Q: Thursday Weekly Design Challenge

RyanOn Thursdays at 15 UTC we're going to be hosting a weekly design challenge. Come in to Ink Spot A random topic will be provided for people to design on. I'll host and pick topics the first few weeks but then open it up to anyone else who wants to throw out a topic. It could be a logo, a new way...

2:07 PM
JohnB has added an event to this room's schedule.

@JohnB thanks didn't know there were also room schedules

I knew of them but I'm not entirely sure I did it right, that was my first

don't suppose you've ever worked with CakePHP or Laravel or anything?

nope

2:25 PM
@Tablesalt I haven't checked it out so I can't give a solid recommendation but Code School has a Fundamentals of Design course, it's not free though
they usually put out some solid content though
Ah, I see the first level is free so you can at least check it out

2:50 PM
Hey @Brendan
and @Boris

Hello. Who summoned me here?

possibly the event

@JohnB What event is all about?

Q: Thursday Weekly Design Challenge

RyanOn Thursdays at 15 UTC we're going to be hosting a weekly design challenge. Come in to Ink Spot A random topic will be provided for people to design on. Hi all, @Brendan @Boris_yo @JohnB everyone participarting?
:( is anyone participating?

3:00 PM
I'm in

@go-me you in this week?
@marcusdoesstuff ?
@justvolleyball hi there, did you come for the design challenge?

Yeah, let's do it

Alright looks like its just us today
20 minutes to design a logo for your SE name

too hard? too easy?

3:05 PM
let's do it

It's a little loose, but sure

topics always fairly loose to not be too restricting, not everyone is experienced so leaving it open to interpretation allows different skill levels to do it however they're most comfortable
time is starting

3:19 PM
7 minutes remain
time is up
mine is pretty bad, never been good at logos

wow! now mine is really really bad
that's really good John

awww haha
well thanks

grumpy and unamused? :P

3:29 PM
pretty much

used your tablet I assume? Is that a font or your handwriting?

no

I'm pretty much incapable of drawing with a mouse (or at all), but I like to blame it on being left handed

im left handed
it is tablet, its not my handwriting. sorry

How do you upload an image?

3:35 PM
ah gotcha

upload button next to chatbox

Doesn't look like it's there
Does that require a lot of rep?

Hmm I don't think so, but you can just go to imgur.com instead

My SE name is Just Volleyball

edited that for you
nicely done, what did you use?

3:40 PM
thx
Illustrator
Thanks for the topic, Ryan. Guess I found an avatar to use instead of the random pinwheel polygons

All hail Illustrator. I hear inkscape is better at drawing curved paths, tho'.

@FirstDraft you're welcome. Thanks for participating

@Zachiel any reason why? Ai just added the rubber band feature from PS which makes it better

Inkscape is better for some curves. If I had more time, I would have run it through with some Spiro splines. Being unable to add effects to more than one path at once is a pain

@JohnB A colleague from the graphics dept. told me so. Bezier handles are.... hard to set, IMHO.
anyway, I was here for a different reason - unfit for the main site. I need to give some skin an alien-ish coppery tint, but eerything I do just seems to tan the skin. I'm woriking on GIMP

3:51 PM
Like a sheen?

@Zachiel that's not necessarily unfit for the main site
If you're trying to achieve an effect and have failed, it's okay to ask. We just would like to see what you have tried and didn't work

I'm not exactly sure you mean what I have in my mind right now but... no. I don't really need the skin to look metallic. I'm changing the skin color of an existing drawing to make a fantasy avatar for a friend's character in a role-playing game. She's a wood elf
(have some examples - the 4th guy in the last pic I think)
@JohnB I'm not sure I can upload the modified image, since I'm not the owner of it and I think it's bad form between artists to modify images without their consent. A sample maybe?

A sample would probably fine. Here's the close reason you want to avoid:
> If you're asking for help with implementation, please include what you've tried and why it didn't work with screenshots. Please edit your post with what your desired results are, what resources you referenced and why those didn't work. See this meta post for discussion and see this post on how to ask a good question.

4:52 PM
@JohnB db

close enough
DonB?

DomB :)
DaBomb, gotcha

I'll take it

Too bad I am busy, it'd be fun to participate on Thursdays

I did try opening the loop so it was a clearer J but didn't like the look
but when I sign my name, it's a closed loop like that so that was my justification

5:03 PM
There's usually 3-6 girls in our CS courses here. In this one there is 0...

which class?

Simulation and modeling

3-6 was typical for me too in a class size of 20-30
But definitely a few classes without any

I have gotten to meet some designers on campus this semester due to my UX course. I may even go to the design club :P

DA.
Oh, I completely missed the design challenge.
That looks fun.
@-me next time!

5:10 PM
will do!

@DA. you got it

I think the chat event I made should ping anyone who has been in the room in the past X days
as I found out, that e-mails you

DA.
are any of you in here on dribbble?

nope, I don't have much of an online presence

@JohnB for posting this weeks (future weeks) think I should edit the one answer or make a new answer each week?

5:14 PM
I'm not designer enough for that, haha

@Ryan new answer I think

@DA. think @Yisela might be on there. I may have signed up but don't use it if I did

also Ryan that chat event thing tweets! twitter.com/StackDesign for all the dozens of followers haha

Don't you have to be invited?

DA.
Yea, I think so.
I might have an invite. let me check
actually, I can't tell
Dribbble doesn't have the best UI

5:19 PM
Lacking some UX for sure

5:32 PM
@DA. yes its interesting its like graphic designers dont mind bad UI after all.

@Ryan Next time, I couldn't join today, too much work! But these are fun, I hope you keep doing them.

@go-me I'll do my best too, if I'm ever gone I'm sure JohnB or Da or even you can pick a topic just as easily

@Ryan Great! This should become a tradition, more people will join eventually and it's very laid back as concept. 20 minutes isn't that much, but that makes it a very good exercise!

Thanks! That's the idea. Hopefully with time and consistency we get a solid core of participants.

It's just the second week, it will.

So you and JohnB are left handed, that's funny. I remember working with a left handed and "raging" at having to change the side of their mouse when I needed to show them something on screen haha

5:42 PM
I use mouse in my right hand

same

That's interesting, I guess then you're both knowing all the 1000000 shortcuts on keyboards and using them more than clicking. Or have good dexterity.

writing, eating, and golf are about the only things I actually do left handed

haha

I'm all left except mouse, guess its just from years of not switching the side of the computer and buttons
Snowboarding, wakeboarding, martial arts, writing, all of it left hand and left foot

5:48 PM
Good to know your 1-inch punch will come from the left :P
I'm right handed but hold my hockey stick on the left, I guess it's because I got used that way too since my big bro hockey sticks were are for left handed people. I supposed it's the same for mouses, I don't think I've seen left handed mouses besides the typical simple logitech mouses!
By the way you should revive your volleyball design idea, it looked cool too

eh I messed that up by being too hard on people. Learned from the mistake to make the weekly exercise but dont think I'll try the volleyball one again. Not right now at least
If you want to you're welcome to do so, you should be able to make a chatroom or can ask a moderator to make one for you if not

6:10 PM
@Ryan I thought that volleyball idea was just people login in when they felt like it and updating the last image. Maybe I'll recycle your idea later, if beginners feel welcomed they can just post randomly. That was a cool concept.

Well I use to do that concept all the time, its how I learned design. To me it should really be about exploring and trying new things. But most just wanted to make silly images. I was also told that my own volleys were too difficult for others to work with and I should take it down a notch.
Then a lot of people also wanted something with a bit of direction. The weekly exercise hopefully is enough direction to get people started without making it difficult
It was really my fault that it didn't work out. I should've let people make silly images as long as they were having fun and designing something

haha well there's always something that can be done with any image. I noticed you have a very "fluid" style if I can call it this way, it's nice (sorry I'm not too good about naming stuff, I just "do".)

I can understand how it's a bit frustrating if you want to explore styles, the internet is already filled with memes and cat pictures.
I like grotesque a bit so if people try too hard I'll use my comic sans. But I promise I won't always do stupid montages ;)

I can't find it now, might be on an external at home, but I still have the first ever volleyball match I did when I was 8 years old. Actually I just found the exact background image from it

Might be different with designers... I'm usually the only one who does montages and I feel when I do stuff that is too serious, people think I'm trying to show off. But here I could actually explore other styles and be a bit more creative. That's also why I found that volleyball idea interesting

It was that picture with a girl crying and an atomic bomb added to it. Its AWFUL

6:22 PM
Yes a classic

But through doing volleyball for years and years I learned masking and layering and texture and all that stuff to really make things interesting

That's the first time I saw that volleyball idea (here). Very good indeed to train your designer's brain!
On that image you posted, I think I would overlay some kind of field of flowers or something to show a before/after, now/then, good/bad, beautiful/ugly duality

yeah I was 8 at the time, didnt really think like that
I know the author of that book and every artist in it. I might be in it, not even sure.

Well I'll read it, looks interesting. I have to admit, I never read a single book about digital design. Only old art books. I guess this will be my first one.

I've never read it, just know it exists. I've read a book about Channels and that's about it

6:29 PM
I'll check if it's on my kindle unlimited plan! Would be nice
I read tutorials if that counts but that's not really about style :/
And I curse video tutorials!

DA.
Designers don't read books. We just look at the pictures. :)

Yes, I guess it's the same for most of us

I think part of the issue with the volleyball which is what I'm hoping to avoid with the weekly exercise is that most here don't work in print and graphics. A lot are more all web and UX focused

@JohnB On a second tought, I don't want to associate this profile with that work.

So how does it make a difference? You mean they don't actually do lot of montages?

6:33 PM
@go-me yeah a lot kind of shy away from montages / composition. They're more comfortable using Illustrator and Grids and such. That's why I'm trying to keep topics broad on the weekly so people can do compositions if they want to or illustrations if they're more comfortable with that side of things

@Ryan That was a good opportunity for them to play around with Photoshop. But both "contests" are good... although I can see how it can be easier with the thursday one for people who prefer Illustrator. Personally, I love Photoshop and working on textures... and Illustrator is a bit too "dry" for what I like to do
Photoshop is like that dream craft box I was dreaming of when I was young <3
Kids are so lucky today, they probably have no idea!
Internet the biggest library ever, Photoshop, the biggest art box with all the tools...!

thats how I started. A friend of my dad's worked for the local newspaper and burned me a copy of Photoshop 4. I had already been drawing anime characters and stuff in MS Paint but then it was like, WOW! I've got unlimited art supplies.
even now I'm trying to get better at sketching and figure drawing and find myself more comfortable on tablet in photoshop than on paper just because of fear that paper is permanent and wasteful and runs out

haha yes unlimited art supplies! That's awesome.

It's hard to get back to sketching after years of Photoshop. I used to paint and draw but I find it almost easier to simply use Photoshop now. And art supplies are expensive and take a lot of room compared to a computer indeed. Unlimited canvas!
Anyway I'm sure a lot of us even find it hard to do handwriting now. At least I find it hard and find myself very clumsy when I actually need to use a pen

woo
Anyway I have unlimited paper resources

6:49 PM
Tablets are cool, I have one but probably used it 2 times. It's very hard to get used to it, it requires a lot of practice and patience at the start I guess :/

Which is cool as we have a 3d printer that glues paper together and cuts the shape out.

How come you got unlimited paper and we don't?

We are sponsored by the local paper mill

Must be cool, you have access to ton of scraps (and good stuff)

they make about 2 km of 10m wide paper sheet a minute so theyhave paper to spare
so thats 20 000 m^2 a minute, and that is a LOT of paper

6:53 PM

Yeah

that's you but instead of money, it's paper
I remember doing giant paper airplane at the print shop. That was almost a 3-4' long weapon when thrown (yes, they flew). Very fun to have access to these things

@go-me don't know if you've been over there but what I'd really like to try and get for us is what Photography.SE has

yes but still they make about 10k profit every minute. Which is why they wanted us to build a washingmachine for the paper mill so they could shorten the rupture. See coated paper is painted with rock based paint and when the process ruptures it sprays this substance all over the place

the photo at the top of their SE is voted on and changed every week

6:57 PM
perhaps we could have one of those in the sidebar. Hahaa maybe the weekly compo winner gets that place

Nice! I'll have a look. I never really though I knew enough in Photography but I haven't explored that stack yet. I might get to learn Lightroom.

But are these photos taken by the users or can I modify some and post them? I don't really have good equipment for photos

Those photos are taken by the users

perhaps we can replace the newsletter question

Q: Image of the week "hall of fame"

friol You may know that http://photo.stackexchange.com/ (this site's parent :) has a "Photo of the week" contest. Here are all the images featured on the homepage from the beginning of the current year in reverse chronological order. Historical archives for previous years, see the archives list at t...

@joojaa I see! Hey one thing I know about paper mills is how they stink. But I'd have lot of fun seeing the whole process there
@joojaa Yes, good idea. Newsletter...pfff

7:00 PM
@go-me no its not the paper mill that stinks its the cellulose factory. But these are located indifferent places.

@joojaa I see. I visited a town with that cellulose factory then. All I remember is the rotten apples smell and my urgent desire to get out of that town ;)
@Ryan Ryan, I'm looking at this, very nice pictures. I'll follow this, it's a fun weekly project and yes would be nice to have something like that here too. I don't think I can participate unless there's an iPhone picture category haha
I'm surprised actually how this stack here is not filled with design everywhere. I gues your explanation about ux/web people makes sense. I almost thought people were scared to get judged for their design skills actually
With design, "anything can be done, it's just more expensive" ;)

@go-me yes. Did you know one of my friend does some consulting in cellulose factory operation. And he said, that theres no longer a know how left on how to design a cellulose factory. So, all they have is old books. Now that they have made a industrial method that could make cotton like substance out of cellulose (with less impact on the nature, price at par and new areas to grow) its become a big deal again.

Wow you should make a new book out of that expertise then :P Then maybe you can roll in money like in the picture I posted above!
It's cool how some process never really changed, no matter how modern the technology is

@go-me the thing is the process could be made better its just that we dont know the problems that arise and why certain decisions were made.

@RobertDomonkos hello

7:10 PM
ok I see how it is. That's an interesting challenge for engineers
Hi Robert

gotta go to sleep

Good night!

later Joojaa
@go-me you want to play a game of 1 on 1 volleys against me?

ok I could try before I get back to work, or we just do this for fun as we have time for it ;) I'd like it!
Maybe I'll stop posting brooms and do this instead :P

7:30 PM
@go-me yeah pretty much in a one on one you agree to maximum time say 1 day or 2 days or whatever. Can also decide if we want to exchange the working files or just a finished jpg

I don't mind uploading the psd, but I must warn you, I'm very "generous" with layers and I don't always name them
@Ryan 1-2 days seems alright. I often need to take short breaks between projects, that would fit well in between 2 projects

works for me
you want to start or want me to?

Please start it ;)
Yay, that will be fun!

alright if I don't get it done while I'm at work (oops!) ill put it up this evening and ping you

Yeah no rush, you do this for fun and when it fits your schedule. It will be the same for me.

7:38 PM
right now I've got to figure out a way to illustrate how our laser works to lay people in a video

What does that laser do? Is it like laser for holograms?
xD

barcode reader

I see. Then it's probably going to end up in a step 1-2-3 kind of simple illustration

nah this is different and more complex
I need to demonstrate in a video the proper placement and explain the reason for the placement based on the angle of the laser
(among other things my current job has me also doing video production work entirely on my own)

oh yeah you said video too... Will be animation or like movie? Or both together look nice
hey that's cool if you do video production too

7:44 PM
That was the last one I made and first one that was entirely animated
all the others use live action entirely but for diagram ones like this its easier to do it with illustrations

That's very clear instructions. I see how it can be challenging but it's good you used both animations and footage

thanks, now doing one explaining the opposite direction basically, how far out the laser works from the side of the road. Our dealers really like the videos

I don't know if my techniques suck but I find it takes lot of time to do animations, it's hard to make things super precise

I don't know that I tried to make it super precise, just good enough to get what needs to be communicated said

You'll keep the same style I guess, that would make a nice series
I find timelines hard to manage, but I guess it's like layers when you get started with them

7:53 PM
it was tough the additional element of using Flash that's for sure, any changes were a lot more complicated to make

So these animations were done with Flash?

drawn in Illustrator, animated in Flash, imported to Premiere Pro. Captions and Arrows and stuff were done in After Effects, audio was done in Audition

Phew! I see I was missing a few parts. You must love the new subscription system of Adobe :P

best part is the license is good for two computers so I use the company subscription at home too :D

yes that's awesome. I love that new system too, very inspiring too

8:14 PM
@Ryan Need to go! Good luck with that video, I'll see you later and the volleyball game when you'll be ready!

later!
@go-me oh uh for type since we're gonna exchange .PSD I'm gonna dupe text layers and rasterize one so if you don't have any fonts you can use the rasterized one at least.

2 hours later…
9:51 PM
@Ryan Alright, or use TypeKit. But you know, no need to do extra efforts to change your files, in worse case I'll use one of my fonts.
