Dammit, why haven't they introduced the "questioner is a fuckwit" close reason yet?

@womble Filed under feature requests. Someone will bring it up at the next meeting. I think I'm bringing chips.
I want to load balance. And store it all on one harddrive. Advices? This is for the next Facebook killer, btw. And I want to be DDoS proof. Please show your work when answering.

@Holocryptic Get a job in marketing.

@Holocryptic O.o

One word: "Cloud"
Now scurry forth young ones, and may the Internet be a warm and loving mistress to you.

12:51 AM
@Holocryptic zfs with copies=2
sorta

hm?
I'm not familiar with zfs

you're load balancing different areas of the disk platter, potentially, even if slower, and zfs is scalable so it's great for the next facebook killer, and anything running on Solaris must be DDoS proof
who needs reality to get in the way of 'facts' like that

haha

@TessellatingHeckler Watch out, the snark police will come get you.

how have you spent-time-on-the-internet and not been hit by zfs hype?

12:54 AM
@TessellatingHeckler I spend a lot of time with my fingers in my ears and my eyes closed going "lalalalalalalalalala". It helps with the "cloud" too.
@womble so what's up with that? I've been away for a few days. Did I miss something?

@Holocryptic Just a long, overly sensitive question on MSF, and some lovely ad hominem from Kyle.

@womble That's a lot of reading. I feel like I need to make some popcorn.

@Holocryptic Probably wise

I find it best to just play violent video games

@Zypher corrupting the childrens!!

1:09 AM
oh god no .. HOW COULD I NOT THINK OF THE DAMN CHILDREN (snark, snark)

@Zypher hrm. Need to do more of that myself. Although with the new found manpower shortage at work, I won't have much time of anything for a bit. le sigh

@Zypher We need a flag for "SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN"

hahah
@Holocryptic yea, i actually have been on a platformer kick recently
hence the 5 hours of sleep last night and me being pretty much a waste of life today
@ShaneMadden although i'm sure people would have problems with it ...

I got home last night at 1130, after over 10 hrs on the road. I'm hurting right now. And I have to open the shop tomorrow morning. And for the next forseeable future...

have you considered ... sleep?

1:13 AM
Huh? Oh, you mean that thing I do instead of work?

yeah, that thing

@Holocryptic You mean "picking up slack"?

@ShaneMadden Oh, THAT!
Wouldn't be the first time I'm sleep deprived. I'll make it through the week, and then we'll see what happens after that.
At least my boss waited till I got back in town before firing the other guy :)
Thanks IE9 for completely ruining the download experience

@Holocryptic So, good news. They (eventually) called that game. With any luck they'll reschedule at a time we can go back up.

@ScottPack Nice! Yeah, that was some nasty weather.

1:29 AM
@Holocryptic Pretty much. Apparently, Cleveland got like 3.25" of rain or some such.
Man, can you imagine those idiots who decided to drive in that shit?

@ScottPack I kid you not, within maybe a 20 mile stretch I saw 3 spinouts
@ScottPack /raises hand. That was me (didn't really have a choice though)

/me drove home this morning

haha
I had storms basically the whole way home. Worst bit was on the backend of the drive in MD
lightning and downed trees and stuff
Total pain in the ass

Ugh. I wrote a whole long answer to that mod_rewrite question, walking through the rules, not remembering that QUERY_STRING isn't included for matching.

1:53 AM
Ouch

Much shorter one up now, lol.

Too harsh?

A: Using "at" to call a delayed process from within a cgi script

MikeyBSpecify the full path to at in the script. Oh, and use ERROR CHECKING. Why don't you check the result code of the system command? Or at itself? Programs and calls return errors FOR A REASON. It's because they had ERRORS.

As much as it's good to stretch my regex muscle, those are kinda gray area. I have a hard time thinking they belong at webmasters but they land over there sometimes.. Maybe that's just because the webmasters that I've known have been pretty hopeless at that kind of thing.

@ShaneMadden One of these days I'll get my sysadmin daddy pants on and be actually competent. One day...

@MikeyB I'd say bold instead of caps ;)
@Holocryptic Meh, regex. Only reason I've got it down is my bad old days writing world of warcraft mods, lol.

2:02 AM
@ShaneMadden yeah, less caps. Maybe links to docs that support your beating. But other than that, fine I think

Docs that support error checking? Should I just link to SO?

haha

I changed it a bit…

Well, maybe how to enable error checking or something. Keep in mind that I know nothing about cgi

It's just perl.

2:03 AM
@ShaneMadden Nice. I'm trying to find time to get back into that
@MikeyB Keep in mind that I know nothing about perl

I also noticed he uses a relative path for his "it ran" check file. Which means it probably failed to get written to /
@Holocryptic perl, C, python, whatever. If you don't check return codes, you'll have no idea when things fail.

@Holocryptic Haha, I quit years ago (burning crusade), reactivating for a month for the more recent expansions each. But, with a quick guilty glance at curse, my swan song addon is still being maintained by the community and is nearing 5 million downloads.. so that's cool.

@MikeyB There is truth in that
@ShaneMadden Neat. I've been to the last two Blizzcons. Couldn't get tickets for this year, but my buddy and I are gonna watch it on DirecTV

@MikeyB who wants to know if things fail? that's such a downer

@Holocryptic Hardcore ;). Should be fun - I'm still a pretty bad blizzard fanboy on the starcraft and diablo fronts.

2:10 AM
@ShaneMadden The cons are sooo much fun. I have bragging rights to being among the first in the world to be able to play the monk class for Diablo 3, as well as the new races for Cataclysm. Just awesome times, really.
And the the other cool thing about Blizzcon? No jerks. At least as far as I could see. Everyone was laid back and polite and having a good time.

@Holocryptic Haha, nice. You always hear that about gamers - great people in person and at cons, etc.; absolutely the opposite on the internet.
@Holocryptic In other words: penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19

absolutely
heh. Green blackboards. It's been a while since I pondered that oxymoron
MidnightDBA is on a roll on Twitter

@Holocryptic I always knew them as "chalkboards", so that never threw me off ;)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Bacon #replacemovienameswithbacon
@ShaneMadden Yeah. I don't really remember when it went from chalkboard to whiteboard

@Holocryptic Holy crap, that's a lot of bacon. My stream is way too full already, lol (currently about 24 hours behind)

2:17 AM
haha
@WesleyDavid has corrupted me by getting me started on Twitter. I curse his name daily

how did you retweet into chat?

@TessellatingHeckler Just paste a tweet's status link, I believe (from clicking the timestamp)

@TessellatingHeckler take the indiviual twit URL and paste it
@ShaneMadden yep

@Holocryptic Wait wut? You call blackboards whiteboards now?

@MikeyB Now that they're all dry erase, yeah.

2:19 AM
also, "Raiders of the Lost Bacon"
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Bacon

@ShaneMadden Oh, fair enough.

@TessellatingHeckler Nouns are too easy ;)

@MikeyB I call it "That rewriteable thing you draw on". I'd make students clap the dry erase erasers just for the hell of it.

@ShaneMadden Once Bacon A Time In America?

2:21 AM
@ShaneMadden Bacon.
One-word movies are kind of boring too.
Charlotte's Bacon

The Barbaric Beast of Bacon Creek, Part 2. ( imdb.com/chart/bottom )

Shake That Teenage Bacon 4: Babysitter's Delight

Is there a keyboard shortcut for dismissing the notification about @ replies, or do I need to keep clicking this green bubble every time?

@ShaneMadden we can send you 36^3 messages so you can trial and error find one

lol

2:23 AM
Heh. All the tooltip says is, "You have been mentioned. Click to show." Unhelpful.

the shortcut is to go to the main site, view it in the notification bar, and come back to chat and refresh

@Holocryptic Ooh, I like it. Efficient!

I aim to please
When you lurk like I do, you learn all sorts of dirty secrets.. I mean little tricks

knowledge is power, and lurking is a great way to knowledge
didn't Jesus say "The Lurk will inherit the Earth"?

Close enough

2:28 AM
he was foreign, he probably had a strong accent, so people misheard it as "meek"
y'know, uh, after it was translated to English

I lurk because I'm incompetent and want to passively increase my street cred.
@TessellatingHeckler It was the beard. Without proper grooming tools, he ended up with a lot of hair in his mouth. Made for lots of mumbling.

that's like lurking at a concert to learn how to play the trombone?
ahh

@TessellatingHeckler That's funny because I used to play the trombone. So yes

@Holocryptic Street cred's pretty important

@ShaneMadden No cred, no snark. Or something
I really fake it pretty well though, I think.

2:31 AM
Wait a tick. netbios name resolution will resolve an IPv6 address? Seriously?
This is like Microsoft continuing to support IE6 and simultaneously whining about how it's not going away.

fake it's good enough for a lot of things

@ShaneMadden Why can't that just die?

@Holocryptic Oh, it can. (not sure if it actually supports v6, but this implies: serverfault.com/questions/301469/… )

how does it resolve an IP address anyway?
netbios, that is, not dns

@TessellatingHeckler I'm dangerous because I know just enough to know I'm in the general area of right. And I know where to get to the rest of the rightness

2:33 AM
is it a broadcast?

@TessellatingHeckler broadcast UDP packets that other netbios nodes will answer with their name or names they know

@TessellatingHeckler Not the word I'd use ;). If MS wants to keep a decentralized name resolution protocol around, why not switch to mDNS?

!g mDNS
oh not-irc why aren't you more like irc?

@TessellatingHeckler heh, need some answer bots in here

2:35 AM
it's 3:35 am. I'm watching a script run on public folders.
I want to be asleep
I haven't written the next script that I need when this one finishes, assuming this one works

@TessellatingHeckler UK?

and I haven't matched the 500 row dataset that I need to be matched before I can use the next script I haven't writte
n
yeah, UK

@TessellatingHeckler What a coincidence, public folders - another technology that Microsoft tries to kill with one hand and actively supports with the other.

Public folders are a scourge on my ass

indeed. what's their replacement for public folders?
surely not sharepoint?

2:37 AM
probably

@TessellatingHeckler shared mailboxes / resource mailboxes. And, unfortunately, sharepoint. shudder

ooo, I have an idea for that IPv4 guy. It's probably wrong though. And I have to figure out how to say it.

which ipv4 guy?

Moving some departments over to resource mailboxes from public folder calendars for conference room scheduling was about the worst exchange related experience that I've had - they couldn't understand to send it an appointment instead of creating one directly. Second only to accidentally killing outbound mail flow for like 6 hours one night.

Q: Stubborn APIPA Issue (possible IPv4 problem, IPv6 = okay?)

Joe M.I have one Windows 7 desktop that seems to be stuck on an APIPA address. It can see the other computers in the workgroup, but seemingly only communicate via IPv6 (see below), and can't access outside the LAN. The problem began today after completing a Windows update. Troubleshooting so far has al...

you seem to start talking about questions and all magically know which question you're talking about, without linking to them

telepathy

I voted to move that one to SU, heh. What's your thought @Holocryptic? I was thinking DHCP issue or blown up NIC driver.

Possibly the installed protocols on the NIC got blown out
If I even worded that right

if manually assigning an IP hasn't helped, can it be a dhcp issue?

@TessellatingHeckler Ahh, didn't see that part. Don't mind me.
@Holocryptic Sounds reasonable - though I'm not sure off the top of my head if 169.254/16 lights up if IPv4 is disabled.

2:45 AM
point
Maybe his hostfile is hosed

event logs might have something

a likely story

@TessellatingHeckler Windows Event Logs: A Fool's Final Hope?

@ShaneMadden A Fools First Place To Look, If He's Not A Fool

Windows XP? Event logs a huge list. Windows 7? All it needed was fast, realtime search/filter of the list. Instead, it got GUI bloat big enough to cast a shadow the other side of Lake Michigan, and split into a dozen extra logs

2:55 AM
Always look at the event logs, in my experience. The times I don't, I've regretted it
haha

what a design decision... we'll log messages, but if you take the program DLLs away you can't read the messages anymore

@Holocryptic But, so much noise.. at least on some systems, heh. My only solace is piping them to splunk.

anyway, 4am, and the "easy" script has taken 3.5 hrs. Now for the "hard" script
is splunk good?

@TessellatingHeckler Oof, good luck.

2:57 AM
@TessellatingHeckler Yeah, it's amazing.

also, when I post, the (1) notification vanishes

@TessellatingHeckler I keep hearing stories of how it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and three-ways. Never used it myself.

good. I started installing it months ago, but never finished

@Holocryptic Fire up a free instance and mess with it

one day. Got too much else to do first.
next week, replace our internal helpdesk software with $new helpdesk software
that's going to be a faff

2:59 AM
@TessellatingHeckler Such as glorious battle with public folders!

@ShaneMadden the whole story of the public folders is horrifying

@TessellatingHeckler Haha, yeah?

I can only get by with not dwelling on it

@ShaneMadden I'll have to add it to the list of things to do.

3:05 AM
Bloody XP installs. So aggravating.

@Holocryptic Just 3 more years! sigh

Contemplating taking up cutting

@Holocryptic Good plan

All my plans are good

3:26 AM
Classic windows dsquery: -limit 0
New windows powershell: -ResultSize Unlimited

@TessellatingHeckler Powershell makes me twitch. It's better than vbscript, but only just. As soon as you break past simple pipeables, it's a mess.

wow, editing in chat!

@TessellatingHeckler Is it really unlimited? Or unlimited like tmobile defines unlimited?

I don't think it's subject to fair use policy

@TessellatingHeckler Yeah, hit the up arrow to edit your last. And now you're ruined, because you'll approach all chat type things expecting to be able to edit, and being horribly dissapointed.

3:29 AM
but it's bound to be subject to ram/virtual memory/disk use and universal heat death

@TessellatingHeckler I've done that by accident, not sure how to repro

@ShaneMadden mess? it's no Python, that's for sure
but at least it has foreach ($x in $xs) {} instead of some horrible counting bodge

@TessellatingHeckler Yeah - I'm spoiled by python, I guess. And what the hell is wrong with SSH that they needed to imagine up powershell remoting, I'll never know.

probably, a lot
I haven't tried powershell remoting, but I guess it handles windows permissions

@TessellatingHeckler You think?
@TessellatingHeckler Trifles ;)

3:33 AM
yes. Typical linux interaction: "I want to get rid of FTP, can I use sftp?" "kind of, but then people can logon to your server and see everything and you have to hack loads of things up to let them just upload files@
because ssh is just an 80 line teletype piped via an enigma machine, with some wedding tinsel lobbed at it to make it a bit more shiny
it's /so/ linux, and /so/ not-microsoft
am I saying enough stupid yet?
I like ssh, and screen, and key file logins, and all, but ...

@TessellatingHeckler That's what changing their shell is for ;). I think powershell was completely ruined for me the first time I tried to pipe Get-CASMailbox into Get-ActivesyncStatistics.

.. what happens when you do that?

Shit blows up is my educated guess

get-ActivesyncStatistics is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet

it's not set up for the piping. It involves where's and foreach's

3:40 AM
Get-ActiveSyncDeviceStatistics, maybe?

@TessellatingHeckler sorry, devicestatistics

oh well, looks fun but can't get that distracted now

@TessellatingHeckler Haha sorry, get back to your public folders ;)

well sure, each user can have more than one activesync device
so you can't get activesyncdevicestatistics on a per-user basis

@TessellatingHeckler Sure you can - it takes -mailbox username
@TessellatingHeckler but you can't pipe in a mailbox from Get-Mailbox, or a mailbox from Get-CASMailbox. Can't pipe in a list of mailbox strings, either. Must get mailbox string from somewhere and foreach it in.

3:48 AM
get-casmailbox | foreach {Get-ActiveSyncDevicestatistics -Mailbox $_.Name}
that's hardly "ruinous"
why the hell do I have 7 activesync devices on record?

@TessellatingHeckler Oh, and there's a lot of junk data, too. Users with no sync show up with a blank record, dead syncs show up.
@TessellatingHeckler Usually for each different software upgrade on a phone that changes the device string, it creates a new pairing

junk data within exchange is hardly powershell's fault, though

It all falls under the MSFT umbrella

@quux Fair point. I guess my complaint with powershell can be summed up by saying: in trying to make it simple, they overcomplicated it.

4:00 AM
imho, the simplicity is there. if you want a simple and powerful scripting language - it's there. If you want a hundred thousand little cmdlets optimized for specific tasks - also there

now this, this is ruinous. "File match.ps1 cannot be loaded because the execution of scripts is disabled on this system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details."

@quux But the object types! For the love of $deity, the object types!!

you don;t have to use them if you don't want. it can still parse text if that's your thing

@TessellatingHeckler hahaha, set-executionpolicy. Yeah.. horrible.

@TessellatingHeckler yeah. we all run into that; we all turn it off

4:04 AM
@quux I can't if I'm touching anything that Microsoft touched - they roll new types for simple objects in a ton of their cmdlets. And don't get me started on COM objects.

but COM lets you control Excel
so it's worth it
oh damn, this is taking ages
it would be quicker to download, install and script in Python, then run it, wouldn't it?

@TessellatingHeckler Depends how fast you are with python - and if it can interface with what you're working on ;)

fast enough, and text files

oh, hell yeah then

for line in file1: for line2 in file2: if line2 in line: print both
ish

4:10 AM
@TessellatingHeckler Sounds like a whole lot of file reading
@TessellatingHeckler Oh, unless it's just those 2 files. I was thinking "for each file1, scan each file2 for matching lines"

no, just substring matching
downloaded python 2.7, installed, written script, run it, finishes instantly
powershell still running from earlier
guess it's doing regex matching or something
or I miswrote it

@TessellatingHeckler hahaha

or it's SLOW

Heh... "Less Snark". Fair enough :p

@MikeyB lol - I guess that's one way to police each other @ChrisS - works for me!

4:26 AM
serverfault.com/questions/301483/… What's amazing about this one is how he starts out all calm and collected, before his pinky goes and hits the caps lock and he goes bat-shit insane

@Holocryptic He made it 3 words in, that's worth something.

edited. ahem

@TessellatingHeckler I was just gonna vote to close then vote to delete, heh

Wow. I am tired. I almost just went and said something completely non-pc and generally offensive.

dawn is breaking, it's 5:30
FML

4:30 AM
@TessellatingHeckler What time do you have to report?

no time. It' effectively disaster recovery

oh. Suck

asap, preferably days ago

I didn't realize what you were up to

I spent all weekend poking at it, friday night, saturday, saturday night, sunday
left it fragile but working, came in today, someone had renamed, unmounted, deleted, and utterly broken it.

4:33 AM

@TessellatingHeckler You let your inner BOFH out, and properly shunned him, correct?

don't know who

ah, "administrator" then.

my powershell is still running

@Holocryptic Fun. What were you working on?

XP install from scratch. Good times
And it looks like I'm still missing drivers. Fucking Dell.

@Holocryptic Eww. Sorry.

meh. It's billable
But that's small consolation for tomorrow
Yeah, bloody hell. You get all the updates from Dell (allegedly) and it still has unfound devices

MySQL 4.1 question.... I don't even.

5:24 AM
You lost me at MySQL
Sounds like its incompatible
Don't do it. Or test it on a separate box

@Holocryptic Support ended in '06. It's like if someone came in here asking questions about NT 4.

haha, sweet

That squid authentication question was almost a good opportunity to break out the NTLM negotiation decoding. No such luck, another day.

looks interesting
Screw it. I'm not looking for the other drivers

@Holocryptic Heh. Back in '09, an MS patch to stop sending the local computer's hostname in the phase 1 negotiation broke a third party application of ours that was using cheesy HTTP authentication with NTLM. Had to prove to them that their application didn't implement the protocol correctly.
Staring at NTLM negotiation for a while gives you a deep appreciation for the difference between 07b208a2 and 078208a2

5:36 AM
haha, Nice. Took me a second to see that one
I am going to be so cranky today
Probably not as cranky as @TessellatingHeckler though

@Holocryptic Haha, no fun. You're eastern time zone?

@ShaneMadden Yeah, VA/DC

@Holocryptic Gotcha, my company's main office is about an hour from DC
@Holocryptic I take no blame for that one, I voted to close hours ago ;)

Its just a mess, and I'm too tired to try and make heads or tails of it. Needs mod intervention anyhoo
Stupid Adobe

@Holocryptic Agreed and starred, even though I don't yet know what you're talking about.

5:43 AM
I'm wondering if I really have to register Acrobat, or if I can go "Ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuu" since I put in the license code.

@Holocryptic Umm.. not sure on that one

Screw it, and screw Adobe

@Holocryptic Indeed.
Alright, it's sleep time I think. Later @Holocryptic (and anyone else who's still awake)

hey
I've got a weird day - got someone driving me to Rochdale tonight of all places, got a new big disk array being installed in a data centre there tomorrow and I'm going to be watching it get installed then doing some basic early config, then back home right after - odd to be doing that kind of thing in this country tbh

8:29 AM
Christchurch <-> Rochdale in one day?

yeah, hence me not driving - couldn't be bothered - 5 hrs or so, got some reading to do anyway
Just found this via reddit - seriously NSFW but I think very funny, seriously NSFW though ok; tinyurl.com/ywk2t8

Absent-mindedly clicks link as boss walks around corner fucfuckfuck....
I caught a glimpse, though. Please tell me that uses benny hill music.

Q: Java eats %100 cpu up

SJ.JafariI got this CentOS server in which a Java WebApp (Tomcat6+Hibernate+MySQL+Struts2) is being run. Usually cpu usage is about 10% but sometimes all of a sudden it goes to 100% and the application freezes. The process causing this condition is the java command, then the server have to be rebooted to...

with a simple "Yes, it does doesn't it."

Hah, I thought pretty much exactly those words when I saw that.

Morning

Morning all

hey

On that Java question, do we have a canonical "How to analyse runaway processes" we can close dupe to?

8:57 AM
Doesn't kill -3 show all running/Hanging threads in a java-app?
that way he could just take that and send it to the dev for fixing...

@TiZon: So it does. Handy to know :)

11:52 AM
hello. i am looking for a reliable mass email sending company which will support my c# coded application. i will send about 350k emails to my game registered members. so the price also should be reasonable. do you know any ? or how can i configure my smtp and my c# coded application to send emails safely ? i mean configure them as not dropping spam box.

we don't do that kind of thing sorry

12:07 PM
That's cute

@Chopper3: Yes, thank you for the response. A couple others here had said the same thing you did. :-)
Trying to migrate a system from an outside source to internal and wanted to know if I could throw it on an older barely used host (as it's temporary) instead of our "production" duct-taped system that's running 4.x

12:44 PM
upgrade the old host to 4.x
there are no drawbacks :)

@Pauska: Can't. It was a scrap system that was an old NAS appliance, the boss wanted to have a WDS server and wanted it installed on that. There was no way to get Win2008 on it without bending backwards in the time allotted. So I installed ESXi and virtualized it. Because it's an old appliance, the processor doesn't support 4.x
I forget which model Dell NAS it is.
It's next stop is the recycler in the sky.

ew.

sorry.
We didn't have the USB reinstall thumbdrive, you'd have to inline some drivers to get 2008 to work on it, there was no built-in CD drive, it was just a royal PITA.
But ESXi installed without any hiccups. Just had to be the old version.

user 'mailq' is pushing a LOT of flags at the moment, people don't realise the load on mods going for those kind of badges put - I know it makes the board better but it's a lot of work

From there 2008 was easy peasy to install.
