5:58 AM
morning

@jippie morning
@Funkyguy Why is that?

5 hours later…
11:33 AM
anyone here who is an IC design engineer?

Roh
11:50 AM
Hi

Hi Roh

Roh
@IvanMatala hi
@IvanMatala Not now but there are many guys here that work on FPGA and maybe can help you. What is your problem?

@Roh I want to become one. I need like a roadmap on how to get there. Ill be graduating soon (BS Computer Engineering)

Roh
@IvanMatala I think you're wrong in asking the question. I guess you want to learn that how you can design a processor. am I right?

@Roh i dont think so.
@Roh, i need a guide on how to land a career in ic design

Roh
12:00 PM
@IvanMatala But you are a computer engineer. for designing an IC you have to have enough study in electronic field and then you have to have enough study in digital circuits.
you have to be familiar to digital gates and so on...
for start off you can use CPLDs or FPGAs!

@Roh im familiar with them
@Roh my undergraduate education covered them

Roh
@IvanMatala With all stuff that I mentioned? even electronic?

@Roh yes

Roh
@IvanMatala IMO then you are one of them!
maybe I misunderstood or you incorrectly asked your question.

Roh
12:36 PM
@Funkyguy Hey shannon, you may want to see this youtube video:

2 hours later…
2:27 PM
@IvanMatala The advice I've seen (I may be biased) is that you should get a Masters working on IC design. The more generic answer is to find companies that you want to work for, and then find jobs that you want. Use those requirements as a guide.

@Roh That is a good video, I watched it a while ago but I should watch it again honestly.

Ell
2:44 PM
Hi folks

@Ell mornin'

Ell
I'm terrible at EE and I need help! :P I'll show you my abomination so far
I was trying to join 13 stranded wire cables together
I tried soldering
this picture makes me sad :P

What are the wires made out of and what solder did you try?

Ell
the wires are copper

What solder did you use?

Ell
2:48 PM
and Just some solder I found in my shed :P But I soldered pairs together but now their too rigid to solder together :L

if you used Lead-free, I can understnd why you are having problems

Ell
I can see 30/40 on the packaging but it's very old

Well...you could strip them some more and then just twist

Ell
@Funkyguy I think it's more just my poor soldering skills
I was thinking of just cutting the end of and starting from scratch and was wondering what your advice would be?

@Ell So I'd say that trying to join wires like that is going to be hard no matter what you do

2:49 PM
You don't really need skill to solder a bunch of wires togoether.

Ell
@W5VO Yeah me too. I need a connector of some kind
maybe screw terminals

There are little twisty plastic thigns that have a metal conductor inside
you can get them at a hardware store,
You just put the wires inside and twist and it just holds on to them

@Funkyguy Wire nuts

yea

but those won't really take 13 at a time

2:51 PM
Yea, I'm not sure if you can put 13 in, I've never needed one for that many so I've never looked
What gauge are these? They look at least 18 gauge

@Ell If you're bent on soldering them, then I'd suggest getting a piece of bare wire, and wrapping them around that bare piece of wire first

Ell
18AWG it says

then it should be easier to solder each individual wire

Ell
I only soldered because it was the first think I thought of :)

@Ell whoa seriously? CALLED IT!

Ell
2:52 PM
I'm open to any suggestions
@Funkyguy Yep :D
I'm stripping the wires now
Okay I have 13 stranded wires with stripped ends
Does anyone reckon these'd do? maplin.co.uk/p/3a-terminal-blocks-3-pack-l96ar
Shame they're 12 way, and so expensive

3:29 PM
crimp-on ring connectors

Ell
3:42 PM
There are so many options on farnell

3:54 PM
@Ell go to your local hardware store - it'll probably be cheaper

Ell
@W5VO Any places vaguely near me only sell domestric electrical stuff :S
this makes me sad

1 hour later…
5:18 PM
So let me get this straight. The main difference, in terms of external circuitry to the PMIC, between asynchronous and synchronous regulators is whether the "bottom gate" is a diode or a MOSFET?

2 hours later…
6:55 PM
morning

3 hours later…
9:38 PM
@Funkyguy synchronous regulators have a MOSFET (probably in addition to a diode) to reduce conduction losses during the free-wheeling cycle

@W5VO Awesome. Everything is in order then

I haven't really heard a normal diode type called a "asynchronous" though

I havent' either, although I saw an ad for synchronous buck converters and I just thought, "What does that actually mean for a power IC?"
I didn't bother to seek out asynchronous PMICs, just google the difference
