12:10 AM
@MarkHenderson: Yeah, we tend to say handphone.

@mossy Hmm?

12:27 AM
@mossy I will have to google this
@mossy ]I do not understand it, nor have I seen it before now
@JourneymanGeek But what if you don't hold it in your hand?

@MarkHenderson: beats me. ;p
foot phone? Shoulder phone? Snatch phone?

:o
@MarkHenderson Not many things on the internet make me uncomfortable, but some of those 'comics'...
weird people out there man
That Nomiku is another story. I must have one!

12:44 AM
@mossy Plenty of things on te internet make me uncomfortable
I read an article the other day about the people that moderate the content on twitter/youtube/facebook
Some of the shit that they said they had seen...

Yeah...

12:56 AM
lol
@MarkHenderson: Actually that's one reason I haven't applied to the local police force for a job.

@JourneymanGeek I would have thought with a forensics degree there wouldn't be too many places you could apply for

@MarkHenderson: Well, its also information security management...
which has slightly broader scope.
And management, which... erm... who the fuck has a management degree Major? Oh, me.

@JourneymanGeek I do
I never really use it

lol
I'm slightly doubtful I would, either than knowing how management types think.
(Which in itself is slightly horrifying)

Bob
how the fuck do printer drivers work

1:03 AM
You expect them to work? ;p

Bob
well, after >24 hours of pain, I expect something other than error messages

I've heard some horror stories from people at my new job.
i guess with that many customers, some tend host some very.. bad stuff
unfortunately, we have to confirm before reporting to feds

@mossy Hopefully they have a small dedicated team to deal with those

@TheCleaner I wish it was warm enough to grill salmon here.. Fricking 40's today. Also, how do you do yours? I've found a Indonesian Peanut baking powder that's awesome, cedar plank, ~25 minutes on grill and ready to devour.
HP Printers + MS's Universal Driver for HP = It just works =]

1:19 AM
I've had awesome experiences with canon printers. Almost.
(Basically the driver page is a slight mess but if you can work out which is the right driver, its painless.)

I'm a big fan of the HP UPD. 400+ HP printers on the server can't be wrong.
We also have about 50 high-volume, multi-function Canon imageRunners in various models. They all share a single driver too, which is nice.

HP has some issues in the past, their UPD wouldn't install correctly from a print server, so you had to stick with the MS driver. The current driver has fixed those issues, but I'm still leery of it.
We have a Kyocera copier that prints too. I can 100% recommend against getting anything made by Kyocera. They break, they're finicky like a 90s-era printer, the drivers are a horrific mess, different drivers for every model. The only "nice" thing about those pieces of crap are the multiple 3000-sheet trays.

Now if I could just eliminate all the shared local printers, of which we have hundreds, I wouldn't "hate" printers.
@ChrisS Noted. Thanks.

Good god. Printing on Windows sounds like some horrible nightmare.

Some manufacturers have it figured out... Mainly HP and Canon. Others.... suck balls.

1:32 AM
Meh. Printing is not the worst thing I've done on Windows.

Also, some devices support PS fairly well... but I've never had a PS device that worked 100% of the time is PS mode.

@ewwhite Creeped out? What happened?

Am I the only one who wants "Cloud Management" as far away from my critical infrastructure as humanly possible? I have zero desire to use one of those Meraki switches.

@ChrisS But it's basically a chaos monkey for free! Who wouldn't want that..?

We're a Google Apps domain, so there's that. My director loves him some The Cloud but our network is vanilla Cisco and I don't see that part changing.

1:38 AM
Yeah... Didn't Cisco do this with a Linksys product a few years back? I seem to recall something terrible about that.

I still have that Meraki wireless AP they sent me. In its box.

How long until someone hack's Meraki central and disables every Meraki switch... Or mirrors your internal traffic to a server in Russia or China.... Can't imaging the NSA doesn't have their fingers in that already.

Fuck, nothing like locking yourself out of a switch by fucking the vlan settings on its uplink ports and pulling out the serial cable

@MarkHenderson I dunno, I ran packet-tracer on our datacenter ASAs and took all of our sites offline earlier :D

@ChrisS I meant to try to break into it and see if I could replace the firmware, but never found the time.

1:41 AM
I thought the NSA rubber stamped IOS releases.

@ShaneMadden oops?

@MarkHenderson Heh. Page fault in the SSH process as it sent me the output from the command, apparently. Crashed the ASA. I thought it was just a network blip that knocked my session offline, so I reconnected and ran it again (crashing the other ASA)

lol

@ShaneMadden Did you get a RL badge too?

@jscott Haha, not yet.

1:46 AM
@ShaneMadden guys here were all getting hard-ons for her.

@ewwhite That's awful :(

but at work, our boss was also harassing her

@ewwhite Oh, great.

@MarkHenderson Yeah pretty sure there is.
Just ordered a new case!
pretty good deal, i think.

@mossy Depends what you want to put in it. A standard ATX motherboard won't fit.

2:01 AM
@MichaelHampton bought a cheap micro lol

Fair enough

Cosair cases are nice to work on

Bob
2:19 AM
Ok. Giving up on the printer.

2 hours later…
4:15 AM
@ShaneMadden So I just made our ASAs failover by changing the VLAN on a monitored port
Not having a good day with taking things offline

@MarkHenderson Ouch

@ShaneMadden Thankfully nothing bad happened. Being a stateful failover and all

@MarkHenderson Yeah... nothing bad happened when I crashed the first ASA either ;)

Also, having a 3 second failover time on monitored ports means there's not enough time to change the other port before the failover kicks in

3 hours later…
7:17 AM
G'day

7:54 AM
morning

8:19 AM
@Wesley no way in hell.

8:49 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker That's quite restrained :)

8:00 to 14:00 UTC? Isn't that Tom's time?

@mossy That's exactly the PC case I have, LOVE it - really good looking case, could do with a couple of mm of extra space behind the motherboard sheet for cables but it's not a problem, just needs a bit of planning. You planning on watercooling?

@tombull89 carry on reading but the politically correct answer to that is No Comment I believe

@Chopper3 I gave my HTPC/bedroom machine a refresh on the weekend, took everything out, dusted, new thermal paste. I was intending to do proper cable management but when the modular PSU went in it all went to hell D:

9:04 AM
@Iain /me looks suspiciously at Iain
also, morning

@tombull89 You've just reminded me I need to clean mine out a bit too - was umming and arring about swapping my 780's for a single 980

@JennyD you have an axe don't you ?
But I don't think you're quite mad enough

and my bow!
@Chopper3 did my main gaming PC monday...my god I forgot how much of a pain my heatsink was to mount.

@Iain the one I used to have by my desk at work got stolen...

@tombull89 really? how so
@ewwhite - have a look at this - serverfault.com/q/640806/1435 - very amusing (if you're a HP nerd and like laughing at idiots - tick and tick btw :) )

9:16 AM
@Chopper3 We think that user is the new pseudonym for Sandra and equally we think they're sort of trolling

@Wesley I never post/comment on meta and I intend to keep it that way for my sanities sake

9:33 AM
@Chopper3 you really need three hands - one to hold the heatsink, one to hold the mounting bracket, and one to screw the heatsink into the bracket. This point in the video: youtube.com/…

@Iain ah, fair enough
@tombull89 the watercooler thing I had you screwed a bracket in from the back first then just attached the front piece in one go with come captive screws

9:50 AM
cool. Our incoming mail server (office 365) doesn't accept mails at the moment. "451 4.3.2 Server busy. Please try again later."
isn't that the whole point of the cloud? Don't worry about scaling, we do that for you!

10:02 AM
No, its so you can blame someone else ;p

10:48 AM
Linux: "Nice wheel you've got there. It'd be a shame if someone ... reinvented it."

11:38 AM
@freiheit Please. Not something I'm willing to do for free, and if I got paid, that would make it like the world's worst helldesk job, so I don't see me doing it then, either. Until SE does something to stem the tide of garbage, there's no point in cleaning it up piece by piece.

12:03 PM
Morning

12:13 PM
I quite frequently direct people to the man pages, usually that's the right place to go but I've been playing round with tc and it's man page it awful

writing Glassdoor reviews this morning :)

@ewwhite aw snap

who for ?

@Iain three of my old jobs

@ewwhite catharsis ?

12:19 PM
@Iain it's been a year since the last place... and I thought it was a good emotional distance to write something
that job drove me crazy... but I can look at it more objectively now

@ewwhite you have your way of doing things, they have their way, there is a gap that cannot be bridged

My coworkers were some of the most loyal and hardworking people I'd ever seen in an organization. This was true to a fault, in that most employees were not aware of their (tremendous) value on the open market. But *every employee in my group went above and beyond in their efforts to support the company and customer base.*

Loyalty's good, but not marching off a cliff is probably a better trait to have.

the counterpoint is that there was too much tribal knowledge... and poor development of this talent. They worked hard, but worked stupid...
so I'm writing the cons section now

@ewwhite unrelated I have access to an EL5 system if you want a test or two running with locate

12:24 PM
Oh, I have some too. The customer needs to give me real examples of what they're unable to do.

fair enough

@ewwhite You mean you can't fix it from being told it no workie? Some computer wizard you are.

because I look at cron and the timestamp on the mlocate.db
and it's consistent.

12:40 PM
@Chopper3 I'm just going to use the stock CPU fan. I think if I ever get to the point wher e I want to build something water cooled, I'll dish out more than $600 ;)
Im just building something to keep current. I play a lot of PC games and my current rig is about to burst into flames.

@mossy I had to have a year off ill and hadn't been near any IT for that time, when I came out of being ill (this was about last May or so) I decided to ease myself back by building a new gaming PC as I thought it was a kind of lowest-common-denominator - but wanted to make it hard - hence SLI/water-cooled/yet-in-a-smallish-enclosure
@mossy I say I play PC games, actually 99% of the time it's just BF4 :)

@Chopper3 Nice! I like the idea - really quiet and looks nice but I haven't really had the extra money until now. So maybe in the near future!

Well this doesn't bode well. The signals tech I need for some cabling's lync profile is "away for 8 hours". We have a change starting in 5 minutes...
@Chopper3 You should try some of the sid meier games :)

1:13 PM
@Chopper3 I cracked rank 110 recently, and hit the top 25 players (out of 40,000 total) on my regular server.

@ChrisS Cedar plank and some of this: williams-sonoma.com/products/potlatch-seasoning is all I use for salmon grilling. But I'm just a rookie when it comes to seafood...

Apparently I don't fail my diplomacy throws all that often. One of the people I've disliked the most here came and gave me a box of chocolates and said it'd been nice to work with me.

@tombull89 sweet - how are you doing on assignments - I just cannot get that bloody Gol Magnum

@JennyD Have someone else eat one first. :)

@Chopper3 I did the one to get the DAO-10 shotgun, apart from that I've not really been trying. I used the DAO-10 for a few rounds last night...shit's brutal. Not as bad as the MK3A1 from BF3 though. Using that in Metro was evil. Hilarious, and evil.

1:20 PM
@tombull89 I got the DAO master tag :)

I've like to get the UCAV, but I can't fly jets at all.

@tombull89 I'm on 320-kills on the CZ 3A1 too - which I have the airsoft version of

@TheCleaner Good thinking :-)

@tombull89 Oh I have that, and the cruise missile but not the airburst just yet, need another 15 UCAV kills

@Chopper3 Up to 7k with ACE 52 CQB, 1.1k with SRAW and something like 500 with the AWS which reminds me of the MG36 from BF3.

1:22 PM
@tombull89 jesus, you're a one-gun-man - most I'm on is about 700 on the M240B

@Chopper3 yeah, I've played with a few but I prefer the ACS 52 CQB. Saying that I picked up an AEK from someone I killed...damn, that fires quickly. the BF4 FAMAS isn't as good as the BF3 one too.

got to do my VCP5-DCV delta exam this week - not too onerous, just need to get it out of the way
@tombull89 yeah the AEK is a very strong gun

@Chopper3 favourite thing to do is counter-snipe snipers with SRAW...some of the rage is awesome.
ignoring the name, what do you guys thing of this?

@tombull89 Oh I've never seen such rage as when you take people out with the SUAV - proper hate

@Chopper3 a couple of times I've seen the red light coming towards me and led down at the last second - more often than not you survive (but it kills the person behind you).

1:28 PM
@tombull89 Oh I like that HP thing - presumably you can just move/hide the camera and use a normal keyboard as required? but yeah, that's the kind of innovation I expect out of apple tbh, might get a demo one in :)

@tombull89 my immediate thoughts? It's going to be buggy as hell, lagging, lack of apps etc..

@tombull89 yeah I only hit about every third time or so, it's not easy but cracking a sniper on the back of the head with zero warning is so much fun

@tombull89 Is that the HP Sprout? That looks really, really interesting, actually. Dunno if it'll be useful and functional, or something I'd get bored with and never use after the first month, but interesting idea for sure.

Bob
@pauska I've seen (and used) demos of those in the form of large tables before. They're actually pretty reliable.
Not sure how well this cheaper/smaller implementation will work though.
Also how useful it'll be. Once the novelty wears off...

1:32 PM
@ewwhite I thought that was common knowledge?

@Chopper3 I never thought of it.

@ewwhite I couldn't care less but I thought everyone knew

I didn't know, but also fall into the "couldn't care less" category, so.... FWIW.

It's all on the news here.
that, and some nurse with Ebola...

Here, @ewwhite - a question for your VMware talents. How do I VMware with ESX4 in JBOD?

HazarI have a failing drive on my ESXi 4 host and I'm going to replace it. There is no fault tolerance (RAID), each drive on its own. Can't wait until time warner fixes things...i'm downloading a game from Steam on off-peak at 6 MB/s

@HopelessN00b I would be fine with that. I hate having to carry this hard key

@NathanC Time Warner fixing things? Good luck with that. I mean, I have no complaints with them as my ISP, but they're not very responsive either. If I ever had a problem, I wouldn't expect it to be fixed for quite some time.

@HopelessN00b According to the tech the FCC will be on them if they don't fix it by the 21st of november

2:10 PM
Yeah, not sure who's worse there... government regulatory body or oligopolistic ISP. Either way, pretty sure I'd like to set both of them on fire.

This whole fairpoint strike is interesting (new england ISP)...the Maine plant is down the road from my work, so I can see the picket line lol

O? What's the story there?

2:30 PM
@HopelessN00b Basically, Fairpoint wants to cut benefits and make employees contribute to health insurance, among other things. Some $700m in cuts.
The union counter-offered, Fairpoint refused and declared an impasse to force the new contract on them anyway ...so they striked instead. :P

2:41 PM
Ahhh... wish I could get away with that.

@HopelessN00b If I could do that, I'd be a corporation too

3:08 PM
@ewwhite On who?

@MathiasR.Jessen I was thinking the striking thing, but sure, if I could get away with making $700 million more at the expense of ... some group of people ... I sure would.

Q: In AIX, how can I replace a newline with sed?

BasilI've got text with whitespace (including a newline) that I need to replace. I'd like to use sed, but AIX doesn't seem to support the answers to sed newline questions I find here. If I run a command that outputs text like: alias: aliasname 10:00:00:00:00:00:00:00 What's the be...

@HopelessN00b Be nice with epithets like "monster." She's someone's daughter!

@Wesley What's wrong with "monster?" I use that to describe little N00b all the time, and it's definitely a compliment.

I didn't even know there is a ARM version of Fedora. Damn cool

Why so dead in here?
is everyone on Slack now?

<shrug> Not me. That slack thing is doomed to failure, so... I'm still here. Just hating life, busy automating shit on our domain controllers, so nothing much to say.

Weee, I have to create 100 test users in AD.

What is the point of slack anyway

Distance from SE/SF and the painful, increasing levels of fail lately.

7:23 PM
i see.

But with no new blood, it won't survive long or work well, so I think we're stuck with the fail, either way. :(

@mossy Chat's the only thing that keeps a lot of us around, and it's also publicly searchable. We're experimenting with a IRC-like chat system. We're trying to hit a little bit of critical mass and thne publicize it perhaps.
I'd like to get 10, then 20 folks in. I think 30 would be critical mass.

Then ask Joel!

@DennisKaarsemaker it's like a web-based IRC-type chat.

@DennisKaarsemaker I was kidding :)
The mobile apps (at least for iPad/iPhone) are awesome, too.

so, how do I join that secret club?

@DennisKaarsemaker Wesley says it has something to do with facesitting.
Hmm, I guess there's no Star Wall on Slack.

7:32 PM
@ewwhite it better be good then... I don't like sitting on the cat's face.

@DennisKaarsemaker Need an email address to sign up... someone was collecting those a while back, but I don't remember who.

$firstname@$lastname.net works for me

Ah, looks like it was @Iain and/or @RyJones collecting those emails for Slack.

I feel sheepish asking this. I have a sister company that wants to provide their Windows users with remote desktop from home...where they remote into their individual workstations from their home/personal computers. Instead of VPN, and instead of opening port 3389...isn't there a tech that allows for this from MS already?

@TheCleaner Some of my clients just ask for ports to be opened for RDP...

7:37 PM
@TheCleaner Direct Access what you thinking of?

@ewwhite yeah, they had that but removed it due to what they call "hacking"...and I'd rather it be secure.

Hmmm, secure remote access... sounds like a VPN could do that.

@HopelessN00b sort of....that's what I was thinking originally, but typically that's for domain joined computers traveling. I was thinking more of something that allowed them to open up an RDP session "on the fly".
@HopelessN00b yeah, I can put in a true VPN, but my mind swears I'm forgetting something similar to Remote Web Services that MS has that allows for something like this.

@TheCleaner I don't think there's anything that'll do exactly that for client machines...unless you want to deploy one of those bloody remote access apps... but I fail to see the advantage of that over RDP.

@RyJones sent.

7:42 PM

@HopelessN00b @ewwhite I knew I was close just couldn't get the acronym right and Google wasn't helpful enough. Remote Desktop Web Access. technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731923.aspx

8:06 PM
@TheCleaner I don't think that's gonna let them log into their workstations, though... is it? When I looked into that, my understanding was you could only target servers for login with it.

"Additionally, RD Web Access includes Remote Desktop Web Connection, which enables users to connect remotely to the desktop of any computer where they have Remote Desktop access"

Of course, I also pushed out a GPP to all our domain controllers that opened a Powershell script, in notepad... and the script was all jacked up too... so, yeah, no surprise that I'm wrong about that too.

I've never deployed it so it'll be fun to attempt. I'd rather we be using an SSL VPN or similar but they don't want to spend any money.

Yeah, intimately acquainted with that. "It has to work perfectly, but we're not going to spend any money on it." Grrr.

@TheCleaner remote desktop gateway.
It basically acts as an application level proxy and for RDP. You can implement access policies and so on. It basically tunnel RDP over HTTPS.

8:20 PM
@Zoredache yeah, that's the "secure proxy server" but they still have to know what RDP session they want...I was thinking more like RD Web Access

@TheCleaner RD Web Access combined with an RDP Gateway is a good combination

@MarkHenderson yeah, that's what I'll be looking at
Something like that is what I was after...I just forgot the full name...kept thinking it was called remote web services and couldn't find it for some reason

@TheCleaner It's called RD Web Access
And now that OSX has a semi-decent RDP client it should even work there (you just have to import the .rdp file manually)

@MarkHenderson the new RDP client from Microsoft for OS X is really nice

@RyJones It has one super duper annoying feature: Starting every fucking new connection in full screen by default

8:27 PM
@MarkHenderson I'm not a fan of the session management, either, but it's better than what it replaced

@RyJones Oh shit yeah
The old one only worked half the time
There was another client that ewwhite suggested to me as well. I forget its name, but I could literally not get it to connect to a single session

Cord
but Cord crashes often

@ewwhite Thts the one
I couldn't get it to connect to anything

Has anyone ever configured an application to read for a mysql slave? I'm reading an article on it and it just seems like a bad idea... What if the slave is not synced with the master

I think it depends on the nature of data your application is querying from slave

yeah i guess

some data could be distributed to slaves to ease load on master
some data required to be real time synchronized means only from master

9:11 PM
sure, we do that a lot. It also depends on the kind of information you have in the DB
in some cases a delay is acceptable

> he then committed suicide by throwing himself in front of an LIRR train.
So rude

@MarkHenderson yeah... really close to @voretaq7's house :)

Probably delayed hundreds of people on their way to work and scarred the driver for years
