12:00 AM
sounds really interesting

I'm assuming both of you are in the GD industry?

yeah. I freelance.. and have been in the industry for quite a while

yeah, kind of I guess, I do interface design, usability... but also a little bit of everything
I've had drastic career changes (at least two big ones), and I can tell you: It's usually for the best!

I agree. I've only ever advanced by leaps and bounds because I was forced to reevaluate where I wanted to be.

I'm at a weird junction where I don't know if I should branch out and try picking up a little bit of everything or just focus on one thing and get in depth with it.
I hope it shakes things up a bit, Yisela. It's weird not having a little bit of job security though, but I guess I should get used to that.
Did it dramatically change what you did, scott?

12:06 AM
well, you can work as something else too, as long as you keep looking for things you are passionate about
I'll be back in an hour

take care :)

From my own experience, focusing on one thing and getting excellent at it is best. When you've established that, you can always move on to something else. It's much easier to get employment/clients if you are an authority on something rather than a jack-of-all-trades.

bed time for me, cya all

I've gone from print production, to grunt labor print layout, to illustration, to writing, to teaching, to web design. I do a bit of everything anymore.
see ya Dominic

What's your solid one thing that you branched from?

12:14 AM
I started with a solid foundation in print design including everything about production. From there I was easily able to branch out into Illustration more. And as the web became prominent, I was able to learn those production routes as they were (and still are) developed.
In all fairness, my career has spanned the development of the associated software as well. So I've grown as the software has grown.
The software knowledge has been helpful, but I honestly don't know where I would start with that today. There's so much to learn.

haha, it really is overwhelming

I can imagine. I've had many a discussion with colleagues about where someone would start today.
when I started Photoshop was purchased on one single 3.5" 400k floppy disk
now it takes 1/3 of a DVD

1 hour later…
1:32 AM
If I started today, I'd probably go for web... lots of resources, a not too steep learning curve...
and it's probably easier to get freelance jobs (at first), compared to other areas

2:31 AM
Hello
Sup @adamschuld

3:11 AM
hello!
i have made this, I need a feedback about the color and appearance.
i know it's simple, not complex and that's what i am worried about.

3:52 AM
what's up!
and what is this functioning as Anuj?
@Anuj Two things that strike me as distracting are the really small, yet detailed elements and the imbalance of negative space, it all depends on what you are going for though.

4:18 AM
@AnujKaithwas I love it! It's looking great. The only thing that distracts me is the sun
and maybe... I'd try to make it more balanced (which does not mean symmetrical: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/9184/…)

4:57 AM
@all hi
@JohnB Haha. I know.

5:26 AM
Can anyone help me I am unable to apply wave to the lines. Here is the screenshot i.imgur.com/hD1BW0J.png

A: How to create a fabric pattern

JohnBA very similar question was asked not long ago: How to recreate this background in photoshop for use in a mobile app? The one you provided is a little different with some wavy lines added. I was able to create something pretty close by doing the following: Step 1: Create a document with the des...

@AdamSchuld I have been trying to achieve the same final output, I have gotten horizontal lines by defining the pattern and applying it. But as it is in my screenshot, the preview in wave still shows the white background instead of making the lines wavy :/

hmmm... rasterize that layer first
it looks like your applying it to layer effects which I don't think will work
You used a pattern as a layer effect as opposed to using it as a fill--- which I think means you just have to rasterize it in order for you to use the wave method
@rick let me know if that does the trick

6:13 AM
@AdamSchuld, hi, the image i posted will be for a login page for a website.
I don't get what you meant about the negative space/

6:26 AM
@AdamSchuld Rasterize option is disabled in the layer option in menubar

6:55 AM
@rick you can't filter a pattern overlay. You need to flatten the layer styles first. Add a new layer BELOW the existing layer. Then highlight the pattern layer and from the Layer Panel menu, choose Merge Down.

3 hours later…
9:35 AM
I did it finally. But I saved it and then again I dragged the image and then did the rest of the steps.
@AdamSchuld That didn't work, but thank you so much you both @Scott

10:13 AM
Hello Fellas!!!

10:27 AM
Hello Jack

3 hours later…
1:10 PM
morning

1:57 PM
Heyo @Matt_2.0 and now @Dominic

sup boss

Konichiwa..

this question still considered off topic with the edit you think graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/4935

(I'm running out of unique greetings)

1:58 PM
@Matt_2.0 yes, too opinion based

hehe can't watch atm I'm at work

well the question was still approved for edit

after 16 months of it not working, I have fixed the caller ID

did you buy a new one?

Yh I agree no way to solve that question

2:01 PM
no I called verizon and said "yo fix this"
the girl who always answered the phone doesn't work here anymore ...so now I have to
which is great motivation for me to fix the caller id so I can choose who to ignore :D

you lost your PA??

haha

helpful

lol. coffee not kick in yet?

2:07 PM
usually 11:00 it does

need a PA for that
you shouldnt have to be subject to such horrible conditions John. Someone should have your coffee made for you at work ready. You do to much... Hire an intern =P

I agree

are you a starbucker?

no, just a keurigger
or a wawaer if I am really striving for a kick
I don't think they have wawa around you

ya cause I have no clue what you just said =/

2:14 PM
it's a convenience store, there is one across the street

oh

high class convenience store, like the whole foods of convenience stores
only the best for me

good man
you never have had great coffee until you have coffee from a percolator

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
sup @AdamSchuld
@JohnB isnt there a google ping for stack?

A what

a message alert?

google ping?
I'm confused
like desktop notification?

chrome browser alert
@JohnB yes

ohh, yeah. Yours not working?

3:22 PM
nope
do you have to enable it?

is "Notifications" allowed?

thanks

@Matt_2.0 yep
(did that work?)

nope

oh
on the right I see "disable desktop notification"
and enable if I click it

3:26 PM
ok it looks like it was disabled

@Matt_2.0 test

yes
it worked

sweet

oh god what have I done

3:39 PM
hey john can we delete the flat question?

4:00 PM
@Matt_2.0 not during the on hold period

Ever been told you're a know-it-all?
I'm super demotivated right now

@Dominic amen
scott = AI; John = stack

Been working at this company nearly two years, slowly improving processes, and then one of the main employees tells me I've got an answer for everything and we're going to end up fighting over it

@Dominic sounds like a challenge to the death to me

Part of me wants to throw in the towel and look for a new job

4:04 PM
ya I know how you feel. sorta in the same boat
you guys are salary over there right?

As arrogant as it may sound, I actively dumb myself down for these ****s
No salary here, I work on a project basis and get paid on completion
just because he's been working here for 20 years and adamantly states there's no way to improve the company whereas I state there are plentyyy

is he the owner?

Nope I get on well with the owner (also my nieces godfather)
I give up on fitting in and trying to make people comfortable around me. I'm gonna give them the full unadulterated version, with all the big words and terms they won't like.

have you not communicated this to your boss?
ya but that will make you more miserable if you do that

It just happened, and he's also his nephew..
I've made serious effort to get along in the past two years, but no matter what they always resent that I work in the office while they're in the warehouse

4:13 PM
ya id move along

You know that thing where you choose not to point out flaws in someones arguments because you don't want to make them feel silly even though you know it's wrong.. well they choose to take the piss out of everything I say while I avoid doing it to them
It's just I have so much I wanted to do here

take it to your boss and see what happens then decide the needed course of action

Sorry, rant over! Thanks for listening lol

anytime man

I don't know how I'll broach the subject but I'll figure it out
hows your day anyway?

4:20 PM
same ole same ole. battling server issues and development

you working on your portfolio or a different project?

no Im at work

What do you do?

design and develop stuff for people

Q: Sprite Sheet Creation

J_TremainI'm manually creating a sprite sheet using Photoshop and many of the graphic elements have drop shadows applied. Given that fact, it's tough at times to see where the drop shadows begin and end. I don't want to set my guides too close and cut off parts of the shadow. Anyone have any tips on how t...

Q: How can I manually create a pixel perfect image sprite?

DominicI want to use one of the Adobe Creative Suite 5 programs to create an image sprite of all the small icons and images on my webpages. I've done it a number of times before in Photoshop but can't quite get every icon to be at the exact coordinates I intend them to be at. The last method I used w...

and nice! :D

4:30 PM
@Dominic Could be, I usually link the possible dupe in a comment and see if they comment back affirming that the link answers their question

@JohnB second

ahh I just reviewed it n voted to close as doop

hey anyone else realize today is the last day of July

that works fine too

oh yh it came up as a comment anyway

4:31 PM
oh yeah, forgot it did that

I voted to close it, too
I think I might comment to do it in css but then that doesnt answer the question

it is just a more basic version of what I asked
but no one actually gave a step by step answer on my one
not that I was asking for it

4:57 PM
I should really learn Chinese

是因為你出口到了國外的一切

oh thanks

or 是因为你出口到了国外的一切
translation: yes since you export everything to a foreign country
lol

well, the printing plate layouts come back with notes on them in Chinese

you need to learn the chinese word for up charge

5:02 PM
haha

I think @Dominic and I are going to boycott our employer...

I'll hop on that train

Hello all!

Hey @rick!

How are you doing?
I finally did your answer.

5:13 PM
I am hungry, how are you

You are from? What time is it there?

Eastern USA, it is 1:14PM

blah Im still stuck in 12:15 time
hi rick

it is inspection day for my car
I sure hope it passes or I'm in trouble

how so?
oh tag renewel?

5:19 PM
yeah

oh... sorry.. I wouldnt know about that. In the "country" we have a tire tax of 79 dollars a year and it can be mailed on =)

well, up here there is yearly inspection
I don't think I've passed the first time in the past 5 years

wow do you have to pay each time?

oh yeah

ouch thats a day killer

5:23 PM
and I know of a couple things that are potentially going to stop it from passing, but hopefully they let it slide
what I'm more worried about is the things I don't know about

what dyu drive?

a jeep wrangler

ewww.. mudding.. (no country there)
hard or soft top?

all of them
hard, soft, bikini
full doors half doors canvas doors

nice! lol

5:25 PM
no safari doors...yet

man.. pics or not true ;)
color?

black
it's my second one, a tree fell on the first one last year

were you pushing the tree with a tractor then?? ;)

only pic I have of both of them I think: i.imgur.com/yan4ybP.jpg
(truck not mine)

needs a lift kit ;)

5:32 PM
I agree
first one has a 1" body lift, 1.75" shackle lift, and 2.5" suspension lift

well that is a little extreme
those are like 40" tires haha

Hey guys I am new to this room and even to this graphic design site too.

welcome @Appu!

welcome @Appu

5:34 PM
I wonder what does beta mean that follows the graphic design.
Does it mean it is in testing phase?

@Appu it doesn't mean much at this point, other than we don't have a fancy layout for our site

which I hope is soon!!

it basically means there are other sites ahead of us in line to launch. Site launches are few and far between. Not a whole lot will change once we launch, except the appearance

@JohnB @Matt_2.0 Thanks for welcoming. And it it doesn't have fancy means? I feel it's looking beautiful when compared to SO which I have been a member for long time :)

@Appu All beta sites have the same layout

5:37 PM
Oh. I didn't know this.

freelance
by the way freelance is dead

it just started!

lol

Okay. Those are pretty cool too. cya later. Will keep visiting but I consider myself as a noob in graphic design and of course when it comes to photoshop and gimp even :D

5:40 PM
we're here to help!

Nice. Bye..

later

Weird that UX is out of beta and GD isn't
looking at the stats

they actually got a site design before they launched too

it's not the best custom stack design I've seen
I like the cooking one

5:49 PM
i would like and hope we get input on the site design

I need to design envelope stationary
how fun

for your work?

yeah

make sure you follow the design area and dont make a mistake like I did in my rookie days and design where the bar code goes..

wait where's the barcode go

I'll just wing it, what could go wrong

returned..
=)

first I need to battle the printer

what did you do to the printer?

well, it never cooperates with these sort of things
inkjet printer, not a person printer

6:05 PM
I remember my days as a prepress I made the mistake and whispered sweet nothings to the plate maker that wasnt working and my boss saw me.. that was ackwardness for about a week.

gj

gotta have fun at the office

cya

well later

oh, I read that as you were leaving somehow

6:09 PM
ha you pulled a matt.. lol
so my supervisor is out of town for a week and is turning 50.. wonder if I should decorate his office...

6:33 PM
@Yisela mentioned Elance once for freelance work. @JohnB dont we have a thread on this already?

2 hours later…
8:56 PM
hi Pearson!

hi

9:35 PM
hi Matt :)

@Yisela hows your day going?
also I know we discussed once about elance but didnt you tell me about another one?

I used freelancer for a while, but I don't like it AT ALL

whys that?

I've come across some scammers and spammers.. and lots of designers that are not actually designers

oh snap

9:43 PM
it's difficult to find good quality

sup @Scott

and because it's huge, and very competitive, the prices range from $1 to $1000 for the same job
I definitely prefer Elance

ya Ive seen some inda posts @ 5.00 an hour

also, freelancer is always trying to charge you for everything, they are quite unethical imo
they trick you into paying for subscriptions that you can't cancel so they keep taking your money
but again, this is my opinion and my experience

I did see elance mention the escrow but are you only getting the escrow fee?

9:45 PM
I don't understand

trying to figure out how they pay on elance
it mentions about a 9% fee but nothing along money transfer fees
I have a google account but thats another 3% fee

I've never posted a job, I was the one looking for them :)

no that comes out of the bid

I did post one in freelancer, got unrealistic proposals and when I tried to withdraw my project I had to pay $5

The quote submitted by your freelancer includes an 8.75% service fee for Elance. When work is delivered and payment made, we deduct commission and transfer the rest to your freelancer.

9:48 PM
8% is quite a lot!
but the quality is definitely better

ya also doesnt include where the put it. If its like some places you have to get the money sent to Google and thats another 3%

so what's this google money thing? is it like paypal?
I've never heard of it

yes better than paypal

link?

sorry meant Amazon, lol.. long day

9:51 PM
ah haha

was looking at google checkout earlier to see about implementation

it was actually possible, google does everything
wouldn't be surprised if they became the next currency center

@Yisela I'm not sure if this is true at all, but I go remember hearing that google is loooking to make something like paypal with the ability to send money via gmail... Or something

paypal blows
and welcome joonas

@Joonas that would be good!!
one very positive thing about paypal: Resolution Center
I had trouble with 'virtual money' from a game, and paypal was the only way I could ask for my money back
well, I'm still waiting for their answer, but at least they have that possibility

9:57 PM
ha they messed up my account big time
still battling it

really?
:s

one very negative thing about paypal: Resolution Center
they side with the customer every time, no matter what
so, depends on the side you're on :D

oh, I just checked, and they gave me my money back :D I love disputes!!!! :P

did you guys see this when it was a thing? businessinsider.com/paypal-violin-destroy-return-refund-2012-1

a friend paid over 3k for a scam offer, and he got it back too

9:59 PM
@JohnB wow

omg
