

@JackDouglas ?

2:14 PM
If you aren't trying to please everyone, and not everyone is pleased, then there is no problem?
2 mins ago, by Daи
unfortunately, If I DV with no explanation, users will complain about it. But if I leave an explanation, they'll also complain. I can't make everyone happy

I was addressing it with the user since he clearly inferred that his answer was not showing work. I felt that was the right thing to do. I wanted him to know that his answer was fine, my DV does not imply any violation of site guidelines
^^^ that's all

And you think that by saying that, it will be believed?
it seems to me that you are just making it even more public that you disagree with Paul's answer

@JackDouglas that's what I felt like was the right thing to do. This room seemed to be the best place to address it
only a select group of users stop by, and even fewer go back and read everything they missed

I know what you are trying to do, and I think it is the right thing to want, but I think the effect is the opposite of what you are hoping to acheive.

@JackDouglas well I'm open to input for improvement - but that doesn't appear to be your goal

2:21 PM
I'm sorry you don't think so
I guess saying "it is" won't help?

2:33 PM
@JackDouglas Can you see the answers deleted?

@PaulVargas yes I can
mods can and so can anyone with >2k on this site

@JackDouglas If you downvote on an answer and not comment, does this impact your reputation?

@PaulVargas yes, you are stung with -1 for a DV on an answer
DVs on questions are free

@JackDouglas Then, when I deleted my answer, @Daи recovered the lost reputation?

2:51 PM
@PaulVargas yes, but I don't think Dan is bothered about 1 rep either way!
he has plenty to spare :)

@JackDouglas I had a upvote, and delete it, my reputation went down.

you had one upvote and one DV, = +10 -2 = +8 nett
when you deleted the answer, you lost that +8
is that right?

@JackDouglas Right.

@Paul you aren't bothered about downvotes are you?

@JackDouglas I'd like some feedback.

2:59 PM
sure, but you must know from SO that sometimes you won't get it?
I mean, anyone can vote

@JackDouglas You're right, but isn't this a different site?

It is, but it's the same engine

@JackDouglas I deleted my answer because it did not include any extra-biblical reference.

no reason why it should, but you are free to delete if you want to
I enjoy being able to down-vote posts I don't care for without worrying about retaliation. And I really enjoy being able to leave honest comments without worrying that they'll be justifiably interpreted as evidence that I've down-voted. I would not like to see the two systems linked. — Shog9 ♦ Jun 28 '09 at 19:36
^^^ FYI
@PaulVargas check the all-time highest voted answer on the site: hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/…
I think most of my answers do not include any extra-biblical reference

@JackDouglas In some cases, the Bible itself is its own best interpreter.

3:07 PM
yes, I think it depends on the question

@JackDouglas However, my knowledge of the Scriptures is small and clumsy.

me too :)
but we still probably notice some things others don't
you don't have to be perfect to be useful here

But every day I learn something new, here, and in my reading.
@JackDouglas If I start to know more and more and I don't have a prayer life, I could find my own glory. Conceit. It is easier to study than pray, do you think? It is easier to do other things, to have a devotional life.

3:28 PM
@PaulVargas yes, I find that too
though tbh, I don't find study or prayer easy

@JackDouglas Thank you.

Hey, @JohnMartin. Where are you from? What do you do?

Paul, Sorry...Give me 10 minutes.
I’m a CPA in Tennessee
Other than that I read a lot of Genesis and work with the ages/numbers.
Hi, David.
Paul / David Do you mind doing something for me here?
What do you think about Users here giving opinions on others' Christian believes? Everyone has opinions, but some are being posted with their "facts" not correct.
As I wrote above about the "work with the ages/numbers" I was joking. ;-)

9:00 PM
@JohnMartin Do you mean to telling lies or slandering the beliefs of others or making jokes? I did not understand.

@Paul I have no idea, and to some degree that's irrelevant. I'm just saying some things that are posted aren't completely correct. E.G. "The Catholic Church did that for centuries, out of convenience and the mistaken assumption that the priest acted in behalf of the laity in drinking the cup."

@JohnMartin Just a quick comment, John - I'm about to shut down for the night. I generally refrain from this, but have once or twice challenged/corrected claims about belief that were factually untrue. "Opinion" I don't touch. :) FWIW!

@David All right. I smile as I write this, but some of the strong opinions seem to be based on things factually untrue. ;-)

9:17 PM
@JohnMartin Many have a custom set of principles or rules of hermeneutics. Or because someone said that someone else said ... Certainly, these are opinions of the users, some quite subjective and error-prone. But yes there are some very serious and careful in their opinions.
