Hey Greek-literate folks... tonight I chanced upon a pocket of the universe that holds that Ex 22:17 ("do not allow a sorceress to live" and variations thereof) isn't about sorcery at all but that מְכַשֵּׁפָה is really "poisoner". That seems pretty unlikely straight from the Hebrew, but it got me wondering if something happened on the way into Greek. Is there any room for ambiguity in the LXX version or are these people just nuts?

I have no insight on this at all, only interest in the concept, what say these folks about Saul's encounter with the medium?

@waxeagle that's part of why my reaction is "wait, what?". The people talking about this seem to be Wiccans focusing specifically on the Exodus passage, saying "that doesn't mean us". But I'm wondering where the heck they get "poisoner" as an alternative. I'm guessing there's nothing there, but since I don't know Greek I wondered if there's something about this passage in that language, or something.

@MonicaCellio like with most things you can pull a verse out and massage it to say what you want it to, but usually when you fit it back into context after that massage it gets kinda messy.
(I mean this is why we have the whole scripture)

@waxeagle yeah, agreed. Such an interpretation doesn't work in context. So they probably don't have a basis for it, but the completist in me wanted to actually connect the dots and see that they don't have a basis, but...language barrier. So this isn't important at all, but we have people who know Greek and look at the LXX all the time, so I figured it was worth asking here.

I realized that I believe the biggest need for this site is some form of hermeneutical protection. What I mean is that while some hermeneutical appr...

@Sarah - welcome back!
@MonicaCellio unpinned - deleted.
@MonicaCellio I've voted to delete this as not an answer; Frank left a comment a few days ago and the author hasn't been back to the site in five days.
