@cole re: deciding to move here. :)

SE's search function couldn't pour water out of a boot if the instructions were printed on the heel.
I'm trying to close a question as a dupe, it gives me the search box and I type in "capacity." Nope. "Capacity planning." Nope. I go to google and type 'ServerFault Capacity Planning' and the first hit is the canonical Q I'm looking for.

Was there once a "canonical" tag? Or am I dreaming that it went the way of meta tags?

@jscott: not sure about SF, but maybe its the community faq tag?

But an SE search of "capacity canonical" works well enough. e.g. the top three results are canonical "capacity" questions.

2 of the mods are leftovers from the beginning of the site who check-in ... never. One of those hardly did anything in the first place.
2 more haven't done much in the last quarter or more.
3 more are around, but a certain hedgehog gets to the flags faster than we can.
And then there's the hedgehog, who apparently sleeps <4 hours per day and spends the other 20 trolling the mod queue. When I handle a flag I wonder if he's on the sh*tter or if he's still browsing from his phone.

@JourneymanGeek I cannot seem to find such a tag on SF.

Also, I've been more frustrated than usual over the last month. There's been more crap pouring into the site since Google made the May change, site veterans have been more snarky in general, as SO continues to grow there's more crap from their users looking for tech support, and it doesn't matter if we have a Summer of Love or Winter of Discontent, it's all heading in the same direction.

@ChrisS Well FWIW I'm getting back to the review tools to attempt to be something of a productive force. No use in complaining about sinking if I'm not actively bailing water.
I either go through the review queue or post pictures of lube in here.

1:33 AM
I haven't touched a flag in hours!
And I won't touch one for hours more, since I'm busy!
@ChrisS The real secret is, I log in around 7-8 am and knock out the flags left overnight while eating breakfast. There's usually 5-10 flags every morning.

@Wesley yeah, it's more than a little bit discouraging though.

1:52 AM
ah hello

@ewwhite Sup gangster.

@ChrisS Do you think the Google change is to blame for all of the ills?

@JourneymanGeek Very little badgering would be required; I plan to stand in the next election.

@Wesley recovering from last night's terribleness...
didn't get to sleep

@ewwhite =( Is it all coming together though?
This is outrageous:

Q: HP iLo remove from Ubuntu system

Max0999I have got an HP server which apparently comes with something called iLo installed, I just want vanilla Ubuntu with verifiable checksums, how do I completely remove iLo? When I access it through SSH I get thrown into the hpiLo console.

1:59 AM
@Wesley yes

"something called iLO"
"I want it removed"
WT actual F

heheh

@Wesley DrunkenN00b proposes a new close reason!!! Behold its glorious simplicity and weep in awe!
This question appears to be off-topic because it hurt my brain. — HopelessN00b 1 min ago

How is ILO formed?!?
In the esxi config it's 255.255.255.0 for ipv4. Do you have some tips or another idea ? I think my networking settings are correct. When it doesn't work i try another configuration. How can i learn how this stuff work if i don't flailing arround and ask for help ? — Sancho 59 mins ago

@HopelessN00b I once nuked a user for precisely that reason.

2:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek I nominate you for next ServerFault mod, on that basis alone.

Bob
@Wesley I almost want to dig up a manual, circle it on the motherboard, and tell him to find a hammer and chisel.

meh. just hand him a sawzall.
If you're going to fuck shit up, you gotta do it right.

satisfying video

@Bob Kind of a coincidence... I want a hammer and chisel too... but I wouldn't use on his motherboard, so much as on his wetware.

Looking at houses... this one was owned by a pimp.

2:15 AM
@ewwhite 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms. wat

@ewwhite What's wrong with that house? Looks like the perfect to place to bang 8 hookers.

@RyJones remind me to never read the comments.

@JourneymanGeek yeah... disable them if you can

Handrails less than 34 inches. Inspection fail.

2:18 AM
@ewwhite There is a pimp outfitting store just south of where I work.

(Probably my drunk horniness... but it actually looks decent to me at the moment... what's the actual problem with it? It's only tolerable to look at when you're drunk and horny or something?)

Not sure if the kitchen, but this is terrible.

that is the kitchen

I'm so, so sorry.

@ewwhite thought you just bought a condo

2:22 AM
Dude at 0:27 just killed that whole commercial. Well done sir.

@JourneymanGeek reddit comments indicate the guy in the pink shirt breaks his ankle, and you see him in a wheelchair after
@jscott he looks very serious

@RyJones When he's in blue at 0:11, you think "OK, is this guy for real?" and then he's in red later and the answer is "Yes, he's quite real."

@jscott I've been tempted to stop in and see if it's really cheap costume wear or if it's well made clothing

Commercial date 2011-11-29, if they're still around they must be doing something right.
Surprised the pricing on Yelp is only $$.

they've been there since at least the early 90s.

2:30 AM
@jscott Well, that;s an overstatement. Someone has to make the gaudy crap people buy, that doesn't mean that anyone in that equation is doing something right.

@jscott Year 2001

@RyJones ow

@JourneymanGeek I watched again, you can see and hear it break.

@Wesley Yes, typo'd, my oops.
@HopelessN00b Someone is selling enough of this gear to float a business, that's alright in my book. :)

2:44 AM
... Well... fair enough. I obviously undervalue commercial viability, given that I still have to work for a living. If I didn't, I would have started selling gaudy crap back in 1990 and retired by now. =D

Ugh
My dad's going to get a friend of his to try to help me get a job. Apparently I need to describe my skillset in a way a non-techie person gets it.
Apparently my CV isn't good enough. I'm having shades of "What X Thinks I do"

@JourneymanGeek You facilitate the success of businesses through the skillful design, implementation, and management of networks and high performance computing systems.

"Does computers"

@Wesley I don't think he means management speak
@jscott: PRECISELY.
(and painting, and the fucking toilet. But that's a while nother story.)

I think my profile lists my skill as typing.

now it does

I self harm with Windows and Linux in exchange for money and alcoholism.

@Wesley: Right now, i do that for free ;p

@JourneymanGeek You should totally just make your own thing. Solve a problem. Let me find a blog post for you...

@Wesley: Actually...
I had an idea
@Wesley: I'm 31. And well...
I won't get anything done around here. Just too many damned distractions.

@JourneymanGeek Okay so please don't be immediately offended at the BS sound of these posts, but I like AppSumo, think Noah Kagan is a good guy, and his friends Nev has good ideas. So he just published some blog posts:
Markdown you gutter whore.

[How would you make $1000 in a month?](http://kopywritingkourse.com/make-an-extra-1000-in-a-month/)
[How would you make $10,000 in a month?](http://kopywritingkourse.com/10000-in-a-month/)

@Wesley Skip work a lot and return empties?

I don't understand anything any more
(How would you make $100,000 in a month?)[http://kopywritingkourse.com/make-an-extra-100000-in-a-month/]

Well fuck
I don't know what to say
But anyway, markdown being a whore aside
Those are just stupid off the wall blog posts, but it did get me thinking

2:59 AM
Plus some 404!

If you read about Noah Kagans Sumo Jerky idea and how that took off

I'm underpaid "Why isn't google working???" "Oh wait, I'm disconnected"

That's because the link got eaten
FFS markdown
Geez now I got silenced from talking for 7 seconds
I HATE EVERYONE

@Wesley: I'm of the opinion that the best ideas fill a niche that you find is unfulfilled.
At the moment, what I'd really like is cheap dedicated hosting. I'm wondering if something like one of those 'mac mini' colos, but with bringing your own systems makes sense.
Stuff like 'pricing' eludes me tho.
As well as what I'd need to actually put in initially to get things working.
(Which leads me to wonder where someone gets information like that if you have no idea where to start).

@Wesley what's this?

@Magellan chat has rate limiting too meta.stackexchange.com/questions/164899/…

@jscott I knew it had something. did they crank up the limit lately, or is the cat just whining?

@Magellan The latter.

@jscott makes sense. My cats start bitching about getting fed about 2 hours after the previous feeding.
Saw a guy with an Intel-branded shirt today that read "I prefer anti-social networking". I figure the gene pool is pretty much safe from his future influence.

3:27 AM
Speaking of cats, one of ours just cost me an iPhone 6+.

@Magellan: I tend to refer to my gaming habits as "Anti Social Gaming"

@jscott they peed on it? or the vet bills was the same as buying one?
yikes

I can get ten used cats for that price!
But litter box duty on said pre-enjoyed cats would suck.

o0
I'm pretty sure my fairly spoilt dog is cheaper ;p
(Even if he has more stuff than I do)

3:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek We've a ~52kg mastiff mutt too. She's now officially cheaper than this 4kg cat.

What happened to the fleabag? ;p

> Whether it's a multi-domain AD environment with tens of thousands of users, a small cluster of Linux webservers, or a tangled web of network cables, systems are all just complex tools to do complex jobs, perpetually in need of someone to make them perform better and ensure they're always available when someone needs them.

@JourneymanGeek Spay. Benign lump removal, then discovery of friable, infected uterus.

I've found that something along those lines works a lot better than the unabashed truth - "I do shit you're too dumb to understand."

3:36 AM
Plus the last line item, $15, is a useless cone-of-shame that didn't fit.

@HopelessN00b; close.
Tho sometimes you can substitute dumb with laze or too impatient.

4:06 AM
@jscott my cat's insulin went from $150 to $250 every six months recently

4:26 AM
@Magellan I think because I posted so many links that the auto-spam detector thought I was a bad person and when I tried to chat it said to retry in 7 seconds.

@Wesley Next careers ad should be for a new VP engineering.
;p

@JourneymanGeek So it's tough to think and concentrate where you are now eh?
I can sympathize.
No idea how I'm pulling a FTJ and trying to get my side work done and attempting to take some care of the parents.

@Wesley: My parents are suprisingly demanding of my time. And I keep getting dragged along to dog-sit

@JourneymanGeek Yeah I get it.
Totally get it.

Yesterday? I got dragged along to help get embroidery thread
And I have some stuff with 'work' that needs my actual skills. Alongside random stuff like scanning and emailing, and looking for stuff to apply to.

5:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Got any friends you can crash with for a while?

@Wesley: Oh, I'm not mad at them or anything

I get angry a lot. =)

I'm vaguely alright, its just a crazy period of time
I don't ;p
You don't want to see me angry.

5:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek You rip your clothes off and reveal rippling green sweaty skin!
Pretty sure that's ebola.

@Wesley Nah, it's hypochromic anemia that causes green skin. Ebola just causes fever... and hemorrhaging blood from everywhere. And death. And weird news coverage in the US.

@HopelessN00b On a scale of newborn to white girl, how drunk are you?

Um... either too drunk to understand that question, or not drunk enough. Dunno which.

@Wesley I don't understand why we pander to that level of cluelessness. Questions like that show no effort at all and hurt the site

g'day

5:49 AM
@Iain We rep whores, dawg.
All 'bout dem points.

@Iain Because we can't tell the people who ask those kind of questions what we really ought to, because it's not nice tell someone they're an inconsiderate piece of shit for wasting our time instead of punching three letters into Google.

I'm sure it will be delteed before the weekend is oute
One more close vote and we can start deleting it

The whole "be nice" to everyone, regardless of whether or not they deserve courtesy, thing implicitly encourages people to shit all over the site.

Answering their crappy questions does the same

@Iain But... but... my points. :(

5:56 AM
@Iain Right... which is why instead of answering, I said he was so stupid that it was offensive to the very notion of sentience. Of course, I had to say it "nicely," so it lost a lot in translation.

Yup it's entirely offensive

Well, the good news is that if the question gets deleted before those answers gets another upvote, the only effect is that the dipshit OP is on the verge of being question banned.
Heh, lookit that. Even google.fr returns the Wikipedia link for HP Integrated Lights-Out in the first 5 links. There's something seriously wrong with a site that doesn't outright ban "users" like that.

Wonder if I could run a C7000 chassis in my garage...

@Dan it'll be cool enough over the winter, is it a cavity wall and well insulated for the sound ?

Dan
@Iain It's power that worries me

@Dan what feed have you got in there ?

Dan
@Iain It's kind of theoretical because I'm hoping to buy next year - this one just has a 13amp spur

@Dan what does a C7000 draw ?

Dan
9:33 PM
@Iain Seems to be hugely load dependant, though I think 3000 watts would take me most of the way
I think you can configure a cap, which might do the trick
I've just seen this, you see, and the real cost to my business would be just shy of £700 which feels like a huge amount of computing power

3kw is just over 14 A @ 208 V

Dan
shit, I calculated at 240v, schoolboy mistake

@Dan just take some of the blades out as spares

Dan
I mean, they ship with 6x 2000W PSU's
But yeah @Iain, or at least don't power them up at once. I'm sure I've seen them configured for low power environments in dev locations
Installed 80Mb's worth of "HP Power Advisor" - best have my model

@chopper3 will have real world figures
speak of the devil ...
@Dan I just checked an we have a nominal 230V so you can just squeeze 3kW
I wouldn't really like t try it though

Dan
9:44 PM
This HP Power Tool is shite

The best bits of HP are Agilent

hello people, can I be of assistance? also, in a fit of confusion at being left alone for the whole weekend by my entire family I have finally joined facebook after avoiding it (pretty well) for a decade or more - I'm a bit scared by it
ok, looking back over the past few messages, I too have a C7k in my basement, it averages about 3.1Kw overall but the whole room does about three times that in total

Dan
@Chopper3 Just mulling, but yeah - back of a fag packet style on the HP size tool with the specs in the link is telling me to size my incoming power supply for 2100W but expect 1600 - 1900W in reality
@Chopper3 Are you running three phase, or just lots of circuits?

@Dan the HP Power Tool is shite

@Dan I have two UPS's and it all runs off that

@Chopper3 oh so that's what you look like

@Iain not the best pic tbh, kind of picked a shit one on purpose
@Iain the pic of me on SF is a real on - old but real

@Chopper3 I'm cycling to Runcorn tomorrow too

Dan
@Chopper3 Wouldn't mind your thoughts on this. Cost to business £700:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-ProLiant-Blade-Server-C7000-16x-BL460c-Twin-Dual-Core-E5150-2-66-GHz-4GB-RAM-/400774085383?pt=UK_Computing_Servers&hash=item5d4fff3b07
Just feels like an easy way to lab a bunch of stuff

@Iain haven've been for 20 years, enjoy

9:51 PM
@Chopper3 Well Liverpool, Hale, Widnes, Runcorn, Frodsham and back down the Wirral home. It'll be an adventure

@Iain grew up in frodsham
@Dan shit they're G1's - wow, I can let you have loads of G6's instead

Dan
@Chopper3 ...hang on, thought they were G5

@Dan nopers, g1, and only one passthrough!!!!
and only one OA ffs

Dan
@Chopper3 Are we on the same link - definitely says G5 and 16x pass through. Don't care about redunant OA, just for labbing

if you can get it down to say 800 quid it's not bad but tell them to leave out the blades I can give you loads better for free

Dan
9:54 PM
@Chopper3 Wouldn't ask for free, mate

@Chopper3 nice, I quite often get there via Ince & Helsby but now the tunnel is open to cyclists for the winter we can go the other way

Dan
@Chopper3 But what ya got?

@Dan G5 was 54xx series
@Dan well we throw out G6's at the mo at work so you can have whatever I can get

Dan
@Chopper3 Christ

@Iain Helsby is a surname that's a bit part of my heritage

Dan
9:55 PM
Says
Model:
C7000 BL460c G5

Almost tempted to take the punt, and kick off they're not right

@Dan I think you can do better, if you can get the c7k and an OA I can sort the rest, might have some spare virtual connects

@Chopper3 I just go there for the climbs

Dan
@Chopper3 oh man, seriously, I'd be forever in your debt.
I'm getting fucked by not having a proper lab now

@Dan it's the 5150 that's the give away - intel-bitch that I am
@Dan to be honest I'd sooner have a pair of DL380 G7's and an MSA P2000 G3 - I think that'd be more useful as a lab and be cheaper/lower power

Dan
@Chopper3 Specced up DL380's seem to be quite expensive

9:57 PM
@Dan I get all of mine for free and my power paid for - it's easy for me but if it was my own money I'd never do what I do now

Dan
@Chopper3 This is it, need cheap and just a decent amount of server instances essentially

@Dan I can see that, if you put the c7k into the right power mode it can be just as good I suppose
@Dan maybe go for this but ditch the blades and look for another passthrough and another OA perhaps - or even do a deal with them?

Dan
I've only worked with Flex, but I wonder if this is a better deal if I'm ignoring blades
I've got to shoot, but I'll try and catch you next week, @Chopper3. Need to get something sorted, else I'm going to fall behind

@Dan that looks much more promising, no expertise in that cisco inter but it's a bog-standard L2 thing so it'll be fine, plus the brocade FC inters which are a piece of piss and much more decent blades too - I'm seriously happy to let you have whatever we've got btw
@Dan ok, cheers, let me know before you buy ok, I'm home all week

Dan
@Chopper3 Thanks mate
