1:09 AM
Pic from Easter Sunday

@AndyML interesting shot, but still needs some color grading
faces are currently washed out. I realize you are trying to keep the exposure of the box right, but the lack of contrast in the eyes makes it look a little dead
or atleast inhuman
especially given the extent of the highlights

OOC
I'll start playing with it once I get it in a computer, but that image is the camera's render

1:30 AM
ah, ok, well it looks promising then :)
reminds me of my cat Shadow
if she sees a box, she has to go in it
I found myself wishing I had brought my camera to church today, they had the place really nicely decorated, even had different chairs so they could fit more people
but then again, I wouldn't have had much time to take photos since I was on sound

@AndyML - Not bad as that. So you shoot in RAW+JPEG mode?

atleast not while people were in the room
@EsaPaulasto or has a RAW interpreter on his phone or the site he initially posted to
which reminds me, I need to figure out a pipeline to go Eye-Fi to Phone, to JPEG to Internets all without any action on my part
as prep for baby

Ah, the possibilities we have in this modern times :)

preferably based on star ratings on the camera
or I suppose I could possibly go with the CF/SD hybrid approach writing RAWs to CF and JPEGs to SD. Looks like the newer 32gb eyefi doesn't support raw files :(
only the older Prox2 that doesn't have as good of phone support
which makes me sad

1:51 AM
@EsaPaulasto I do
@AJHenderson Grabbed the JPEG from in-camera wifi to my phone. The most difficult part of the whole ordeal was figuring out how to post to chat from my phone.
I believe if I only shot RAW, the camera would convert to JPEG if sent via in-camera wifi. Not positive though.

could be, my 5D Mark iii doesn't have built in wifi though and I'm not about to get the wireless file transmitter
since that's like $600
err I'm sorry
$750

@AJHenderson I believe the one for my old 7D was the same
For the record, I did fit in that box.

2:32 AM
Ooo! Prophoto installs include galleries! Win!

yeah, so does most of them
even my $45 template includes galleries

@AJHenderson Thought you said you used nextgen

I said that I use that on my personal site
my photography site uses the ones built in to Keres
let me grab the links again, I have a series of demos on my site, but they aren't linked in to the navigation
there are a few other options as well, but I don't have test pages setup for them
they don't have a download all option though, which is why I mentioned nextgen
nextgen is more customizable

@AJHenderson Ah, touche
MariaDB, PHP, and WP installed...
And I know nothing about all 3, lol
I'm sure I can figure it out from WP

9 hours later…
11:54 AM
wasnt there a question once about "ghost" lines?
they happened to me
its the 85mm F1.8
no lens hood. is that why?

1 hour later…
1:24 PM
@AJHenderson is that a working site? cause if you weren't aware you have a ton of social buttons showing up and some haven't been configured to go to you (they just go to the main page of that particular network)

@Ryan which one of the sites? AJHenderson.com I occasionally do experiments with
@MichaelNielsen that looks like someone used a flash as your camera was scanning the scene
was the shutter by any chance faster than the sync speed?

ah, those ones, yeah, they are part of the template, I thought I had nuked them, but apparently not
thanks for mentioning it

sure thing

ok, they should be nuked now
apparently the default value placeholded them open and I had to clear it out to make it work
and reasons like that are why I haven't started my advertising campaigns yet

1:43 PM
how'd you like RPI? I thought about applying for a Master's there back when I was at my last job but couldn't really justify the costs

While I was there I wasn't a big fan. When I got out I realized quickly how amazing it had actually been

The only schools I wouldn't mind going to are RPI, UMinn, or there's a joint Master's program between Miami Ad School and FIU. If I was still living in Miami I'd try to do that
I just can't justify costs for really any graduate program right now since none are in my city. Out of state, relocation, leaving a career. It just doesn't make sense
oh and Illinois Institute of Tech had some promising sounding programs / certificates too

But yeah I looked for my first job, got it a few hours after the first place I interviewed. I'm on my third job and have not had to look for either of them and I make around 20 thousand a year more than a friend who is similarly bright but went to a lower school
So it was worth it
@Ryan yeah, RPI used to have a good distance education program, but Shirely Ann killed it
one of the many reasons I don't like her
(I worked with the distance education program as my workstudy)

I'm finding the issue with distance programs and even part time programs is no funding. So either I stay working but pay full cost or I leave a very good career
Even Rollins College MBA in Marketing which would be good for networking and could be done in the evenings (Orlando, FL) doesn't make a lot of financial sense when the avg salary coming out is what I'm already making

@Ryan well a lot of our distance programs were actually targeted at corporate sponsors
where we'd provide graduate training for multiple employees at a site
but I feel your pain, as much as I don't particularly want more schooling, I've considered an MBA and it always comes down to being either not good enough of a program or too much cost due to lost time
sadly RPI doesn't have a part time option for their MBAs
so even though I live 5 minutes from campus, I can't part time it
(which is kind of funny since I actually lived further from campus when I was actually going to RPI)

1:59 PM
ouch thats odd. most MBAs have some professional/executive type of thing

Lally does it as a really aggressive program that requires full time apparently
but it's still a year and a quarter not working
which basically doubles the cost
actually, a little more than doubles
though I forget exactly what the program costs

Seems like unless you're in a really big Fortune 500 type of company that will foot the bill to send you for the MBA a lot of them just aren't worth it

again there used to be more offered via distance and continuing education, but Shirley Ann butchered it

Miami Ad School has a joint program with FIU for I think a Master's in Global Communication which would be great since I'm pretty sure I could get funding and such for it through FIU's side but I'd still have to leave my job and relocate to more expensive Miami.

@Ryan ah, so you are on the marketing side?

2:05 PM
yep its what i do best

I didn't really understand what was so great about the arts program at RPI. I know their electronic arts masters was supposed to be the 4th best in the country, but the EMAC program didn't really teach me that much. I suppose that may have just been because I'd already learned so much before hand though

and I'm quickly learning that I could make a lot more (or at least additional side money) if I knew more of the financial side of marketing to then start my own consulting company

and I do know people who went on to successful marketing jobs with their EMAC degrees
for me EMAC was just another set of words on the piece of paper that said Computer Science so that I could additionally prove I knew the A/V / communications side of things
but it was a convenient program that I already was experienced in before I started college (I was already doing professional work in HS) that fit easily with the rest of my classes.
and yeah, knowing business is important, especially in the creative fields
I was fortunate to have a CFO for a father, an investment manager for a cousin, and a business owner for a grandmother
I've been inundated with business stuff since I was pretty young

ya i've been doing freelance advertising work since i was in high school. when I was in college for architecture i had more then one professor tell me i should've gone to school for graphic design. one even encouraged me to apply to transfer to Cooper Union but I can't draw worth a thing

@Ryan hehe, I can relate to that
my drawing skills suck

2:10 PM
i once got lost looking for somewhere and wound up asking for directions in an ad agency during my senior year and kinda knew immediately that it was probably where my career would take me

it actually took a while for me to get my sister to acknowledge that what I do is actually art.

senior year of college that is

my sister is a high school art teacher and does the fine arts side of things
though her specialization is pottery and ceramics
what finally convinced her is when we had a 5 hour discussion on color theory
color is near and dear to both of us

see i have to go the other direction. well don't have to but generally do. i convince people that what i do isn't art. i don't even like the term Graphic Designer and probably got my current job because my boss asked in the interview what I see myself as the most and I explained a Communicator

I could never run my own graphics design shop though. I've determined I'm good at recognizing what looks good and how to make something look better, but I'm not good at coming up with the initial idea myself

2:14 PM
Design, Video, Websites, Brochures its all just tools to communicate. Thats what I'm excellent at

@Ryan that's fair, but the two aren't mutually exclusive
I'd even say they are the same
good art should communicate
and clearly

its too subjective in fine art a lot of time. open to interpretation

@Ryan yeah, that's why I'm not big on fine art :)
I very much prefer that art make a clear statement through whatever media it uses
sometimes that can be to communicate a question
but I prefer when it is clear

i like fine art, i just don't read into it. its either something that appeals to my sensibilities or it doesn't. I've lost a few friends that went on for MFA's and met up from time to time but they're just reading so much into pieces. Meanwhile I make more then they do and they don't consider me an artist or designer because what I do isn't "inspiring"

it's easy to make something ambiguous and claim it has meaning
it's hard to make an image or design or sound speak for itself as clearly or more clearly than words
@Ryan hehe, sounds a lot like my debate with my sister that went on for years

2:19 PM
I've told people in interviews that "They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Unfortunately its open to interpretation what 1,000 words those are."

yeah, don't get me wrong, there are fine art pieces I like, but a lot of "fine art" I get the feeling the artist was just bullshitting as he or she went
rather than actually having a plan
or even a direction neccessarily
there are those who do it well, but atleast as many don't as do
even among those who get famous

even in architecture and graphic design a lot of it is bullshit

Q: Logo / process critique

grphc_dsgn I included my design thinking in the picture above; I would greatly appreciate any comments or questions about my process and final result. The objective is to create an identity for a forward-thinking consultant and speaker. He wanted a Geometric, shape based logo.

yeah, but when you are concerned about sending a clear message, it either works for people or it doesn't and success at that is "more" measurable

Is that a nice logo? Sure maybe? Is that process 100% arbitrary. Yes. yes it is.

yeah, but if you are trying to make a logo that shows establishment and formal grace and 90% of people say that's the impression they got, then your logo worked as advertised

2:24 PM
ya but in art school and architecture school they emphasize process. there is no process for that

if your art is a red square on the wall with no intent, what exactly is your measure of success?

he randomly made a few lines across the page and pretended thats process
its like Frank Gehry's architecture... the guy literally crumples a sheet of paper into a ball until he gets something he likes

1/1579.8sec

@Ryan the most educational experience I think I may have had in the art program at RPI was when my TA stacked some chairs on each other and started to "sing a sketch of the chairs"
at which point I knew she was totally bat shit crazy

however, there's 3 images in a row from that headbang (3fps) and the ghost lines are in all of them

2:26 PM
this was the same TA who tried to give me a B in my intro to video class because "we can always do better". Thankfully the Professor was more sane and changed it to a 100% since I was helping him with keeping HIS information up to date
back in a bit

2:47 PM
@MichaelNielsen Filter?

@MichaelNielsen Looks something cast on your lens, but I've only seen that happen with a UV filter and/or no hood.

if you toggle between these two you see the lines move across
so it has to be stray light thats occluded partially
and the thing that occludes it moves
in the previous one one I had no hood.was 85mm F1.8.
the last two are sigma 17-50 2.8mm. with hood
but was at the long end. and the hood is made for the short end
it is 1/800sec

@MichaelNielsen Either way, you can't say you had much control over the scene, so unexpected results aren't unexpected :)

aha
the next one that doesnt have lines is 1/200sec
and the lighting is LED
proabably flashes a lot
I think it is the fast shutter with blinking LED lighting
this is 1/200s
except here is another 1/800s
but maybe I got lucky with alignment?

3:08 PM
@MichaelNielsen You've got a 50% chance of that being the case, lol

3:19 PM
@MichaelNielsen - This ^^ is just for you! Didn't you just lately say that you Love supersweet sunset photos ;)
But I have to let you down, that one is a sunrise, not sunset :(

hehe, well, anyway that is just like I saw it. I put +10 saturation on it in post, but I didn't notice any difference. Photo-opportunity vanished almost as quickly as I saw it; two minutes later it was almost gone.

Wish me luck. Headed out for my biannual flight review.

3:43 PM
@Ryan - thanks for the correction on the name of the tool. I don't have Photoshop in front of me during the day to check exact names

@AJHenderson no problem. I've never really looked too much at the photo board but anything beyond color correction / lightroom involving image manipulation could easily be transferred to graphicdesign.stackexchange especially if it doesn't get an answer here

@AndyML Good luck m8

5 hours later…
8:33 PM
this day is dragging

8:49 PM
all the 10 minutes that's left of it...

well there was more than 10 minutes when I said that

Ain't time flying!! :D

@EsaPaulasto lol

9:15 PM
@EsaPaulasto Time was definitely flying earlier:

9:26 PM
Cool, and you passed your review test, I hope?

@EsaPaulasto That I did. The 20 knot crosswind made it interesting, though.

9:54 PM
@AndyML glad you didn't have this happen
I'm actually friends with the pilot from that situation
there used to be video of it online, but I can't find it anymore

 The Hangar

General discussion about aviation.stackexchange.com The white ...

@AJHenderson Yikes. Not a fun thing to have happen.

Anonymous
might be of use for US-based photogs :)

@PatoSáinz I've spent a bit of time there. Was stoked to see the aviation finally get into beta after about 3 tries
@AJHenderson pulled for investigation maybe
Nvm, quite some time ago

as I recall the investigation is long over and cleared
Jason pretty much had hero status from that
he took the hard way to pilot too because he was too tall for military
so he had to pay his entire way by himself
he's a pilot for a regional carrier in the south east last I talked to him
I'm in more regular contact now with his younger siblings

Anonymous
9:59 PM
@AndyML i'm a regular there

Anonymous
got invited when they were so small they desperately needed users

since Josh and Jeremy are both still up in the North East

@AJHenderson pricey

@AndyML yeah

2 hours later…
11:54 PM
well I pimped the site out while working on my prequalification for a home loan
found out in the course of income discussion that the agent I was talking to does photo booth stuff and his fiance does event photography
so I told them about the site
