12:25 AM
I was holding out to see what Nexus was going to come up with, but that price for the Nexus 6 is scaring me away. Nexus 5 was really inexpensive, 6 is the same price that I'd pay for an iPhone
so I'll likely just get an iPhone 6+ now

2 hours later…
2:07 AM
^^ same

2:20 AM
Iv'e been happy with the 6 (not +). I did discover today that if driving and the phone is in my pocket, seems my bluetooth stereo has some difficulty maintaining calls. Works fine if the phone is not in my pocket. The 5 didn't have that issue.

10 hours later…
11:51 AM
hey room.

1 hour later…
1:04 PM
@vincent morning

hey @Ryan. how're you?

I'm good, and you?

quite ok. had a blast at SPIEL last weekend, now easing back into work
I'm starting to agree with you on some font-id Qs :/
lots of them show no effort whatsoever

what's SPIEL?

the biggest boardgame con in the world at Essen
played some great games and bought some as well :)

1:14 PM
oh thats cool
Now that my powerlifting competition is done I want to go check out that bar with board games, probably this weekend
What game did you buy? Any game you wanted but couldn't afford?

affording was not a problem, but there were a couple sold out, or sold out in English (as opposed to German or French)
We bought 'Legendary Encounters' (boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/146652/…) 'OWACON' (boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/159141/owacon), and lots of expansions, for Small World and Tash-Kalar mainly
we played Hyperborea, and that's one I'd really like to get, but they ran out of English copies

lol that would be funny if it was

hehe nope
although they did take pictures when we were playing
oh, did you end up being able to participate in your competition with your leg and all?

yeah, went well. Was a little painful but I just pushed through it as best I could. Hit a huge Deadlift which was cool too and got a lot of people's attention

ooh, nice! a PR?

1:24 PM
oh yeah. 600 lbs. Most I had ever done before was 555 lbs

wow, congrats! :D

thanks
Did you play Hyperborea with 2 or you had more? It really sounds good, wonder if the bar has a copy

it's only been out very short
we played with 4, but we only played the first three rounds After that we knew we wanted it, so went on to NOT find any :/
the board looks a bit daunting, but I found it rather easy to pick up

i think the board looks awesome :\
and yeah figured it was new since the gallery has pre-release photos up

ah, I'm rather used to stuff like that myself, but some people in my playgroup are easily intimidated :)

1:33 PM
You ever make tables in html/css?

yeah, some times. I tend to use them for, well, tabular data and addresses

i know in html5 there's now <th> -- if you're making a 3 column table with only 2 labels should it be <th>&nbsp</th><th>Product 1</th><th>Product 2</th> or should it be <td>&nbsp</td>... or something else?

that's a good question. I don't know the answer
My gut says <th>&nbsp;</th> because then you can still change the bg colour

hmm I guess that would be cleaner than using a first of type selector to get the first row

morning

1:40 PM
morning John

what's the space within the cell for?
does it not get rendered it it's empty or something

nope, would mess up the alignment

1:56 PM
hey guys. I get on the phone an the place's bustling :)
how's every1?

mmm coffee how I've missed you

@Ryan I don't think it matters much?
but I'd go with th

it might be nice to use th in case you declare a background-color or similar for the ths

@ZachSaucier thanks, that's what I figured and went with so far
@vincent wouldn't you just declare that with thead though?

2:13 PM
I ran a half marathon on Sunday
first time I've ran something that long, or ran for that long period

woah! good job. First one?

@Ryan that's another option, indeed
wow, impressive.

no training at all xD
decided last Thursday to do it

and you're still alive and can walk? :O

haha, ya. Played an ultimate game yesterday and was fine. Just a little sore

2:14 PM
I'd rather squat all day then run... at all... let alone a marathon. lol

finished pretty well though 1 hour 33 minutes, way better than I expected

did you run cross country in HS or something that you were able to do it with no training?

@Ryan most of it is genetics :P
but yes I ran some in high school. The 5k races anyway, didn't train much

I spent Saturday competing, Sunday sleeping, and yesterday doing Django tutorials

@ZachSaucier and youth.
:P

2:19 PM
agreed

nice Zach

thanks!

1 hour later…
3:26 PM
@scott a mask with [registration]? How would that work, and how would one use it?

3:38 PM
@ZachSaucier is there a way to make LI elements to be inline, only in the sense that they don't expand beyond their width. Still want them vertical though? Or would I need to change the markup to achieve that?

@Ryan what do you mean? You want your li's still listed under each other, but you want them inline? I don't get it?

@Vincent exactly what you just said, so what don't you get?

'inline' suggests side-by-side to me :)

I'm using JS to listen for an onclick of the element. I don't want someone to click on an empty bit of page off to the right and have it still change

ah, I get it.
can't you make the <a> within the <li> to be inline?
I know that I always have to do effort to make my <a>s actually fill my <li>s
and then listen to an onclick for the a?

3:54 PM
yeah that's what I was asking to see if I could avoid unnecessary markup

4:29 PM
@Ryan good question
@Ryan jsfiddle.net/5jrbvwfk if you don't need the dots. If you do I think you'll need pseudo elements using this approach

thanks @ZachSaucier checking it out now
@ZachSaucier nope, doesn't work for the purpose of JS it seems. I can still click off to the side
Thanks though, guess I'll have to use a different marup

not sure what you mean then
unless you click the text it's not firing for me

4:45 PM
what's the function you're using then?
document.querySelector('#eaglehills').addEventListener('click', function () {
	initialize(latitude=36.1932641, longitude=-115.2979199, pan_pitch=-9, pan_heading=98, pan_zoom=2);
});
that's what I've got with the id in the li in my markup

jsfiddle.net/5jrbvwfk/2 with list item number logged
doh
jsfiddle.net/5jrbvwfk/3 with working number logged :P forgot how to bind it before

5:15 PM
@ZachSaucier is the code I'm using no good for some reason?

I don't know what you're selecting
<li id="eaglehills">? if so it should be the same
could be that you implemented the CSS changes slightly wrong

yeah <li id="eaglehills">Eagle Hills</li> would be one
think I'm going to change from li to button though, think it'll be easier and look nicer

:shrugs: depend on how it's styled

working on that part now :)

1 hour later…
6:50 PM
UGH

:)
so there is life

@joojaa I hate when people say "ugh" it's one of my biggest peeves

@Ryan thats because you have the gene

gene?

6:53 PM
yeah the predisposition for pedantry in language
I personelly am having a pedantic moment with the rules of duplicates

oh, that is actually more true than you know

I mean technically im not supposed to re answer same question and mark them as duplicates. Horror not copy my old answer as such. But im really really tempted to copy edit a perfect answer. Besides the asnwer allready has 10 copies so why care...
@Ryan That's okay i understand, in a bit the same way as you understand my total and utter insanity that sometimes afflicts me when i go totally nuts and post mathematical formulae.... And go in the totally nutters department.

Like now I'm monologing. Pretty soon the hero steps in and foils my attempts at world domination.

for a while I thought I had Asperger's it's still pretty possible. I was never tested as a kid so would be nearly impossible to get an accurate, unbiased, diagnosis now.

Well my plan isn't actually that great but it might work
@Ryan Yeah its common in certain professions
Engineering being one.

7:00 PM
Architecture and Graphic Design as well.

There was a woman on tv that had severe aspergers... sche allways smiled even when depressed.

...and computer programming and law.

I'm a (soon to be) engineer! :D

well given that engineering is connected to Architecture and GD in the same ways as programming si connected to law its not a supprising combo
@ZachSaucier congrats... not worth the effort :P

Q: Any ideas on how to elegantly reuse old answers?

joojaaSometimes a valid question is asked that is a rehash of another question that was not properly handled, usually these questions have a many duplicate answers. I understand your not supposed to have duplicates in general. But sometimes the data of the answers is spread so thin that its hard to fin...

7:02 PM
@joojaa probably true

I teach engineering on masters level

but money

so i can parody the stuff

why aren't you active on the engineering SEs then? Don't like mixing work and helping people? ;)

@ZachSaucier Not much money in engineering here. I live in the land of worlds cheapest engineers

7:03 PM
@ZachSaucier does <caption> only function in a table?

I'm not sure TBH, never used it

@Ryan Yes

thanks @joojaa W3 seems to agree
I was trying to put it at the start of a list as well. Guess I'll use strong or something instead

it make sthe table sementical

@Ryan why not a header?
<h4>List header</h4>

7:06 PM
@ZachSaucier Well the reason is that engineering is hard, most of the GD questions are just so simple its silly. Anyway i used to be a 3d Animator... Besides its a bit too close to work, so it feels like is should get paid.

I'm starting to feel more that way with web stuff :P

@ZachSaucier Would there be a market for a PDE solver in your browser ala simulink?
i ported one yesterday form my old codes

@joojaa define "browser ala simulink"

Well its pretty easy to make a web service that does the few basic nodes of simulink in javascript. So youd have a block diagram and a reporting service in the browser. And you could share your sub blocks with the world.
So you could have integrator, sum gain and scopes easily made
whch could do mostly everything you need.
@ZachSaucier Have you used simulink?

7:22 PM
I have not

ahh...
so your going for what engineering degree=

computer systems, in my 2nd of 4 years

figures... but even you would need simulink, but i guess you dont deal with differential equations like most real engineering types

lol, thanks

Im not saying compurters systems are not real

7:27 PM
I'm in the same physics and calc classes as the rest of the engineers

Sure but physics is not the class where you learn real skills
Theres no money in solving differential equations

I don't understand your point

what you do is slap a dormand prince runge kutta solver and be done with it
So unless you do simulation in the physics dcourses they are just primers

yes, but I don't understand what you mean before that

See most, real, systems can not be solved analytically. Then you need a simulation tool.

7:30 PM
mmhm

The basic physics courses dont teach you very useful stuff. They prime you to understand the nest steps.

agreed

So i had 260 credits worth of applied physics
and 50 credits on primers
My biggest problem is that we need computer engineers to solve our computation problems, But they dont know physics. So its easier for me to become a computer scientist and computer engineer at the same time as it is to become a mechanical engineer

@joojaa hey, that's me :D (CS + CE)

Theres megabucks to be made if you can do stuff like FEM or Simulation + database stuff
But problem is FEM is a bit too involved to get into because you need all the solid mechanics stuff behind your belt.

7:37 PM
FEM looks interesting but difficult, hahaha

Its not

not what?

Its just thet you dont have the foundation to start
Not hard

take for example diffusion
the formula for diffusion liiks like:
du/dv =v* (d^2u/d^2x)
But hwat it really says is that if your connections are defined

7:41 PM
aww it's so cute @joojaa finally has someone that can understand his formulas. Unlike me, and @Scott, and everyone else. :D

hahaha

take x amount away from your intensity and give to neighbors and add the neighbors given data to yours
But i digress now we have overexceeded the topic

it's a chat, who cares :P

CFD Python: 12 steps to Navier-Stokes -> fluid simulation in 5 hours
@Ryan :)
@ZachSaucier One of the best things you can do to understand hard engineering sciences

@joojaa the thing is that I hate intro stuff. The classes bore the heck out of me. But these topics that you've mentioned will have me reading all of tomorrow after my physics test

7:46 PM
@ZachSaucier You need the foundations it just doesn't seem like that today. Its just taught the worng way around IMHO

I'm positive they're helpful, I just would like cool stuff mixed in

the guys teaching foundation dont know what your going into so...
And besides like i said it would totally make the differential equation solving obsolete
so it would make you not learn certain central theorems because you con short circuit around it.
