12:47 AM
hey @andyml

1:20 AM
@rfusca howdy

1:32 AM
@andyml hows it going?

@rfusca D4? D4s? D3? etc.

@rfusca Can't complain. Getting ready for Easter. Yourself?

2:27 AM
well, my baby now has a name and a domain
and yes, the later was a condition of choosing the former

@AJHenderson lol, nice

and now I'm getting another IP address because I just realized there is the potential for data leakage if I don't host it on another IP address until his birth
because once google scans it, it will show up as being on my server
and I can't use an SSL cert without another IP or without putting the domain name in my main cert, which would be visible if anyone looked closely at my cert on my main sites

@AJHenderson all over my head

hehe, luckily IPs are only 99 cents a month
and I can drop it once baby gets here

2:46 AM
So for pro wordpress themes, it have to pay for a wp.com subscription? Or can I choose my own host and install wordpress for free?
I'm new to the whole wordpress concept...

Anonymous
3:00 AM
hello everybody

@AndyML if you pay for a wordpress.com one, then you don't need a host
but can only use what they provide
if you provide your own host, you don't pay anything for wordpress, just the theme
you install wordpress.org
or rather the wordpress software from wordpress.org
which is really really simple to do

@MichaelClark we're were talking about in the starter/consumer division

Anonymous
The @AJHenderson philosophy: "SELF HOST ALL THE THINGS!"

and sad face, apparently my SSL peeps are doing maintenance, so I can't spin up an SSL cert for my newly minted IP address

@AJHenderson Ah, that makes much more sense. Now I'm trying to decide between a host and install wordpress, or something simple like squarespace.

Anonymous
3:06 AM
@AndyML self host

Anonymous
@AJHenderson patosainz.cl

Anonymous
it's half done, It's missing some bugfixes

Anonymous
but that's basically less or more what I'm doing

@AndyML ditto, I"m editing a bunch of video for easter. I'll be up late doing that

nice
I very narrowly avoided deciding to buy my photography and photos domains
but decided as long as I've got the .com I don't care if someone else gets the .photography
because average people are still going to naturally think of everything as .com

Anonymous
3:11 AM
@AJHenderson oh you think it's nice?

@PatoSáinz yeah, I think I actually considered that template before I went with Keres

Anonymous
thanks

Anonymous
@AJHenderson Keres?

Anonymous
link?

ajhendersonphotography.com is running keres

Anonymous
3:12 AM
I thought it was rawfolio

Anonymous
@AJHenderson I really needed a theme similar to yours... damn I may use the same theme if you don't mind (and is free)

I don't mind, but it isn't a free one, it was $45

Anonymous
crosses fingers be free be free

Anonymous
FUCK

3:13 AM
one time fee though
unlike rawfolio and the like
or actually
I take that back
rawfolio I think my be one time as well, but it's a lot more

@AJHenderson $100+

yeah
the big problem with things like rawfolio and prophoto is that they lock down your ability to make adjustments
which is a big problem if you plan to go beyond their plugin support
themeforest stuff you actually get the standard template and can modify as neccessary
and it is a lot cheaper, though it also is just a theme, not an entire site system like rawfolio or prophoto

Anonymous
@AJHenderson well you can always edit the css and html can't you?

@PatoSáinz not with prophoto. Pretty sure you can't with rawfolio either
they are obfuscated zend packages

Anonymous
@AJHenderson LOL

Anonymous
3:17 AM
then i'm not touching them

yeah, that's why I stayed away too

@AJHenderson Yeah, I might go with squarespace. Pro look + hosting. Looks like most hosts with simple WP installation is the same price as squarespace, plus you have to then buy a theme.

they are very nice for photographers with no technical background
but if you know what you are doing, a theme only shop is the way to go
which is why I ended up on Keres
because Lensa wasn't quite good enough
and rawfolio and prophoto were too limiting

@AndyML just one thing:

Anonymous
Apr 15 at 3:19, by Pato Sáinz
I like to manage my servers myself

Anonymous
3:19 AM
you are loosing your freedomss

Anonymous
@AJHenderson indeed it isn't

@PatoSáinz That's you. Completely understand. I just don't have the time to fiddle with a website.

@PatoSáinz of all the free ones though, it was one of the best I found

Free time goes to my hobbies: photography, flying, and games. Haven't gotten to the last one in a long time, either.

and actually influenced my decission towards Keres

Anonymous
3:20 AM
@AndyML it took me 6 hours to get everything working from scratch (buying a server, domain, setting up dns ... setting up logs, nginx ... installing theme

Anonymous
@AndyML oh

Websites used to be on the list, but my knowledge got outdated fast

@AndyML WP really isn't that hard. It's all GUI based
even plugin installation is automatic
you choose to add new plugin, it sends you to a directory on wordpress.org
you hit "Install" and it downloads and installs it for you

@AJHenderson I believe you. The ability to customize isn't a perk for me, though. My variables are quality end result and total cost.

@AndyML yeah, then if you went WP you'd want rawfolio or prophoto
that's what those are designed for
and they do a very good job at that

3:23 AM
@AJHenderson I was leaning toward wordpress for those one-time setups, but researching hosts found that the ongoing cost is the same as squarespace, and the latter doesn't have a high up-front cost, either.

of the two, I slightly prefered Prophoto

@AJHenderson They look excellent
All hosts are at least $9/mo for even the most basic packages, though
I don't even need SSL
Uh, all very good points. Now I'm at a loss again.
@AJHenderson The only gap is photo hosting. If I go with a shared host with "unlimited" storage, does the WP structure allow for easy album handling with "download all" options?

I'm not all that familiar with squarespace. Do they have an ability to export would be one of my main questions

@AJHenderson Export?

Anonymous
@AJHenderson I think they do iirc

Anonymous
3:27 AM
@AndyML your content, in case their ship sinks

ug ran out and bought a new pair of headphones cuz I lost the old ones and the left side of the new ones is dead

@AndyML my main concern with turn key solutions is that you be able to move to another platform down the road

Anonymous
@rfusca what headphones?

and I don't know enough about squarespace. I've heard good things about them, but they came out after I had moved in to the dedicated market

@AJHenderson I'm not hosting a significant amount of content, though. 5 pages at the most. If I include albums, I'm not concerned about exporting them.

3:29 AM
and yeah, WP has extensive gallery support made even more extensive through plugins

Anonymous
@rfusca Pioneer HDJ-500 here, sorta inexpensive, after five months they lost the bass' bassest in the right ear ;_;

@AJHenderson Any good ones you can point me toward?

I use NextGen on ajhenderson.com, though I have only played around with a little bit of its feature set

@PatoSáinz nothing too crazy, just need something to listen carefully when doing this editing. these - bestbuy.com/site/around-the-ear-headphones/…$pcmcat143000050011&cp=1&lp=1

the galleries on ajhendersonphotography are actually part of the Keres template
but indirectly driven by WP galleries

3:31 AM
@AJHenderson Am I setting myself up for disaster by hosting galleries on a shared host? They say unlimited everything, but I'm sure there's fine print.

@PatoSáinz that stinks

@AndyML depends on the host, the big question will be how fast they provide data
a lot of times, you may end up finding that the unlimited servers respond kind of slow

Anonymous
@rfusca it can be temporarily fixed by rising the volume a little and blowing inside the speaker, still I'm disappointed

@AJHenderson looks nice

Anonymous
because I know Pioneer makes the best gear (maybe not headphones, AudioTechnica, BeyerDynamics, AKG and Senn are those)

3:33 AM
@rfusca I make sure not to lose my headphones
but then again, mine probably cost a bit more than yours did

@AJHenderson lol
@AJHenderson well i think I left them at church at the media desk, but its too long of a drive there
and i need some both places

and by a bit I mean a big intense ton

lol
indeed
nicest pair I ever had were around 300 probably

@rfusca well, that atleast gets close
less than double is closer than most get

lol
what do you have?

3:35 AM
though I suppose technically I only paid $136 for them
but I traded in my broken E5s
I've got shure se 535s
interesting, apparently they now have a quad-driver version, but I think I can pass
seeing as they doubled the cost to go from 3 drivers to 4

lol nice

if it was $600 for the 846, I'd consider it, but not $999

hmmm... Might try wordpress from my synology for a few months to see how that works...

@AndyML the other thing about wordpress is that you have a lot of people in here that know it well
and there is actually an entire SE community about wordpress as well

@AJHenderson That's definitely a plus

3:43 AM
the other thing with using a host provider is you can potentially use other services as well
such as setting up an owncloud
which is really useful for file distribution and password protected sharing
that's actually the backend I use for most of the photos I link in here
that's the root of the shared directory for content I post on SE
though if it's going in the Q/A side of things I generally imgur it to avoid content getting lost
but for chat, I use that share

@AJHenderson My sinology takes care of that part. 3tb of easy access storage

ah, running from your home connection?

@AJHenderson mhmm

I suppose that works as long as they aren't downloading it more than once, though for a shared host you might not get much faster than a decent home connection anyway

3:59 AM
@AJHenderson the speeds are something I'm unfamiliar with. I'll try WP out of my home and see how that goes.

1 hour later…
5:03 AM
!@#!@#1@#!@$!#!@#^$^#@%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I missed the stinking electrical socket in the bottom of the frame
curse you tiny LCD screen on the back of cameras

5:32 AM
Don't blame the camera. You missed the socket, but the camera did not.
;)

@EsaPaulasto ya ya ya :P
luckily it was low enough to crop out

Could not retouch it out then?
Just like a red pimple on a face in portrait photo - off you go, socket!

@EsaPaulasto Video, much harder to do

Ouch, ic

But, it was a minor crop

5:37 AM
That's the spirit, a bright side was found :)

5:54 AM
@EsaPaulasto the bright side is that its 2am on easter and I'm relatively close to being done lol

6:38 AM
:)
It's 9:40 a.m. here and and hour ago I hid candies around the property, and all has been found already by my clever daughter :)
Next year I'll need harder to find hiding spots.

6:57 AM
nice

Q: How can I take good interior pictures (for selling the house)?

Brent.LongboroughI'm about to put my house on the market, and I'd like to hear some tips for making the best possible photographs, specifically for this purpose. Among things I should like to hear comments about are these: Use a fairly wide-angle lens Use low ISO and small aperture for sharpness and low noise ...

Comm. Wiki?

5:32 PM
@AJHenderson the church lighting goes flawlessly for weeks. Easter service - the whole thing goes belly up for no reason lol

@rfusca that's no good
we thankfully had a fairly smooth service
though I question the sanity of the decision to put two electrics guitars (with amps) and an acoustic all one the same side of the stage
stage volume was LOUD
but it's easter, so we just made the music a bit louder than usual over all
and it did sound good

nice
@AJHenderson ya, i still don't know what happened. its like the lights froze. for awhile neither the new computer setup nor the old manual board would control the lights

bizar

@AJHenderson it was

6:06 PM
yay, and now my baby's site has an SSL cert and a dedicated IP address so none of my more technically literate friends can track it back to my server
I suppose the really really determined person could do a brute force reflection attack to see what domains the mail server accepts relays for
but if they are that determined, they can know the baby's name early
