3:16 PM
I'd just tunnel through one of my servers.

So why mention paid vpn services o_O?
The idea they provide privacy to anyone is laughable
2

Even then, whoever provides the server where you install your own VPN is technically able to view all your traffic.

Boy, managing our organization site sure is fun. Every time it's a new... interesting discovery of some quite... unique design decisions.
Which is a nice way to say they (uhm.. us?) built weird and broken stuff on top of weird and broken stuff.
And now we have to fix stuff in a hurry. Oh, it was also built in a hurry.
It's been up for a bit more than a year. New ticket: "featured images are distorted".

:D
the whole 'just put that in now and we'll fix it later'
then ignore it for a year because we don't need it yet
then 'why is this broken? we didn't accept this!'

3:29 PM
There's a nice image crop mode installed. It crops images upon article submission. The crooped images then sit quietly eating disk space and being ignored.

@djsmiley2k Hah. For there being "acceptance" it's required to exist some sort of design and planning phase.

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol I've seen that one before

The request was something in the lines of "Our site is terribad. We need a new one. Build it and implement".
There was no graphic design (well, nothing that would merit the name), literally no usage or audience studies, nothing.

OMFG!

Dog
3:31 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Eh, mobile numbers ftw

it was a line break

It's xkcd 773 followed like a guideline
!!xkcd 773

there was an extra linebreak in the PHP

Dog
I kinda want to link my rdp 2fa to Google auth's otp generator

Bob
3:33 PM
huh. I might repcap on AU O_O

Dog
There's an Australia.stackexchange?

Our old site was a monstrosity in any imaginable aspects. We had the chance to build a new one, from scratch. So what we have now? A broken hurried mess, in a CMS no one is proficient, and the content is just news about the organization. Just that, nothing else.

@Dog Yeah. Bob hit the repcap threshold for Australian users.
Didn't you know there were geographical restrictions on stack exchange reputation?

I want a bezelless multimonitor setup. sigh
OH MY GOD I HAVE FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS AAAAGH
What's the limit on the number of monitors on regular home desktop PC? What limits it?
There's a SU answer for it already?

Dog
3:49 PM
@Bob Fail
@Rahul2001 Bot abuse ftw

Bob
@Dog apparently it meant not enough disk space
would be nice if, oh, they mentioned it somewhere!
also, it was an 8 GB VDI. the system requirements said 5 GB...

Dog
@Bob Oh nice
I tend to stick to <24" monitors these days, cause they fit in my suitcase sans packaging

@ThatBrazilianGuy Windows NT supports up to 10, not sure what the modern limit is

Bob
@BenN Windows 7 had a max resolution of 32k in either direction

Yeah but how you physically connect stuff? A mobo with a lot of PCIe slots and a handful of video cards?

Bob
3:54 PM
@Dog I had one 27", and just added a 28", but I'll probably regret it... cause at work I'm on 24"/23" :P

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy Or two video cards with 8+ outputs each
@Bob You'll regret work, or you'll regret the monitor? I don't understand

Bob
@Dog I'll regret having fancy monitors at home cause the ones at work (which I probably sit in front of for longer) will feel inadequate

You can get video splitters

Dog
@Bob Ah

Bob
@BenN Or just daisy-chain DP

Dog
3:55 PM
I sorta had that, but managed to snab four monitors at work, which felt adequate enough
At least adequate enough for me to feel inadequate at work
And that's all that matters

Bob
-_-

Dog
Hmm did Apple announce anything interesting today

Bob
no idea
I'll check in the morning
suspect just another standard iteration, but who knows

Dog
> Apple Watch Nike+ arriving tomorrow
Weyhey? Just what I was needing? :-|

Bob
@Dog ?

Dog
3:57 PM
@Bob Erf, I just slept till 4pm so I could do that

Bob
@Dog well it's kinda 3am here

Dog
@Bob Imagine that, I splept till 3am your time
It appears cute blonde eastern european girl did too, cause she's sitting there with a bottle of milk and cereal
> Now we know it's about 100 large, leaving us wondering: “How did the attack succeed?”

One reason, Hilton says, is that DNS itself can tend to amplify requests from legitimate sources: “For example, the impact of the attack generated a storm of legitimate retry activity as recursive servers attempted to refresh their caches, creating 10-20X normal traffic volume across a large number of IP addresses. When DNS traffic congestion occurs, legitimate retries can further contribute to traffic volume.”
Great, so we've only just realised the entire infrastructure of the internet is prone to self-amplifying congestive collapse?

can anyone explain why an extra linebreak in a PHP would cause the white screen of death on the live server but not on development or testing servers?

@Dog the keynote starts in an hour
@Burgi because T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM.
Zend Israel FTW

Dog
@allquicatic Oh
Microsoft was done by then

4:10 PM
@Dog Apple waits around until 10 AM Pacific time, usually
which always annoys me when tech companies do that because I'm 3 hours ahead of Pacific time
so if a game is supposed to unlock at "midnight", if it's Pacific, it's 3 AM for me

Dog
@allquicatic Huh
Is pacific -8 then?

yeah

Dog
Booh

49 minutes until it starts

Dog
4:12 PM
Thats a bigger difference than china

@BenN Hmmmm. So the PC sees one display with a huge resolution, and this box does all the magic inside? Nice.

@allquicatic well this errant linebreak has got me a meeting with the MD and the HR manager...

Bob
@allquicatic Meanwhile, either it unlocks US time and we get it a day late (from our perspective), or it unlocks local time and we get it a day early (and can give Americans spoilers) :P

not sure how i could have approached this any differently...

Bob
@Burgi Because your testing servers are set up wrong?

4:14 PM
possibly

btw guys, today is early voting day for me, and I'm going to do it
2

@Burgi Because your test env should mirror your prod env.

@allquicatic Ah, good times

they do, they just don't mirror the live env

@allquicatic Yay! Vote for Trump!
2
@ThatBrazilianGuy has been banned from the room

Bob
4:15 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy nope. test should always mirror prod

I am undecided between None Of The Above, Fuck You, Bernie Sanders, and (blech) Hillary Clinton

Dog
> We’ve got well over 100,000 mailboxes in our email infrastructure
..
Each distribution list had about a quarter of the mailboxes in the company on it (so there were about 13,000 mailboxes on each list).
Wat

@Bob Yeah. Typo fixed.

Bob
@allquicatic FPTP, anyone? :P

@Bob ?

4:16 PM
@allquicatic If you want to throw away your vote, I know of some great smaller candidates
FPTP = "first past the post", as opposed to ranked choice

Bob
@Dog "about", within an order of magnitude :P

We should totally use ranked choice, then third parties might actually have a chance

@Bob sadly that is not likely to happen due to the aggressive cost cutting

Bob
@allquicatic First Past The Post, just about the dumbest voting system in use
It's the reason you have this concept of "throwing away votes".

Why don't you guys use a system called "everybody votes and we count all votes and each vote is worth one vote and whoever gets more votes wins"? Too complex?

Bob
4:19 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy ...that's quite literally First Past The Post

@Bob yeah... we always say democracy is the least bad form of government we've found so far, and yet we have the gall to deliberately implement democracy as inefficiently and ineffectively as possible

He's talking about the electoral college
IIRC it was set up so the interests of the larger states wouldn't crush those of the smaller ones

Bob
@BenN Who's talking about what now?
The electoral college is a different issue entirely, and has its advantages and disadvantages.

TBG was probably talking about the electoral college

@Bob And whay you sait it's "the dumbest voting system in use"?

4:20 PM
@BenN i thought it was set up because the USA is so large it was not feasible or practical to have everyone vote

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Because it always devolves into a two-party system.

Dog
> Compounding this problem was a bug in the MTA that caused the MTA to crash that occurred only when it received a message with more than 8,000 recipients. But it crashed only AFTER processing up to 8,000 recipients. So 8,000 of the 13,000 recipients of the message would get it and 5,000 wouldn’t.
When the MTA was restarted, it would immediately start processing the messages in its queue – and since the messages hadn’t been delivered yet, it would retry to deliver the message, sending to the SAME 8,000 recipients and crashing.

there are a fairly small number of elections where the electoral college's vote went against the popular vote
George W beating out Al Gore was one of them

Dog
Erf, well that's pretty much your problem right there

@Bob Uhhhhh.... no? We have dozens of parties here.

4:21 PM
but usually the popular vote (tallying up all citizens' votes) agrees with the electoral college

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Anyone other than the two most popular parties/people will just about never get voted in under FPTP, because it's seen as "wasting your vote" if you vote for anyone other than the most popular.
lesser of two evils and all that

americans vote for the suggestion for the person to vote on their behalf

Bob
If most popular candidate A looks to be about to win and you don't like them, even if you prefer candidate E you might be forced to vote for second-most-popular candidate B because they're "better than A". Voting for E would be throwing away your vote because it would have negligible impact.
Unless everyone else votes for E, but no one will because no one will.
2

all the data-driven analytics about this election for the past several months, all the way up to the present, give Hillary Clinton an historically huge lead over Donald Trump in this election
I don't think this one will be even close

There is the Shy Trump Supporter phenomenon though

Bob
4:24 PM
@allquicatic That's the other risk - that enough people think it won't be close, and perhaps not even bother to vote. Or that votes are spread out too thinly among everyone else.

Dog
@Bob But voting for someone good isn't evil at all

most Trump supporters are as loud and obnoxious as the man himself

Bob
I have no idea whether that will happen or not. It's just a general issue of FPTP.

@Bob well usually only about 40% of the people -- if that -- show up and vote, which actually makes each vote count more
especially in small states, where your vote could count for as much as 1/100000 of the electoral college's votes for your state
(way more than you'd think otherwise)

Bob
The general concept of preferential voting is you can rank candidates in your order of preference. Most implementations of it are far from perfect, but they avoid the biggest problems of FPTP.

4:26 PM
@Bob I see what you mean.

Dog
@Bob Welcome to Brexit

@Bob I also think our Primary / General Election system is stupid, in addition to agreeing with what you just said

Bob
You can put your favourite candidate E as #1. If they don't win, your candidate B can be #2, which will be taken as your vote rather than your vote being tossed away entirely. So you can still vote for E without the risk of not voting for B and letting A win by default.

the actual election should just be what we currently call the primary
no general election

Dog
@allquicatic But according to the man himself, these pre-election polls keep oversampling democrats
@Bob We used FPTP to vote against implementing said voting system

4:27 PM
@Dog depends on the source of the polls

Bob
@Dog lol
@Dog yes/no votes (often referendums) are necessarily FPTP

@Dog for me, it comes down to this: my entire family (self included) is employed on the Government's dime, when it comes down to it; Congress passes an Omnibus Appropriations bill every year that gives the various branches of Government money to operate, which they then pass to my company to support them as contractors
Donald Trump is an anti-establishmentarian, and will likely cut government spending

Bob
Though often the "change" vote needs a supermajority

Hillary Clinton will likely change very little about the executive branch of the Government's spending
So, looking at it purely from a self-interest perspective, I have to vote for Hillary to keep my job

Dog
@Bob Guess what they forgot to do with Brexit

4:29 PM
@allquicatic more like "Hillary will change what her donors ask her to change"

Dog
@allquicatic Selfish pr*.... oh wait

Bob
A referendum for a change in the Australian constitution requires a double majority: majority nationally, and a majority in a majority of states

Dog
So much for the needs of the many over the needs of the few!
@Bob Brexit required one old irrelevant crazy cat lady

so you are one of those people who are sill whining about Brexit

Bob
@allquicatic That's a perfectly valid reason to pick a candidate.

Dog
4:30 PM
Urgh why am I still whining about Brexit

not sure

Bob
@Dog because the entire situation sucks?

Dog
Oh cause once again Britain becomes the best example to the world of exactly what not to do
And how to fuck up a life-changing decision in just about every way possible.

based on what?

@Dog Donald Trump supporters have something to say about that; they would like to wrestle Britain for that dubious title and snatch it from them cruelly by electing a buffoon

4:31 PM
how do you know what will happen? Did you read it on Guardian?

Bob
@tereško based on a good chunk of people backtracking? "oops, we didn't think it'd really happen so we (didn't vote|voted leave for a laugh)"

Dog
@tereško Unrepresentative vote. Absolutely no actual plan on implementation. Alienating two thirds of your population. Leading supporters of the winning side quitting government in the immediate aftermath...

@Bob well .. you only need to find few and show them on the news

Dog
@tereško We only need one prime minister doing that and ragequitting...

but sure, if you are so sure, you could make a petition to have a do-over

Dog
4:33 PM
... and then our goverment's in disarray

Bob
@allquicatic already taking bets :P ozbargain.com.au/node/272395

Dog
@tereško Already done, over five million people signed said petition
Replacement un-elected goverment said "screw that"

@Dog your government has been fubar'ed for decades

Bob
@tereško tad late for that, ythink

@Bob what ever brings the clicks/eyeballs

Dog
4:34 PM
@tereško Yes, which just makes the problem worse
Funny enough the Scottish National Party petitioned to be the official opposition party because both the major UK parties were actually unable to meet the definition.

Bob
> Her position is at odds with the Lib Dems, who have called for a second referendum. Ms Olney deleted her website this afternoon.

@Bob hahaha

Dog
@Bob Yeah just saw that :-P

Bob
> Britain is "hurtling towards a chaotic breakfast that will damage our economy", according to Labour's John McDonnell.
will damage?!

yeah, in this world information travels fast; it's already damaged their economy a lot
big biz: "We don't know, so we're going to err on the side of caution and just not do it"

4:39 PM
@Bob be afraid, be very afraid

Dog
@allquicatic Ironically latest news shows the UK economy grew by more than expected in the 3 months following the vote
:sadface:

Bob
@tereško This has nothing to do with being afraid or not. More along the lines of "uhh, a bit late for predictions of damage".

that too
then again, he's a (self described) marxist .. he's just pushing his current political platform

A politician pushing their political platform?! I've never even heard of that before; that's virtually unprecedented
3
usually they try to advocate their opponents' views instead

:D

4:45 PM
@djsmiley2k I'm running my own and even I don't feel like I have enough privacy

I am still waiting Telegraph publishing front page article: "Rain expected."

@djsmiley2k Between morning and evening. I used to run from UPS block but battery went dead. I have only 60% worn-out laptop 4-cell original battery.

5 hours ago, by djsmiley2k
Your Brazilian, I doubt you work most days ;)
@djsmiley2k Every colored square on the calendar below is a holiday:

@djsmiley2k maybe he's not from Brazil, just really really shaved

:33163387 ಠ_ಠ

4:55 PM
@Bob the brexit problem

lol
@tereško It's waxing not shaving :)

oh .. even better

Dog
@djsmiley2k Been there, whined about that

5:02 PM
:D

what's going on here?

not much.
@arda it's the US vs the UK in the race to the most failed country

And in parallel, slightly NSFW innuendo.

@djsmiley2k oh
Basically everyone sees the worst parts of their own country, so it's biased.

Dog
@arda I see the worst parts of every country
Because i'm a cat

5:06 PM
I think america is far more screwed than we are
We had riots.... 3 years ago now?
maybe longer,
yah must be longer because i was working in brum, so 4 yrs...

I think that America has major issues regarding student loans and health stuff, but they are good about some other stuff, like they're one of the biggest names if not the biggest in countries that are leading technology, also gay rights etc.

@Dog So cats can see every country? Do cats come from space?
Are cats aliens in disguise? That explains a lot!
2

Maybe it's just because 'news' but i see a lot of bad shit going down in the US, daily

UK was a pretty nice country, but life there seems expensive and it just got more expensive after brexit

@djsmiley2k Good news don't sell as much.

5:09 PM
hmmm not noticed the expense yet.

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy No, we're pessimists

nice steambox?
also lol the comments

Dog
@djsmiley2k Nice travel gaming box I could fit into one suitcase and not need cables!

lol

ok found the issue
when i said "i've fixed the issue" the account manager heard "everything has been uploaded and the job is complete"

Dog
6:25 PM
Anyone know of any particularly easy way to send a link you're reading on your PC to your phone?

@Dog I use pocket.
That way I can read it without ads and videos and stuff, and I can sync it to my phone, pc, tablet, ereader etc

Dog
@arda thanks
Chrome is meant to sync history and tabs but it's pretty useless when it only chooses to sync randomly once every few hours and there's deliberately no manual sync now button.

If you just want to copy stuff between your phone and pc, not just articles, then check out gokopy.com

@Dog post them in your own user-chat in Slack (or any other chat system)

Dog
7:04 PM
There are other chat systems?! o_0\
Why have I been here this whole time

7:22 PM
SO will not let you make a private room with yourself, I think

You can make a room where only specific users can talk, if that helps

7:38 PM
@Dog new Macbook Pros: 13" is exactly identical to the existing ones except Skylake instead of Broadwell; still GT3e graphics... probably not much faster than Broadwell
15" has Radeon Pro 455, which is a cut-down lower-TDP Polaris 10 card

7:55 PM
huh, 15" can be configured with a Radeon Pro 460 with 4 GB of VRAM (probably not HBM) and a 2 TB PCIe SSD
$4300 -- only a tad more expensive than Microsoft's Surface Ripoff Studio with a 980

8:07 PM
currently using a $9.99 app (MacID) to use the Touch ID on my iPhone to unlock my MBP... don't see the value of the touch bar... could use more storage, more RAM and a faster GPU, but what I have runs SWTOR well enough so I don't care

8:51 PM
wtf....
i have a parking fine for being over the 3hr free limit by 1 minute
i'm appealing this damn thing

@Burgi donotpay.co.uk will help you with that ... :)

the photo of my car is totally black apart from the headlights and numberplate

" A free service that allows drivers to appeal against car parking tickets in just 30 seconds has been set up by a disgruntled motorist who says councils slap fines on drivers for "trivial" reasons.

Joshua Browder, an 18-year-old computer science student, came up with the novel service for motorists to fight fines after collecting 30 parking tickets from family and friends.

Mr Browder has helped people avoid £1,200 in fines using the online process, despite only setting up the website as a "pet project", he told Telegraph Money.

their signage is in complete dark
i also think that they are meant to stop enforcing the charges after 10pm
i need to go get a photo of their signage in complete darkness
i'll do that tomorrow
its £60!
SIXTY!

9:12 PM
damnn

how do you get a photo of darkness?

@Burgi Using a dark meter? ;p

thats the evidence they submitted
i should have left the carpark without my lights on
it would have been a stealth car to their stupid camera
another reason not to use that shopping mall
NO

...sorry. Stepping out.

9:27 PM
why on earth would you pay?
why are you deleting your messages?

It's something I should not have said.

its an opinion that you are entitled to

I tend to lose my temper at times and may make crazy statements like this.
That's why I decided to step out briefly.

its a silly opinion but you were perfectly entitled to make it

I'm just trying to stay in control of myself.

9:29 PM
do you drive?

For the record, if you see me say I'm stepping out, it means I'm taking steps to ensure I'm not going to misbehave.

i wasn't aware you were misbehaving
could you possibly explain why you were losing your temper over me challenging a parking ticket?

It's not something I would normally write. It happens once in a while but I've been able to control it much better lately.
Sometimes, I'd say things that are the exact opposite of the popular opinion or make very radical statements that make no sense to a reasonable person.

my mother completely agrees with you by the way

It's been a month since this last happened. It used to happen every few days.

9:34 PM
she thinks i should just pay it
did you think i would be offended or upset by your suggestion?

On second thought, it may simply be the easier option. However, if the evidence is marginal, you might want to try appealing it anyway.
@Burgi No, no. It's just me.
@Burgi No, I don't drive.

dude, it is admirable that you are taking steps to change but i fear you might be going too far in the other direction and redacting everything even if it were reasonable

10:14 PM
ugh! that MSU question refers to deleted stuff i can't see!

@Burgi The deleted answer is identical to the reposted answer.

ah

It's there

it must be nice to see into the hidden underworld of stack exchange

@Burgi Not that interesting, to be honest

10:17 PM
but you see ghosts!
netherworld.SE

It's not quite identical; the deleted one had a revision history

Hang on, let me screenshot the original revision

the revised one seems ok
shrug

10:20 PM
@Burgi Except it doesn't answer the question (output just the message without the associated echo command, which was what the OP asked for)
So it's an answer - but doesn't answer the question.

fair enough
i'll be honest i didn't read the question
and i've had two of these insane ciders

which is what the comments under the deleted answer said.

did i link you guys to the photo of the "glamour" model doing a photoshoot outside the crack den near work?

@Burgi yes

i thought i had deleted them but google appears to have backed them up

i have just found out google has helpfully backed up all my photos going back to 2006
there are hundreds of photos of network equipment from when i was an engineer
