12:00 AM
@Burgi lol pretty much
a lot less work here on a night shift than the last night shfits I did
which was monitoring for Severn Trent... that was hellish

I am seriously considering Ryzen for tax return build :-)

DAFUQ! My new HDD, when in the USB enclosure, works on Linux but not Win8.1
I'm sensing a new SU question coming soon...

is it formatted in one of the multitude of linux formats?

No, NTFS. But it's and Advanced Format (4kb sectors) disk.

bedtime

12:06 AM
sleep tight

Google is the reason we can't have nice things:

This is the reason Apple has shifted to iPad Pro and calling it not a pc: wccftech.com/mac-ransomware-locks-data because good'old MacOS has ransomware lol

@Ramhound but ehrmagerd macs have no viruses!!!!!!!111!11!one

@Ramhound The point is that Google depends on the trust of its users. If Google cannot be trusted to be a safe steward of users' data, people will take their business elsewhere. This is why Google has been pushing the envelope on cryptography ever since the PRISM scandal.
Jul 26 '15 at 13:26, by DragonLord
Chrome is very, very aggressive when it comes to security. Google is probably doing this for business reasons: if it can't secure user data against government actors, users will lose their faith in Google very quickly. Hence, Google considers establishing itself as a leader in Internet privacy a top priority, despite the fact that its ad-based business model utterly relies on user behavioral tracking. Users trust Google to be a safe steward of their personal data, to not leak data out to unauthorized third parties, so they can't afford to do anything less. — DragonLord 5 mins ago

12:15 AM
would windows 10 chkdsk run under windows 7?

Google wants people to trust that it will not do bad things with the data they collect, chief among them being government interception.

i'd appreciate it if anybody can send me a copy of the chkdsk executable for win 10
like on ge.tt
i heard it's better than the win7 one. I tried running the win7 one on a hdd and it hung at 12%. So i'm hopin the win10 one will get further.

12:26 AM
Wasn't SHA1 discontinued anyway?
Oh, I suppose only for HTTPS certs...

Jan 30 '15 at 17:27, by allquixotic
@DragonLord that's basically how I feel. it's unfortunate that Google has painted an enormous target on their backs saying "HACK ME" now that they have so much data collected on people... everyone who has a reason to want lots of personal data, browsing habits, search terms, etc. is gonna go out of their way to get to that data.
I couldn't have said it any better.
That's why Google is doing stuff like this.

Bob
12:59 AM
@barlop Are you sure it doesn't depend on other parts of the system?
IIRC the online scans depend heavily on the NTFS implementation

1:12 AM
sigh
My phone has stopped giving me LTE since the update. I'm on HSPA+; could be a glitch with my phone's software or an issue on AT&T's end.
A customer service call did not sort this out as LTE is enabled on their end.

1:27 AM
...might be an issue with the phone's software.
I guess I'll live with it.
HSPA+ performance on AT&T is decent anyway.

1:53 AM
Mornin'
@ThatBrazilianGuy @djsmiley2k @Burgi got your points. Will make repo private/delete it.

...it sucks that you were in bed at the time.

Eh, idk, the info on there is pretty vague, but okay...
Do you guys think that this can seriously come back and bite me?

What was the problem?

@MichaelFrank github.com/R2K1/casanova/blob/master/README.md This was just a joke but...

Well I guess if TBD knows your github username it might cause trouble. :P

2:05 AM
Yeah, short-term that's the worst-case scenario.

If you're not naming names, all anyone can do is speculate.

@MichaelFrank Eh, she doesn't. And she knows about all the past stuff. I think I'll just ask her if she has any problems with it?

@Rahul2001 I wouldn't offer the information willingly... perhaps bring it up as a conversation topic like "Hey... did you ever write about your ex's?"
But hey, it's an amusing use of GitHub, so +1 :)
omg your rickroll wifi is amazing.

@Walmart "I look forward to many more of your great answers; you should answer more often" I have no idea the reason you think I don't answer questions.
Perhaps I will start to just answer questions with bounties....
since my current 437 answers seem to be overlooked

2:23 AM
@Ramhound you do comment a lot :p

I answer questions that interest me. Yet another "run as administrator" question doesn't interest me, doesn't me, I won't briefly explain how a process permissions work by default,
Could just drive by flag as a duplicate I suppose...
Looks like I am being serial upvoted by somebody got up votes on answers to very low volume questions all within a short timeframe....
<sigh>

You've answered this question with a comment...
No; There isn't; There are specific functionality and settings you can only adjust in that application so that's like asking how you can disable control panel. You can prevent a user from changing their settings but launching the application itself can't be blocked — Ramhound 36 mins ago

*mean

Bob
but... but... I'm the admin!
That's the admin account!

@Bob Time to switch users!

2:30 AM
@MichaelFrank Your right so I deleted the comment

I ran into exactly that issue the other day, except my error was "The logon attempt failed."

Bob
@MichaelFrank ...if I could remember what other users there were, if any...

Enable the built-in Administrator

Bob
@Ramhound ...how, exactly?

you can then change the password to the same password, then set it so you have to chnage it, this (I believe) keeping any encryption in tact

Bob
2:31 AM
Given that I currently have approximately zero access?

@Bob Oh, I assumed you were attempting to log into a server with a priviledged account that had an expired password.

Bob
I'll probably have to ditch the instance :\
@MichaelFrank That's what I'm doing!

Are there two different accounts? ala Bob and BobAdmin

blah. Played a bit of the AotS tutorial. I have next to no experience with RTS games, and have tended to fumble around the few times I've played one.

cant do it remotely at this point. Good idea to always have a "password never expires" account :-$

Bob
2:33 AM
@Ramhound Yeaaaaa... I thought I turned expiry off...

It'll probably take ages to get a feel for it.

ummm
this a Azure VM right?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Nah, this one's actually just an Azure VM. Didn't feel like making multiple accounts.
@Ramhound Yup. Turns out the password reset via Azure actually worked.
I'm shocked. Mostly because I never installed the VM agent and it already gave me a couple errors relating to that...

@Bob Okay well in that case.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes; That happens on Linux and ssh

Bob
2:34 AM
> Successfully reset password
1:32 PM
Successfully reset password for virtual machine ''.
Failed to restart virtual machine
1:10 PM
Failed to restart the virtual machine ''. Error: VM has reported a failure when processing extension 'enablevmaccess'. Error message: "Cannot update Remote Desktop Connection settings for built-in Administrator account. Error: The specified directory object has not been modified ".
Failed to start virtual machine
Failed to start virtual machine ''. Error: VM has reported a failure when processing extension 'enablevmaccess'. Error message: "Cannot update Remote
so... ok, it somehow worked :P
@bwDraco Apparently it's better now, but the AI in AotS was ridiculous and the campaign ... difficult. I gave up some 4 missions in and only play a bit of multiplayer now.
@Ramhound still want that chkdsk? :P

That's a whole lot of "Something happened, or maybe didn't happen." style logging.

lol
@Bob Escalation fixed these issues for the most part, from what I've read.

Yeah Linux/Windows acts differently with user accounts with expired passwords with remote access but with being a local login Your offered to change it. Unfamiliar with Azure password process so <shrugs> only ever done VSphere/Workstation/Hyper-V

Since you're talking about RTS games. Anyone tried out Grey Goo?

Bob
oh. whoops. I did set up a toor account at some point

2:37 AM
The problem is that strategy games of this sort, especially on a scale this large, are just not my specialty.

@bwDraco You might enjoy the concept that Halo Wars 2 is bringing.

Bob
@Ramhound It's weird, because sometimes I can change it via RDP but not other times.
Might depend on if it's domain-joined.

The game's UI is a bit hard to navigate.
I guess I'm not the only one who's bad at RTS games:
Nov 2 '13 at 23:36, by Jimmy Hoffa
@allquixotic I hate RTS. All that wandering the map clicking on things quickly. Plus I've always been terrible at them, just like checkers and chess; never won a game in my life. ever. And monopoly, fun in theory, but in practice It's just an hour long game involving me losing and not understanding why

@bwDraco To be fair, that was 3 years ago. He might be great now.

Well you can chnage it remotely if it isn't expired or you should be able to?

2:49 AM
@Ramhound Agree... you do have a "higher" comment rate than answer rate; if technical questions don't interest you as you state, then perhaps it's time to consider running for President and get out of the IT field since you're at a such high level. You're on SU a lot commenting that I wonder how you get any work done at time.
I notice your activity and saw this comment on such a simple a easy question that I was wondering why you didn't answer; which you should do more often to contribute to the community even more since you're around so often--I'd like to see that sir. If you ran for "Cheet and Chong", Mr. Bill Clinton "I didn't inhale" President, I'd vote for you Pedro!!

@Walmart You can downvote answers. :)

Is there a query to see the stats on that as well from Data Explorer or something?

It wasn't ramhound

Uh-oh Cloudfare, leaking memory everywhere!

Bob
@barlop still need it?
@JourneymanGeek glurk. the gravatars... -_-

2:57 AM
lol
Gotta go to bed soon... got a big photo assignment tomorrow.

Cloudflare leaking customer HTTPS sessions - You should all read this: reddit.com/r/programming/comments/5vtv16/…
2

AotS is very mentally draining. I can't afford to start another session.
I suspect my autism is playing a role here. I have trouble thinking about the bigger picture.

Bob
@MichaelFrank holy fuck. that's incredible. and terrible.

@Bob Best comment: Cloudflare pointed out their bug bounty program, but I noticed it has a top-tier reward of a t-shirt.

...that might impact my ability to get a job and could be a very good reason to play.

3:02 AM
Also, the SHA-1 collision doesn't seem so big anymore ha

I'll see if I can carve out some time to at least play a few skirmishes a week.

Bob

@Bob looks like we will have to keep those HUmans around a Leetel bit longer, as we are nowhere near any working self repair features :-)
AKA did you think it would fix itself :-)

@ThatBrazilianGuy if your question dosen't get an answer, let me know. Aibobot can bounty it.

3:10 AM
@bwDraco Oh. I wasn't aware, it puts some things into perspective.
@JourneymanGeek <3 <3 Who's a good dog? Who's a good dog? You are, that's right, you are! <3 <3

------------> O throw the ball now.

howdy anyone around

@ThatBrazilianGuy it's interesting, and I really want to make good use of aibobot's excess reputation :p

howdy journeyman is this question superuser.com/questions/1182206/… acceptable as it stands
i'm beginning to think the answer is a no for the actual question. I think it is a vild question

@William update it. It needs more details. I'd give some ideas but I'm currently stuck in a military camp

3:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek what branch

That's classified. :p

@JourneymanGeek It's really weird the lack of partitioning information on Linux.
Never seen it like that before. Is that even normal?

@William you can run the stuff to run a pxe boot server from Linux.
@ThatBrazilianGuy no idea. If I knew I'd answer :p

@JourneymanGeek yes not sure without a router though

Oo
I got a medal

3:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek On Super User? In a game? In the army? A dog tag?
I suspect @JourneymanGeek is the new official Singaporean Army mascot! ;p

@ThatBrazilianGuy 5 years service

bomb sniffing

@ThatBrazilianGuy I get called out often (and have been disciplined several times by Father, in some cases blowing up big-time) for being rather dumb. One of the issues holding me back from being more independent is my poor ability to think flexibly. Perhaps spending some time on AotS will help...
(I've told Mother about this; gaming is often seen as a waste of time but the behavioral and disciplinary implications aren't lost on her)
I'm willing to experiment with anything to improve my behavior.

3:43 AM
THE PLOT CHICKENS!!!

I've just found an older Advanced Format 500GB HDD that this enclosure reads on Windows!
Both HDDs are MBR disks
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE

Wow. That's bizarre.

@ThatBrazilianGuy seems... Fowl.

4:04 AM
@MichaelFrank Thanks! I use it every time I go to a conference/competition. The reactions are fun to watch.

yawn

@Rahul2001 I can't find it, where is it?

@ThatBrazilianGuy rahul2001.com/weblog third post

4:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek Congrats!

@Rahul2001 The startups one is really well written, for a high school kid and for a non in-depth general thoughs kind of text

@ThatBrazilianGuy Seriously? Thanks!

Ah. You guys should be mostly back to your regular canine chat mod coverage soon.

Bob
4:35 AM
O_O
Edge now lets you set tabs aside
This. Is. Awesome.

Chrome ftw
Well, chrome minus all the Google tracking ftw!

@Bob what does that mean. In context?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...y'know, I have no idea how to explain
@JourneymanGeek here, this has screenshots and I'm lazy winaero.com/blog/set-tabs-aside-in-microsoft-edge-tab-groups

Ah. That is neat

Q: How do I upgrade JetDirect on an HP LaserJet 4000

user148298I have a trusty HP LaserJet 4000 with a JetDirect Network card installed. I have followed all the documentation provided by HP and I've been unable to succesfully upgrade the firmware to a newer version using the numerous methods they provide. First, I downloaded the Easy Firmware Update and it ...

Oo

5:57 AM
thats.... old

errr
that cloudflare thing
wut~/

So many fukcing sites on it
Looks like I have to reset a lot of passwords

Yea... I'm really not looking forward to the password reset. :|
OR OR OR
Maybe I'll wait for LastPass to offer to change all my passwords for me. :)

@MichaelFrank yeah, I'm.... confused
so api keys (and other stuff) was just dropped into random peoples pages?

6:18 AM
!! s/pages/caches

@MichaelFrank That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

So close, I'm sure of it.

caches?
how do you get someone to cache something, without it being in a page in the first place?
or are we just talking the bots here

Yea, I suppose it would technically be in the page when you put it that way.

I don't use many sites which use cloudflare... And I often login using Google Accounts, so I'm safe, right?

6:35 AM
I'm sure you use more than you realise.

I think it leaked cookies
So no

Where can I ask a question about MS Excel?

@ahorn SuperUser is fine.

6:47 AM
sigh I have no optical drive, but this could use a fix up superuser.com/questions/165216/… .

4-K
Why there are these vertical lines when watching video on youtube? It only comes in youtube. It i suing HTML5 Player, and this comes too often, so every video on youtube is unwatchable.
Using Firefox.

0_0
"forefox" ?

4-K
Yes
Firefox

ah
hmm
Maybe issues with hardware acceleration?

Bob
@4-K Update video drivers. Turn off hardware acceleration. And provide history (when did this start happening? Was it working before? What changed since then, e.g. browser update?)

6:59 AM
^^^^^^^^^^^^^

4-K
I don't even see any option to use the Flash Player instead of HTML.

Bob
Actually. Start with the history.

4-K
After updating.
Okay.
video drivers are up-to-date

Bob
When something is broken: don't go "it's broken". Don't even go "It's broken, see screenshot". Go "It's broken, see screenshot, I think it was because of X because X was the last thing I did since it was last working"
@4-K So. Try downloading the old version to see if that fixes it. Then try updating again and see if it breaks again.

I wonder if the console would be of any use.

4-K
7:01 AM
Actually I watch videos mostly on mobile so it's kinda hard to remember. And, on every other site the videos work perfectly.

Bob
If it does: congrats. You've discovered a browser bug. If you can report the bug with the last working and first broken version, hopefully they can fix the bug.

4-K
But this is weird. This ads that are played, they are played fine.

Bob
@4-K Start by downloading an older version and see if it works.
@4-K Eh. Could be as simple as a different codec.

4-K
Okay. I will try those methods. Thanks all.

Bob
If you want to do a proper regression test, grab mozregression-gui, which'll narrow it down to the specific changeset.
If you have a changeset that caused a bug, it makes a bugzilla report much more actionable
@4-K ^ If you need specific help with those steps, lemme know
I'm going to be afk for a bit, heading home

7:06 AM
perspectiveapi.com this seems neat. Though in theory, some day this might make me obsolete ;p

Bob
@allquixotic ...does that even run?

@allquixotic 0_0

@Rob Stack wasn't using Cloudflare during the period when this vulnerability existed.
so, this place is safe

hello I updated GPU to windows 10 one. But when I open one video of about 4K resolution it is very laggy but when I do same in Linux it is not laggy at all. And the video was not laggy when this PC had windows 8 and assassins creed is also laggy :( but it was not earlier? what to do next?
GPU drivers*

8:08 AM
You need 2 goats, a rubber chicken...

??

Could someone from cloudflare security urgently contact me.
I bet whoever saw that from Cloudflare went cold and clammy, very quickly.

1. Clear cookies and auth-tokens 2. De-auth all social-media SSOs 3. Regenrate passwords 5. Re-gen master passwords https://blog.cloudflare.com/incident-report-on-memory-leak-caused-by-cloudflare-parser-bug/

8:28 AM
@HackToHell UGH SO MUCH WORK

ikr :/
With facebook it's easy
All I have to do is switch off platform and then start it again
bam everything cleared
Others ... :(

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I was halfway through writing an issue on the site list on github before realising I couldn't be sure because cloudflare hadn't released complete info yet. SEswitched to Fastly Jun 2016, first smaller vuln was probably but maybe not Sept 2016 and the big vuln was last week Feb 2017.
@HackToHell I'm just gonna pretend this didn't happen and pray.
Partially because I honestly have no idea what sites I have accounts on.
(Though, the biggest risk period was exactly one week ago, going back a week. So sites visited in that time.)

ah
I'm not actually sure who the guy who said it is ._.

Bob
My browser history says... google, youtube, reddit, se
all of which are unaffected or meh, as far as account security goes

I'm doubtful google uses CF
Reddit might

Bob
8:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek they definitely do
oh, and this giant set of tvtropes visits :P

funny thing is my laziness might save me
I have LJ and DW accounts I've not logged into due to sheer laziness
and most of the people who interest me there moving on

Bob
@JourneymanGeek livejournal and ... ?

dreamwidth

Bob
huh. not heard of that one.

LJ clone/fork many people moved to

Bob
8:44 AM
eh, worst that could happen to me afaict would be my reddit auth token getting stolen
and that's also rather meh
of course, the minor leak since Sept 2016 could affect much more, but the leak rate was also far, far lower...
and I cbf figuring out what I've done in the last half year

I'm a creature of habit as far as log ins go
and I have a suprisingly boring online social life these days ;p

Bob
some 90% of my accounts use one of three usernames and all the same (very weak) password
mostly because I just don't care about those
the remaining 10%... hello, 20-char keepass passwords!

._.
I just had to explain get off my lawn to a friend.

@Bob I'm doing something similar tbh, I just reset the sites password which have payment of any kind
And have my card saved etc
I reset the SSO tokens, that's the only big danger afaik
I have a gmail account with nothing in for SSO

Hello to all!

9:01 AM
morning

9:21 AM
brilliant... we had an advert for a customer go out in a popular magazine (about 1m copies) and only 12 people have been to the website as a result of seeing that advert

what's a magazine :-)

once again i am stunned that we provide value to our customers

Airlink 101 bluetooth USB adapter (Broadcom driver) is not as long-ranging as my Nexus 4's bluetooth? Now why is that might be happenin'...
And there is not settings to control it's power and transmission.
I guess I should have bought ASUS USB bluetooth ...

11:21 AM
>_>

11:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek Lol, the first time I heard that phrase was when you said it to me about a year ago, but the meaning is pretty clear XD

;p
You're a kid.
You'd hear that
She's only slightly younger than me ;p
She's old enough to tell people to get off her lawn, if she had one ;p

@Bob well at the moment the drive isn't getting detected anymore, but in case it does, it'd probably help, thanks.

Bob
@barlop got anywhere specific you want me to upload it?

ge.tt

11:42 AM
@Bob thanks
At the moment I have an image of a partition that I made with ddrescue from within cygwin.. and I can open the image with osfmount to the extent that I get a drive letter for it, but when I double click the drive letter it "is not accessible"
and "access is denied"

Bob
@barlop try testdisk?

on what?
the drive isn't detecting anymore
like it's not getting shown in win7 disk management
can I run testdisk on an image?

Bob
@barlop ...yes?
but maybe make a second copy of the image first to be safe

yeah i'vem ade a copy..
and now the drive is getting detected and with a drive letter..
do you think I should run ddrescue on it to copy the whole drive, or should I run testdisk?

Bob
@barlop ddrescue on the drive, testdisk on the image

I'm getting 2X4 GB memory later tonight to add to my existing 2X4 GB build. Do I need to get the same brand of memory, or can it be different?
