eh. Its "news" and general information, and that is properly censorted. So meeeeeeh

told you!
i haven't linked the one about astronauts swearing or the "women's problems" one. both are great

The warning is good enough considering its badly photocopied ;p
I think she did a guest one for tom scott.

yeah thats how i ended up subbing to her channel

@JourneymanGeek Scott Manley!

!!who
ah yes

@djsmiley2k in Brazil they laugh at Windows Product Activation :P

3:00 AM
Hello!
@Burgi Damn... :P
Oh, I turn 16 in exactly a week!
@JourneymanGeek Thanks for the bounty!

@Rahul2001 I think your answer was good enough, and Its nice to have aibobot shed some rep for a good cause

:D
YAY! I'm in the 2K league now.

Bob
3:29 AM
floof
congrats @Rahul2001
now you can actually edit :P

@Rahul2001, congrats.

Bob
@allquixotic @Dog ^
Actually, speaking of @Dog... haven't seen them lately o.O

@Bob not after the last incident

Bob
:(
I'm not even sure what happened.

We regularly get questions from users complaining that their computer is slow but the CPU is hardly being used, and they want a way to use the CPU more. We regularly get questions from users complaining that their computer is slow and the CPU is busy close to 100%, and they want a way to have programs use the CPU less. Could we just suggest that these people swap computers and then they will all be happy?

Bob
3:36 AM
lol

@Bob he was a little sweary, possibly over voice recognition...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "a little sweary" ... doesn't sound very ban-worthy :\

wasn't a ban, was a kick.

Bob
I have no idea what happened :P

Yanno how he is ;p

2 hours later…
6:00 AM
@fixer1234 #1 is hdd 90% of the time.
hola

6:25 AM
Ahhh I feel illuminated...
Arabica coffee + milk + MCT coconut oil + organic butter...

Yuck, that sounds ... healthy.

6:58 AM
@satibel It's my breakfast. Part of intermittent fasting.

7:21 AM
Fasting? Quick, Gimme my endocrine disruptors ketchup and my hormone chicken nuggets.
(in case you still didn't notice, this is sarcastic.)

Intermittent fasting of my seatbelt.
Playing with it when police is not around.

As for me, I fast between eating....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Interesting strategy.

@Bob works well.

7:40 AM
I'm at my 7th chocolate-caramel-cereal candy since 8:00 x)
*8th

Ah chocolate is a fruit anyway.

@JourneymanGeek Well that's how fast is supposed to be. You eat your evening meal at 6PM, fast until after 12PM next day and then you eat how much you want until 6PM.

@Boris_yo unless you're a hobbit.... Or a normal person
I like breakfast.

@satibel You are taxing your liver. It can only handle so much sugar at a time. What it cannot gets carried to fat stores.
@JourneymanGeek Breakfast makes me lazy and taints my mind.
Morning is not for eating. Morning is to be at your best to get the job done.

@Boris_yo not sure skipping breakfast is helping then.

7:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek It does help. Digestion takes resources affecting your parameters, hence performance.
Intellect, perception, agility are affected.

@Boris_yo brains need food. Unless you're a zombie. Then food brains neeeeeeed

@djsmiley2k this is a different issue

Coffee I mentioned has exactly what it needs.
Bulletproof coffee. Heard about it?

Bob
sounds hard

the only food i didn't like while in sicily was the breakfasts
too many cakes and sweet biscuits
and no tea

7:54 AM
@Burgi how does a Brit survive tealess?

you pack your own teabags and a small travel kettle

I make my tea in a casserole.

morning

also I don't bag my tea, I buy it in 1kg packs

a casserole?
> A casserole is a large, deep dish used both in the oven and as a serving vessel.

8:10 AM
hey

Bob
ho

8:28 AM
Guys, can you please take a look at superuser.com/questions/1201928/…

8:45 AM
@Michael Why not just switch the language at runtime?

@Burgi Fancy French sauce pan.

Bob
9:01 AM
Speaking of French, multilingual songs are interesting youtube.com/watch?v=FxYpMR312Dg

@OliverSalzburg because both Windows and all software would need two installs, creating a massive profile which would take way too long to load when pupils log in

@Michael Well, if you dual-boot, then you need two installs
If you switch the language at runtime, you don't
And rebooting to switch between languages will take quite some time as well
And you will have to administer two OS installations instead of one

If I dual-boot, I need two different possible profiles per student, of which he only needs to load one. Via runtime it would be one extensive profile, or am I missing sth?

@Michael No, it's the same profile. You just change the Windows display language

Does software automatically adapt to that new language?
And how would you have pupils choose their language when they enter the classroom?

9:13 AM
Ah, good point. That's probably very application-dependent

@Burgi Carbs and insulin-spiking sugar in the morning? Not good. Crash will come fast. Morning is for protein. Leave carbs for early evening.

@Michael I'm not sure what the fastest way would be. But the usual Windows way of doing it exists
But I can see now how that might not be ideal for a classroom environment :P

@Boris_yo i normally have cereal and toast
and tea

@Burgi Is tea crucial?

yes

9:22 AM
@Burgi Must be boosting intellect... I need to try it too.
Always wondered how brits are intelligent and polite. Not a secret anymore.

lol

@Boris_yo Most Brits are neither intelligent or polite.

@DavidPostill SSSSSH!!!!!!!

@DavidPostill They are depicted as such on a mainstream...
Should I believe you or mainstream.
I know you are controlled opposition. You are all the same to me!

@Boris_yo try jumping the queue in the pub...

9:26 AM
I will stand on my own. Autonomous and independent and you won't control me.

@Boris_yo You are clearly watching the wrong UK TV shows :)

Dang... Lost my tinfoil hat. That what happens usually...
@Burgi I will book flight to UK. What is the best time to jump the que in the pub?
I hope flight ticket prices aren't soaring for such fun...

8pm on a friday night

@Burgi Hmmm SSH... I see what you did there...
Are trying to communicate with David through secure protocol so I won't understand you?

no i was trying to keep him quiet and let you keep thinking we are all nice people

9:29 AM
I live for a few years in real England... and well...

@AndyK "real england"?

e.g outside of London

whereabouts?

my mates called it that way Real England
Oxford

nice place, i liked it

9:32 AM
it is
I miss the town
it is really quiet

@Burgi So what will happen to me if I jump the crowd in a pub in UK?

@Boris_yo It simply is not done.

@JourneymanGeek Boromir?

@Boris_yo depending on the pub you may either die or get shouted out

@Burgi Not much civilized as I hoped.

9:33 AM
"One does not simply cut the queue in a pub"

nods

Bob
> Hosting.UA (Ukraine) very economical option in Ukraine, unmetered. The building has already been set on fire twice.

@Boris_yo If one behaves like a barbarian, one gets treated like one
@Bob 0_0

@Boris the last time I did that on a bus line, an old lady sternly reminded me to not do so...
@Journeyman exactly

9:35 AM
@Burgi I never had the occasion to see Boomtown when I was living in England

boomtown?

Manchester
one of my mate was from Manchester

ah

in the 60's it was called boomtown

the capital of the north :)
lol

9:36 AM
A boomtown is a community that undergoes sudden and rapid population and economic growth, or that is started from scratch. The growth is normally attributed to the nearby discovery of a precious resource such as gold, silver, or oil, although the term can also be applied to communities growing very rapidly for different reasons, such as a proximity to a major metropolitan area, huge construction project, or attractive climate. == First boomtowns == Early boomtowns, such as Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester, experienced a dramatic surge in population and economic activity during the Indust...

@AndyK One does not mess with the old ladies.

Bob
O_O
this is so incredibly dodgy

@AndyK That thumbnail reminds me of H.A.A.R.P...

@Bob Nice :D

@JourneymanGeek Or gets lady's bag in their face?
@OliverSalzburg I want to buy tinfoil hats wholesale. Know reputable merchants?

9:45 AM
Just make your own
It's cheaper
Also safer. As the foil you can buy in stores is often contaminated with thetans

@OliverSalzburg It would take me months to make them DIY for a wholesale distribution...
Plus, how do you insert Thetan into tinfoil?

@Boris_yo The Thetans insert themselves into the tin foil. It's part of their takeover strategy.

10:07 AM
@Boris_yo assuming anyone ever knows.
@OliverSalzburg its aluminium.
Its not tin.
now, THIS is the stuff.
Unless the 0.1 percent is thetans

@JourneymanGeek As every fool knows tin foil hats are not made from tin they are made from aluminium
A tin foil hat is a hat made from one or more sheets of aluminium foil, or a piece of conventional headgear lined with foil, worn in the belief or hope that it shields the brain from threats such as electromagnetic fields, mind control, and mind reading. The notion of wearing homemade headgear for such protection has become a popular stereotype and byword for paranoia, persecutory delusions, and belief in pseudoscience and conspiracy theories. Foil hats have appeared in the films Signs and Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder. Note that "tin foil" is a common misnomer for aluminium foil; packaging...

@DavidPostill on the contrary, the illuminati wants you to use aluminium foil hats

@BenN It seems there are a few custom cmdlets around that'll resolve a local SID from a remote machine.

@JourneymanGeek Good catch

It amplifies the theta waves man.

This really has to stop

10:36 AM
@Bob at 800euros per machine, they have an ROI of about 3-5 years depending on the price of their internet access (assuming this is a shared 1gbps).
though this is probably a bamboozle.

> Unmetered 100Gbps in Nigeria
erm. That's like, the whole country right? ;p

"Nigeria fastest download speed in the last 30 days: 503.7 Mbps"

@JourneymanGeek That's the hookup. The server is running on a 100Mbit NIC though

it seems that their backbone is at 10TBps

Bob
@satibel 800 euros? where?
are we seeing different pages? o.O

10:48 AM
@OliverSalzburg oooh, 1Gbps u/d unmetered refers to the LAN.

Wow, unmetered LAN
We also run an unmetered LAN in our office
Sick speed yo

> TOS: We're not responsible for having your mind blown by this incredible speed.

@Bob from their specs, 1tb m.2 ssd costs about 600€, add 200€ for misc hardware, that's 800€

Bob
ah

me? saying inappropriate things? noooo, where did you see that?

10:52 AM
@satibel I SEE ALL!

:36934957 my hair is faaabulous.

lol
How about your glass? It might need...
@satibel assuming its "6 people a disk"
or there's even servers

not as long as dave brown though.

connects you to a large brick
lol

Bob
@JourneymanGeek see, what confuses me is the thing on the left links to a different supposedly unaffiliated site
the thing in the middle ... links to newegg?
what's going on o.O
or maybe you're supposed to order via irc, idk... don't really want to find out
I suspect I'm happier not knowing

10:59 AM
Yes you are.

if I had a 1g/100mbps fiber access, I might run VM servers/rpis on it, and make people pay 1€/month.

Bob
@satibel eh, you can already do that, just grab something cheap (scaleway? :P) and resell
it'll be more performant than rpis anyway

@satibel I got 300/300 + IPV6 ;p

Bob
the hard part is the infrastructure (managing payments etc) and dealing with abuse
oh and of course getting ipv4 addresses

11:02 AM
hey, if you need a small server for like ts and minecraft, there's no really cheap option.

eh. Define cheap.

@Bob fuck addresses, open different ports.

Some of the scaleway/online stuff's rediculous.

@JourneymanGeek 1€ or less

@satibel or just tell people to connect into a VPS :p

11:03 AM
because 3€ is too expensive :p

Bob
@satibel Easy. $5/year gets me a cheapo openvz VPS

@satibel I think I did 15 usd a year for a container VM

Bob
a few more options at $10/year or even $15/year
and of course they all suck
@satibel "small server" and "minecraft". lolno.

switched over to 3.50 a month I think, cause I needed more ram.
oh

well, then, fuck that, I'm eating a banana

11:07 AM
@Bob which reminds me. Matrix does voice chat.
and maybe video ;p
apparently needs you to set up a turn server tho.

Bob
@satibel eh, then you're most definitely not competitive
there used to be that real cheap ipv6-only vps

@Bob which is actually useful for web hosting

Bob
ah yea lowendspirit lowendspirit.com
> €3.50/yr
O_O there's one at 4.50 USD / year in australia

@Bob $0.86/mo oh, well.

Bob
which is especially fun cause I think only one ISP here does IPv6
@satibel 3.50 EUR/year is well below 0.86 USD/month

11:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Haha! They intentionally mislead us to gain control of our mind!
@OliverSalzburg What is this?

@Boris_yo full page ad.

@satibel Does it ask for email?

@Boris_yo Newsletter ads. They seem to become more and more popular
Very annoying. I don't understand why people do that

11:45 AM
So, I have a software/hardware problem, but I'm not certain whether it's right to ask about it as a question on the site since it seems like sort of a "guide me through this" thing. I have a Compaq Windows 7 laptop acquired from an acquaintance back home (he sells flea market stuff). I'd like to use it as a portable machine for playing Steam games, but the machine seems to grind to a halt within a few minutes of trying to install updates. Is there a good route for moving to a clean OS install?
The machine didn't come with install disks, and I'm not certain where to look for the partition where OSes are installed on laptops.

@FuzzyBoots is there a sticker with the key?

I have a Proof of License sticker on the bottom, but it's very faded, so I can't tell if there once was a key on there.

ah, this gets less fun
there's usually a tool for making restore disks. That's your best bet.
OH
I've never tried it but...
In theory
joshcellsoftwares.com/products/advancedtokensmanager should let you backup and restore your activation. You'd still need to get proper windows 7 media from somewhere else tho

I believe I have Windows 7 discs at home. I just need to dig them up. And... at work now, so I guess I'll have to wait on that. :)

also, consider replacing the hard drive. SSDs make a magical difference in performance ;)

11:54 AM
Hiren's Boot CD has a tool to get the key, though I dunno if it works on win 7.

Problem here is OEM keys are SLP

also, you can get the win7 iso from MS

your usual tools won't usually work

you can still activate by phone, I think.

You need a key
where do you get the key from when the sticker is unreadable?

....
@satibel I linked the actual site for that XD

Currently downloading the Josh Cell software thingy.

@JourneymanGeek not the same :p

FWIW, I did verify that this was not a case of a laptop "from off the back of the truck" although it was a bit dicey when I found that I still had someone's login information in the browser and when I contacted them, they voiced confusion over where their laptop had gone. Turns out they did sell it, but it was a year or two ago, and they had since been using another one.

lol
I didn't assume that. I prolly shoulda ;p

12:13 PM
Yeah... I didn't want to countenance it because I bought it off of a childhood acquaintance, but he did go to jail for a bit for stolen property a few years ago. Unfortunately, he has a bit of mental retardation and he's easily led astray by people who claim to be his friends.
Ah, and I have a product key!

0_0
if you're really lucky it will be a retail key and you can both confirm its valid and download a new ISO

Darn. It's coming up as not valid, with one of the possible results being that it's pre-installed.
I guess my next step might be calling up Compaq customer support...

Damn it.... Windows 10 Creators Update and they STILL haven't fixed the extremely fragile ntuser.dat thing, where looking at your computer wrong corrupts your profile
my dad's PC has a corrupt profile now and it's not clear how to repair it

@allquixotic my phone has this bug with "economy mode" where if I shut it down and start it with less than 15% battery, it will not unlock and say the profile is corrupted.

@satibel O_o

12:25 PM
android 6.something

ok, but this is Windows 10 I'm having a problem with :P
I've finally figured it out
iOS is for idiot users like my dad who would break it if the OS let him do anything resembling an unsafe operation

@allquixotic 0_0

now how to make him run iOS on his main desktop... hmm

I've never had that

@JourneymanGeek I had it once, and he's had it twice

12:26 PM
Local account?

apparently it's somewhat random and his disk isn't the most immune to corruption ever
@JourneymanGeek Microsoft account

SO strange

@allquixotic use deepfreeze instead?

Thank you, everyone, for your help. I'm going to try to generate Compaq discs off the partition. Wish me luck.

12:28 PM
@allquixotic I was about to say my dad has a cheapo chinese SSD, then I realised its a local account ;p

The ntuser.dat file is your HKCU registry tree. They used to keep a .bak file of it but new Windows seems more resistant to repair than old Windows in that respect
Would be awesome to have an automatic git repo of ntuser.dat
Commit every 12 hours

It's only a 3 MB file for my dad, so it wouldn't be that punishing to keep many versions of it; better still if the binary diff algorithm can capture subsets of changes

I just do a full daily backup
and I think veeam does some sorta incremental thing

Microsoft says you run into ntuser.dat issues if you have a virus scanner but he's just using Windows Defender
Thank god, too, because he used to run McAfee until last year
Why anyone would inflict that upon themselves voluntarily is beyond me

12:35 PM
cause they don't know better
and need an AV

Hmm I wonder if the problem was related to some ntuser.dat-GUID-.regtrans-ms files in that for
@DavidPostill that's only for HKLM hive
The damage for my dad is HKCU which is stored in user profile ntuser.dat not config folder

another solution would be to use a live distro (or win pe), and save his files to a nas.

Getting access to the user profile is actually easy, because it creates a temp profile for him each time he logs in, and the temp user has admin rights. So it's trivial to go in and read files
He'd lose any info stored in the registry that way though

12:52 PM
> Sauber are close to a deal to run Honda engines for the 2018 season, replacing current supplier Ferrari.
WHY????

They weren't Sober when they did this? :p

@allquixotic Is the actual hive corrupt, or just some data in it?
You can try mounting it to check

what does everyone think of the wiki-tribune thing?

Which?

@BenN in regedit? Will have to try it later if the system restore attempt doesn't fix it

Yep
If you can poke around in it, the hive itself is fine and you might be able to finagle the data in some way(?)

hint: powershell?

Mounting a hive in PS would be something of a mess, but I guess it's possible :p
You'd need P/Invoke; the regedit approach is what I'd go for unless I really needed automation

;)

1:35 PM
@OliverSalzburg In other words - email opt-in popups?

Bob
hm

@Boris_yo Well, these newsletter ones fall into a specific category for me, as they always pop up as you enter the website and they always try to get you to sign up for their newsletter

Bob
getting a 960 PRO would be waaaaay overkill but oh so tempting :P

lol
You also need m.2 for that, no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have M.2
It'd take away two lanes from my PCIe x4 slot (shared) but I'm not using that slot anyway
Basically... a 512 GB one would be in the realm of $400
I could get a (cheaper) 1 TB SSD for less than that :P
That said, my primary 850 EVO is doing fine
I'm just the tiniest bit concerned about TLC after the issues with the 840 series :\
(and again wish I could've used a checksumming FS)

1:43 PM
@OliverSalzburg I hate to tell you the bad news but collective consciousness slowly transitions to autonomy using off-mainstream methods to attain self-sufficiency and financial independence.
It slowly started in internet marketing industry but then it got out very aggressive. That industry constitutes majorly of people who are willing to sell their souls for a quick buck.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek actually ruens out it doesn't share with PCIe slots. But it does have a weird relationship with the SATA ports.

-> reading blog posts for money "we're gonna be rich." -> 10cents an hour.

Bob
> *2 When the M.2_1 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 1 will be disabled.

*3 When the M.2_2 Socket 3 is operatin in PCIe 3.0 x4 mode, SATA ports 5 and 6 will be disabled.

oh, those sata ports are probably on another chip

Then it started on YouTube, although people got smarter and we have "authorities" fighting each other's bullshit there. Those who hold trust, hold loyalty of subscribers that they depend on. Websites? More and more websites are implementing email capture mechanisms to gain following.

1:47 PM
you have that sata express thing?

M.2 ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek No, they're all Intel :P
@satibel I have that too, but that's independent of the stuff above
@JourneymanGeek just checked, all mobo ports 0 to 5 are off ICH8 (PCH)

Ok, that's odd then

Hello!

@Bob aren't port 5 and 6 on sata-e ?

1:53 PM
Hm, am I supposed to reject this edit if the only thing it does is capitalize two letters? superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/648756

Okay, thanks.

Bob
@satibel Wait, no, this board doesn't have SATA Express
I think when I was buying it I looked at one that did have it but since it shared with the PCIe slots I wanted to use I passed it up

youtube.com/watch?v=pyIXR3s8OtY youtube just suggested this...
Its an interesting instrument

Bob
2:08 PM
...dammit
@JourneymanGeek I was thiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to getting that XC server. But missed it in the time taken to create an account and then enter payment info :\
probably should've done that first. whoops.

Bob
they had two in stock that I just happened to see when I refreshed
that timing O_O

2:52 PM
local craig's list : selling toughbook 100€ works well... missing motherboard,cpu,ram, and hard disk.

@JourneymanGeek Cool!

@satibel ._.
works well other than that?

it's also missing some connector protections.
but "in good aesthetic condition"
