Would love to see some style of [M↓] footnotes - PHP Markdown Extra's would be fine. Gets tiresome (and tricky) when editing/developing an answer (as I'm sure you're as aware as any). Thoughts?

@Davïd This is on my list of things to do. The big problem is that there's no standard for extending Markdown and we aren't in the business of creating them. Personally, I think Markdown lies pretty close to the core of our system and we need to make it less annoying to use. Other items on my wish list: link anchors, tables, and fenced code blocks.

@JonEricson let me get this straight: what you're saying is that if someone else develops Markdown extensions that accomplish these tasks, SE would be more likely to use them? ;)
