3:00 AM
FWIW, I have not enabled WSL on my machine because of MinGW/MSYS utilities on my machine that a few applications rely on.

I still say that Microsoft joining the Linux Foundation is suspicious and may end up in Microsoft finally getting rid of open-source OSes entirely

lol
@YeniaulAdrianad MS dosen't really care what you run as long as they get paid

we already know they hate open source OSes, considering they've tried to get rid of Linux for a while now (since like Linux and GNU merged, if memory serves.)

I might try this on a new build with a cleaner software setup that doesn't have this stuff.

@YeniaulAdrianad hate is a strong word
and Linux and Gnu never merged
its just that most linux kerneled distros use a gnu userland

3:02 AM
@YeniaulAdrianad That can't possibly be right. The Microsoft of today is not the Microsoft of ten years past.

Oh... I didn't know that. I was under the impression they turned into one project since they were already so similar.

Gnu still holds out hope for hurd

@bwDraco And Microsoft has gotten worse since then... so you're very correct

and you can run linux with different userlands, BSD, android....

@YeniaulAdrianad How?

3:03 AM
@YeniaulAdrianad MS is kinda learning from linux in some ways ;p

I see no sign of EEE from MS these days...

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad my god, there's so much wrong with this statement I don't even know where to start...

at the end of the day though its all about 1) getting your OS to as many people as possible 2) having the most vibrant software ecosystem
and tbh, MS probably hates their 10 year old past selves more than linux
they arn't going to be converting linux people to their latest and greatest

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, they're going all cloud-y now

their biggest competition (same as intel) is their own older products

Bob
3:05 AM
seems like they're more interested in Azure taking off than how much their client OS sells

So... on another topic, if I'm having a problem with the under-the-hood Linux side of Android, does that go here or in Android Enthusiasts?

depends on how under the hood

Bob
makes sense, really. same problem Intel faces. People almost never 'upgrade' a client OS, but subscription fees are long-term income

I'm still holding out hope for ReactOS btw

might not really belong on AE at some point

3:06 AM
Like missing Linux binaries-type under the hood

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...y'know I didn't even read that before I said the same thing

@YeniaulAdrianad been trying it for years. Its getting better much too slowly
tbh the most 'mature' non mainstream OS right now is haiku

Bob
ReactOS is an interesting experiment, but I'd not expect it to ever become a stable OS.

@YeniaulAdrianad the code audit didn't help, and ironically the developer who was most visible moved on to apple, then MS (via sysinternals)

@JourneymanGeek well, it IS a project to turn closed-source software into open-source software, so it's gonna take a while

3:07 AM
@YeniaulAdrianad and missing all their milestones ;p
I give it a try every year or so

And my GS2 i727 is missing around 30% of the Linux binaries that are pretty much standard, like copy and rm

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad ...that's also a rather incorrect description

just an example

Bob
it's not turning closed-source software into anything

3:08 AM
I have no idea there

Bob
doing so without permission of the owner would be ... rather illegal

that's going to be rediculous amount of hacking

Bob
it's attempting a clean-room reimplementation of the same APIs, quirks and all
and that's always fun

@YeniaulAdrianad more like "we're writing a thing that works almost exactly the same as a black box"

Bob
and will never be complete

3:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek AND I can't root, so...

and the black box keeps being changed

I think at one point ReactOS is going to snuff out Windows completely, but they do need to get their s*** together, I agree
and that's probably fantasy-level never-gonna-happen

but I don't care, I wanna see it happen so bad...

I'll settle for "heh, I have this old machine. I can throw reactos on it for granma."
Right now its "UGH, IT KEEPS CRASHING *&&*(&^&*(^&*%&^*%^"

3:11 AM
I seriously doubt ReactOS is going to reach any level of mainstream popularity, and it will probably face the sorts of legal issues Google faced with their Java-inspired APIs...

@bwDraco I'm happy with a working niche OS

I got it working (sorta) on my GF's trashed Toshiba Satellite XP laptop that she can't get an OEM disk for.

and by the time they get it working, a good chunk of patents would have expired ;p

@JourneymanGeek ...but the Oracle v. Google case was about copyrightability of software APIs.

That was a funny story. Toshiba Support just went "well, if you pay for a Vista key we can give you a disc for that"

3:13 AM
(mostly windows 10 here, some fedora, one 2 *buntu boxen)

Courts said yes, APIs are copyrightable subject matter, but also ruled Google's use constituted fair use and was therefore legal.

@bwDraco also, reactos seems to mostly have non us devs

I've got my main Win10 PC and a crap WinXP box (without a case!) that I use just to trash old OSes because half my samples can't be emulated
if we're talking about our PCs now

"samples" ?
lol
looks around

@JourneymanGeek I seriously hope you know what I mean by that

3:15 AM
If some system needed an open-source solution, I would much rather just run openSUSE on it. My old laptop runs it, and so do my servers.

I like how my "Clippy-like thing" comment was starred xD

I see 3 windows 10 laptops, one running haiku, one desktop running windows 10, one nuc class machine running fedora KDE...

Anyway, I gotta shift to mobile, BRB...

though one's my old x220 which I wanted to give dad, and the other's my IDGAF thow it in a bag HP stream

Blah. Can't build a new desktop until the carpeting in this house is replaced with hardwood flooring and new furniture installed.

3:17 AM
oh and one more laptop in properish storage

I'm also waiting on AMD Ryzen. I don't want to commit to Intel Z270 just yet given the prospect of a cheaper yet highly competitive solution from AMD on the horizon.

(No, I'm not a hoader ;p)

Bob
@bwDraco Yea, well, I was going to wait... then stuff happened :P

So @JourneymanGeek you do know what I meant by "samples", right?
I need a graphics card upgrade but my power supply doesn't have PCI-e on it.
I have 2 AMD Radeon HD 5670s and an AMD 6550D APU

Try GTX 1050 Ti, designed specifically for systems without PCIe auxiliary power.

3:28 AM
...I like how every chatroom I've ever entered dies before I even say anything
@bwDraco I'm 16 and unemployed.
Did @JourneymanGeek stop talking in my presence or something?

No, I went for a shower

@YeniaulAdrianad got spare molex?

3:31 AM
I'm around 80% sure you misunderstood "samples".

And... what?

don't assume people know things like that
Oh, for "my power supply dosen't have PCIe on it"

OH you mean the... Yes, I have several, but only 3 branches

Too rich for your blood? Look at the RX 460, also designed to operate within 75W.

3:32 AM
By "samples" I meant malware

and lol
ah

And "too rich for my blood" is anything over...
55 cents

lol
I built my current system by saving for over a year

As my family is that tight-fisted

eh. Things may get better

3:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek that's over 2 years of saving. I have no job, and my father's disabled

I'm in my early 30s and my parents still bitch about my computer related spending ;)
@YeniaulAdrianad I ran a PC I pulled from a curb at one point ;)

@JourneymanGeek My home server was exactly like that for a couple years.

xD I didn't just derail the chat, I threw the chat train off a clixx

Ok, I did spend about 50 dollars on a hard drive, and eventually had to replace the monitor I pullled from my dad's old box cause that old CRT was spitting lightning from the VGA port.

3:37 AM
other than the laptop, nearly all of that was old gear, or pulled from a dumpster
got the case a year later, same motherboard at this point ;p
And salvaged a second screen
4-5 years on... dual UHD, a second PC running linux... ;p
So yeah, just save those pennies, and before you know it, you will have a kickass rig
I think I was sharing a shitty old PC when I was 16 tho

My victim PC

...
looks odd
industrial PC?
the CPU looks like an early model, passively cooled PIII
I totally do not recognise the daughter card on the right

This is quite literally my current PC setup right now.
Not shown: old HP laptop.

Ugh... Finance department is coming to me with questions about who has access to their directories.
The Finance "share" has 4750 folders in it.

2-part motherboard, 1x 128MB and 1x 256MB RAM, comes up as 359 MB in BIOS. ATI Rage 128 graphics card, generic 10/100 WinEthernet card, an 80GB Western Digital and 40GB Seagate Barracuda, both IDE. 3.5" High-Density, 2 disks. A Pentium 3... on a cartridge. Generic sound card, not shown. Power supply slots into "daughterboard"

3:51 AM
Yeah, that's a slot 1

It's a motherboard split into 2, the case was too cramped for a continuous board

they used it on the PIIs (cause of the 'special' way they added cache) and early PIIIs (for... I donno)
I had one of those on a system I picked up at a university scrap bin, along with an SGI octane... ;p
The Pentium II brand refers to Intel's sixth-generation microarchitecture ("P6") and x86-compatible microprocessors introduced on May 7, 1997. Containing 7.5 million transistors (27.4 million in the case of the mobile Dixon with 256 KB L2 cache), the Pentium II featured an improved version of the first P6-generation core of the Pentium Pro, which contained 5.5 million transistors. However, its L2 cache subsystem was a downgrade when compared to Pentium Pros. In early 1999, the Pentium II was superseded by the almost identical Pentium III, which basically only added SSE instructions to the CPU....
Essenially to save cost, they cut back the on die cache and added regular ram cache

It's a Gateway XP PC I pulled from a drug dealer's house after he was arrested. He had DOD7'd the drives so the authorities gave it to me due to the size and the fact that they didn't have the space for it in the evidence archive
Feds pulled*

@YeniaulAdrianad lol

eww gateway

3:55 AM
I don't have much info on it

that explains it

Forensic fail.

A lot of consumer focused brands did wierd stuff
eh. police wouldn't/shouldn't give stuff that belongs to a suspect away.

Aren't the authorities supposed to auction this stuff in situations like this?
@JourneymanGeek Police have the right to seize property used in the commission of a crime.

It was a Gateway desktop from like 03, 04 that nobody bought. I asked if I could have it.

3:57 AM
At least here in the US for major federal crimes like this.

@bwDraco they should keep anything that could be evidence in case, and there's a formal procedure for disposal I suspect.
(I've got a degree in cyberforensics ;p)

Yes, I do live in the US, before you ask. Nobody wanted to buy it (who'd want it in '14?) and I came in and asked if they were going to huck it. They said I could have it.

@bwDraco they auctioned off millions of dollars in bitcoin a while ago

The buyer probably got a steal for it, too...

4:01 AM
Literally? :P

Anyway, so I got the PC for free... and the case said "Made for Windows XP" on it, so I stuck a pirated ISO of XP Pro on a DVD and used a key my dad got from TechNet in '06. So... now the 40GB has XP on it, and the 80GB has what remains of a DOS 6.22 install as of now

@JourneymanGeek They still do, look at the Alienware Aurora R5.

Is it still OS piracy if you use a legit license on a pirated ISO?

@YeniaulAdrianad We talked about this a while back. It's a grey area, but don't risk it. You're better off using the official ISOs Microsoft provides.

@YeniaulAdrianad we don't discuss piracy here but the problem with pirated installers is trust

4:04 AM
Jan 6 at 22:30, by allquixotic
Not only that, but cracked software has a very high chance of having viruses, malware and spyware embedded in it, by the people who cracked it.

A lot of them are modified.... Even if they are clean you do not know what broke.

The sums matched those that Microsoft hosts, they just were hosted on TPB and the like. Surprisingly, a good 80% of the ISOs there are legit...

Is it Piracy if the product is no-longer available for purchase..?

Darn

4:07 AM
BRB

The Aurora R5 uses a very clever design where the PSU sits in front of the motherboard, over the CPU, and swings out for access to the motherboard. To save space, the CPU is liquid-cooled with a low-profile waterblock. That does mean a proprietary form factor, but it allows a surprisingly high level of upgradeability in a very compact chassis.

If it weren't for the liquid cooling I'd think that build would be condemned to hell.

It's about the size of an mATX system, but the clever design lets them pack more.

There's standard liquid cooling.

4:17 AM
I don't trust it.

850W PSU. Accepts two graphics cards (up to 300W each) and a total of five SSDs (one M.2, four 2.5" SATA).
Seems to be discontinued (not available for purchase directly from Dell), but I suspect there's a Kaby Lake update in the works.
...nvm. There's an R6 model.
Chassis and most parts are basically unchanged, but has a Kaby Lake processor and updated motherboard.

...okay... I just got off a chat with a microsoft tech rep. He just gave me the address to the Microsoft ISO archive.

Networking has been updated to use Killer solutions for both wired and wireless (Killer E2500 GbE, Killer 1535 802.11ac with 2x2 MU-MIMO).

They've got ISOs as far back as Server '03 on here!

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad ...wait what
d'ya mean the MSDN one?
I don't recall them having a publicly-accessible archive of retail images

4:29 AM
It's closer in size to mITX than mATX.

Bob
IIRC there's some technet ones but those were eval/VL

Can I post the link?
It's got modern and a few no-longer-supported obes
Ones*

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad If it's an official MS link? Fine by chat policy.

Bob
Though whether you should kinda depends on whether the MS support guy said to keep it secret.
Unlikely to be a problem, if it's a public link.

4:39 AM
It's an IP and he didn't say either way

Bob
huh. interesting :P
well, I'd certainly be interested in taking a look

So... is it OK to post it?

Bob
(not that it matters much to me personally... I have an MSDN subscription and can legally grab MS-DOS 6.22 [for testing] if I wanted)

the fact that its an ip address seems odd

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It does sound odd.

4:41 AM
Well, I'm about to go off for lunch XD

Is it gonna get me penalized if I post it?

"Penalised" is such a harsh word ;p

From here, I mean

@YeniaulAdrianad if someone does something they shouldn't once we'd just tell them

Bob
Eh... assuming what you've said so far is all true? Shouldn't be a problem. If you're concerned, then don't.
But worst that'd happen is @JourneymanGeek might delete the message :P

4:42 AM
Whatever. Imma go for it.

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad Uh. Yea. So. That's a server hosted on OVH.

Seems to be a OVH ip adderess

Bob
^ :P

so eh, I think its probably not official

4:43 AM
lol
Pretty popular dedi host

Bob
I wonder if it's $mssupportguy's own little thing

Plausible

Bob
But it doesn't sound like Microsoft's official stuff, yea. They usually host on Azure (for obvious reasons)
Eh, interesting.

Wait... did I just get pirated software from a MS tech?

Bob
lol
I wouldn't put it past them

4:44 AM
xD

Could just be an attempt to get around red tape

Bob
Could be, yea.

(and this is the worst that could happen, most of the time ;p)

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad If you do intend to use it, verify the hashes against a known source.
(SHA1, SHA256, even MD5 if that's all you can find)

4:46 AM
True... but it might be some weird fallback server in case Azure shits itself

"in case azure shits itself"

Bob
in that case it seems like they'd have more to worry about

riiighhht

Bob
namely, getting azure back up

Bob
4:46 AM
the thousands of other services hosted on azure are probably more important than a few ISO downloads
(thousands? tens/hundreds of thousands by now. millions?)

heck, MS has had a pretty mixed record on that

And I don't trust my ISP... sometimes I can download a file 10 times and get 10 different sums

they've had official download places (digitial river, techbench) that end up just closed down with no warning

It's infuriating

Bob
though in this case, @JourneymanGeek @YeniaulAdrianad ... I'd almost suggest removing that IP if only to prevent google indexing cause it does look a tad dodgy

4:48 AM
Agreeing there

He beat me to it xD

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad this might actually make a case for using BT with its chunk checksums

lol
actually it would be nice (for me) if MS let folk torrent windows 10 ISOs with an official torrent

Bob
of course, whatever the source (with the exception of a proper official source) you should verify the hashes afterwards

I use them for upgrading my boxen almost exclusively, and I'd be happy to seed.

Bob
4:49 AM
and use a legal licence key

The ones on TPB I've noticed usually vary only by updating files (added drivers that match the official sums, extra updates that match official sums crammed into a service pack 3 disk, etc.)
The malicious ones are removed fairly quickly

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad I wouldn't bet on it unless the image as a whole matches
personally, I just use the MS tool. it's easier overall

Except that VM's ISO, it was corrupted as a whole :P
In cases where they don't match, I usually pop open one that does and compare individual files
And they're usually just updated because the ripper decided to
And yes, I do that every time

@YeniaulAdrianad we had someone who came in the other day, had issues with an ISO
we (collectively) wasted a few hours troubleshooting on and off

I think I gave my Chrome a disease.

4:54 AM
then realised he had a dodgy ISO meant for VMs
@ATaco I know a guy who uses comics sans on purpose

I am so sorry.

He's apparently more dyslexic than me

Actually, in that case I see a reason.

Hang on, back to MS support...

I use the source family of fonts, which is awesome, easy to read, beautiful, and actually pretty dyslexic friendly
Not the best tho

4:56 AM
Crooked fonts can give each individual letter more, well, individuality, which can help a Dyslexic person to read.

the best font I've seen was never sold on its own grumble
but I think the regulars here have heard me complain about that a lot

5:15 AM
@DavidPostill Hey, I'm using a lenovo ideapad 100. The dummy manufacturers have placed the microphone next to the a/c power-in. I can't seem to record anything well. Even if I scream at the top of my lungs, the recording will still be inaudible. Solutions plz.

Bob
5:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek case shipped, PSU and mobo pending, CPU and cooler confirmed (I'll probably go pick up/pay after work)... dammit I really need to find a source for RAM soon o.O
hm. would it be insane to buy a cheap 4 GB (or 8 GB) stick and run with that for a bit? :P

5:46 AM
not really
especially if you had somewhere to put it in later, or didn't mind reselling it
@Nick get a headset

A: What does "pager" means in the Site Reliability Engineering jargon?

Journeyman GeekLiterally it is one of these Its a pager. Its an analogue device that was originally used to let you know someone was trying to reach you, and later supported basic text messages. It existed in the dark ages before mobile phones, and is still used sometimes in some fields. Practically it mea...

Today, I got to use "get off my lawn" entirely unironically in an answer.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's a no and no :P
I ended up just paying a bit extra for the 2x16 I wanted, from a different shop

@Bob then, slightly
that works

Bob
that actually had some!
ok, if all goes well
I should have everything by Friday
ironically, the first thing I ordered is the only one not confirmed yet

Well, the idea of phase-change PC cooling with inverter compressor technology is not new but I'm sure there are enthusiasts who are interested in this technology...
The idea just makes sense to me because it would deliver the extreme cooling capacity of vapor-compression refrigeration when it's needed while not overcooling the CPU and causing condensation problems and whatnot when the machine is idle or lightly loaded.

6:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek One of our clients still use pagers for their on-call teams.

@MichaelFrank I assumed so

@JourneymanGeek have one but it's got two jacks, one for microphone and earphones each. And the laptop has one dual port. Shouldn't just plugging in the microphone work on that port?

@Nick with a suitable one. In theory.
Er. Actually you probably need a splitter.
I thought Lenovo and everyone else used combo jacks

@bwDraco give me some advice. Lately most technical stuff sound like jargon to me, the kind of jargon one would expect as lorem ipsum on a coffee table book. How does one find the real basic stuff in the midst of all that?

@Nick read everything

6:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, combo jack. that's what I meant when I said dual port. So, I need a reverse splitter.
@JourneymanGeek that should work in theory.

Oh if it's a single port a Android headset would work

@JourneymanGeek it should. I disliked how the buttons and ports on my laptop was arranged at first but I'm slowly getting used to it.

something like that might use the name adapter instead of splitter. "name of laptop stereo headphone adapter"

What I was thinking of was a trrs female to 2x TRS male splitter

@JourneymanGeek see that's product naming that doesnn't seem like jargon to me. Thank you. Hope you will name more of planet earth's products :)

6:56 AM
@Nick stuff like that is simple and passive.
A phase change cooler is something like a fridge.
An inverter changes DC to AC and for some reason motors that use that are efficient.

inverter was a really bad name for them. basically they use DC motors. Dc motors tend to be more efficient. Many units have used DC motors before, yet "inverter" is being applied to PWM adjustable speed ones?? the DC usually more efficient because there is a permenent magnet. more AC motors use double coils, so they expend the energy to make magnitism twice.

@JourneymanGeek I like simple science. Solely for the reason that it cannot be messed with.

@JourneymanGeek In the case of a compressor, an inverter converts household single-phase AC power to three-phase power. This power is fed to a synchronous motor, whose speed depends based on the input power frequency. The inverter is capable of generating output with variable voltage and frequency, so it is able to drive the motor at different speeds.
This is more efficient than just switching a single-speed compressor on and off to maintain a set temperature. An inverter compressor runs pretty much continuously, adjusting its speed as needed to maintain the required temperature.

DC motors can be easier to control with adjustablle pulses of power. the big "change" that is occuring , instead of stopping the compresser when you have ice dripping off your nose, they slow down and keep running.
so they can be running more continuous, at slightly less noise and much less power consumption

@bwDraco good explanation :) And I guess variable speeds are more efficient at cooling while saving power.

7:12 AM

It is still a bad idea, because water will condence on a barely cold glass even, leaving your computer a dew point. What will you gain? only overclockers points, as the diff between Overclocked on good air & Overclocked on a freezer, usually isnt worth the trouble money or power . now if you dont overclock at ALL, and it causes you to, then you will see a increase. but you wont see much of crud from easy normal OC to the extremist , needing phase change.

Samsung explains it here with respect to their newer refrigerators. We're actually getting one of these fridges in two days.
@Psycogeek The whole point of using an inverter compressor in a phase-change computer cooling system is so that it can be cranked down when the machine isn't under load.
Inverter compressors are also becoming increasingly common in central HVAC systems.

where are you going to put the heat still? and you realise you now have more general heat, because you have the waste heat from the compressor electrical, the friction.

@Psycogeek You'd just have some big fans to cool the condenser coil.

Totally something cool to do for the weekend, I wont do it though for the ~5% possible gain difference from a good air. along with 50% more problematic although fascinating idea.
I am not about to pour $100 worth of Liquid nitrogen (gold) into my computer for a 5 minute thrill ride either. Cept on X-mas everyone should get a 5 minute thrill on x-mas before they realise it doesnt change anything for real that much to the user.
now if you got Sub-Zero plan where semi-conductors become superconductors :-) it might be interesting to freeze that up
absolute zero <-- that one

7:41 AM
@bwDraco I suspect it's overkill
PCs don't really generate enough heat and there's few compressors small enough

8:12 AM
I have seem 'wireless cables' before. (e.g. windows complaining about the bluetooth cable being unplugged, but this one is new for me:
(source: the daily WTF )

Lol
The text is more logical tho

I guess it matches the younger generation terms.

Bob
"younger generation"
at this point it's a toss-up which gen misuses terminology more

It matches the class of people who need to vacate my household ornamental grass patch.

Bob
8:37 AM
sigh
PSU+mobo wasn't shipped today, so that'll definitely be the last to arrive
HDDs from Amazon ordered last month are still lost somewhere

Bob
is there something about HDDs that makes some dumbass screener go "IT'S A BOMB!!!"?

magnets?

Bob
idfk
first one was "damaged in transit", and then price went up
second one is MIA, and then price went up

ok, the i7 is small and light
the cooler is giant and heavy :P

is that a Beveryly Hills Coyote ? cause it looks part Chiwawa

Wouldnt want to run into whatever originally dragged that carcase up there :-)
They probably missed getting pictures of the sasquash :-), only got the cleanup crew. Too bad, next time for sure.

@JourneymanGeek do grey foxes still go floof?

they grey floof

9:53 AM
@Bob jsounds like customs are looking at it suspeciously

@djsmiley2k normally they say something about that
not just radio silence
