12:00 AM
at this rate our DSLRs will be fackin compact camera handycam hybrids :D

like on the 60D...the only canon camera that has that?

yeah
now it is on the 60

yeah...articulating lol

they will start sticking it on the lower models too
anyway :)

lol

12:01 AM
i love my 1dmkiv - the only thing I would change is having the stupid video thing built in
my 1ds mkii preceeds all that silliness
I just wish that had a bigger buffer
but hey
it's still great

its still probably better than my 450D in every way

the screen is better on yours

ah...its sole redeeming asset

i only usually look at the histogram on it though
the 450d is capable of some great shots

at low ISO

12:03 AM
i took this on a 400d
yes
low iso

what is that?
parking garage?

hah
the inside of a multi storey parking lot exit spiral

ha!
damn I'm good
the chain link fence gave it away

heh
it doesn't exist any more or i would go back with the full frame

whats the light at the top?
parking lights?
its pretty red

12:07 AM
glow from street lamps

ah, yeah

they protrude at the top

those things tend to emit light in a single band

this was 400D too:
holy crap it is 1am
bed time for me!
i need to be up in like, 4 hours
nn all!

@JamWheel ciao

12:10 AM
nite

12:39 AM
@JamWheel WTF, man, why haven't you bothered entering that into the photo contest yet? Have you seen some of the crap that's up there? Something cool like that would likely take the contest hand's down. :-)

@JayLancePhotography lol
@JayLancePhotography like you don't have a back portfolio of stuff you could be entering too

sigh You're probably right... I've just been too lazy to go diggin' through the ol' port, in all honesty. :-)

@JayLancePhotography :P

I may be strange, but I actually hate looking through my old work... Everything except what I'm working on right now just seems like crap most of the time...

@JayLancePhotography lol

12:46 AM
Either that or it's "work related" which I can't really post up here...

sure

Alright, alright... I'll dig something up for this week. It's become a harsher crowd since the last time I posted something... I'm a little scared that @jrista is gonna try and rip me a new one. ;-)

@JayLancePhotography lol

So I managed to stick a chisel into my thumb today. :-( 6 stitches later I'm having to re-learn how to use my camera for a wedding this weekend. >.<

did you see the stuff in here earlier?
the links to the fish and stuff?'

12:49 AM
Yeah. Seemed like an 'exciting' afternoon. :-P

@JayLancePhotography ouch (literally)

@JayLancePhotography yup
thrilling

Dude seemed a bit too excited...
...and in love with his work.
His mediocre, mediocre work.

@JayLancePhotography don't be so generous
i was trying hard to be honest and not too mean

12:52 AM
Lol. Maybe it ddn't quite come across 'cause I was reading it after the fact, but it really read like the little brother trying to hold his own in a conversation with 'the big kids.'
"Hey guys, look at me!"
"Look at me!!"
"Me. ME. MEEEE!!!!!"

oh, i was very much like that

Lol. It was kinda funny reading it back in the transcript...

i bet it was

But probably less funny at the time. :-)

more annoying

12:53 AM
"ME! MEMEMEMEME!!!!!!"
"!!!!!"

esp trying to talk to somebody else whose new but become active in the site
ok....now we have a picture of hair

Right. And having a relatively 'legit' conversation... When along comes Mr. "Let me throw 19 links up."
Hair = -1 from me.

btw, totally agree, looks like a cgi rendered hallway more than a photo

Do you think it's HDR?

@JayLancePhotography ya, i was trying to calm him down and asked him to post his one best picture

12:56 AM
I wasn't sure enough to come right out and say it... But it seems like one.

but alas that was too much
@JayLancePhotography pretty sure it is

@rfusca Way to crush a guys spirit, there. ;-)

@JayLancePhotography ya, he was like 'and there goes my hobby'
and i'm thinking...great
wonder if @jrista 's seen the hair

Q: What really is the manufacturer of choice for professional photographers?

David GunzenhauserI have read many opinions on why they like one camera over the other. People say things like... - it is a personal thing, once you go with one, you are bias - photographers use only one brand because of the lens costs - some like Canon for this reason, some like Nikon for that - and the list of r...

sigh

Voted to close. I'm assuming you're the other current close vote as well.

ya

It's surprisingly hard to type when missing a thumb... :-)

@JayLancePhotography lol i guess

1:38 AM
@rfusca I would have enjoyed being overtly mean to that guy...I mean...WOW
I don't like incompetence...but when its blatant incompetence backed up by a pitiful ego...I can't just stand aside and watch

@jrista lol

@jrista You specifically gotta be careful, though... "Lack of sleep may be a contributing factor to extreme lack of patience."
Not that I haven't been there. Not judging or anything...
:-)

no sleep or plenty of sleep, the way my personality reacts to a person like that won't change
I've never liked incompetent fools who think they are the shit
I have an automatic and intense reaction that usually results in relentless pummeling and challenging of such individuals intelligence

OK, but remember that as a moderator, how you react will to some extent inform how others react. You might have a hard time with the "be nice to new people, even if they're being idiots" line if... well... You're not being nice to new people even when they're being idiots.
Just sayin'...

sure, but that guy was way beyond the line where "idiot" begins
I read his entire transcript
That guy is in serious need of some raw honesty

1:44 AM
i tried to be honest withouth being mean

of course, it doesn't help that I've been dealing with other incompetent fools all day

lol

so I'm on an anti-incompetence binge right now

Maybe. Or maybe because English was his second language some of the 'take a hint, dude' things that were coming across clearly to us were not coming across as clearly to him...

perhaps

1:46 AM
eh, I'm not sure that he didn't speak english as a first language
I've talked with plenty of people who don't speak english as a first language (we have a whole sri lanka team at work)
and there are specific patterns people use when they have a non-english native language
A-Cube's patterns were rather unique

I'm not saying he wasn't annoying... even reading later in the transcript was annoying... But @rfusca's "taking the high road" instead of "tearing him a new one" is probably a better example in general...

he sounded like one of your average lifetime IRC nitwits who learn to speak and spell via the internet....

It's important to remember that others may not draw the line in exactly the same way you do, so if others see you (with a bit of a "leadership" role) taking people to task harshly then they may see that as OK and do it too... And before you know it we're right back where we were a month ago with every person jumping into threads and berating new folks who ask "dumb" questions.
Or maybe not. I'm not trying to argue. Just thinking out loud...

heh, you do realize I'm pushing buttons a little bit here, right?

And certainly there's no shortage of hypocracy in me even bringing it up... Not like I haven't unloaded on people a time or three around here.

1:51 AM
Of course I would take the high road first.

So anyway, I've said my piece and am done now. Thanks for listening. :-)

However, there is a limit to my patience, and as the guy was being quite disruptive of normal chat discussions, I would have shut him down earlier than @rfusca simply out of courtesy for the other people in the room.

Agree or disagree as you see fit.

No matter how cordial you intend to be with someone, there has to be a limit somewhere...unlimited tolerance doesn't do anyone any good in the long run.
anyway, enough about a-square photography
or as the title of his own blog clearly stated: Sporadic Logic. ;P
Anyone know of some great manual lenses that would work with canon bodies?
guess not...

@jrista i'm not exactly a canon guy :P

2:00 AM
It's been years since I've owned or used a manual lens, honestly...

hmm, bummer

It's actually been years since I've even bought a lens, really. :-O

what I really want is something with a long focus throw
AF lenses are great...if you need AF.

I tend to tune out most of the lens discussions because my bag is full. :-)

but when it comes time to focus a landscape shot...the super short focus throw of an AF lens just makes manual focus a pain
@JayLancePhotography yeah, I can understand that
I don't really need any lenses myself
maybe the 24-105
that would complete my focal range from 16-400

2:02 AM
Are you looking for something that's a true PL, or more something that is primarily a photographic lens that just happens to have a long throw?

PL?

PL = Positive Lock. Generic would be 'cinema lens' with the long throw for pulling focus...

oh
now that you mention cinema, that was another thing that got me thinking about manual focus
which actually made me wonder if the big manufaturers like Canon and Nikon and whoever else are adding video to their DSLR's

Generally when someone talks about a long throw that's the first thing I think about...

would ever start releasing lenses that added more "cine" capabilities
like longer throw

2:05 AM
I wonder how 'niche' that market would be.

those markings that @Jay was talking about last time cinema came up in discussion
@JayLancePhotography guess it would depend on the manufacturer
Almost every time I see someone buying the 5D II at one of the local camera shops
well, maybe not almost every time
at least half the time
its for the video capabilities

I could see a 'Canon' thinking that the market wasn't big enough to develop a whole new series of lenses around...

(a LOT of people use the 5D II for Astro as well)

I use mine for both.

@JayLancePhotography I'm not really thinking a series of lenses. Just, as lenses get updated, would they ever get more cine-friendly features.
I keep thinking the 28-300 would be a great video lens
it has a very long zoom range, top notch glass, its a tad soft, but that wouldn't matter for video since its a much lower resolution than photos, etc.

2:07 AM
Gotcha. FWIW, I've never had much problem using the standard Canon lineup for cinema purposes...

hmm

But I do use a HGR follow-focus, so that probably makes a difference.

I know that actual canon video lenses have much larger zoom ranges
I think I saw one that went from 16mm-480mm or something like that

Yes, my XL2 has a much longer throw.

maybe 18mm

2:08 AM
But then it's a 1/3 sensor

XL2?

So you lose all the pretty DoF options.

yeah....1/3 sensor?
as in, p&s size sensor?

Yeah.
The XL2 is one of their 'prosumer' video cameras...
Ended up having to put a lens adapter on the front of it to get any sort of DoF.
The 5DmkII basically relegated all of that to collecting dust. :-)

wow
yeah, I know @JamWheel doesn't like the video options on DSLR's
but I think that market has huge potential
and all the little problems these first gen hybrids have will be worked out soon enough

2:12 AM
I've made half a dozen short films over the last two years with my 5DmkIIs and it's where filmmaking is at, honestly.

any of those films online?
heh...films...I just love how ubiquitous and permanent that term is ;)

As a matter of fact... Let me dig up a couple of URLs...
Here's a couple I did for a Canon-sponsored contest last year. Both were top 10 finishers in their rounds...
I've got several time lapses in that account as well, if you're interested in that sort of thing...

Eric Anderson is the name of my recently ex-boss
huge guy with HUGE beard

Lol. "My" Eric Anderson is a tall, somewhat scrawny dude. :-)

lol
good grief

2:23 AM
surprised you're not closing this one @jrista

I think I get more "buy bras" spam mail these days than "grow your thingy bigger" emails

when the hell did the internet get the idea that I was a woman??
@rfusca oh, I didn't see it
I haven't visited today...just...wasn't in the mood I guess

@jrista @rfusca has been spreading rumors for weeks...
;-)

@JayLancePhotography well...
i've been signing @jrista up at women's gyms...that may have somethign to do with it

2:28 AM
lol
of course, the de-facto supreme spam email of all time is "dear sir, we have fifteen billion dollars in an account from your unnamed nigerian uncle JUST WAITING for you to send us all your bank account information so we can deposit it for you!! So please, send us all your personal bank account information, and don't worry, we won't steel ANY of your funds...trust us!"

3:27 AM
Hello. :)
Would anyone like to critique my poor attempts at slowly becoming a better photographer?

@BillyONeal i'll do what i can

Haha

but others may leave some critique in non-real time
(i'm still a pretty new photog)

Wanted to make this a bit closer to the birdie, but the lens is maxed out here, and when I tried to move closer he jumped away
Oops.. wrong one

well there's a few problems here...its rather soft for one

3:31 AM
That one's blurry

right
lol

:sigh: -> Failed to upload image, please try again!
Well the other one is similar to that one except it's not nearly as soft

@BillyONeal well
apart from it being soft, the background is rather busy
the big bright patch at the bottom, draws the eye, but its not the subject

Hmm.. let me see if I can get the damn thing to upload...
Okay, plan B

bird photography is alot about patience....you'll not get much trying to sneak up, but setting up a 'blind' and just camping by a feeder or a tree for a bit will yield better results

3:36 AM
Like the lack of patience I have with this friggin uploader right now?

lol
don't upload a full res version
knock it down

Plan B was to send it to my webserver, but I don't have SCP installed on this box

ya
i usually set LR to limit to 1MB on export for here

Currently trying Plan C, which seems to be working flickr.com/photos/billyoneal/5879836742/sizes/o/in/photostream
Anyway, both the comment about the light patch and the busy background make perfect sense

@BillyONeal Bird photography is all about patience. It is possible to get real close to a bird, but you have to work your way there.

3:40 AM
well your other problem with the second one here is that your subject is looking out of the frame, instead of into it

For one, never go directly for them. Weave your way around in a random and fairly wide path, slowly inching towards them.
Make some (but not a lot) of noise, and actuate your camera shutter a few times so the bird gets used to the sound.

Hmm.. perhaps this should result in a question...

When you get ready to take the shot, frame something else nearby first, then pan to the bird...they don't like being looked strait at...but don't seem to really mind a camera most of the time.

@BillyONeal we have alot of bird info out there, but i'm not sure there's a straightup birding question

@BillyONeal perhapse... ;)

Q: What technique should be used when attempting bird photography?

Billy ONealHaving my photo critiqued in Chat led to some good general purpose information.... Anyway, what tips are there technique-wise for getting bird shots?

There seem to be a ton of bird questions about lenses, but I don't see anything on approaching the little buggers. :)

@BillyONeal ya

*Bill waves @jrista to answer there so that Bill gets to push the +1 button
Anyway.. sorry for interrupting. So we have the busy/bright spot background, subject looking out of the frame. Any other obvious ****ups?

Well, before I answer...I must insist on a proper question. Could you formulate a full question, and preferably, embed the image directly in the question? Asking people to come here to see the picture and our chat just imposes more hassle on other viewers.

Hmm.... let's see if it'll let me this time

something along the lines of:

3:50 AM
I purposely tried to generalize things, rather than leave it to this specific shot

"I've been trying my hand at bird photography, with some ok results. An example shot with X and Y gear can be seen below. I'm curious what tips, techniques, and/or gear might help me improve my work, and produce some better shots of birds?"

(I'm used to the more programmer-ish SEs where the more general you can make a question the better it is_

General is ok, but complete is also a necessity.
We want our content to be useful to other viewers who have the same question
And unlike StackExchange or Server Fault
which for one have HUGE membership and questions get entirely lost within a few days

Fair enough. Let me see if I can get the damn thing to upload this time. Don't want to leave the one on Flickr as the reference

but are also more personal in that while there are general programming questions, a LOT of programming questions are extremely specific to a particular problem a specific programmer is having with language X and framework Y on platform Z while interacting with other platform A over protocol B, but only in circumstance YADDA BADDA BING.

3:53 AM
@jrista: Those questions are generally discouraged though -- there's even a specific close reason for it (Too Localized)

hmm

Photo.SE must be different then

I ask those kinds of questions all the time

Haha

for example, having a problem with WCF and WS-Security interacting with Java and Metro over HTTP with x.509 certificates, and problem XYZ
there certainly isn't anything wrong with such a question on SO as far as I know
Photo.SE is different, in that while there are the personal equipment recommendation questions (which most people hate), most other technique questions can be helpful to thousands of viewers

3:55 AM
I wouldn't call that a specific question though. You've made it as general as you can given the constraints of the environment you're working in. Problem with photography is that everything can be generalized to "How do I take better pictures?"
So maybe the target of utmost generality is not what is being looked for

well...did you see my sample for your question above?

Yeah.. I've been fighting with lightroom to get the sucker to upload
@jrista: Edited.

ok, answered
the new crop is a lot better
which lens are you using?

this kit lens that goes a lil' past 100mm

4:10 AM
It's not a crop -- just a different photo. That's the same one in the Flickr link above

well, crop, different photo

It's the 18-105mm ED VR AF-S kit lens that comes with the D7000

I guess you'll come to learn those generally mean the same thing ;P

Post processed in Lightroom to remove the barrel distortion present in this lens (Otherwise untouched in post)

hmm
can you post an example without the barrel distortion corrected?
I saw that question (I didn't realize it was yours)

4:11 AM
Sure, one sec

but I would be willing to bet the distortion is not visible on such a photo

Oh, it is. :(

the only time distortion is a problem is when you have strait lines
windows on a building, brick walls, etc.

Crap... I think I already nuked the original :(

I have Canon L-series lenses, which ....
er, in lightroom???

4:12 AM
...ya, thats odd

lightroom is a non-destructive tool...you should have all your untouched masters

No, I mean I nuked the master

...how?

By deleting the original RAW file from the disk

4:13 AM
damn, why?

Erm... thought it was a garbage shot and I saw no reason to keep it

ah, ic

hmm
I think I still have my VERY first shots that I ever took with a camera
I've never deleted a single RAW file.
great way to judge your progress

So you're saying I should do that? :)

compare new photos with original ones

4:14 AM
If I end up doing that I'll need to get some more storage lol

ya, i delete a good bit of junk

These 40MB raws take up a lot of space on this laptop

storage is cheep ;) And RAW files compress nicely.

I delete stuff on a regular basis, but never right after I take a picture... I always revisit stuff after a few months to allow myself a little perspective...
We have a question about just this sort of thing around here somewhere, actually. :-)

yup

4:16 AM
i delete the absolutely junk - out of focus, exposure way off, shots of my finger, etc

15
A: What's a good strategy for choosing what to keep

Jay Lance PhotographyI don't know if this is a great system, but here's what I do: After the shoot/session is done I immediately sort through every frame I took looking for the 'keepers.' I do it this way because for me it is easier to choose to keep the great shots than it is to delete the borderline shots... That...

oh, yeah

then i go through and all but one of something that was the same from a burst mode shot

I delete rejects

pertty much everything after that I keep, at least for awhile

4:17 AM
*Bill is a chronic deleter
Part of that is that the only storage I have right now is the small SSD on this laptop

you should check out Hitachi 2Gb drives

Bill is gonna get burned at some point. :-)

those puppies are FAST (140mb/s sustained), cheap, and huge

lol

When I go back home (from my internship) I'll have a lot more storage because I'll have my workstation back

Geez

btw, these are not mine...just examples of envious skill

Really like the Feed Me one

@jrista cant see it

4:25 AM
?

deviant members only

Me either

oh, its deviantart
yeah, they are getting a bit weird these days
their image servers are also overloaded
they have something like 15 million users
you might try reloading the page a few times
to see if the images show up

@jrista it specifically says member sonly

all of em?
or just one of em?

the last two 'sooper'

The sooper-deviant ones

oh, yeah
it seems he has restricted viewing rights...
hmm

he's just resting....right?

nope

@jrista i know

oh

Gotta go for now. Thanks guys. :)
