12:14 AM
@GiantCowFilms I'm very confused by your images. What color? Your with and without look nearly identical so I don't understand what you're trying to match from one to the other

2 hours later…
1:49 AM
@Ryan I am
Unless I sent the same picture, they are different
one is more red.
its not drastic, but it matters

you sent me two almost entirely black images - is that what you meant to send?

@Ryan Look for the sun
@Ryan They are part of an HDRI
its the suns I'm trying to match

you want the brightness to match as well?

@Ryan no, try to not influence that as much as possible

or just the very, very slight color cast?

1:55 AM
@Ryan It has bigger impacts, see the picture I just posted
the gap between where the filter affects the picture and where it doesn't is clearly visible, because of the color cast.
(The brightness also makes a difference, but I have a different way of handling that.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to help because I don't at all understand the issue. Maybe if you draw marks on it indicating things
I'm sure I could match any colors but I don't know what colors you're trying to match. I just don't get what you're explaining
and nothing I see is actually more red it just appears that way

one moment, I'll make it more obvious
@Ryan the difference is slight, but the left is the target and the right is the starting point. My goal is to have a lut to go from whats on the right to whats on the left. Its a subtle difference, but noticeable (at least for me)

okay I think I just did it but maybe going the wrong way.
I made the filtered match the unfiltered which would make sense to me
Is that what you want?

Yes
except for the brightness.
that should stay the same to the original

yeah I didn't change the brightness just matched the color for you

2:03 AM
@Ryan okay
@Ryan could you also share the process?

let me send it to you first and if its what you expected than I'll explain how I did it

Okay
thanks

I've never actually saved a LUT before, this could be cool
if the LUT doesn't work I'll just send you a PSD with the adjustments but trying to export the LUT now
yeah I don't think it'll work as a LUT. So I'm uploading a PSD for you with a single Curve adjustment in it for you. If you need me to explain it after I will

Did you do it by eye?

no
I did it with the info panel like I said earlier

2:12 AM
?
@Ryan okay

whats the ? for?

the info panel
I've found the info panel. Yay!

Window > Info Panel hehe
this is a tutorial I made a while ago that should answer everything for you while this file saves
er well, I used a curve on yours. In that video I used Selective Color but it shows how to use the Info Panel
I don't know why Google Drive doesn't want to upload :\
restarting browser seems to have fixed it

the color sample tool as just revolutionized my life!

yeah, most tutorials suck which is why I decided to start making my own. Nobody uses it, because they're dumb
subscribe to my youtube! :D hehe

2:25 AM
@Ryan ignorant
@Ryan I will
@Ryan actually, you should make a twitter
so all your awesome videos (and links like the stanford guy's site) can be collected in one place and delivered into people inboxes

I post them to Instagram. I probably should make a Twitter too and have it just autopost
Anyhow getting a little off-topic. Get the PSD in that drive, turn off and on the adjustment and tell me if that's what you expect
if so then just convert any image to Lab color mode and then dupe that adjustment over. Then if you want to go back to RGB you can, just tell it to flatten cause the curve I did is in Lab

@Ryan you didn't post the stanford link (which is epic) on the instagram, as far as I can tell
my c drive is full so it won't download one moment

stanford link? huh?

Sep 7 at 12:35, by Ryan
Stanford Photography Professor made his entire coursework public, of course its getting so much traffic right now some of it can't be accessed: https://sites.google.com/site/marclevoylectures/

yeah I guess I should make a Twitter and tie everything to that. Can't really post links on Instagram
Thanks for the suggestion!

2:32 AM
@Ryan trying to download the PS file
having tech issues
man I miss my new computer
@Ryan just curious, why did you use lab color?

For a lot of color correction stuff its easier and in some ways works better

@Ryan Some how I think you corrected the right one to the wrong one, sorry I wasn't clear

ah its possible

so how'd you do it
it does seem like a good technique at least

select the eye dropper told

2:40 AM
yeah, but how'd you control the curves

hold shift and click on a point or two

I've never seen curves like that
@Ryan okay

so as I was saying lol
hold shift and click a point or two

sorry
@Ryan okay

then go to the other image and hold shift and click a point or two
you should now have two points showing in your info panel

2:42 AM
you mean open each image in a separate document?

yeah would be easier for now
you can do it in one document but let me explain in two

alright so you have Without Filter and With Filter open in separate documents
you have a point or two in similar locations on each one right?

still working

with me so far?

2:44 AM
okay, continue
I can't follow along, my computer is dying
but continue with the steps
I'll follow when I can fix my tech issues
@Ryan yes
hello?

one sec

2:59 AM
made a tutorial for you, its just encoding now and then ill upload it to youtube and link you
Going to upload it as unlisted since not really a useful tutorial to anyone else. Or at least I doubt it would be

3:12 AM
@Ryan thanks

finally done encoding. uploading now, says it'll take about 15 minutes to finish uploading

no prob, I'll probably have to watch it tomrrow
thanks a ton!

3:33 AM
@Ryan BTW, the color sampler doesn't cooperate across two documents, at least for me.

no it doesn't for anyone

@Ryan the video is private

woops just changed it to unlisted
work now?

yup
okay I see what you are doing
although I probably wouldn't have stuck a point within the clipping band.
but I've got the picture

make sure you watch to 2:22 it'll show you a tip for when you start changing the curve
and I have no idea what you mean by clipping band
but as long as you understand! Did it answer your questions?

3:44 AM
that little red band around the highlight its caused by one channel clipping when other don't
@Ryan I think so
although I don't see why you'd need different adjustments for different colors
the cast from the filter should be consistent

Not identical photos, close but not identical. And error in positioning of the markers

Okay
thanks
I'll have to see how the final output looks
cya later

53, 88 were the L channels on one
59, 89 on the other
perhaps if I kept moving the markers around until I got perfect matches on the L channel the color would've been closer to the same
I'll let you do that level of scrutiny :)
im going to sleep, take care

9 hours later…
1:17 PM
Its (my) Friday!

1:53 PM
whew, so scared. updating firmware on the Sony using the office computer. If it bricks you're gonna see a grown man cry

2:15 PM
woohoo not sure if I'll notice improvements but at least the camera functions!

2:49 PM
phew

hi

hi

3:20 PM
@Ryan well one is half a stop brighter than the other

Did it work for you when back on a better computer? @GiantCowFilms

@Ryan better computer is currently w/o motherboard. I just needed to shut everything else down
I just woke up, so I haven't had a chance yet
going to test now

3:38 PM
@Ryan BTW, is there any good reason not to do this in RGB (it would save a headache

less work in Lab
not sure why its a headache but then I don't know the rest of your workflow and what you're doing
but yeah you can do it in RGB, same concept
but in the Curves adjustment where I worked in a, b channels you'll have to work in the R, G and B channels (Not the RGB combined channel)
and then be sure to change the Adjustment mode to Color since RGB doesn't separate Light from Color otherwise

Oddly, I found I got slightly better results doing it in HSL

that works. could use Selective Color Adjustment, HSL, Color Balance, Curves - whatever works. Main idea is just to use that info panel to see when the colors match the original so whatever is easiest for you
and since you're using adjustments you can then use that same HSL for other rest of the images assuming they're all requiring the same adjustment.

4:49 PM
@Ryan @Ryan, sorry I just saw your message. Good almost afternoon. : )
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ Thank you Darth Vader.

@ElizabethHart ??

@joojaa Hello joojaa
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ You said welcome. I just saw your message, so I said thank you.

hi

bop

ah fuu its noon already

4:57 PM
it's 6pm here and i just woke up ¬_¬
i feel so defeated lol

5:16 PM
wrapping up a wp plugin, so exciting

5:36 PM
seems since I bought my camera used it already had the controller on it from the previous owner. I just needed to put the app on my phone
score figured it out and it works. Better than Canon actually

6:07 PM
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ that's excellent :)
oh is the controller a firmware thing then? @Ryan
i keep drooling at A7s :( it makes me sad

No firmware is different. I updated firmware today on the work computer and the remote controller
It works really well. Cause when it shows up on my phone from the app I can Share it immediately if I didn't want to do much/any post processing
Ill just have to really watch memory space on my phone

oh you can transfer photos over now? fancy
@BESW half way through V for Vendetta now... I'm having doubts about V's fidelity ;(

6:47 PM
@JohnB Thank JohnB. Sorry I am just now seeing all of your messages. I have been busy fixing my resume. :) etc.

6:58 PM
Full room today :) just popping in to shout a hello to everyone all the way from Italy: HELLO!

Nice, have fun @PieBie :3

2 hours later…
9:23 PM
@johnp [insert ViFi joke here]

oh dear lol

Also, if you're unaware--the beginning of one of the chapters has V singing a song, "This Vicious Cabaret," which was actually released as a record to accompany the comic:

haha i spotted a copyright note on the bottom of the page! lol
