12:00 AM
@freiheit Yeah, but RAID sucks. That's why all my data is in the cloud. Hmmm. Wait a minute.

@HopelessN00b Since we've established that the cloud also sucks, have you considered storing your data in multiple clouds?

@HopelessN00b Get two cloud servers. Install NAS on both of them. Expose iSCSI. Connect iSCSI to your local machine. RAID 1 both extents.

I think some RAIC6 storage wouldn't be too hard...

Voila! Fault tolerant cloud storage. Go ahead and implement it in production by this afternoon.

@MarkHenderson I think on Linux I could just use a loopback mount instead of all that crazy iSCSI...

12:03 AM
/me runs around doing git merges

12:37 AM
I'm fairly sure virtualbox hates me...refusing to start my windows 10 vm :(

VirtualBox? People still use that?

trying Virtual PC...
Well, all it does is hang...and I can't kill the processes >.>

@MichaelHampton I use it to spin stuff up at home

Dear gawd. I left VirtualBox behind years ago.

I have a parallels license for the previous version, but I stopped running windows in a VM so I didn't keep up with the upgrade offers

12:39 AM
well, with Windows you don't have a lot of free options...

@NathanC Client Hyper-V? VMware Player?

@MichaelHampton Player can't create VMs, though can it?
Client Hyper-V is a Windows 8 thing I thought :p

it has been able to for quite a while iirc
client hyper v sucks on a laptop

@NathanC It can for several versions now.

@NathanC Does anyone know when Windows 10 is timebombed at?

12:42 AM
Planning to put the Windows 10 preview in production?

@MarkHenderson The dates were on the download page. Enterprise didn't list a date.

@MarkHenderson Not that I'm aware of

@jscott That'll be why i didn't see one then

meh, need to reboot for Virtual PC to work ...brb.

Mine is still downloading and the fucking stupid ass downloader they make you use gives you almost no feedback about its progress
speed, eta, etc

12:43 AM
@MarkHenderson I downloaded the ISO directly

you're downloading the exe?

Fuck that stupid ass downloader. I didn't use it.

@MichaelHampton You can not use it?
Shit

@MarkHenderson Yes, and if you don't, it will complain a lot, but eventually give you a direct link to an ISO

Well shit
I already installed the thing so it's too late for me
I will just sit here and wait

12:45 AM
It's not like I could use it anyway.

Yeah, that's it

@jscott Thankyou very much
Except.. download fialed :(
I'm guessing that's your specific URL

Funny, it's exactly the same link I got.

Oh dear.. Are you logged in to MS Live or whatever they call it?

12:46 AM
Hmm
Maybe Microsoft just doesn't like me
4
@jscott Yeah I am
I will just wait

Ok...Virtual PC won't let me assign more than 3 GB to a VM
....er...

@NathanC Virtual PC?!?
Damn. Go back to VirtualBox. :)

@MichaelHampton Yeah you know...the one that came before Client Hyper-V?

3GB ought to be enough for anybody. etc

@MichaelHampton Well, the zombie processes virtualbox gave me prevented a normal reboot :/

12:59 AM
@NathanC Yeah I know. Though I've never actually used it...

Fuck.
Virtual PC isn't 64 bit
wtf?!

Yeah, it's ancient stuff.

@Wesley - our wet dream. CP/M source code! computerhistory.org/_static/atchm/…

sigh...

@MarkHenderson your dreams and mine are highly divergent

1:01 AM
All I wanna do is run Windows X 10!

@RyJones Wesley and I have a shared bond over CP/M
> We also have machine-readable source code for most of the files. We suspect they have been retyped from the listing,

@MarkHenderson SPLOODGE

@Wesley shudders in delight
Actually I can't even read this source code
I'm not smart enough

1:27 AM
the close queue limit. hmph.
can I be elected moderator?

@FalconMomot Yes

awesome.

You have passed the secret instant-moderator-election test

/mode #TheCommsRoom +o @FalconMomot

1:30 AM
<3

It didn't work :(
I'll file a bug on meta.se

we should probably have a moderator election at some point

I think the previous ones were triggered by a meta.sf thread requesting community input for one

1:55 AM
@NathanC Runs well in VMWare Fusion
Took literally around 5 minutes to install

2:18 AM
@MarkHenderson oh dear
@FalconMomot I'm live from Metrix.

@Jacob neat

@MarkHenderson Meh, I gave up for the night, lol

2:35 AM
Now that I'm here (windows 10) I don't really know what to do with it lol
Chrome works
Chat works
That's about all I do

@MarkHenderson I was considering upgrading my work VM to it.
however
I think that might be a bad idea

@Jacob I don't think it's a wise idea to do anything production-like on it
If only for the fact that at some date in the future, it will explode and you'll have to redo everything

@MarkHenderson Just the VM that I use to RDP and check mail on

I don't use VM for RDPing any more. The Microsoft Remote Desktop client for OSX is much improved since they bought iTap
(but it is worse than the original iTap client)

@MarkHenderson I use Fedora as my base OS

2:39 AM
@Jacob Well you suck then

@MarkHenderson Boss said specifically buy a Lenovo. :(
Otherwise
MBAir all day

@Jacob You must be devastated
Having to buy a brand new laptop :(
I don't even own a laptop any more. It's either desktop or iPad

@MarkHenderson Naw, I'm indifferent to running OSX or a linux distro
the only issue is I have to work on windows
(requiring Windows or OSX)

2:57 AM
@FalconMomot I think someone just complained about you telling them about how easy it is to run a mail server.

finally installing under vmware player...
Also, who the fuck showers at 11pm at night?! I just want to go to bed but I have to pee :(
#apartmentproblems

@NathanC um? Roommate?

@Jacob 5 including my girlfriend, actually.

@NathanC My wife when she gets home from work at the hospital as a registered nurse
After a day of cleaning up poop its best to have a shower!

@Jacob lol, where?

3:03 AM
@NathanC dude you should fix that
@FalconMomot Metrix
do you want me to ask

@Jacob I wish I could

haha, someone is talking about me there?

Can't afford to yet

@FalconMomot I think
briefly
That first statement is all they said that I heard

well if they think it's super hard, they should know it's super easy
they must be craSH or something
they're most likely in neg9, so if you wanted to join neg9 for some reason they might be a good person to talk to.

3:05 AM
@FalconMomot black hair, eyes and 5 o'clock shadow.

oh god, they have eyes?

@FalconMomot I meant to imply dark eyes

anyway, no not crash. hex maybe? I've never seen hex at metrix though.
do I know anyone at all with black eyes? I don't think so, not unless I punched them in the face for not knowing how to run a mailserver.

sorry

hex would also have a giant septum piercing
no, I can't tell who that might be.

3:07 AM
no piercing.

running a mail server isn't rocket science.
(doing it well is trickier, but there's great documentation online for that)
hm. I need to prune my cd installer folder
@NathanC: 32 bit or 64 bit windows 10?
I think I got 64 bit not to instafail by enabling uefi
Now its just sitting on the loading screen ;p
hm. using windows 8.1 as the vm type seems to work

3:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek Microsoft should really just drop 32-bit Windows of all flavours
I am sure there's a reason why they won't though

@MarkHenderson MICROSOFT. WAT R U DOING. MICROSOFT. STAHP.

@MarkHenderson; vms, and 'netbooks'
which seem to be making a comback
hm. tfa for system accounts? interesting

4:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek atom processors are AMD64 capable
likely it's to give people an upgrade path from XP?
no idea if a direct path is supported from XP to 10 though.

@Wesley Hows ur ebola?

@MarkHenderson My dick fell off. =(

Hey I heard you like Ebola so I put some Ebola in your Ebola so you can Ebola while you Ebola!

That better be King Missile
Yay!

Damn straight

4:14 AM
@FalconMomot yeach but a lot of systems have like 1 or 2 GB ram, non upgradable on the super low end

@JourneymanGeek which in no way precludes you from using a 64-bit OS.

@FalconMomot 1GB of RAM on a 64 bit system. Talk about a hot dog down a hallway.

@JourneymanGeek When was the last time you needed a 32-bit VM?
I remmeber the first generation 64-bit Xeons didn't have some long word instruction that meant you could run a 64-bit hypervisor but only 32-bit guests
But apart from that, all my VMs are 64-bit

@MarkHenderson I've been doing the stand-up desk thing lately. You should try it.

@Wesley WE'RE FINALLY GETTING SOME

4:18 AM
@MarkHenderson Oh sweet!

I have a $700/desk budget and I need to find 5 of them

I just put a throw rug on my bureau and stand in front of it. =P

I've been asking for years and years for a standup desk, but to no avail

Then when I shit myself over how unpatched this Exchange server is I just have to reach down a few inches to pull a new pair of undies out.

This new woman starts and bats her eyelids and asks nicely for a standup desk and my boss is all "Wow great idea! Let's all get them!"

4:20 AM
@MarkHenderson actually until I built my current PC, most of the time

@JourneymanGeek Then you can still run windows 7/8/8.1

5:20 AM
It looks like Dell are taking after Cisco and discontinuing their good, cheap product and forcing you onto their way more expensive offerings
I don't seem to be able to get 5500-series switches any more, they want me to buy N2000 series which are 3x the price

5:31 AM
good morning partypeople
@MarkHenderson that's how the world works
@Wesley why haven't you updated them yet? TO BED!

@MichelZ I'm still working on it. Did some updates tonight. I check each one for potential problems. Found three I'll wait on for a bit to inspect for just how much damage they could do

@Wesley the problem is probably solved by the next patch :D

@MichelZ That you can't install because the first one BSOD'd your boxxen.

5:46 AM
@Wesley BSOD from non-kernel-level software? Haven't seen that in a while
@MichaelHampton have you got the 13th gen servers yet?

@MichelZ I'm still waiting on budget approval for ours. Hence my current bitching about switch costs, because the more I have to spend on switches the less I get for the server

@MarkHenderson :( ordered ours this week
still need to find compatible drive caddies :D

I'm also thinking about saving a few bucks on firewalls, given that Cisco will not sell me 5505's and want $5,500 for a 5512-X I'll just buy some 5520's on eBay for $1000/each
I was hoping @ewwhite would be in today so I could ask him how much of a bad idea he thinks it is, but I'm guessing he is sleeping after his marathon day yesterday

@MarkHenderson Counting money, more like it. :P

6:08 AM
@MichelZ are you ready to get reckless? motivated by the boys from fifth ward Texas?
@Wesley hiring people to count his money

@Wesley He's counting his fat stacks while I'm trying to figure out how to scrimp on enough other expenditure so I can afford a new database server :P
One day someone will come to me and go "Here Mark. You've proven yourself. Here's a $300,000 budget and a list of requirements. Go."

@MarkHenderson I wouldn't know how to do my job without constant second guessing

I want to registed ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶.com

@Wesley go for it

Also, @DennisKaarsemaker
@RyJones Or maybe ಠ_ಠ.com

6:16 AM
@Wesley how would you find your bike in that?

Which would apparently me xn--_-ncfb.com
@RyJones I'd paint mine pink and put tassels on it.

@Wesley nice

@Wesley that's not too far off from what the dutch do

Shit, someone already has ಠ-ಠ.com
https://ಠ-ಠ.com
Markdown.
Night, my dippin' dots.

@Wesley Most TLDs have heavy IDN restrictions
Otherwise you could use unicode-looking representations of english numbers and arabic numerals

6:35 AM
@RyJones what?
@MarkHenderson shouldn't the budged depend on the requirements?
@RyJones that's easy... he hasn't one

6:52 AM
morning

@MichelZ Geto Boyz are fifth ward rappers

@Wesley ಠ-ಠ.wtf appears to be still free

G'day
must stay away from the front page - the fail it hurts

7:18 AM
@RyanRies Time to go If($Host.Name -EQ 'ConsoleHost' -or $PSVersionTable.PSVersion.Major -ge 5){Start-Transcript} ;)

7:43 AM
put it in a module!
:)

Windows Server Technical Preview is out: technet.microsoft.com/library/dn765472.aspx

8:15 AM
@pauska Check this: withinrafael.com/…
About time :D

@pauska really quite impressed here with Win 10 preview. Just deployed it via our current SCCM environment with no issues.

@MathiasR.Jessen shit - genuinely useful improvement in windows - I'm in shock

I'm actually really impressed with what I have seen so far

8:31 AM
@RobM that's because it's "early"... they will find ways to break it :)
@RobM you are? why?

@MichelZ you're right

I haven't seen anything really impressive yet
I mean the handling of start menu + metro should have been in 8 from the beginning
the multi-desktop is... meh
what else is there?

It's everything Windows 8 should have been. You're right, there's no big stand-out "OMG" feature, but the whole package does feel well put together and full of lots of little improvements considering how early it is

@RobM yes, this is true. but nothing "mind-blowing"

but then I don't know that you need "mind blowing"

8:33 AM
I still look forward to it of course

8:47 AM
@MichelZ It's been meh since forever in Solaris/Linux

Q: squirrelmail not receiving mail

kksmy SquirrelMail can send but not able to receive emails. Imap server is Cyrus. Can anyone please help me to get it working? What details should i provide? postconf -n alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases command_directory = /usr/sbin config_directory = /etc/postfi...

what details should he provide.. LOGS ffs

@Iain yeah, we had that discussion already. good for a 800x600 laptop, but not for my 6x 22" screen desktop.

@Chopper3 Yeah, I was quite surprised as well :D

but there are still people out there who seem to want it

@MichelZ as long as you actually use only 1 video card this was working pretty ok with 3 screens, multiple cards = multiple X for all i know, if you can proove me wrong i love to give it a try again.

8:56 AM
@MichelZ: Actually, I kinda like the ability to peek at my virtual desktops
And, meh, mindblowing is overrated. The best windows versions have tended to be incremental fixes on fubared attempts at mindblowing.
win2k was me's desktop and an NT core (and was awesome). XP built on that. Vista was a failed attempt at mindblowing, and 7 fixed that. 8 was... You get the idea ;p

@JourneymanGeek Judging from the preview, they seem to have a fair chance at breaking the cycle this time
* crossing fingers *

@MathiasR.Jesse; oh, I suspect 10 will be the next xp ;p

9:12 AM
wow - genuinely interesting question by new user shock! not 100% sure I've answered this as well as I could but it did make me think - serverfault.com/q/632993/1435

@Chopper3 Agreed

@MichelZ Talking of displays I finally got rid of my 2 x apple 30' ones I've had for YEARS - now down to just my 15" laptop display and one 24" external
@JennyD quite a rare thing eh?

@Chopper3 I like that kind of question, though it's a bit close to "opinion based" maybe.

@JennyD there is an opinion aspect to it yes but it only has two options - the traditional one and the alternative he's discussing - I've been doing vmware stuff for years now and I'd never thought of that alternative, not once, so good for him for challenging my defaults

@Chopper3 yeah, I didn't VTC it - there may be some actual arguments against doing it his way though I can't think of any technical ones just now

9:21 AM
@JennyD no, it's odd that I get to rethink assumptions, I'm enjoying the process of thinking around his idea

@Chopper3 yep
I think most people just continue on the way they did it before, when what they had was a physical disk...

yes, and it makes sense in many ways to do so but it's nice to stop every so often and reconsider - we're in the process of massively reducing the number of vCenter servers we have across the business and removing all the vCenter HeartBeat and Linked-Mode implementations - they're just not needed any more

That's the kind of question SF should be attracting all the time rather than all of the shitty 'I can't be arsed to read the documentation for $technology, do it for me'' stuff ew get every day.

@DennisNolte what? I have 1 card with 6 mini-DP
@Chopper3 but but... why?!
@Chopper3 you had many vcenter servers? what for?

9:38 AM
@MichelZ well they used to be able to support less hosts, we have 16,500 hosts across the business, but recent versions can handle more hosts realistically and we had essentially one vC per 'product line' or sub-business. The changes to SSO allow us to more easily have less-but-bigger-vC's. We're going from about 375 of them down to about 120

@Chopper3 hosts as in physical hosts?
impressive

@MichelZ yeah, but that includes dev, test, reference and production

still impressive :)
I have - 3
:D
what hardware are you running on?
one of the big names? supermicro? something completely different?

@MarkHenderson What's up?

@MichelZ 95% are HP BL460c's - from G6-to-Gen8's - we have a few Gen9's in test but nowhere near production yet - the 5% are pairs of DL380's that we use where we don't have say the power/cooling budget for a full blade-enclosure

9:44 AM
nice

@RobM I agree.. we don't need any new mind blowing features, we just need shit to work. Like Vista -> Win7 (they're nearly identical under the hood)
@Chopper3 the new ARM stuff from HP is pretty interesting.. do you guys do alot of video encoding/transcoding?

@Chopper3 Hmmm

@pauska yeah, we use the HP SL range with their tesla CUDA cards for that
@ewwhite what?

10:03 AM
@Chopper3 you seem surprised by that OP's question re: partitioning

@MichelZ how do you have negative 3 hosts? o0

@ewwhite Yeah, [main client] is very 'on rails' about some things and we've always been a 1:1 VM:vdisk kind of place, certainly I'd never considered adding extra vdisks for regular linux partitions, we add them for application specific reasons of course
@JourneymanGeek They're AMD-based :)

@Chopper3: ;p

10:21 AM
o.0 why in the world is my storage server transfering at 2MB/s -.- the disk is connected with USB 2 and its transfering on a gigabit connection

@Chopper3 wat

exactly

10:47 AM
@Chopper3 Answering, with a bit of a history lesson.

@ewwhite nice answer, think I upped it iirc
@ewwhite odd comment you got

heh...
not sure what that means

no, me neither

I'll refine it, though... stream of consciousness.

@ewwhite be flying over you later this month, I'll give you a wave :)

11:01 AM
mmmhmm

which ironically tries to advertise for anti-fraud training

11:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek that was meant as a pause
@Chopper3 god thanks they're not

Tried using a 15'' screen as a TV... cant see a thing\

@Nick what res? 15" was pretty standard for monitors back in the day. And I find a 10" screen tolerable for movie watching

@JourneymanGeek its a square screen and most movies are widescreen ... so half of the space is wasted

Oh... THAT sucks

11:23 AM
im looking for a cheap pretty big screen to replace that one just so I can watch movies easily

if you want small and decent, I have a suggestion ;p

@JourneymanGeek sure...

10 inch? -.-

its a bit messy, and you need to add a power supply and stand, but its cheap, and not too bad
oops
NEARLY typed in my admin password here

11:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek was thinking more something like this: e-shop.gr/… (greek site)

Thats a good option too ;p
I was considering one of those 27 inch ips screens everyone was raving about, but meh. PAF

@JourneymanGeek I have 2 25'' IPS for my desktop no problems so far

I just found out that someone excluded *i386* from our repo sync scripts because we only run 64bit servers. What the..?

@faker 0_0
Has someone never heard of dual arch?

@JourneymanGeek this is really stupid and dangerous. I'd love to punch the guy who set it up, but he left the company

@faker: You shouldn't let that stop you.

@JourneymanGeek he is a consultant and also moved away -- not worth the effort :D

Could you just slip him into a no fly list or three?
(also, depending on the distro, shouldn't it be i586/i686?)

12:30 PM
@JourneymanGeek Nowadays i386 is almost interchangable with 586/686
Except when dealing with ancient hardware, obviously

judging by the amount of RPMs I get synced now, I'd say i386 was correct
CentOS 5 & 6 repos

Huh, that's weird...Synology skipped Update 6
They released a patch for the bash exploits...

12:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek depending when this was done there was a time where multiarch was very dangerous to do.

@NathanC talking linux the kernel dropped support for actual 386 hardware a few month/years ago afaik.

@DennisNolte Ah.

3.8 kernel :)
so no bleeding edge for Pentium 1 anymore :(

Is it just me or does the metro UI in general just seem childish?

1:13 PM
@Travis welcome to 2012 :)

@Travis Well, yes, but then again so did the Windows XP UI.

Yeah but I prefer the Win 7 UI much better than XP and 8/X

8.1 is fine as you can boot to desktop

10 goes back to desktop without the 8 tiles
Still looks too tablety for me.

@ewwhite yeah, I can see why

At least he isn't crying on meta

I answer all of his questions
or something like that
I should introduce him to TomTom
