@Pixie Well, you may be not so happy to know that most of the western releases of Harvest Moon / Rune Factory felt they need to remove any not-straight marriage option... I assume the reasoning was the same that caused the censoring on the last Sailor Moon season where I live: having things like same sex couples or male Sailors would hinder the developing mind of the young, defenseless children watching that and (horror music play) turn them into evil gays
(notice: no offense intended in the above, I just tried to use the same wording the original article had. I had to translate, but I tried to keep the meaning, including the not-so-nice wording)
(also, for anyone else wondering... yes, we managed to be so bad. We also used to censor any Japanese name for fear exposition to different cultures would damage little children too. It became especially "funny" when you see a show like Doraemon calling the Dorayaki each time a different way - krapfen, chocolate biscuit, cookie....)

@Derpy AFAIK there was only one HM game with anything resembling gay marriage. It was a female-only option and was framed in game as being best friends, though in most respects operated as marriage.
Unless something has changed recently.

@Pixie I think that it was at least 3 different games. Let me check.

The one I'm thinking of is Harvest Moon DS.
And the Sailor Starlights are women disguising themselves as men but I know what you mean. That season was simply not released in the US in any form. US companies did and I think sometimes still do that with Japanese food; if I remember right, the Disney dub of Doraemon did it recently. The 4kids dub of Pokemon, well...
Oh, that wasn't the one I was going to link, but it works too (there you can see where they actually went in and edited onigiri into other things). But this is the funniest:

8:21 AM
@Pixie Weren't they male "reincarnation" of female warriors? Something more like Princess Shapir
@Pixie I think I clearly remember an option to marry the Harvest King as a male in Animal Paradise, but I may be wrong. Still, they removed the same-sex marriage option in at least one of the western releases
@Pixie Amateurs. When my country localized Kimagure Orange Road, the list of "adaptations" was made into a book. A 200 pages one.

@Derpy No, they're just women who disguise themselves as male popstars when they come to earth. In the manga their bodies didn't change, they just crossdressed.

@Pixie Forgive me for my ignorance then, but what about the original anime (not the remade new one which was changed to be more like the original manga)? I think I remember they where supposed to have a male body and actually transform into females.
Anyway, either way they felt they needed to edit it...

@Derpy That's what I'm describing. It's a bit confusing to explain, but in the anime, they're still women. They magically change their bodies when they come to Earth and disguise themselves as men, unlike the manga, in which they only crossdressed. (The anime decided to do this probably because there are very few male characters in Stars; even Tuxedo goes away for a while.)
(They're aliens who protect a different princess than the Solar System senshi.)

8:40 AM
@Pixie Ok, I think I got it. I had it a little different. You are telling me that they knew to be females and then came on earth as males to disguise. I always had it as they begin born on earth as males and then discover to be the reincarnations of females Stars
Anyway, it doesn't really change what they did.
But as I said... we are bad.
The only thing that saved Tokyo Grand Fathers to be butchered was that it was only released as DVD.

@Derpy I believe some countries did give Haruka this kind of backstory, after changing her to a guy. xD

@Pixie Nope, we just removed any hint of her female-female relation with the other character-I-cant-remember-the-name -_-

But what you're describing sounds pretty standard. The only reason the US didn't do anything like that with the Sailor Starlights is because no one was willing to actually tackle it.
I'm pretty excited for it to be released down the road by Viz because it'll be the first time Stars has been released in the US ever.

@Pixie May be standard (and I still think we manage to raise the bad-average), but still sad.

Oh yes, definitely sad.

8:48 AM
You know what also always made me wonder?
Why do they censor female partial nudity in anime like Doraemon but are perfectly fine with male full nudity.

Unfortunate double-standards. Breasts and such are considered inherently sexual.
And that changes the way they're portrayed, also.

Yes, I am aware of that, and I am aware also that statistically speaking it would be expected that you get the idea that females need more protection that males (meaning that the news usually contain more reports about abused females than males), but they often bring it to a different point.
It is like that form of male chauvinism that you talked about some time ago.
You protect females because they need it and they need it because they are defenseless and inferior to males.

It really isn't about protection, it's about sexualization. Again: bodyparts traditionally viewed as female bodyparts are considered inherently sexual. The goal isn't so much to protect women in this case but to protect children from them.
This is why, for example, in the US, men can go shirtless in public but women cannot, and women get problems for breastfeeding in public. Breasts are considered something that should not be seen.

@Pixie I don't think they do that just for that reason, at least where I live. There have been multiple record of newspaper or other media calling it out as "pornography". I just would love to know why Bulma taking a shower can be seen as such and kid Goku swimming naked to hunt a fish isn't.

9:07 AM
@Derpy Again, it's called pornography because breasts are considered inherently sexual. Simply having them visible = pornography. And in the case of Bulma's shower scene? That was there for fanservice reasons. Goku swimming naked was not (and, in the same way, Mei and Satsuki taking a bath with their dad in Totoro was not).

@Pixie I know it was fanservice, and didn't want to imply that i was really fine with it. I had just taken it as an example because of some scandal it made in my country (ok, actually the scandal was made because of the pretty worse scene when Goku gets the golden nimbus)

My point is that this widespread view of the female body means that a) it will be considered sexual when visible (whether it is sexual or isn't) and b) it is much more likely to be portrayed in a way that is actually sexualized.

9:35 AM
@Pixie And I think the same too. What I said is that this seem also another result of male chauvinism. "Hide your body, I don't need to".
Basically, I wasn't advocating for the actual correctness of allowing or disallowing fanservice or such. I was just presenting yet another case of genders not considered as equals

Ah, okay. It seemed like you were asking for explanation when you started.

@Pixie sorry if it came out that way. All my question was meant as rhetorical ones. I had already in my mind the answers, and they were the same you gave.
BTW... you know what? Now I wonder....
Does a "male succubus devil" have at least been conceived by one of the many culture in the world (I am talking about religions mostly, not anime or other such media)?

Incubus?
That is the male equivalent of a succubus.

There are cultures that have that to?

The same ones that have succubi, in fact.
An incubus is a demon in male form who, according to mythological and legendary traditions, lies upon sleepers, especially women, in order to engage in sexual activity with them. Its female counterpart is the succubus. Superstitious folk have for many centuries told salacious tales of incubi and succubi, and Genesis 6 is a passage used to support the credibility of such stories. These terms remain current among heavy metal bands and occult groups today. Some traditions hold that repeated sexual activity with an incubus or succubus may result in the deterioration of health, or even death. 2...

9:44 AM
The Genesis had that? Wow, that was unexpected...
This is good in a certain way.
At least the role of tempter is not limited to the female only.
I wonder how may priests actually remember that..

Merlin's father was supposed to be one in some sources.

@Pixie I always taken that part as a "by force" rather that "by seduction". I should re-read the Historia and see if it has something about that.

Traditionally, incubi and succubi appear in dreams or accost sleepers.

10:26 AM
@Pixie I know, the part that made me wonder (and that I didn't though of before) is if there were report of incubus in old folks tales or religious context as opposed to them begin something introduced by modern fantasy books (or rpgs)
You know, I was basing my view on the inquisition ideas
The Inquisition is a group of institutions within the judicial system of the Roman Catholic Church whose aim was to combat heresy. It started in 12th-century France to combat religious sectarianism, in particular the Cathars and the Waldensians. Other groups which were investigated later include the Spiritual Franciscans, the Hussites (followers of Jan Hus) and Beguines. Beginning in the 1250s, inquisitors were generally chosen from members of the Dominican Order, to replace the earlier practice of using local clergy as judges. The term Medieval Inquisition covers these courts up through the 14th...
> Kramer wrote in section I that: "all witchcraft comes from carnal lust which is in women insatiable".
With such base assumption, I expected that most cultures would see succubus as a female only thing and wouldn't even consider the idea of incubus

11:04 AM
[blank stare] Apparently, Hitotsu-Me Giant was simply... Cyclops in the original YuGiOh. I've given up trying to understand the decisions of 4kids.
Things I have ascertained, however: the people in this show make terrible decisions. Frequently. The mere thought of of psychic powers and ghosts terrifies people, but a kid being possessed by an ancient Egyptian pharaoh and temporarily growing to twice his height every card battle is not even worth comment. Jonouchi is really, really unobservant, but his sense of smell is amazing.

Whenever there's a gun in YGO, they edit it out but don't replace it with anything.

@Pixie I think word of god actually stated that the height growth was supposed to be only on screen to help watchers to recognize the two characters.
@Pixie You know that the first episodes of the show where never aired, right?

@Derpy I dunno, the thing in the censored version looks way more dangerous.

@Derpy Season 0 as it's usually called. It's actually a different series. Not available in the US, but the manga is.
The early manga and season 0 are... pretty wild.

11:16 AM
@Miniman Piko Piko hammer? :P

@Derpy Heh.

@Pixie Yes, the '98 anime. I think they were supposed to be connected. They skipped the first 7 volumes in the second adaptation because they had already been told.
Anyway, they planned to have that broadcasted too where I live, then they discovered "how nice Yami was originally"

@Derpy The story in the manga is continuous, but it doesn't quite make sense to view Duel Monsters as a direct continuation of the first anime from what I have seen of both (though I still need to finish the '98 one).
@Derpy Yeah, it's... very quickly obvious. xD

@Pixie The problem is that the original ones from 98 covers the first 7 volumes and ... all the rest up to about vol 58
the new one just skip the first seven

It covers the manga loosely and does some of its own stuff too, from what I hear. So it's more of a different continuity.

11:22 AM
Yep. Thinking of it , you are right. Ignore my previous claim. Anyway they had to change other thing too..
I'm pretty sure my Dark Magician Girl action figure has a pentacle on the gem on the dress, not an heart.

They also decided that Kaiba needed lime green hair, for some reason.
But yeah, when I started reading the manga, I was a bit surprised.

@Pixie I always wondered how the manga and the show could have been if the card game never existed.
Probably, a lot darker.

Well, as you can see... xD
But the card game definitely overtook it.
A great business decision.

@Pixie I think that pixel eyesight or amplified heart beat are worse...
(trad: yes, I have read that too :P)

Yes, Seto. Your ~11 year old brother that you left all alone to manage a multi-million company with known enemies got kidnapped... shocking.
It's a wonderful parade of terrible decisions.

11:34 AM
@Pixie At least they are terrible different decisions.
I suppose that you still aren't up to date with MLP:FiM?

Terrible, hilarious decisions. And nope, not up to date.

Every single problem, every one is because.... they don't talk
and the best part?
One of the only villain that seemed plain bad now thanks to the comics has fallen to the same problem
(not that I am mad about that, actually I like the idea of having that one "reformed")

There was one case in which... you've seen YGO, yes? Remember Jonouchi's duel with Mai at the beginning?
So, in the previous episode, Yugi's monsters lost their field power ups because flying monsters had magical resistance to them. This was discussed at length. What is the very first thing Jo does when he starts his battle with Mai? Attacks a flying monster with a normal monster, depending on the field power up bonus it will lose. Yugi explains again. So what does Jo do on the second turn?
The same exact thing.

@Pixie I think I will use thunderbolt on your geodude.

lol

11:44 AM
"Oh no! Electric doesn't work on rock Pokemon!" "In that case... come back, Pikachu. Go, Jolteon. USE THUNDERBOLT." That is more or less what happened here except he lost both his monsters in the process.

@Pixie One should do a show/web comic showing the life of tv-show Ash if they did go by the game rules.

I only saw like, maybe a half a dozen at most episodes of Yugi Oh,... I could not do more than that
at the time, brief as the time was, I did play the card game

@trogdor It it was a very funny show. For the wrong reasons.

and the complete lack of any ability or want to actually stay true to the rules did not sit well
it was funny, but I also was annoyed by it
my brain is just wired that way, I could not continue watching that stuff XD

But but but... they also had Saint Seiya!

11:48 AM
It was a favorite of mine when I was 12. I'm now watching the original subbed version because I noticed it was on Crunchyroll. I still love it. It's so ridiculous, I have come to embrace it for that.

I don't mind other people liking it
and I can see at least one reason you would
I just wouldn't go back to watching it myself
XD

I can absolutely understand people not having the patience for it. xD

I did derive some entertainment from it myself, I just also derived annoyance

And oh, the animation is terrible. They keep closing in on Seto's fingers, which look broken and move like gloves filled with jelly.

11:50 AM
I can not handle those things in a cocktail together

Nice Rhadamanthys cosplay Joey...
@trogdor Time ago, my country used to have a show broadcasted on the national TV channel. It was about supernatural stuff... and it was bad. Really bad

I have seen bad supernatural movies/TV shows

Full of unsupported claims, interviews with unqualified people and made up stuff.

probably not the one you are talking about of course
ah

@trogdor Wait.... it wasn't a SHOW. It was supposed to be a documentary

11:56 AM
all the ones I ever saw were not trying to convince people of stuff
@Derpy we have something like that, actually at least 3 things off the top of my head

Basically it was "Tin Foil Hats meets Discovery Channel"
It was so bad... that it was good
I remember watching it... and then discussing it online the day after.

we have a show specifically about ghosts, one about a variety of monsters that supposedly actually exist,.. and one on the "history chanel" about "ancient aliens"

All for laughter.
Yu-gi-oh we did the same

@Derpy this is very similar to the 3 shows I just mentioned XD

The History Channel evolved from the Hitler channel to the ancient alien conspiracy channel.

11:59 AM
Basically, we invented the "Everything wrong with" years before youtube made it a thing.

@Pixie yeah it pretty much only had WWII stuff in it
even when it was slightly more legit
I say slightly because I have a hard time thinking it was entirely so if it could let itself turn into what it is now XD

@trogdor Best one was the episode claiming Dante was a Templar Knight and hid the Grail in some place I don't remember... in Norwegian lands.

But with YGO, for most people, just watching the Abridged Series is all I can recommend. xD
(Which, if you haven't... do so.)

@Derpy that is pretty hilarious

@Derpy I wish I could watch this now.

12:01 PM
@Pixie is it something on youtube or something?

@trogdor Yes, if 4kids hasn't killed it again. People like tAS more than YGO itself and 4kids doesn't like this. :v
One moment.

of course they don't
I don't honestly blame them
I do blame them for a show based off a game that follows none of said games rules

... you just remembered me I will have to find some other online tv channel that has the new One Piece episodes. Last one died after the license switched owners.

but I don't blame them for not liking a parody of their work, especially a more popular one XD

12:05 PM
I have actually watched some DBZ abriged
is this possibly by the same people?

@trogdor The fun part is when abridged series are more close to the original than the actually edited-and-broadcasted ones

I only ask because naming scheme

YGO:tAS started the abridged series craze. I don't think DBZ is done by the same people.

mk
just curious

Once YGO:tAS happened, people started doing one for just about every series. Mostly they aren't nearly as good. I hear good things about DBZ Abridged, though.

12:06 PM
@Pixie what I have seen is great
keeping in mind I did not watch all of DBZ
I got the most important cliff note episodes and had the rest filled in by a friend who liked it

@trogdor and you really shouldn't either since Kai was made.

but I do basically understand most of the characters and the story well enough to laugh at the jokes DBZ abridged makes
It may also still be decent enough even if you never watched DBZ, not sure, but it is definitely better if you go in knowing some critical stuff
I think
I am definitely n expert on DBZ or anything other than a very casual sort of kind of fan of it

You should know all you need to know to watch YGOtAS. I've seen more of it than I have the actual show myself.

and I still found DBZ abbriged pretty great

"Wait a minute, did you just summon a bunch of monsters in one turn." "Yeah, so?" "That's against the rules!" "Screw the rules I have money!"

12:10 PM
@Pixie I would think I am fine on that count XD
@Pixie pretty much yeah
I think that may be all I need XD

"Not Exodia! No one's ever been able to summon him!" "Is that because it's so rare?" "No, it's because this game makes no sense. Nobody's ever been able to figure out how to do it."

XD
to be fair
when I played the actual game, part of what eventually turned me off of it was all the rules involved

The funny thing is Blue Eyes isn't even very good of a card.

like, even by the time I knew em pretty well, it was a hassle to go over everything in my head about how stuff was supposed to resolve
@Pixie I think it might have been a decent card really early, when no one actually had better stuff
but yeah, it certainly was not for long, at least

Yeah, it was definitely better at the very beginning.

12:14 PM
Am I the only one that had the felling that the Yu-gi-oh rules were at least more easy to remember that the original instantaneous VS interruption magic chain ruling?

I played the YGO card game a looong time ago, but a lot of what I did was a modified version the kids in my afterschool program had come up with so that more of us could play with only one or two decks.

@Pixie want to have real fun? you should try to get your hand on a copy of the old GBA game The Egyptian Gods Card.
that one used the actual show rules for those cards.

Hah. I do love card game video games, too.

The results? To have a chance to fight back you wielding such cards, often the opponent are given like 80k life point.
Yes. 80K

Pfffff. Amazing.

12:18 PM
@Pixie it one of the games that best capture the show spirit.
As such, it doesn't make sense at all :P

Oh, tAS is on Youtube again. Yey.
This thing has been going since I was in high school and apparently put a new episode out just recently. Wow.

@Pixie I started that first episode you linked
I am amused
I think I can honestly like this better just Because it isn't the original show and pokes fun at said original

Yeah. It will likely mercilessly mock the things that bothered you. xD

yeeeeeesssss
hence the amusement
I am a horrible person but I do not care!!!!!????

There's a reason YGOtAS is so good. :P

12:27 PM
Found.
Reshef Of Destruction
The one that had all the three forms of Ra

"It's a shame rich megalomaniacs are immune from the law... otherwise we could just call the police."

@trogdor That was also the reason I watched the original show...
and in the meantime...

lol

@PeterJ new feature request: Users with over 10k rep on LifeHack cannot post answers on other sites of the network :P
someone actually pinned this int the meta starboard??

eh?

12:35 PM
was a joke after someone posted a list of bad question and answers on LifeHack
as the one suggesting to cut open a battery to use it to lit a candle.

ah
cause that's like, smart

or watch a solar eclipse thru the black film found in old floppy disk.

no acid in those or anything, no sir
jeez

A: How can I quickly cool a water bottle?

OriginGet some dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) or liquid nitrogen if you're cool. Dunk your water bottle into one of those for about 30 seconds for dry ice, 5 for liquid nitrogen. This will cool your bottle super-fast and even turn some of the water into ice. To increase the rate of heat transfer away f...

liquid... nitrogen???

dry ice itself is dangerous enough if you don't know what you are doing honestly

12:38 PM
That is why a common "joke" on meta is repeating that someone will get hurt someday following the wonderful suggestions of LH

that being said, liquid nitrogen is not a toy

You understand then why there are user group that don't really like some of the suggestions coming from that site.

Lifehacks are so useful when they require substances I've never seen outside of a laboratory.

I don't hide to be one of them.
@Pixie and be grateful you didn't ! It is like you go for peperkura cardboard armor with fiber glass.... without knowing how poisonous the fiber glass smokes are.

12:54 PM
@Pixie I just finished episode 6, this is making me way too happy

@trogdor I'm rewatching it now, haven't seen it in years. All the things I'm laughing at as I rewatch the original, they mention. xD

I don't even remember any of the characters in basically any way but it still manages to be hilarious

The jokes stand on their own. xD

yes

"Let's sneak on board like Solid Snake!" "Don't our parents even care that we're missing?"

12:57 PM
it doesn't hurt that literally any joke about throwing the rules of the actual game out will most likely land

I'm at the part where Kaiba hacks into the card game and injects a virus into fake Kaiba's Blue Eyes, which makes it melt. I love this show.

lol

Then the Heart of the Cards actually destroys it, somehow.

I hardly remember even the smallest detail of the show
other than that it did constantly do ridiculous things

The above exchange makes no more sense in context. Thing in this show happen mainly to advance the plot such that the right person wins. :v

1:12 PM
You just remembered me the card morph via Time Magician time travel

yeah
I am not saying context matters, I just mean that I wouldn't remember a card getting hacked to melt it, for example XD

Yugi is in a situation where he's actually going to lose? Kaiba will just hack the card game from his underground supercomputer, after jumping out a window into the ocean, being totally okay, and getting to the duelist island unnoticed.

yeah
there is so much deus ex machina

Which almost doesn't work, but "heart of the cards ????? Yugi is the protagonist, whatever."

tooooo muuuuuuch

1:15 PM
@Pixie There is a virus on the lose! I will jack in thru the toilet Ethernet port!

@Derpy Yeah. Jonouchi's even like, "Don't you know what this does, Mai?!" like it make sense. Then Yugi tells him he won because what he was fighting for was more important, but... no. He won because Yugi gave him Time Wizard and ??????. xD

@Pixie you could at least have it like a "narrative enhanced polymerization card"
But there wasn't any monster fusion for that specific combo!

"I PLAY DEUS EX MACHINA! But that's not all... I'm playing this spell card, BS RATIONALIZATION!"

oh and end of episode 9 TROOOOOGDOOOOOORRR!!!

1:34 PM
@Pixie btw, I checked. The original japanese verison of the show did reverence the Punishment Game during the flashback to the Anzu gym blackmail incident.
That was what gave me the idea there was an actual remade episode for that.

They reference some of the events in Duel Monsters, but it's still a different continuity. They just throw in reanimated flashbacks when necessary.

ok, I really need to get to bed
I can't keep watching this and staying up even though I want to

Hehe. It'll be there tomorrow.

talk to you guys again sometime later

Seeya!

1:41 PM
yes it will

@Pixie Yes, that was an error on my part. I meant that I was driven into remembering the japanese new show to include the first seven volumes because of that edited out in dub flashback.
@trogdor Bye

Ohh, I see.

9 hours later…
11:07 PM
@Pixie this was pretty funny. that's the japanese visuals + 4kids audio track, right?

11:28 PM
seems like it
oh jeez the katamari damacy referance kills me
instead of the slightly more obvious Indiana Jones one
