yes but without calibrating, you can't be sure of how it will look to others. Of course, you can only be sure how it will look to others when they also have a calibrated monitor :)
anyway, I still think, if you can, you should stop people being able to downvote pics for IOTW

@rfusca it only doesn't matter if people go in and downvote all the ones they aren't voting for and upvote the one they like... I just upvoted the ones I liked

So if everyone upvotes one and downvotes the others, isn't that like a two-point net swing for each voter (not that it really matters that much for PotW)? Maybe I need more coffee before I do that math...
@JamWheel just because you're choosing not to use the system as it is, doesn't make it incorrect. But you're correct in that it would change the dynamic if some people are already only voting one way. I have three levels of voting: "this sucks, I really don't want to see it" -1 , "I don't particularly like it, but I won't cry if it wins " 0, and "i would like this to win" +1.
@rfusca indeed, but unless it is a level playing field it isn't right. A level playing field should be enforced is what I am saying :) For a fair system...
@rfusca if I am aware of the fact everyone is voting in one way isn't the same as choosing to... just the fact you can do it in different ways though means it isn't a level playing field
that's why voting systems have instructions and have to work in that way or the vote isn't counted
@rfusca you can within reason - you can give guideline settings for some things, like air shows

@JamWheel thats nonsense. If I'm playing football, I could choose not to defend and only try to score goals, but it'd be idiotic. Doing so doesn't mean that the playing field isn't level just because I can do it different.

I've started downvoting more, but when you get crap like a blurry, poorly white balanced, off-the-cuff shot of some rinky dinky little shop titled "hats" (with no hats i sight)...well, there is no option BUT to downvote
Do people just not think "Oh, this is going to be shown on the main site header for a week! Wow...my photo sucks, I wouldn't want to look at it for a week! I'll wait to post until I have something better to show, something that people might appreciate."
@rfusca tilting in the context of jousting looks an awful lot like the jousting event where you tip the guy off the horse with a long stick... :-) The process of tipping is kicked off by tilting, so I am sort of right
@jrista i really think that it is, i don't think that they're putting up stuff that they think isn't good....they really think its wonderful. And to them, maybe it is
the only entertaining part of that show is where all the raging idiots try to get selected, come in wearing their insane clothes, with their ridiculous hairdos, and their truly atrocious "music and dance", and get laughed off the stage
when you find the gigantic women with angel wings hanging out of their open-back shirts, the topples fat men riding gocarts, women dragging their children around the store, kicking and screaming on the floor, via a leash, you'll truly understand the natural state of america. :(
I do have a problem with dragging your kid through the store because your an incompetent parent who is too wrapped up in your own self-service to even realize how heinous and cruel your actually being.

@JamWheel You take care of your kid first, then take care of the shopping. Take the kid outside, settle them down, whatever is necessary...but deal with the kid first. Don't go dragging them around on the floor.
but then you teach the kid that they can pull that when they like and you will have to stop whatever you're doing to deal with them, and they will play on it
you could always tie the kid to the nearest immovable object and come back for them... like people do with dogs
@JamWheel Er, "deal with the kid" means take the necessary action to properly correct their behavior...not teach them to manipulate you
I would say that letting a kid be and remain unruly and disobedient is a far better way to teach them that such behavior is acceptable. Taking them aside and punnishing them outside is simply a courtesy to the rest of the people in the store...but if a child is being disobedient, the appropriate action should be taken regardless.
I also don't believe in bribing a child...which is a tactic I see all too often, even with some of my friends and their children. Of all the tactics one can use to correct behavior, a bribe is probably the worst.
Ignoring a child and letting them "tire themselves out" is also not a proper course of action...which is how I see dragging a child along a filthy walmart floor. Just a way to ignore them.
@jrista depends on when the bribe happens to me. If you're going into the store and you say "If you're good in here, we'll get you a princess doll" it strengthens good behavior. If they're being bad and its "we'll get you a princess doll" to stop, its bad.

@rfusca Yeah, I think I'm probably the influencer of that particular trend. As I've said elsewhere in chat, I downvote with wild abandon in the POtW threads, and carry no residual guilt about doing-so. I think the most recent trend I've seen with the POtW threads is that people are starting to leave feedback on photos they don't like.
I've been plesantly surprised at the relative lack of arguments this feedback has caused...
