@DavidPostill also wat
(yes, I looked it up. the term makes no sense :P)
@JourneymanGeek I mentioned deluge as an alternative client :P

The date provided is the clue

I totally mispinged

@Bob Well I'm not going to spell it out for you :)

Bob
@DavidPostill ha, I meant more in the "where did it come from?" sense

@Bob ah

12:12 AM
it gets better she hates valentines day too

@Bob I believe it is a "valentines" day for guys kind of thing ...
@Burgi lol
I almost repcapped on WorldBuilding ...

nice ;p

with the domain thing?

Bob
@DavidPostill ahh

12:14 AM
coulda sworn there were more answers 0_0

most publishers register the domains used in books and use them in marketing material
not that i can think of any examples right now

Which is what @DavidPostill suggested ;p

@Burgi That's exactly what I suggested ...

yeah you stole my idea so i had to upvote you when i read the answer

Bob
12:16 AM
Not just "a disorienting bang." I once amputated the screwdriver blade when doing that by accident! — alephzero 3 hours ago
@DavidPostill wasn't really worth mentioning there, but the obvious caveat is you'd need to maintain a website
and the domain registration for ... quite a while

@Bob single html page

Bob
especially if you want to avoid ... accidents, say, 10 years down the track
@Burgi sure, single html page hosted on the aether?

Amazon S3

if the book is successful someone like random house can keep it going forever

Bob
@BenN ...which you'd need to pay for

12:18 AM
I was surprised how much a tld cost ...

tbh, most things handle that by showing, not telling, and using non-standard protocols

Bob
and yea if you wanted an actual tld... that's also a no-go

S3 is only $0.51 per month for the DNS zone and the storage

Bob
@BenN can you prepay on amazon now?
last I checked you'd still need to keep an active card linked for billing

Uh, I don't know

Bob
12:19 AM
which would also need to be changed every 4 years or so

My current strategy is to just have a card linked to it

Bob
^ that's the problem with trying to set up a service meant to last indefinitely
even simply holding the domain for an extended period is surprisingly hard

azure platform allows for business invoicing

Bob
by IANA rules, you need to have valid contact details attached - and they do check! (randomly, yearly)
and then you'd need to pay whenever the renewal comes up

Bob
12:20 AM
@BenN and what happens in 10 years?
that's the hard part of the question
if you're writing a (popular) story, you can expect it to be read decades in the future

@Bob the cost of hosting is next to nothing if you consider the book profits

Bob
with a typical registration period of maybe 3 years, 5 years, up to 10 with some registrars...

I guess I'd just have to make sure to update my Amazon account whenever I switch cards

Bob
@Burgi it's not so much the absolute $ value/amount. it's the time period.

it might fall under copyright protection

Bob
12:22 AM
It's much easier to pay $500 in one go than $30 over 10 years

which is 90 years iirc

Bob
@Burgi ...*what*, precisely, falls under copyright protection?
I can't just print a book with a domain name in it and therefore prevent others from using that name for 90 years!

you can if you trademark it

Bob
@Burgi congratulations, now you have to maintain a trademark as well
a trademark is much, much harder to maintain

this is what large publishers do all the time!

Bob
12:25 AM
anyway, this is largely a moot point because the story apparently focuses on a somewhat-historically-accurate alternate history/adaptation of the roman empire, using ... historical terms. Which are even harder to trademark etc

sadly i'm not creative enough to write a cyber-punk bestseller to prove you wrong

Bob
@Burgi Do they now?
Do you have any examples?
Remember, this isn't for the name of the story itself. It's for a domain used within the story.

cryptinomicon

i'm fairly sure i could find other examples that i have read if i thought about it
> Domain names used in works of fiction have often been registered in the DNS, either by their creators or by cybersquatters attempting to profit from it. This phenomenon prompted NBC to purchase the domain name Hornymanatee.com after talk-show host Conan O'Brien spoke the name while ad-libbing on his show. O'Brien subsequently created a website based on the concept and used it as a running gag on the show
A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other service communicated...

Bob
12:35 AM
@Burgi was looking for examples of using legal protections (trademark, etc.), not the simple act of registering a name
Registering a name obviously works in the short term; it's the trouble of keeping it running for a long time that makes it possibly not the best solution.

I totally looked up that article when answering the question
but how often do you go "I went to "double yew, double yew double yew superuser DOT com""?
"I saw it on wikipedia (or "The Wiki")" or "I saw it on slashdot"

tim berners-lee said he wished he had gone with a hiearchical naming convention
anyway
bedtime

12:59 AM
I nearly bit yelled at someone yesterday
we keep having these dumbass food delivery drivers who keep driving motorbikes on footpaths
there was this complete dumbass who was driving a motorbike on a darkened footpath with NO HEADLIGHTS.
I should have taken down his number and asked him where he worked but he zoomed away cause I yelled at him.

A: How resilient are VeraCrypt and LUKS encrypted volumes against data corruption?

Allan DeamonIn practice, it's almost as resilient with encryption as without it, as long you backup the master key and metadata properly. Apart of metadata, the corruption would affect just the block of the corrupted bit, in most cases just 16 bytes of it. For most of the situations of data corruption, wit...

this is one of the better answers I've seen
and from someone who's basically got a single answer with a rediculous amount of detail

What am I supposed to do with an iso file. Say the iso file is of a pc game, how am I supposed to get the game from it?

@Nick dude, piracy >_>
The price of entry is knowing how to pick locks

10 hours ago, by Mokubai
@bwDraco piracy is bad, mmmkay?

DID BLACKBEARD ASK WHICH WAY TO LOAD A CANNON?
now, if this was a legitmate download, like a vintage copy of mechcommander goal from the sadly short period it was free....

so, Is the answer "extract the canon with MagicIso"

one does not extract cannons...
One muzzleloads a period accurate piece.
Windows 10 does mount ISOs natively

5:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek I wish they taught that at cannon-school
@JourneymanGeek how does one do that?

I think you can quite literally just open an ISO and mounting it is an option
yup
open with windows explorer

@JourneymanGeek oh yeah, that works. What does one do on linux?

@Nick LMGFY

Bob
@Nick Use the Force mouse, Luke Nick

Bob
5:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek without looking at the link: mount :P

lol
Yes ;p
I didn't know about WinCDEmu before ;p

:) learning everyday

@Nick most of these things are trivially googleable ;)
(fun fact. I kept forgetting the name of the gif tool I use and kept googling it.)

@JourneymanGeek googleability be; I trust experienced human reccomendations more than the top goog result.
@JourneymanGeek So, what is the gif tool you use?

licecap
@Bob has a different preference I keep forgetting about with better features

Bob
5:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek ScreenToGif
though I'm more likely to use Snagit at home these days (they added gif in 13)

Bob
6:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek can mods see if a user is question-banned on other sites?

Not really. We can unilaterally close and see if it fails or ping one of their mods

Bob
ah
the question in question => superuser.com/questions/1170465/… => looks like it should have been on SO, but this guy is primarily an SO user, soooo... smelt like Q-ban :P
@JourneymanGeek does a migration fail if they're question banned on the target site?

Bob
I kinda wanted to VtC/VtM but didn't want to give this guy a free pass into SO if he is banned
@JourneymanGeek ah. recent-ish change?
I seem to recall that not happening, oh... five years ago? :P

No free passes
Just VTM

Bob
6:39 AM
heh

Or VTC if terrible

Bob
hm. kiiiiinda feels like not a great question to migrate
it's a bit on the vague (broad, homework-ish) side but tbh I'm not familiar enough with the topic to tell
bleh.
too late, and retract means no revote. ah well, it's only 1/5

Ah I'm out. So... I'll leave it to the community or till I get back

Bob
@JourneymanGeek did you end up finding a chair? :P
get a cushion for your temp one?

@Bob using a dining table chair with a cushion.
Going to try seeing if I can pick one out today localish and if I can lug it home on a bus myself.

Bob
6:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek ow
that sounds... heavy

Lol. The human is pretty big(then again he broke a chair). Also sensible. I may get it another day
I'm more worried about the weather

hola !

Q: How to refill ammo in Insurgency?

HackToHellI like to play co-op(checkpoint) and how do I restock Ammo at a checkpoint? Is there any visual cues to where I can restock ?

I also need/have 4kg of bread flour in my bag

Bob
7:12 AM
@HackToHell I'd answer but I'm on mobile :P

@Bob np, answer when back
Also C4 is amazing
I blew up my entire team with it :)
and got auto kicked :D

Bob
@HackToHell answered via mobile :P
@HackToHell careful with explosives, they have a massive radius
well it's more that they do a fair bit of damage and you don't have much health

I know, didn't expect the radius of damage
It was so awesome !

Bob
but Source physics say even a tiny physical obstruction (e.g. ledge) can block explosions from you :P

oh, and I didn't know there was a resupply button
never noticed that in Team Fortress 2

Bob
7:22 AM
remind me to add screenshots tonight

okay
Screenshots are broken in Arch, otherwise will take em

8:13 AM
Ended up taking a cab home
Got the same model/colour as my old one.

Bob
8:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek You bought a cab? :P

Lol
No a chair.

what , so you rode a chair home ?
so whats up? Do they have a UBER or a LYFT there? uber here has become really popular.
people who would generally only order a taxi , if they wanted to empty thier wallet :-) will order a uber up.

9:04 AM
morning

Naw
Taxis here Arn't that pricy. Cost me about 9 dollars.
Naw. Took the chair I bought home in a cab I didn't buy

I found reasons to upgrade smartphone:

1. System got slow and buggy. Nexus 4 has known bug of becoming too laggy up to restarting itself after several days.

2. Does not support OTG. Can't connect flash storage, RJ45 etc.

3. No option to add beyond built-in NAND since it does not support SD cards.
So are these good reasons to upgrade to another device with almost same technical specifications?

9:21 AM
If you think so.

@JourneymanGeek If it was me he would have accidentally fallen off his bike :)

@DavidPostill if I had my cheap walking stick, that would have happened
ahh
so nice to have a proper chair again

Just realized why I had upload throttling when transferring files locally between mobile and PC. Both were connected wirelessly. Changed PC's connection to LAN while leaving mobile wireless significantly improved results.
Now if I had OTG capability for mobile I would set it on LAN connection by plugging into router.
I exepct the bandwidth would improve even more.
Just eliminating PC's wireless which probably caused a lot of overhead elminated bandwidth throttle between ~300KB/s up to 1.8MB/s

9:47 AM
back to the grind,

Heyyy

sup @Rahul2001
10am start D:

School is boringggg

This is true
use your mind to explore while you're bored
I wonder how many people did what I did, which was to try and solve problems in my head when bored.
Also @Rahul2001 I think we ALL need help with PHP.
I'm just a guy who copypastes stuff and it sometimes works... please don't see me as any kind of coder, that said, I'll help if I can

10:15 AM

you are 24 hours too late

Lol, but seriously, it's an awesome piece of work

@Rahul2001 @Bob already mentioned that ;p
I mentioned qbitorrent
I think everyone agrees utorrent is crap now ;)

you guys are the only people i know who still use torrents
last time i had a discussion with anyone about it utorrent was the best client around

@Burgi heh, I do actually use it to get linux livecds (sometimes ;p)

10:30 AM
me too!

Today I have my first cold in more than 15 years :/

yukky

@DavidPostill How was your birthday?

@Rahul2001 Boring ...

@Burgi ...And yours?

10:33 AM
@Rahul2001 He got a nice voucher :)

mercifully quiet
i was hungover
steam vouchers <.< >.>

steamy from what I heard ;p

I didn't get anything. Even my Mum forgot my birthday. She thought it was today ...
@JourneymanGeek lol

I don't suppose anyone can help me with a little BSOD diagnosis? I feel like I have helped hundreds of people on this site, but, blind to my own issue...

lol
points @WilliamHilsum at... oh wait
@WilliamHilsum I tend to hit systems with whocrashed if I have no clue, and bluescreenview if I have some clue.
also LTNS

10:36 AM
not seen ltns
but, bluescreenview hasn't helped/blank

@JourneymanGeek LTNS?
Long Time No See?

@WilliamHilsum @DavidPostill "long time no see"
;p

ahh! :)

I was hoping for some new BSOD analysis program :)

@WilliamHilsum are there crash dumps?

10:38 AM
Doesn't appear to be... but, its an awkward one...
I have a i7 4790k / 512gb ssd / 1tb mecahnical/16gb memory/good quality 500w (or 450w?) PSU... been working for years without issue... But, I have a load of random things like visual studio, direct x development edition, possibly a few random drivers etc...
no issues/never BSOD ever
about a month or two ago, I got a new graphics card... always been happy with internal graphics, but, I thought why not...
now it crashes seemingly at random...
looked at fanspeed, and, it is getting warm - cpu at 55 degrees, but no where near critical... and I can play a full game (not done too many) without issue... run benchmarks no problem... then I could be just browsing the web and it blue screens...
it has crashed a few times in games, but, probably more often just doing emails!
I think it has to be either - power, heat or just old fashioned driver issue...
I may order new fans and stuff (annoying as I have been happy with i7 stock cooler for years), but, this has just annoyed me so much...
if it was when gaming or benchmarking, I can understand... but it is the randomness that is annoying
anyway... that's it! going to see if there is an update to Blue screen view... it isn't working for me, but, I have the whole nirsoft tools downloaded and haven't updated it in about a year, so, may not be windows 10 compatible...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek $9 on a taxi would get me maybe a block down the street. If that.
@WilliamHilsum protip: windbg
or if you're alright sharing the dump I can take a look at it :P
lots of crashes that come up as ntoskrnl in bluescreenview will show the proper faulting module with a windbg analysis
found graphics driver, network driver and truecrypt crashes that way

ive never used windbg... how much personal information is in there? I don't mind sharing... feel like an idiot here after helping so many people! I googled the issue and it came up with an answer I wrote!! just seem helpless when it is myself/second guessing things... I just don't seem to be able to see the obvious...
hmm, I guess my bluescreenview was out of date... updated and it can see them now...
the last 3 have ntoskrnl.exe, and, the other 2 have hal.dll as well

Bob
@WilliamHilsum depends on the dump
minidump is only kernel stuff I believe
full dump is obviously everything in memory
usually a minidump is enough
but I had to pull a full dump to diagnose that truecrypt crash (Windows Server)
now that was a pain, downloading 4 GB over RDP

oh... im over 100k now! just seen under my name! ... woot! got to get back on this site more :( just so busy now... hate it...
@bob - I don't suppose you fancy connecting in to me? I can download and use windbg here... just in case there is any personal information and only if you have time...

Bob
10:53 AM
@WilliamHilsum yea, that's where you pull out windbg
you can run it yourself if you prefer and I'll *try* to guide you through it
or I can remote in I s'pose *shrug*

but tbh, I don't really have anything personal here... worst I think is vpn credentials in a dump :/ but even that is ip restricted...

Bob
maybe you can start off with the basic analysis command :P

ehh... don't worry... I'll try to find it...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum just grab windbg first, via Windows SDK DDK SDK

thanks... could swear I already have that, but, I don't see windbg anywhere
thought it installed as part of visual studio

Bob
10:55 AM
@WilliamHilsum VS doesn't include the full SDK
if you use the online SDK installer you can grab windbg only
hm, actually

its downloading...

Bob
I need to install it on this machine :P
@WilliamHilsum you only need to tick Debugging Tools for Windows from the SDK
it's not ticked by default...
should come to around 95 MB

hmm... it looks like they have really improved the driver writing experience! haven't looked at this for years... I want the full thing! but... I'll install later!

aruggh
why is php so slow to convert a xls into csv D:
Must be a faster way that I don't have to leave upto the user to do 'save as'

Bob
> php
there's ya problem :P
chuck a profiler at it?

11:03 AM
I don't know how to do that @bob D:
basically the answer is 'xls sucks!'

Bob
s/cls/php/

Bob
xls is actually a really efficient filetype, if read correctly... it was designed to be, considering it was designed for 90s hardware

though firing up the vm on this desktop causes everything to start lagging too, which isn't cool

Bob
it's effectively a mini filesystem iirc. ole or summat.

11:04 AM
I might just install ubuntu server instead, I don't think having the full desktop running is helping

Bob
but it's also an incredibly complex type

yup

Bob
xlsx is much simpler (and much more expensive to read)

just horrible, I can open the file in excel, and hit save as, in about 3 seconds
in php i litterally left it there for half hour trying to save this file out

Bob
well

11:05 AM
No errors, but no visible progress (you can't load part of the sheet, only the whole thing).

Bob
I'm pretty sure your code is just stuffed, then :P
run it through a debugger
and make sure you aren't infinite looping anywhere

the code is litterally 'load the file; save the file'

Bob
and if you're trying to do something dumb like "loop through all rows"

No, I don't even touch the data

Bob
cause often that loops through millions of empty rows too...

11:06 AM
Litterally load and save

Bob
hm
*shrug*
try another library?

yeah, I started looking for some - hense asking here if anyones done it before
got to copy off the files I've done so far first before wiping this :D

ok, windbg downloaded -sorry, had a phone call

Bob
@WilliamHilsum I need to run for a bit, but try !analyze but you might need to .symfix + restart windbg first (save workspace)
load crash dump from file menu
I'll be back in an hour

no worries, I'll take a look... never used it before!
just loaded the usb tool, could have done with that a few weeks ago!

11:31 AM
ELLIPSES...!

12:27 PM
@Rahul2001 hell yeaaah!!!11.......

@DavidPostill i can give you a hug if it helps

12:44 PM
wow that's... weird
Cool, but weird

oh a friend of mine had that shell installed on his laptop too
he was a strange guy though

We've all known a few strange guys I think :D

I thought we were the strange ones ;p

oh god no
we can communicate, at least via a text based interface
we generally don't get offended if we are told we're wrong. We like to learn, and sometimes even welcome change.
we're relatively normal, even @dog

We communicate well on a text base interface cause many of us probably grew up with one ;p
We have a family whatsapp group
full of 'normal' people
If you handed me a room like that, and asked me to moderate it, I think I'd pick rolling in something smelly over that.
