@Grubermensch A slight exaduration but not buy much for some Credit Cards

If you carry credit card debt, that's a problem. But credit cards have ancillary benefits over paying with debit or checks or cash.
Like building a credit score, rewards programs, and liability protection.

So you think CC are a required thing for everyone?

Not required, no. But the system is set up such that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages if you use them properly.

yeah basically if you pay it off each month and have a good one your cost for having a credit card (finance fees) are minimal compared to benefits

This is no doubt because if you use them improperly, it does happy things to the bank.

8:04 PM
usually cash back or rewards programs will basically offset the financial cost and the utility benefits (immediate cash source in an emergency, credit rating increase)are HUGE

True. I will not argue that. The rewards points and such are a good
If I remember as long as you pay off your card soon enough you don't get charged interest right?

@Aaron Yep. You usually have a few weeks IIRC.

right you dont pay any interest if you pay it off in full every billing period
you only get charged a small percentage finance fee

Hmmm. Still not sure if it is worth the hassle. But then again I live in a smaller city so maybe since there is less competition between banks the deals are not as good.

I mean the big ol credit card system is an impersonal way of getting credit vs the old way of having a relationship with a local bank

8:09 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith My bank told me I couldn't get one through them -.-
I don't have any credit at all I guess.

as in you grew up in a town, your family banked there, you bank there, you work at the local factory or something, you save up a nut and when you go to get a home loan they look at your life holistically
bank credit cards are rarer?
if you live in the US just get a credit card from some place like capital one
for your first one
and be VERY VERY careful
but basically you sorta trade up (even if you stick with the same company) as you build your credit over time
to getting credit cards with better and better rates and perks and larger limits etc.

And the interest rates come down, in case something bad happens and you end up having to borrow (but this is not a good place to be)

I might look into it a bit more. Still iffy though.

9:12 PM
@Aaron, @Grubermensch Sorry, I was asleep.

Happens

Did you get help?

not really

Okay, so what's the challenge?

I'm trying to figure out how to scale the bad guy at the end of Tribute for the FAE game I'm running this weekend

9:14 PM
"Scale" in what sense? For a variable number of players?

in the sense that it's a single adversary against two players
FAE doesn't really provide any guidance on how to build an adversary such that the encounter will be a reasonable challenge
it just says "make 'em like a player character!"
what I'm asking is should I give it more aspects, boosts, refresh, higher approaches, etc.

Hmm, okay. First, but probably not sufficient:

Q: Creating encounters for a DFRPG party

DForck42I've got a 2-person party and i'm having some difficulty with balancing encounters for them. It seems that what i'm making is either way too easy, or harder than i really want it to be (ie, they're either not using much of their stress tracks or they're taking higher consequences). I didn't see...

mmkay

Probably the most useful thing from that thread is the (not adaquately expressed) idea that losing isn't as bad in a Fate game.
Granted, you probably want to orchestrate a win in this particular context, but Fate in general is a lot more at ease with "impossible" conflicts because losing just makes the story more interesting rather than bringing it to a halt.

yeah

9:20 PM
Now, a more useful rule of thumb:
Grant mechanics in proportion to narrative importance.
This should be pretty easy. A Big Bad Villain should have more aspects simply because he's got more interesting stuff for you to say about him.
And an actual mechanical bit of advice:
Figure out how hard you want the fight to be on the Fate ladder, and add that number to the highest skill/approach modifier the PCs have. That is the boss's highest skill/approach modifier. Then work backwards to figure out how many milestones he must've gone through to acquire that modifier, which tells you about his Refresh.

should there be an adjustment since there are two of them and only one bad guy?

I don't have enough experience with different party sizes to say for sure.
I think that it might be better/more interesting to give him a few pre-prepared free invokes.

alright boosts
that's probably safest, since I could jettison them if I end up overpowering

Yeah, those. (I learned Fate from DFRPG, where they're called tags, so...)

So what's a typical fair fight then? Great opponent agains 3-4 great PC's for example?

9:29 PM
Free invokes are also interesting because the boss's power ramps down as combat progresses.
@mbriand Almost impossible to generalise, I think.
So much depends on context: how many Fate points they have, whether they're prepared, if their aspects will be especially easy to invoke...
My suggestion: don't worry about overpowering them.
They should have consequence slots available, and in a one-shot consequences are practically free.
Fate cares very little about balance in the traditional D&D-style sense, and part of that is providing the consequence system as a buffer to stay in combat.

yeah i'm not looking for d&d style balance

afk a bit; apparently our tap water is contaminated.

10:01 PM
@Aaron I don't know what 3pp is.
@Aaron Credit Cards are fantastic ways to build personal credit. The key is to only use them where you would normally use cash and to pay the bill off entirely each month. If you do not pay the bill entirely each month, they are - in fact - a trap.

@DampeS8N Third-Party Products.

@BESW Are you sure? I don't see how that makes sense for the question. I'd have to buy third party products for the shop, otherwise I'd have to make everything, right?

@DampeS8N In the RPG sense, that means buying stuff meant for D&D but not made by Wizards of the Coast; meant for WoD but not made by White Wolf; etc.

@BESW aaah ok.

For example, Paizo started out its Pathfinder line by making 3PP for D&D 3.5.

10:07 PM
@Aaron Yes, absolutely. I buy everything and anything that leads to better, more feature rich games. I don't care where it comes from. And I have no agreements with any companies so that includes any kind of non-illegal knockoffs too.

2 hours later…
11:48 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith Yeah, that was a moment I'd like more feedback on in the 5e room if you get a chance. I sort of took some cues from how I'd run it in a game like Dread (where it would be a separate pull for each part of an action)...but I'm not sure if the reward was sufficient (should it be a success or is advantage enough)
