@CamilStaps Try R.C. Benton, "Aspect and the Biblical Hebrew Niphal and Hitpael", PhD, U Wisconsin-Madison, 2009? See Section 4.4.4.2, pp. 322ff: 'The tendency of “fight” verbs towards the Niphal for their active sense is puzzling.' (p. 325) Brief but useful discussion: issue is bigger than לחם alone.

@Dɑvïd Thanks. In fact I had read that dissertation a few months ago, but forgotten that he talks especially about these verbs.
