12:02 AM
ah
We misuse KACE for inventory management
(It does a lot more but this place has hardly any organisational learning culture - so I donno if we use it effectively)
last place... text files and homebrew alllllll the thiiiiinggggs

Bob
12:18 AM
@oldmud0 USB data pairs are twisted pair... not really great to splice.

then, what do? :(

Bob
As geek said, replace the whole cable (with a new USB cable)

okay, but how would I expose the wires on that cable
actually nvm
just use a decent plier that isn't rusty

Bob
@oldmud0 You can expose the end, maybe even some cheap microusb
Just don't splice two cables together

pen knife + hot solder

Bob
12:20 AM
Well, you can try splicing if you want, but might not work. Bleh.
@Aibobot Ugh. Knives for cable stripping?
I just pinch lightly with a pair of decent scissors.
Much safer.

I have a ton of microusbs

@Bob I've had better/more consistant results with a craft knife

I think I'll remove the microusb part, and try that

Bob
@Aibobot Well, I suppose having a paw makes scissors harder

@Bob well how else would they make such high profit margins than by selling last year's junk with a pretty face
thing is, in the PC market that's not fooling anybody

12:24 AM
@Bob there's that

Bob
btw, @allquicatic, did you change phone numbers back? you didn't respond on allo last weekend

@Bob yep lol

Bob
ah

@allquicatic works for apple ;p

what is allo, some new hipster messaging app?
oh look it's google LINE

Bob
12:34 AM
@allquicatic it's really weird that MS is doing this, though... maybe a custom chip that they ordered and need to use?
actually, that's most likely... 980 non-M that's probably BGA in that form factor
cause with any remotely standard connector (PCIe, MXM, whatever) swapping out for 1080 should've been trivial

@Bob And/or protracted development times
that's a VERY nice looking machine tho

Bob
@Aibobot It looks beautiful. I want it. As a monitor, not a separate system.
@Aibobot There's really not much in the way of development, there...
They have over a month left until they ship, not counting the months since the 10xx came out

Lol. I like actual adjustment on my monitors

Bob
Software-wise, it should be a drop-in replacement
Hardware... could be a tad problematic if it's actually soldered to the board. One wold hope that they do MXM or similar, which would then also be drop-in.
But they had plenty of time to update the hardware for 10xx anyway.
And it's not like Microsoft is lacking people or technical expertise.
For their first ever desktop/high-powered hardware launch? ...really should go all the way

@Bob or play it conservative, and have a solid 1.0 product

Bob
12:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eh, one would hope that if a monitor version existed then it'd have a more flexible stand and/or a VESA mount.

that style of stand isn't really adjustable tho
Its very much a surface imac ;p

Bob
@Aibobot Who said it has to be that style?

true
but if it wasn't it would be a very different design ;p

Bob
@Aibobot Not really... I'm mostly interested in the touch/pen input, the panel itself, and maybe the bezel design.

ah

Bob
12:49 AM
There's lots of VESA-compatible arms that'll do similar tilt adjustments.

"quite similar to but entirely unlike"
VESA makes sense for all the reasons.

Bob
@Aibobot Eh, that's most of what it is. The stand is really minor.
The computer side of the hardware isn't exactly amazing.
It's a beautiful monitor with a so-so computer slapped in the back.

eh, its 'stock' windows no?
;p

Bob
Now if only they sold the monitor by itself...

See "imac" comparison ;p

Bob
12:51 AM
@Aibobot I think a 980 over half a year after the 1080 was released is far too conservative

@Bob agreed

Bob
It's not even a 980 Ti!

>_>
"Not even"
Back in the day.... ;p

Bob
@Aibobot well, according to rumors anyway
not sure if it's actually a 980 cause I don't have time to watch the full video

well, you know rumours
lol

Bob
12:52 AM
@Aibobot more like people discussing the presentation, who I hope got the specs right

I've not sctually caught up yet

Bob
neither have I :P

10 hour days + so fucking tired

Bob
I'm sure Nvidia would've been delighted to provide Microsoft with all the engineering samples and consultants they'd need to get a 1080 in there
@Aibobot Oh yea, at 4500 x 3000... I'd almost want dual-1080. So, yea, not even.
@Aibobot Ok, it's not even 980. It's 980M.

i5 Intel 8GB: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 965M 2GB GDDR5 memory
i7 Intel 16GB: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 965M 2GB GDDR5 memory
i7 Intel 32GB: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980M 4GB GDDR5 memory

hm
Ow?

Bob
12:56 AM
Smells like MXM. Hopefully. In which case you could probably stick a 1080 MXM in there? Maybe? Hopefully? :S

wait. 4500X3000?

Bob
@Aibobot Yup. 3:2.

ah

Bob
> 1-year limited hardware warranty
...you're kidding
> Screen: 28” PixelSense™ Display
Resolution: 4500 x 3000 (192 PPI)
Color settings: Adobe sRGB and DCI-P3 and Vivid Color Profiles, Individually color calibrated
Touch: 10 point multi-touch
Aspect Ratio: 3:2
Supports Pen enabled and Zero Gravity Hinge

"individually colour caliberated" means surprisingly little

Bob
1:00 AM
@Aibobot I think anyone who really cares would probably have their own calibration equipment...
And lots of these things are only apparent when compared side-by-side to something else, and is even lighting-dependent :\

yup

Bob
@Aibobot imacs actually have a considerable bezel, especially down the bottom
surface studio would serve better as a monitor, I think :P
also, imacs don't do pen input, last I checked
nor touch
basically, imac as a monitor is more-or-less on par with other nice monitors. the glass front is nice, but otherwise not so different

"glass front"
Ewwwww EWWWewwewwwwwwww
Matte 4 life

Bob
lol
@Aibobot funny thing, that

erf. My co-worker fucked up yet again

Bob
1:06 AM
I like matte, especially when there's glare
but glass is much better for cleaning

Here's always glare

Bob
matte glass? :P

meh, screen wipes work well for me
That would be cool, but never seen it before

Bob
@Aibobot IMO it's more of a "thick-ish glass vs thin plastic", rather than a "matte vs glossy"

giant matte screen protector?
ah
or...

Bob
1:07 AM
You can apply force on the glass without worrying too much.

lol. I know matte glass exists.
and where I can buy some ._.
not tempered or gorilla tho

Bob
I mean, this one is probably glossy. Which I'm kinda meh about.
Also, it's a touchscreen, gotta be glass for that :P
(I'll happily ignore resistive touchscreens, and the clowns who design capacitive screens with a thin-plastic front...)
@Aibobot Thick plastic is alright too, actually. Though generally it's the cheaper stuff.
Just something you can press on without destroying the LCD panel

1:21 AM
@Bob lol @ "clowns"

Dog
1:36 AM
@Bob Yeah lol
@Bob This
I can't how many reviews I've seen criticizing laptops/monitors/etc. for not having "individual calibration" from the factory because "their target audience of professionals would want it".... NO
Anyone who needs a colour calibrated display will have their own equipment, and monitors need recalibration over time so factory calibration still doesn't cut it for their "target audience"

Anyone who needs a color calibrated display uses a $10000000 screen

Nope
You can calibrate any screen with a 300 or so dollar device. Very worth it

i would rather have good color as standard, than terrible backlighting and colors then "calibrated"

@Dog my last workplace calibrated for consistency...

Can you calibrate all the tvs in best buy with that?
Please do

1:50 AM
Eh. Calibration is often settable on the system
And calibration is maybe a half hour if done right

@oldmud0 like the wallmart tvs, you can calibrate all you want, but with $30 worth of cheap china LEDs as the backlighting it wont really "fix" that problem.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wonder what the poor man's version of that is :P

Colour hug or colormunki smile

Dog
@Bob Getting one for free?

Dog

Dog
> Indian software professional to rent it out single room in 2 bed room furnished flat.
Well that's specific

Now who from the web abbreviations squad would think that BFG stood for anything but Big F--ing Giant?

Dog
2:21 AM
What does it stand for??

@Bob and ridiculously overpriced for the specs.

Big Friendly Giant, as long as it isnt really hungry :-)

Dog
Oh
@Bob Yeah seeing as they custom built an exclusive SKU for them last year... wtf.
@Bob Been there, complained about that...

Bob
@allquicatic Microsoft's now the Apple of the PC hardware world? :P
Actually, I'm not sure if it's that overpriced.
The display really is something special.
That alone could account for >$2k.

2:39 AM
@Bob OK, but if you're going to ship an astonishing display with horrible internals, at least make the fucking thing upgradeable

Bob
Then again, the 5k iMac is much cheaper. Hmm.
Then again, the 5k iMac uses Iris Pro...

I'm excited for what Tim Cook has cooking for tomorrow

Bob
Wait, no, the 5k one has a dGPU
@allquicatic "We removed the USB ports. It takes courage to do this."

@JourneymanGeek Last I checked, I spent $170 on a colorimeter.

what a rip-off you can get a full pallet of paint matching chips at the home store for free, and just put them next to the monitor

Bob
2:50 AM
@allquicatic I wonder if it is upgradeable. I did mention earlier that it might be an MXM card.

Q: How to explain the concept of test automation to a team that only knows manual testing?

MarjI have been working as a QA in our 9 developers team for about a year. Had lots of 'firsts' within the year between personal and professional life. I replaced a QA who only did manual testing and unfortunately, no test cases were left for me to study, and no requirements as well. All in all I had...

@allquicatic ^ :P

but does anyone ever think that way? lets see we want that green tree to look just like a green tree would, so bring a piece of the green tree in :-) I calibrate my professional cameras to a Real scene with various things of various color types in it, and can look at the real scene, and the monitor screen and , amasing they look just alike other than one of them is FLAT

Bob
@allquicatic They're due for new laptops, yea?
Didn't they skip the Air last time in favour of the ambiguously-named "Macbook"?
I really wish these companies would give more descriptive names...
"Surface" - now does that refer to the 'plain' "Surface" or as a shorter name for a Surface Pro or ...
-_-

Dog
Well that was an interesting fuckup

how many surfaces would they sell if it was called Surface (worthless) Atom chip :-)

Bob
@Dog ?

Dog
2:57 AM
My traffic from Edinburgh to London just got routed through NTT in San Jose for a few seconds, then via Verisign in Washington

surface Internet Appliance :-)

Bob
@Dog s/(NTT|Verisign)/NSA/ :P

Dog
@Bob Surface Extreme Pro Hyper-Z Super OC Gaming G1 XXL

surface wish you woulda bought the one called "pro"

Dog

3:01 AM
hey wait, do they make that one :-)

Dog
Faster than a bullet, lighter than a fwog

ahh i am still trying to figure out how they are going to power up that laptop , with the (wooo hoo) 1080nvidia chip in it sucking 200Watts total

Dog
Xtra cowbell bonus doge edition
@Psycogeek with dual 300w power supplies evidently

NGAFAWP Laptop, Never Gets Away From A Wall Plug

Bob
@Psycogeek Switchable graphics?
An idling 1080 doesn't use all that much either

3:06 AM
take 200watts and i want to play battelfield 1 for 10 hours. a small tesla wall could do it

@Bob Yes, which means that tonight is the last night that my Macbook Pro isn't the latest released model of Apple's flagship 13" laptop >_<

Dog
If I was nvidia, instead of selling this "founders edition" crap I'd be selling the Doge edition.

that is more power than is in a pair of 6v 80Lb golf cart batteries, you would need 20 of the best lithium ion 18650s made today, for each hour of operation, IF it was pushed as hard as a desktop versions

@Bob the Surface vs Surface Pro thing was a huge debacle, because the Surface is such a completely, fundamentally different product from the Surface Pro... the Surface is ARM-based, Surface Pro is x86-based, and someone who thinks they just want a cheaper Surface Pro is going to be horribly disappointed with their Surface.
hence why the Surface RT failed utterly
!! s/Doge/Dogecoin/

@allquicatic If I was nvidia, instead of selling this "founders edition" crap I'd be selling the Dogecoin edition. (source)

3:18 AM
so either the wizz bang bestest grafic (whoo hoo we say 1080) \ gaming laptop is going to suck at gaming or it is going to suck at power still

Dog
@allquicatic wait what? The surface 3 is Atom x7 based, that's not ARM

Bob
@allquicatic wasn't that marketed specifically as the "Surface RT"?
still confusing to most people, but not as bad as just "Surface", as in the x86 Surface 3.
well, ok, worse because it's incompatible, but naming not as bad because it had its own name
but I'm trying to draw parallels to Macbook vs Macbook Air vs Macbook Pro :P
which are all x86, but it's hard to talk about the first one because it effectively shares a name with the other two
also, I just remembered why I get pissed off at Linux, and why I refuse to use it as a primary OS
I can't even install the damn thing without spending hours fiddling with it

Dog
@Bob it also came out way before the first Surface Pro, so it was hardly possible for anyone to think it was a slightly cut back Pro when the Pro didn't even exist

Bob
Kubuntu 14.04 installed fine in VBox, yay. Kubuntu 16.10 ... where the hell is the install option? and I supposed to boot into the live environment first? but it just fades to black (w/ cursor) after the progress bar completes!
and here I am in tty1 hunting for any logs that might say anything at all useful

Dog
@Bob what would the NSA want with a dog cat like me anyway. Maybe cause half the people in this hostel are insane they were the target rather than me?

3:28 AM
they are afraid you will get to the donuts before they do

Bob
and people wonder why the masses prefer OS X and windows... — Jonathan. Jan 5 at 1:47
yea... say what you want about Windows, at least the installer usually works...

you probably need to re-compile it to do what you want, dont worry it's EASY :-)

@Bob not at first, no

Bob
@allquicatic oh

Q: Kubuntu - missing menu bar at the top, and task bar at the bottom

spacemonkeyI have pressed something, and top menu bar and task bar at the bottom of the KUbuntu screen, has disappeared, it looks like some fullscreen mode or something got turned on. Any ideas how to switch back?

wut.

IIRC the Surface and Surface 2 were both ARM/Windows RT, and they were literally just marketed as Surface and Surface 2 with no "RT"

Bob
3:38 AM
"Kubuntu, running KDE, is missing parts of its UI. Better install parts of gnome!"
@allquicatic yea, YRC :P

4:27 AM
my ISP (comcast) sent me a letter about buying "Terrabyte" internet. then it says (i didnt read it all) that if i go Over with one of the plans they will charge me $200 Overage charges.
Then they confusingly tossed out my 3 Month record , which is well UNDER a TB for a full 3 months, as if (somehow) i would begin to use 3-4 times More suddenly than my normal?
and this terraPlan they seem to be Threatening me with ?? costs $50 More than the low $50 a month i am spending now.
(normal price for the plan i am on is more like $70) , so i guess the T-plan would be like $120 a month.

@Bob YRC?

Bob
@allquicatic You Recalled Correctly :P

4:42 AM
there are people in america (not in california or new york) who live fully on $500 a month, these ISPs get thier support crew from countries where they pay $50-$100 a month. Between the mobile ISP and the home ISP (not to mention if i had a Server ISP) seems like i could just pay a few people to run a Hard disk around the country in a courier net :-)
do they ever fix or maintainance the infrastructure ? no, have i ever Once asked for a service call, no. have i ended up paying for Multituded of Door-2-Door sales people to arrive weekly to sell me more crap i dont want, Yes.
the ultimate package, unlimited phone data $250-350 with ATT , unlimited cable data $120 with comcast , unlimited TV and movies $150-250 with dish .
at those prices i could afford to Move out of the country itself, and live like a Sheik. I wonder how much water costs in Dubya
Is it no wonder how they can come up with 50 Billion Dollers
to buy out thier only competition.
They are buying the competition out with the money we paid them. wherin they will again raise the prices on us when said competition is swollowed up or steamrollered.
All your Internets Belong to Us, who was it who (originally) stated that the internet would "balance out the power" because the "little guy would have the same voice"

5:23 AM
in perspective, AT&T will be spending the same ammount for Time Warner as 1/2 all the gold in fort knox historicmysteries.com/gold-fort-knox then tomorrow will tell you they need to raise rates.

1 hour later…
6:52 AM
._.
I got sent to check in on a user...
who's not there
and his manager said it was a totally different thing
so... yeah, emailed both of em, since the user's on night shift

7:03 AM
lul
so @Dog according to the register, it was only 100k devices in the original attack on friday
but then the legit traffic caused more issues XD

Another hacking competition!
<yay!>
Anyone interested?
I just realized that if you're blocked, you can still message @Dog through @ChatBotJohnCavil... (S)he'll never block the bot :P

7:19 AM
Some of staff look like of reptilian race to me: ultrasone.audio/en/company/about-us
Maybe they abused the highlight effect too much?

@Rahul2001 don't message @Dog through @ChatBotJohnCavil
If anyone blocks you, clearly they don't want to hear what you say

@Aibobot (a) She hasn't blocked me. (b) I don't want to talk to him/her (c) That was just an observation.
@Boris_yo You... don't want to know

@Rahul2001 I quite literally had to tell someone not to do it
and this has been an issue in the past
So you can totally do that, and that is likely to end horribly

7:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ever used Ultrasone brand headphones?

@Rahul2001 You might get away with doing it once ...

@Boris_yo nope

morning

morning

customer is kicking off that i had to restore their website from a backup rather than leave it broken after a code deployment

7:54 AM
Moral of story - don't deploy broken code?
Aren't you supposed to test it first?

@Burgi ._.
I assume you have a backup of the broken post deployment version?

ugh, so tired
Helped move 80 printers

@Aibobot yes
wait... what?

;p

8:02 AM
it doesn't help that the account manager in charge of that customer is a fucking idiot

Bob
8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek Got a CB280HK
Apparently there's also a CB281HK and no one knows how it's different

re-deploy the broken version
:D
keep repeating this cycle over and over, until the customer gets it
Is this the same one from yesterday with the 'can you deploy the code but no one can see it' ?

8:34 AM
@Aibobot Are you JourneymanGeek?
Why you created duplicate account? Isn't it violation of SU terms?
I wanted to get these until I realzied the price...

I believe the answer to this is:
"it's complicated"
Huzzar, my openvpn works
I just need to add the key of my server so I can ssh back home

8:51 AM
GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!
i nearly lost my temper at the account manager

9:02 AM
she's all "can't you just fix it?"
and "i told the customer you'd have it working this morning"
wtf!

9:21 AM
are OSX VMs legal?

@Boris_yo yes. This is my spare non mod testing account
@Burgi on Apple hardware

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Note to self: don't carry 28" monitors around in questionable packaging unless a car is nearby -_-

@Bob I wouldn't typically carry 28 inch monitors around

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 'twas the easiest way to get from shop to home :P

Also yay. Another UHD user

Bob
9:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek hm?

@Bob oh. Second monitor yes?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol, ya
P2715Q, remember? :P

Another 2x UHD user

Bob
lol
not yet
brb setting up

Yup essentially the same layout as me

9:27 AM
so you can't run OSX VMs on windows or linux hosts?

Errrrr

Bob
@Burgi nope

Not legally or easily

Bob
they don't sell macOS standalone anyway
so how do you suppose you get a legal copy?

@Bob iirc the EULA for Apple hardware let's you run vms. And esxi on Mac minis....

Bob
9:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes, but that's not selling you a copy of the software

I mean for os x vms in general...
Which is why you have Mac mini and trashcan ESC servers

Bob
"trashcan" :P

Trashcan
@Burgi sounds like a use for one of your foundling Macs :p

already set up

Bob
dammit, I need a bigger desk

9:31 AM
its just a faff to move desks just to use it

Bob
@Burgi RDP/VNC

... good point

@Bob I have a dining table as a desk :p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek happen to know any tools to compare monitors side-by-side?

@Bob I guess that online calibration site?

9:41 AM
@Bob i think @bwDraco has something he uses

Tbh I just hit both with the windows calibration tool and called it giod

Bob
@Burgi He uses a physical calibration device. I don't have one, and I'm not really keen on buying one.
@JourneymanGeek yea, that'd do

ah ok

Bob
Oh, this one has a slower response time than the Dell
even though it's TN and the Dell one is IPS
o.O
also the default brightness burns with the light of a thousand suns

Sounds about right for the latter
One reason the crossover really benefited from Windows calibration

Bob
9:46 AM
O_O
I think I broke Dell Display Manager
it doesn't like having this other monitor attached..?!

Really o0
Granted I don't think I run it now

Bob

Sounds broke alright

Bob
huh, replugging the monitor fixed it
I need a longer DP cable :\
