7:26 AM
@johnp morning

7:38 AM
happy thursday
it was really warm last night...strange this time of year

4 hours later…
11:37 AM
I am having a bit of a mental problem with following question
0
Q: Suggest free SW with data driven graphics (scripting?) capabilites

Louis ShragaLooking for an Illustrator alternative were I could have a template with some variables for font, background and foreground color and an icon with some CutContours for a cutter. At the end would like to run sort of a script to create a rendered PDF (or similar) file for printing on a plotter/cutt...

I fail to see what problem the user is trying to solve?
I mean neither sketch or illustrator is a software for data driven graphics.
So why exactly would you search for a alternative for something that does not really do what you want.
With a software that does not do really what you want either
Its like they have not thought this thing trough at all.

very badly written. Maybe he wants some sort of user input data collected from a website to fill in a design template for cutting?

I agree, DV'd

Then why not do svg?
Thatway you can have user preview?

dont ask me, i just dwaw pwetty pictchos. mornin @Vincent , you ever hear of that board game Bloc by Bloc? My sister mentioned it as a christmas gift but im not sure if it'll arrive on time

11:46 AM
no worries. it seems to be new but im surprised she asked for it...thought there might be some hype over it

Looks fun. I wouldn't trust the 8.0 rating too much, though, as it's only 26 votes
and as to delivery times... I have no clue :)
looks fun tho
and morning :)
(afternoon)

sunset time so maybe the rebels will be in my block next? ;)

hehe k, just said id ask as I know you play board games. Never thought my sis did though, dunno if i could risk it arriving in time for the holidays.
sunset? i know you have shorter daylight hours but that seems bizarre to my small brain @joojaa
do you have that swappy thing where you have half a year without daylight?

sun sets at 15.14 today so still 1:30 hours of light tough it already quite dark outside
Its almost as bad as it gets @johnp its only 10 days or so for solistice so the day will only shorten by about 15 minutes form today
on the opposite end during summer we have long days

interesting
i never thought of the effects that would have on nature? if any

12:04 PM
Err ever heard of winter

haha yeah... was just thinking in terms of nocturnal animals...sleep patterns. ignore my ditsiness :P

Well bears sleep for many months
hedgehogs, insects and bats hibernate
@johnp let me draw a picture for you
This is how the shadow of earth behaves trough out the year at 15:00 helsinki time
over the span of one year (2016)

12:23 PM
oh cool
hehe eternal sunrise or sunset must be fun to look at
something about that yo-yo effect makes me giggle

12:42 PM
sunset lasts for a very long time
@johnp the red dot is where i am

i may add finland to my list of destinations

oh there was this video that shows the difference well

12:57 PM
@johnp as you see if you want to relax you should come in the winter
And thats is shouthern finland it gets more ridiculous up north

i find the summer much stranger lol

1:21 PM
affinity photo for windows is out of beta now

yeah saw that, ill pass

just bought it lol. not giving up adobe just yet but i wanna support the devs
as far as illustration goes i like how they break down the dichotomy of vector and raster workflows into one app

Well it does not work for my workflow

scripting?
i feel so silly, im trying to piece together a Medusa drawing without my manikin software and I'm looking up the anatomy of boobies... my books dont go into great detail :v
may end up covering it in drapery...trying to make a greek bust sculpture

1:36 PM
Im not comfy with a application that is developped without giving good tought on how it can be extended
But what i really would like is shader support

i see...

I mean its very critical for the long term success.
Its fine if you have a HUGE company behind you to engineer all yourself
But a smal company has to put extendability as a numer one feature of anything they make
otherwise DOA

is adobe extensible in this way?

Yes
Badly but it is
and allways has had a API for programmers
One of the reason of photoshops success in the 90's

1:52 PM
ah ok. I would expect Affinity to implement this at some point, if they haven't started already. They sound like they have their code well organised from what I've read on the forums. I know that all their tools are already node based under the hood so that will be interesting to see in future

Yes but you can not implement it after the fact
Either you are open in your design at day one
OR you have broken support

yeah you mentioned this before, lets see if they have some sort of plan to unveil something

Sure...
in parctice ive seen many apps like this.
maya had scripting from day one
3dSmax did not
it halted 3dmaxes usergroup for 5 years
@johnp its a bil like being emberrased of your family

haha with regard to how well their app is put together or something?

2:07 PM
@johnp exactly

2:56 PM
@johnp that was exactly what Fireworks tried to do (and where it failed horribly imo)

lol i know of fireworks but never used it. well, they still have two apps but each can open the other

3:27 PM
@PieBie yes its ultimately about the ability to reason the effects of your actions
In the end Adobe wins because
...
they authored the language you use to diseminate your work
postscript then PDF
You could make a system that does this based on svg But svg is terribly crppled
it has features that are nomconductive and misses central things

3:48 PM
hehe yeah that's a bit of a hurdle for Serif alright xD i wish the guys luck though

4:07 PM
did you ever drink so much coffee that you fill empty in the pit of your soul?

4:29 PM
._.

:3
ive been trying to draw boobs for the past 2 hours ;(
wasnt able to reinstall my manikin software so im in the dark lol

2 hours later…
6:08 PM
@johnp lol
