I am sure if this was smart we would all be doing it. Why not? (amperage, fake?)

The Kelvin water dropper, invented by British scientist William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) in 1867, is a type of electrostatic generator. Kelvin referred to the device as his water-dropping condenser. The apparatus is variously called the Kelvin hydroelectric generator, the Kelvin electrostatic generator, or Lord Kelvin's thunderstorm. The device uses falling water to generate voltage differences by electrostatic induction occurring between interconnected, oppositely charged systems. Its only use has been in physics education to demonstrate the principles of electrostatics. == Description == A typical...
@MLM Interesting how the spark sometimes seems to have a 50/60 Hz buzz in your video ;o)
high voltage, low current, low power.

Do you find any relation between these?
88911 : 1111111111 10 1000111100 01011100 111111000000011
I have read the binary from an HID card and the employee number is 88911.
I am puzzled :'(

sparkfun.com/news/1629 -- Watch out for product death of things with counterfeit FT232's!!

3:43 PM
@ScottSeidman Interesting discussion in the thread. I can see the point of not buying any ftdi parts again, simply because of the risk associated with their unilateral action. But I can also understand why they did it. I think that they will loose customers over this, even if those customers agree that counterfeiting is bad. I've never had to deal with this, of which I'm glad.

More explanation from my question yesterday:

@jgarbers it looks like a multivibrator and if the supply voltage is higher, it will bring the timing capacitors to a higher charge so they take longer to toggle around teh transistor switch voltage point
take longer to *discharge to the the transistor switch point

I believe "OMG" is appropriate here:

Q: I need help with verilog code, I am in trouble?

user124627I am basically setting different control signals for the ALU to perform operations in verilog. But I have tried all possible ways of writing what I want but in vain, can you help me out. How should I set these control signals at particular 3 bit alu states; This is my code, i have all possible a...

@ThePhoton my response was "LOL"
the prehistoric screen shot

@EwokNightmares I'm from California so I may have a bit of the Valley Girl dialect.

@placeholder I would be very hesitant to use their chips in a project now... (although not terribly likely in the first place due to the projects I do)

@W5VO I would be very hesitant to pay for a mask set based on that guy's work.

6:40 PM
@ThePhoton mask set?

(I'm assuming he's actually a student...)
@EwokNightmares W5 says he wouldnt buy the guy's chips. I'm saying I doubt any such chips ever get made.

what's a mask set

@EwokNightmares A set of patterns for making a chip.

oh... darn... was trying to reply to the FTDI comment

@ThePhoton oh ya ok :)

6:42 PM
@W5VO Oh, well then, carry on.
@W5VO But if they squeeze the couterfeits out of the market (or force them to improve their compatibility), wouldn't that make it safer to use their chips?

what's the most elementary way to make ICs today?

silicon wagers
wafers*
using lithography
google it:0

i mean of diffusion and epitaxial growth and other methods for doping

@EwokNightmares Pay someone to do it
not even joking

i mean if i were going to make an IC factory in my basement

6:44 PM
the most "elementary" way would be to make impurities in the material
i guess..

what would be my chosen method

LOL

wonder if i can get a molecular beam epitaxy source on ebay
there is 1 for 2,500
well not hte source
the chamber

A: How are integrated circuits fabricated?

Olin LathropNo big deal really. First you get a pile of silicon. A bucket of ordinary beach sand contains a lifetime supply if you're going to make your own chips. There is lots of silicon on this planet, but it's mostly all so annoyingly bound up with oxygen. You have to break those bonds, discard the n...

Anybody know an all-in-one-chip PLL for 300-400 MHz?

i need 10 man years or torrent
@ThePhoton that is too sarcastic
he will be feeling silly in 20 years when i am using my 3D printer I bought off kickstarter to make my hobby ICs

6:54 PM
@EwokNightmares Lucky thing about ICs, you only need a 2-d printer.

@ThePhoton -__-
we are all 2D, I'm already trying to get used to it

@EwokNightmares it's true - all IC design is done in 2D design software (with multiple different layers)

@W5VO but you realize a 3D printer works in the same way, 2D layer by 2D layer just like a PCB or IC
well I guess not all 3D printers
the ones on kickstarter lol

@EwokNightmares fair point

@EwokNightmares sure, but you wouldn't design most objects that are 3D printed using 2D software
bleeding-edge IC design software doesn't even have 3D viewing options

7:06 PM
@W5VO yes it do
i want to view layer 1 or layer 16
so and so um deep
the stackup is there
i just can't change angle

7:23 PM
holy shit Olin is hiliarious.
"To be sure, you wave a dead fish over it during a full moon while thinking only pure thoughts. If it turns out later that your chips are no good, then one possibility is you botched this step by using the wrong species for fish or that your thoughts weren't pure enough."

@KyranF lol

Anyway leave the IC design and manufacture to the pros. otherwise, make it in discrete components.
home PCB etching and 3D printing based circuit mills are cool though

8:15 PM
@KyranF ok i will manufacture ipads instead

you are a funny guy! Mr Ewok!
what's with Majenko's name change to say " - not Google" at the end of it?
is that because he feels that people should do a bit more Googling themselves, prior to him solving all their problems? Because I agree, not enough Googling is done around here..
