you can really get to know someone's dark side with those games
complain about luck?

mostly. I do think Settlers is too much of a luck-based mission

yeah
pretends to be strategy, but... meh

'd rather play something that is swingy in another way
that's why I like Small World a lot. Just last week, I played my SO, who at the end of one turn, occupied all of the map save three spaces. Yet, I won that game.

I need to play it

It's great, easily explained and genuinely funny
some of the combinations are zany. Flying Skeletons or Peace-Loving Ghouls can make my day

12:06 PM
awwww peace-loving ghouls :)
flying skeletons sound cool
of course said skeleton would need some dry muscle to hold itself together

hush

or ropes, or silvertape

some suspension of disbelief, okay? :)
lol @ silvertape

hah
suspension of disbelief, awesome

what are you working on atm?

12:12 PM
a software dev company, desktop apps for hospitals
but I 'originally' come from web
then got into interfaces, and ended up working for a microsoft partner - for now.

uh? but you don't code, I suppose?

not code-code, but most things are do are in WPF/XAML
the CSS of windows apps

ah, ok
large team?

only 1 designer, me
and about... 10 devs
but lots of salespeople, support... hospitals are not easy to deal with
everything needs to be spotless, there is medical risk associated

ack, that's quite the unfair disadvantage you have there, up against 10 devs
I understand. High bar.

12:16 PM
oh, they are under my command (no, not really)

are they... dev-devs or are they understanding devs?

very understanding, they trust me, the fools
I revamped a very VERY ugly-looking product
and it got great feedback
it wasn't a difficult job, the program had more than 10 years
do you do any programming?

lol

@Bakabaka really nice to see you in the running

not coding-coding as you call it. Mostly html, css and php
@RandomO'Reilly thanks, and hi there
to get my WordPress sites running
php looks really great to learn, I'm itching to create my own plugins. Just... the time.

12:22 PM
yeah... what about javascript or jQuery?
WP is a struggle
hi Bente :)

hi there - weird thing? it says I have edited a post 16 min ago, I was not even in the door 16 min ago

yeah, one of those is next. I find myself unable to do things I want without either, so I'll guess I'll have to
uh? Is your password secure?

(forget it.. but weird; second force refresh sorted it)

@RandomO'Reilly it's the other Bente, the one that logs in when you are sleeping. Seriously, it happened again today

lol
not worried about it

12:24 PM
you avatar here became active. It's like your phone/computer is sending "I'm alive" signals everywhere

but I am alive..
:D
hm, i will have to look into it

awake* :)

Maybe it's boblet. Acting from beyond the nickname grave

ohhhh nice theory

lol
nice
i think it might have something to do with my new OS
and some oddities in reminders

12:27 PM
I go for the boblet thing
must be that

hehehe
good thing I am not prone to paranoia

yet*
ah, got to show you the books!

ooh
right

eeh
12
that Line one looks amazing
worth putting on my amazon wishlist?

12:31 PM
yes
def

@Bakabaka long story, but someone gave me USD500 to spend on amazon

the cover design is so beautiful too, I just like to stare at it

yes! that was my initial thought too

oh wow
indeed
those are... gorgeous.

wwwwwaaaa! GBP300!!

12:33 PM
please take pics when you get them, please
what the...

first one reminds me a lot of old Dutch banknotes

woa. I got them from the library

hm.
usD200

@RandomO'Reilly and have you spent them already?

@Bakabaka it is wonderful!
the $500, yes
take a look here, and my geekness (in certain directions) will be established...

12:35 PM
I can only see 1 item there
I think it got cleared, or do I need to click somewhere?

christ
which one can you see?

I thought I was a freak, and then I met Bente
a history of GD

hm
hahaha

yeah, I only see that one as well
but I guess your preference goes to expensive, good-looking, well-made coffe-table books?

stupid; it is not longer on the wishlist - i see them though - because they have been bought
hahaha
no, not really

12:37 PM
...on design

well, there is a shitload on data visualisation, data handling, big data, visual language, graphic history,
an not the least: visual complexity
i am a bookbinder by first education; i rarely by coffee table books, they hurt far more than paperbacks

they... hurt?

can I quickly show you something for critique?

12:42 PM
be blunt

first issue: alignment
should war be smaller, more to the right?
the D needs to go

think maybe i would have tried more to the right
but then, i like asymmetry

art bigger?
well, they could be assymetric, top going up, middle straigt, down going down

i like the squigglyness of it, and the fact that it is not "deeply constructed"

12:44 PM
ah nice

How will it be displayed? Is the rotation part of it or was the paper a little crooked when you took the photo?

i would have cut off - or altered - the swoosh on the N in design

wait, Ii'll take a real pic

there's imbalance indeed, and it bugs me a little that the swashes on both the terminal N and R are mostly indentical

originally the t also went all the way to the right
it bothers me too now

12:47 PM
but I do like it :D

@Ryan no idea, i'm just playing with it
(it's for my blog artdesignwar.com)
(so it will probably be floating on the left)
so h has to go, redo D and check alignment

ah, gotta excuse myself... bike is ready

see y
'all later!

see ya!

12:52 PM
this is what bothers me. Those green ones should be closer to the same angle IMO

ahh I see I see

the blue isn't as bad except maybe the s in design could be a little shorter or the i and g a bit bigger
I like the lettering though, they're really nice.

i am not bothered about baseline

Calligraphy Quill?

no, sharpie

12:56 PM
personally, i like squiggleiness, contrast, juxtaposition

new version soon

the swoosh on the n in design is for me a little too much on the nose, thought the shape is very good. There is something a bit more alive about that, than the swoosh on the D. this because of the slight bend on the N. be good to have something like that on the D. calligraphy-ish
i have no problem with wobbly baselines; i think it is a requirement for something like this, it is an art form to get words to fit each other. war a little to the right, as it gets a little contrived fitting the W

uploading!

but i think it is class anyway. there is a "makers mark" there, it is hand made, and no meaning in making it too streamlined. a digital font could do that.

(it looks a little better live)
alignment all off again
I see it once I take the pic, but not before

1:02 PM
hehe

design is supposed to be flat, dammit
what do you think of this D?

i see no reason why the first loop on the W could not go over the bottom of the D, and likewise with r and g

ahh nice yes

personally, the D is too close to a standard calligraphy font
that it is leaning left i think is good, you could make the D lean left and the G lean right - gives "drama" and almost perspective
disclaimer: you do not need to take me seriously

i think its time for my coffee to be ready! thats what I think!

1:04 PM
:D

haha
modifying as we talk

hehe
Miss Random; the queen of SquiggleLand :D

haha

...or, of WobblyLand...

new version coming up
(last one and I set you free)
not as flashy, but more balanced I think

1:09 PM
ah, nice

thing in the n should be smaller, right?

I for one like that more as far as the baseline angles go. The W loop is really big now though
like my brain first processes it as an L before realizing its a W

ahh I see

(you could experiment by doing a loop on the N, and drive it down through the g, like the energy in the g), and I would not mind wobblyness in baselines
:D

1:12 PM
ahhaah

guys, this turning into a wiki-post? getting more useful by the hour graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/30083/…

haha yes
ok, last one, inked
enough for tonight, will continue tomorrow, but thanks for the critique, all excellent
(I like the deformed top r in this one, I need to re-do the "war")

that's way more balanced, @Yisela

there's too much space between design and war, and the a and r in war are awwwwful
but I can hardly keep my eyes open so I'll call it a day

g'nite

1:23 PM
nite!! thanks again!!

1:37 PM
aaaaarrrrrgh - the oatmeal is right, printers are sent from hell to drive us mad

printers and copiers are the bane of existence

2:21 PM
@Yisela The Pvar? :-) I'd say the loop seems to be there based on the concept that the A, D, and W overlap. It looks nice but I'd question if the overlapping is strictly necessary...and if it is, whether the loop on the W should be more pronounced than the one on the A.
As Art overaps on the D only, you could nudge war so it doesn't overlap the g, raise it a bit, weaken the loop and make it counterbalance Art a bit by being more to the left
Another possibility would be to drop the W overlap with the D and only overlap the G, then make the W kind of tail to the left as a clockwise analog to the Art's T loop curling counter-clockwise, and let the War's r end more succinctly

2:38 PM
Hack job to sort of show that direction:
(One could also tweak it around so it doesn't overlap at all of course, but presumably the style is supposed to convey some organic-ness by having some...)
I guess that's still curling counter-clockwise.

Q: How can I achieve effective handdrawn line boil?

d3vidI am trying to achieve a deliberate line boil effect in a pose-by-pose animation. Similar, for example, to the effect achieved in Dr Katz (I know this particular example was done with software rather than by hand). My process is currently: hand draw a pose trace second version of pose (with so...

I know this has been asked. Anyone remember it to locate?

A: Wobble a simple sketch to animate it

horatioHenrik's answer is a good method of actually achieving this, but for pure interest, I thought I would put a little information regarding Squigglevision which is, believ it or not, patented by the people who did the "Home Movies" tv show. Squigglevision Patent As best as I can tell, they make a ...

@HostileFork don't know how you remembered it but thanks

@Ryan Offhand I knew it was called squigglevision, looked for that
Used to watch a lot of Dr Katz. :-)
@Yisela P.S. you might also curl that right portion of the W down in a tight loop like you did on the left of the capital A so that it connects the stroke to the leading stroke in a for War. You're very close to a single stroke logic for each word.

4:37 PM
Hm, no actually I do not believe that connecting the W and the a can work. Perhaps the better idea is to break the A and the r, and lose the leading stray stroke on the a in war; raising the War a to be more mid-W to match the r in art.

Q: Description of tags on the tag page does not always start at the beginning

Bart ArondsonWhile I was looking through the popular tag page I noticed some inconsistent behaviour of the descriptive text below the tag. For example: The adobe-fireworks tag looks like this: This matches the text shown on mouse-over: However, the rgb tag looks like this: It misses the first f...

Q: I miss the site stats from Beta

ScottIn beta the site had stats in the right sidebar.... (from another beta site) I kind of miss those stats for GD.SE. I understand that the stats are imperative in beta and could possibly be, well, non-advantageous (is that a word?) when live. Not a big deal, but thought I'd mention it.

Q: Bug: Tag pop out is truncated by layout if question preview is longer

ScottWhen inserting tags, the pop out to show existing tags is truncated at the bottom of the content wrapper if the question preview begins to take up more space.... Meta: The longer the question preview, the more apt the tags pop out is to be cut off by the internal wrapper. Main site:

Q: Our site "blurb" a little ...well, measly

Random O'ReillyI noticed that the blurb for GD (you can see it here among other places) is a little measly. The problem I have is with the word trying: Q&A for professional graphic designers and non-designers trying to do their own graphic design We are not just tryers, we are doers, surely? Any chances...

@scott i am playing with my Astute plugins as per your recommendation, and they are class!

9:17 PM
you've probably all seen this, I just discovered it and I am fascinated: elections.stackexchange.com/#graphicdesign.stackexchange

I feel so itemized!

haha
yes
but the way it works is quite cool, I love how it loads and the design. Jin is a genius

afternoon

hi Matt!

hi @Yisela

9:22 PM
@RandomO'Reilly glad you're liking them... best AI money ever spent here. And I've purchased almost every plug in out there.

@Scott they need to pay you commission ;)

Err.. well .. uhm.... they don't :)
I do get stuff from Astute. But, even if I didn't I'd be recommending them.
I've purchased several Astute licenses in addition to some comp'ed licenses.

@Scott they are brilliant; I am very happy with them

Glad to hear it.

which one did you get?
@Scott do they work in CS5???

9:25 PM
Yes Gramps. CS3+ although CS3 and CS4 are only supported in part. But everything works in CS5+ They are very concerned with keeping things available in legacy versions.

so whats new with you scott??

@Yisela makes me want to nominate myself just to see my stats :)
Not much really... Waiting on the home closing.... other than that work as normal.

haha yeah, these are not that visible anywhere else!

Exactly :)
So, I've got a client that suddenly wants to enter a work-for-hire agreement :)
And silly client, they think my rates aren't going to change due to that.

work-for-hire!?

9:32 PM
@Scott why not?? you can do that and un-nomiate yourself, lol

you mean work only-for-one-guy?

I don't want to be disruptive Gramps. And that would be to a degree.
And for a company Iilan.

office?

No.. same working situation, just a legal redefinition of the arrangement. Basically they want to own EVERYTHING I do. That's what a work-for-hire is. Currently there is no work-for-hire definition which means I retain rights to everything except the final deliverable files.

hhh, it means rates X10 min

9:39 PM
@Scott how you going to handle that one?

I asked for a definition of "press ready data files"
If that menas native application files, my pricing will change
if it means merely press-ready PDF files, then things are fine
Turns out, I just heard back.. they merely meant the PDF files.
So I asked them to be that specific in teh contract.
There are a mountain of issue if they want native files... stock photos, fonts, etc all need to be repurchased for them. In addition, my rates increase if working files are part of the deliverables. So I would have had to open a conversation about data scope, deliverables, and expenses if they wanted native files as well.

would be nice if Acrobat allowed you to use pixels as a ruler..

Would be nice if Acrobat had a usable UI.

@Scott did you try to write? I mean WRITE
?

er... what?

9:53 PM
to write something
a book!
a story?

Not sure what you mean Ilan. I design, I'm not a writer.
Work-for-hire can include writing, but not for me. It relates to design work for me.

no, I mean, your verbalisation skills...
you could write a book about design :)
about clients
relationships

Oh, there's no money in books :)
It's a mountain of work for very slow returns. Publishers make WAY more money than the writers do.

for sure

ha ha
@Scott I see your logic!!

9:58 PM
but if one has internal intention it is a clue

I just don't see a point to spending all that time developing something for less than I make spending that time designing.
