2:04 PM
wibble

2:37 PM
@JamWheel wibble?

yeh
why not

i...don't know what that means

it doesn't really mean anything

of course not

wibble wibble wibblites

2:45 PM
lol

...

How's wibbles?
jeez, don't ppl get tetchy if they're downvoted in the PotW
'Why, for the love of god, WHY?!?!'
2
<crickets>

ya, its a personal attack
generally, you can usually count on at least as many downvotes as there are other photos in the competition

hang on
r u suggesting that the other entrants downvote their competitors?!

never

2:56 PM
Seem to be some display issues with mine
Some folks seeing it too bright

surely you should just count up votes? I guess SE can't handle that though

Now here's some windmill-tilting!

windmill tilting

is that like a more subtle and destructive form of cow tipping?

2:57 PM
@ElendilTheTall on 2 of my 3 monitors, it looks near solid white background

a la Don Quixote.

on my calibrated monitor it looks fine

@rfusca hmmm. Well, I've adjusted it to the point where I've lost detail on the lower wing

@ElendilTheTall is your monitor calibrated?

@ElendilTheTall i'm not suggesting you change it

2:58 PM
I have two screens, one macbook one pc, neither calibrated more than adjusting brightness, and it's fine on both

yes but without calibrating, you can't be sure of how it will look to others. Of course, you can only be sure how it will look to others when they also have a calibrated monitor :)
anyway, I still think, if you can, you should stop people being able to downvote pics for IOTW
you either vote for it or you vote for something else

that would be fairer

if everybody can downvote and everybody can upvote, its a wash. It would make no difference

Kind of like AV

interestingly enough, downvotes n the PotW are more of a recent thing. If you look back on early contests, there weren't near the number of downvotes

3:03 PM
cracking shot here:
though the composition could be better
it's kind of 'BIRD!'

3:16 PM
@rfusca it only doesn't matter if people go in and downvote all the ones they aren't voting for and upvote the one they like... I just upvoted the ones I liked
@ElendilTheTall depends on where you're viewing the image from i guess.

I've just been downvoted!

So if everyone upvotes one and downvotes the others, isn't that like a two-point net swing for each voter (not that it really matters that much for PotW)? Maybe I need more coffee before I do that math...

What have I done to deserve this?!

@JamWheel just because you're choosing not to use the system as it is, doesn't make it incorrect. But you're correct in that it would change the dynamic if some people are already only voting one way. I have three levels of voting: "this sucks, I really don't want to see it" -1 , "I don't particularly like it, but I won't cry if it wins " 0, and "i would like this to win" +1.

Goodbye cruel world
<jumps onto pungee sticks>

3:21 PM
@ElendilTheTall lol

<runs and grabs his gear to sell> well, at least something good came out of that...

I...curse you....with....my dying breath

...i think i can live with that

You'd risk a curse for a slight upgrade of your camera body?

pretty much, ya

3:29 PM
To be specific, the curse would mean that your point of focus would always just be behind/in front of where it should be

damn you

bwahahahaha
a lifetime of soft-eyed portraits, missed moments and blurry astro-photos awaits
(this is one hell of a dying breath)

i curse thee with blown highlights in your afterlife

ha! I don't believe in an afterlife
sweet oblivion for me

then
umm...
damn

3:32 PM
You can curse me as much as you like, I'll be considerably past caring.

:P

You'll be the one with exposure issues, pearly gates and shining clouds and all that
nightmare
either that or darkness and flames
good luck

eh, if its all white, no problem - its like taking a picture of snow

@rfusca indeed, but unless it is a level playing field it isn't right. A level playing field should be enforced is what I am saying :) For a fair system...

@JamWheel i don't understand how the current field isn't level. You can vote exactly the same way I do, if you choose to

3:50 PM
Why is it so many people post 'what settings for x situation'?

@ElendilTheTall lol ya

Surely A) the effects of settings are pretty simple to grasp

whenever I see that, you pretty much know that there's a fundamental misunderstanding of how it all works going on

and B) it's digital, take a couple of tests and adjust
heck, stick it on P and let the camera do it

and C) We can't possibly tell you what settings to actually use

3:52 PM
@rfusca if I am aware of the fact everyone is voting in one way isn't the same as choosing to... just the fact you can do it in different ways though means it isn't a level playing field
that's why voting systems have instructions and have to work in that way or the vote isn't counted
@rfusca you can within reason - you can give guideline settings for some things, like air shows

@rfusca I'm tempted to answer 'Adjust the aperture, ISO and shutter speed until correct exposure is indicated, assuming the shutter speed is fast enough to prevent blur'

@JamWheel thats nonsense. If I'm playing football, I could choose not to defend and only try to score goals, but it'd be idiotic. Doing so doesn't mean that the playing field isn't level just because I can do it different.

@rfusca only if you know you're allowed to defend
football you could see the other team are defending
i can't see (to my knowledge) how other people have voted
analagising it to a game isn't appropriate here really. Doing so with a polling system would be more appropriate
everyone is told how the voting works and the system enforces that through rejection of inccorrectly applied votes

well you can see that they are downvoting, you know that people are downvoting

unless you're name is George W Bush and the people voting are in FLorida

3:56 PM
...click the number of votes and it splits it out. I think you have enough rep to do that

see, I didn't know I could do that :)
hence the 'to my knowledge' disclaimer

so, you didn't read the rules
don't blame the game cuz you didn't read the rules

in the rules it tells you that you can see the split of votes applied to something?

dammit, +7 and -4?!
robbing gits

"view vote counts" is listed under your earned privs

3:58 PM
That, my friends, is what you call a dichotomy

the rules might well say you can downvote tbh - i don't think i read them... in which case Ctrl+z everything I said

and the rules of the contest, definitely talk about downvoting

it might well be, I have never looked at my privs
and that doesn't say "view vote count detail"
I can see vote counts...
but I would say that is the aggregate total
:D

ok, you're definitely grasping at straws here :P

@ElendilTheTall I created 3 other accounts to get that -4

4:00 PM
Damn your eyes

lol

@JamWheel is it possible to be both more subtle and more destructive at the same time?

@rfusca maybe... lol
@jrista Yes, subtley more descructive just means it takes longer to happen but has a more catastrophic effect
also, tipping over a cow can do limited damage
tipping a windmill over will probably break it a lot

@rfusca There wasn't nearly as much downvotable content either, though.

<--- Tenuous Man!

4:02 PM
@JamWheel lol...'tilting'! not 'tipping'
@jrista eh, i don't know about
like take a look at the last one on meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/531/… - if that was posted now, it'd have some downvotes
there were only two total downvotes that whole week

I never said there were not any downvotables
just not as many as lately

possibly
i just think there's definitely a downvote shift though

I'm just waiting for a week where nothing is what anyone wants to see on the home page, and it'll be a battle for whoever has the LEAST DOWNVOTES...with everything having at least a -1

@rfusca tilt a building far enough and it will tip over :)

lol
@JamWheel 'tilt' = 'to joust'...not to lean the tower over ;)

4:05 PM
I've started downvoting more, but when you get crap like a blurry, poorly white balanced, off-the-cuff shot of some rinky dinky little shop titled "hats" (with no hats i sight)...well, there is no option BUT to downvote

@jrista We'd need a "sucks least" badge.

lol
yeah

@jrista eh, won't happen, somebody will always save it

@rfusca I truly hope

to joust?!

4:06 PM
@JamWheel yup

I don't know what people think the PotW is
a dumping ground for their newest random shot?

hence the insanity of it

Poo of the week?

a place to get photo critiques?
@JamWheel soon enough

@jrista Hey - that's a pretty good idea. We need one of those, you know.

4:07 PM
Do people just not think "Oh, this is going to be shown on the main site header for a week! Wow...my photo sucks, I wouldn't want to look at it for a week! I'll wait to post until I have something better to show, something that people might appreciate."

@rfusca tilting in the context of jousting looks an awful lot like the jousting event where you tip the guy off the horse with a long stick... :-) The process of tipping is kicked off by tilting, so I am sort of right

@jrista remember, people are out there like that dude yesterday. Who genuinely believe that their work is phenomenal
@JamWheel lol indeed, i'll give you that

you should change it to GPoTW

@rfusca heh, yeah...maybe thats just it

Great Photo of The Week

4:09 PM
A-Cube...arte de square

more declarative

@jrista i really think that it is, i don't think that they're putting up stuff that they think isn't good....they really think its wonderful. And to them, maybe it is

Well, it's not like we've had all that much awe-inspiring stuff the last couple weeks. At this point, "sucks least" might just be good enough.

@rfusca Meh. I know my work sucks.
So I don't bother posting it.
@rfusca Meh. I know my work sucks.

@jrista ditto for the most part. but thats because you've looked at some truly good work and you have a firmer grasp of reality

4:11 PM
man...timeouts...

you have all seen x-factor right?

@JamWheel ?

it is full of people that show up convinced they are the next big musical thing

lol
thats called American Idol

and are genuinely completely deluded

4:11 PM
@JamWheel oh ya, we have the same type of shows here

not in the UK it isn't

omg

:P
So

@jrista I think they're doing a US version of the X factor here

American Idol is a true show of human stupidity

4:12 PM
PoTW becomes Photo SE - Idol... Factor

I dont even like watching the part of American Idol where the selectees actually compete

then at least the delusion will be somewhat justified
@jrista me either, the comedy section at the beginning is usually worthwhile though

the only entertaining part of that show is where all the raging idiots try to get selected, come in wearing their insane clothes, with their ridiculous hairdos, and their truly atrocious "music and dance", and get laughed off the stage

and America seems to have a more honed brand of general lunatic
ours are usually laughable

@JamWheel yeah, I won't dispute that one

4:13 PM
but America takes it to the next level

there are far too many lunatics here in the great americas :\

@JamWheel Ours figured out long ago how to run for office.

@JamWheel its the lack of correct spelling - it drives us insane :P

Another great showcase of american lunacy is peopleofwalmart.com/photos...

yeah, it must do :-) One day you will master it

4:15 PM
just flat out pathetic

lol
the first few on there are quite impressive

I highly recommend browsing the southern states...

@jrista gee, thanks

when you find the gigantic women with angel wings hanging out of their open-back shirts, the topples fat men riding gocarts, women dragging their children around the store, kicking and screaming on the floor, via a leash, you'll truly understand the natural state of america. :(
^--- kid on a leash

@jrista ok, do not knock the kid leash till you have kids. That said, you should also not actually drag by the leash

4:21 PM
oh, I understand keeping a kid under lock and key
its the dragging a kid through the store on a leash that is horrid

indeed, yes
thats terrible

i made my friend's child cry the other day
apparently she didn't like being picked up by her feet

but when the leash keeps your kid from trying to climb into the area with the bears at the zoo, you'll be grateful (and yes, my kid tried to)

shrugs

yeah, I don't really have a problem with leashes...some kids need em

4:23 PM
my kid loves to be turned upside down

naughty cupboards are the way forward
none of this naughty step namby pamby rubbish

I do have a problem with dragging your kid through the store because your an incompetent parent who is too wrapped up in your own self-service to even realize how heinous and cruel your actually being.

what if the kid enjoys being dragged?

considering its July 4th for the photo contest and we have a strong US population here, i'm surprised nobody tried a patriotic photo

also, what if the kid is doing the whole "lay down and scream" bit
you can't just stand there and wait for them to fall asleep
i personally would send them along one of the aisles, like in curling

4:25 PM
@JamWheel It doesn't matter...you don't drag a kid through a filthy walmart floor.
@JamWheel You take care of your kid first, then take care of the shopping. Take the kid outside, settle them down, whatever is necessary...but deal with the kid first. Don't go dragging them around on the floor.

but then you teach the kid that they can pull that when they like and you will have to stop whatever you're doing to deal with them, and they will play on it
you could always tie the kid to the nearest immovable object and come back for them... like people do with dogs

Jam, please, don't ever procreate

^--- ditto

:D
my point about teaching the kid how to manipulate you is still valid
it is the same as with a dog - if it jumps up and you stroke it, it will jump up at everyone

@rfusca I thought about that, but I didn't have anything picked out ahead of time when I noticed the date.

4:29 PM
@JamWheel dealing with the issue, doesn't mean not to punish for misbehavior

IF the kid doesn't like being dragged (and I can't see why they wouldn't) that is a punishment... ?
hehe
i have to log off for a bit - be back later with some more hot parenting tips

lol

@JamWheel Er, "deal with the kid" means take the necessary action to properly correct their behavior...not teach them to manipulate you
I would say that letting a kid be and remain unruly and disobedient is a far better way to teach them that such behavior is acceptable. Taking them aside and punnishing them outside is simply a courtesy to the rest of the people in the store...but if a child is being disobedient, the appropriate action should be taken regardless.
I also don't believe in bribing a child...which is a tactic I see all too often, even with some of my friends and their children. Of all the tactics one can use to correct behavior, a bribe is probably the worst.
Ignoring a child and letting them "tire themselves out" is also not a proper course of action...which is how I see dragging a child along a filthy walmart floor. Just a way to ignore them.

@jrista depends on when the bribe happens to me. If you're going into the store and you say "If you're good in here, we'll get you a princess doll" it strengthens good behavior. If they're being bad and its "we'll get you a princess doll" to stop, its bad.
@JamWheel you should bring your wisdom over to parenting.se ;)
well i gotta go grab some lunch before a meeting

@rfusca yeah, I guess if its properly used
I see it used incorrectly most of the time, as in your latter example

4:37 PM
very true

4:55 PM
@rfusca Yeah, I think I'm probably the influencer of that particular trend. As I've said elsewhere in chat, I downvote with wild abandon in the POtW threads, and carry no residual guilt about doing-so. I think the most recent trend I've seen with the POtW threads is that people are starting to leave feedback on photos they don't like.
I've been plesantly surprised at the relative lack of arguments this feedback has caused...

@JayLancePhotography ya, we've not seen much in the way of "no, youz is wr0ng! I am the M@st3r!"
@JayLancePhotography people are starting to leave feedback because of all the folks requesting it when their stuff is downvoted

5:35 PM
@jrista of course I am being somewhat flippant :)
@DLambert bit of an aircraft... any clue why you have posted it? :)

@JamWheel Just a bit of RW&B for @rfusca.

lol
thunderbirds or something?

Early -- an F-100.

nice

The bare aluminum is a bit of a giveaway -- they're all-white now.

5:46 PM
well, perhaps a give away to anyone who knows anything about the Thunderbirds other than incorrectly set altimeters :)

(ouch)

lol
not having been to any shows in the US
something I would like to rectify
and not being particularly interested in modern jets either... the F-100 is old enough to be interesting though

The one I get to most often doesn't get the T-Birds or Blue Angels in -- the airspace isn't big enough for them.
I saw the T-Birds a few years ago, though, at the Gathering of Mustangs & Legends. You would've like that, I think.

yeh, I think so

The F-100 was at the US AF Museum -- lots of oddities there.
My son runs around that place like he's a tour guide.

5:54 PM
lol
i am generally more interested in operating types but i do enjoy seeing some of the stranger / rarer types static

There's a aviation museum in Ohio thats awesome.

That's the one.

yup
i thought so

i was in Ohio in 2001 - at Columbus
2001? maybe 2000
first and last time I made it to the US
developed an annoying desire to avoid flying on commercial aircraft at all costs since then...

Yeah, I can understand. If you ever have the urge again, fly through Detroit. It'll cure you for life.

5:58 PM
i came in via detroit to get to columbus

Lucky you.

lol
i didn't stray off the airport
we got our gate moved repeatedly from one end of the bloody airport to another
about 3 times
i just sat with the pilot of our flight in the end
followed him

atlanta airport is INSANE

Nice. Passes the time, though.
