oh well. I'm thinking of asking this on Server Fault:

or in other words, how can I set up an EC2 image in such a way that I don't just hand out a keypair to everyone that gives them access to ec2-user (which ~= root)
but I'm worried it'll be closed as primarily opinion-based. thoughts?
