@bwDraco I suggested an edit to your answer about write protection to improve readability, fixing a typo where you wrote CHKDSK will corrupt (you meant correct I believe) the drive in the beggining, and added ddrescue as a recovery option when the drive is write protected and has a filesystem corruption.

But that might need help because I'm only good at fixing up things not really good at creating.
oh and thanks for that answer I learned some new stuff :P

Edit approved; I'll tidy it up when I get a chance.
Thanks for the edit.
Not sure how I missed that typo.

@HasinHayder Consider Donald Trump as an example: there doesn't seem to be any reason for him to be malignant as such, but the sheer advancedness of his stupidity makes him look like what he does it out of malice most of the time. Once you get to that level of stupid, if it has any harmful consequences, you can no longer tell if it's just stupidity, or if it's actually deliberate, intended malice. — Janus Bahs Jacquet 9 hours ago
I love how he's apparently the go-to example... and no-one objects :P
Thank you for THIS awesome list to guide me. I told my fiancee that DIPLOMAT sent me a Name with account and routing info. I discovered its to a FAMILY CREDIT UNION. @Bob I like how "someone doesn't have my point of view" is apparently equivalent to stupidity

Bob
@OliverSalzburg At some point it's become more "outright contradictions and lies" than just POV, though.

@OliverSalzburg build a wall, make them pay!!!

Bob
Not that other politicians don't either *shrug*

@djsmiley2k People seem to assume that politicians suddenly started to sincerely mean what they say and that what they promise is actually what they will be doing when they're elected. I disagree with that point of view.
That being said, the "stupid" things he said apparently got like half of the country behind him
So, I dunno, either the things aren't stupid at all, or he is not much more stupid than half of the country

@OliverSalzburg I gave up after trying to read one of his 'speeches' and got a headache.

Hello guys
I have a stupid question
If handbrake RF is the lower the better, why they recommend 18 to 20 for standard definition and 20 to 23 for high definition ?
Shouldn't be the other way? I can never understand

Bob
@Freedo Where is this recommendation?

In the documentation, when you hover the mouse over the RF scale on Handbrake

Bob
@Freedo Screenshot?

Bob
7:49 AM
@Freedo I think when they say SD and HD they're referring to resolution.

It still makes no sense

Bob
@Freedo Yes it does.
Higher resolution > you'd want a worse CRF to get the same filesize.

If lower is better you should use 18 to have high definition and 23 for standard definition

Bob
Lower resolution > you can have a better CRF for the same filesize.

So you mean they talk about the source quality and not the output ?

Bob
7:50 AM
@Freedo "definition" probably refers purely to the resolution, the number of pixels, not the quality.
Where "quality" is not really strictly defined but is more the number of compression artefacts you can see.

If the source is HD then you use a higher RF to get the same file size/smaller at same quality because source is better quality

Bob
@Freedo No.

If the source is SD you use a lower RF to get more quality at same sizes
I don't think they refer to resolution but quality

Bob
"Standard Definition" and "High Definition" video are defined in terms of resolution.
There is no such thing as "quality" in their definitions.

I can have a file that is not 1080 x 1920 ( 1080P ) but looks like a HD
RF is only about quality not resolution

Bob
7:53 AM
@Freedo I'm not talking about RF. I'm talking about the use of the terms "Standard Definition" and "High Definition".

It still doesn't make any sense

Bob
*sigh*
You aren't listening.
And I'm too tired to bother arguing in circles.

You talk about resolution like 1080p, 720p, but RF is for QUALITY. It doesn't matter if the source or output will be 1080 x 1920 or whatever

Bob
"High Definition" does NOT mean "High Quality".

@Freedo questions really need to go on the main site....
Chat isn't really the best place for em.

7:56 AM
I don't think you are correct
High definition and high quality walk togheter

Bob
Good for you. Believe what you will.
I'm telling you the definition. As in, what's written in the dictionary.
That is the defined meaning of the term.
It doesn't matter what it might typically imply, the definition says otherwise.
Why ask the question if you refuse to listen to the answer? Heck, I even went and gave you links for reference.

I wouldn't call a 1080p video high definition if it looks worse than my videos from 1985

Bob
Too bad. It doesn't matter what you want to call it. The definition is the definition.

When you use a higher definition in youtube you get a higher quality
not just a resized video. but actual better quality

Bob
In no way is HD defined in terms of bitrate.

7:58 AM
@user186658: I've found a simpler way - $4 Bluetooth adapter with UART interface. I will write an application that connects to the media keyboard and processes the data it communicates.. — Violet Giraffe 3 hours ago
For certain values of simpler...

I still think most people wouldn't call a crappy video "high definition"

Bob
Too bad. You're dealing with specialised video processing software. Which will use industry-standard terms, not "most people"-terms.
Quality is such a nebulous concept, anyway.
Here you go, another source: forum.videohelp.com/threads/…

I can use different RF's but the resolution of my file stay the same which is 716 x 574

Bob
> Is there a specific bitrate to attain true 720p or 1080p?
No.

morning

Bob
8:02 AM
>
1080p video can look like crap and still be 1080p.

The industry regards "HD" as anything that exceeds DVD resolution. "Quality" is a separate issue from resolution.
> as has been said before, 720p and 1080p are simply resolutions (1280 x 720) or 1920 x 1080)
No matter how low/high the bitrate, they can still be called "HD".

The reason some "HD" looks good and some looks very soft/blocky/etc. depends on the bitrate chosen and whether it is appropriate for the source.

Still, changes in RF value does not change my resolution so...

Bob
Of course not. All that tip is saying is use a worse CRF for higher-resolution ("High Definition") videos and a better CRF for lower-resolution ("Standard Definition") videos.
Probably with the intention of maintaining similar-ish file sizes.

Yeah now you confirmed what I said earlier
they talk about the SOURCE quality and not the quality of the output
lol

Bob
They don't talk about quality at all.
They talk about resolution. Technically, output resolution. Because that's all that matters when you're considering file sizes.
You could have 5 bps high definition vs 12 Mbps standard definition and those would still be the terms used.

my source is 716 x 574
well 720 x 576 actually
But RF is about quality. If you confirm that resolution is not the same as quality then they shouldn't talk about - RESOLUTION in a quality setting

Bob
8:08 AM
*sigh*

Why it matters the resolution of my source when talking about the RF quality ?

Bob
Because better CRF + lower res is approx the same bitrate/filesize as worse CRF + higher res.
Or maybe it's some idea about not needing as good CRF when the resolution is higher.
Who knows. Go ask whoever wrote that.

I hate when they let the developers write the GUI

Bob
Meh. You're reading far too much into a throwaway example.
Pick your own CRF. Watch it. Adjust it. There, done.

I've been experimenting but I'm getting higher file size than my source
And some time ago I had a 1GB source just like the ones I'm using now and I've used a different encoder and I reduced the file to 273MB with no visible quality loss
I'm not being able to do the same with HandBrake

8:14 AM
once again i can't access the group mailbox...

When converting media, would be better to set AAC to higher bit rates no matter the quality of my source ? My sources can vary to 192kb/s to 256kb/s but I'm doing all output to > 256 AAC
btw thanks for the discussion :D

Bob

@Freedo depends how much you care about audio quality. 192 is already plenty good

Nehalem and Core2 Xeons continue to be a thing being sold by dedicated server companies ._. and they're not even much cheaper (or at all cheaper) than Sandy+ servers by other companies

Well, they're probably trying to make use of old servers rather than let them lie around.

Bob
@allquicatic lots of Nehalem lying around cheap but I haven't seen (m)any c2

What my hosting provider Linode does, as far as I can tell, is that they gradually decommission old machines or upgrade them as people migrate to newer hosts and eventually donate the old hardware to those who might need it. nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2014/07/…

Bob
@allquicatic also, iirc only westmere onwards have aes-ni

The servers recently saw a hardware upgrade that added a lot of extra RAM primarily to the hosts running smaller instances (1 GB instances became 2 GB instances, 8 GB instances became 12 GB instances, etc.) blog.linode.com/2016/06/16/linodes-13th-birthday-gifts-for-all

for some reason ram-anemic systems are common here
I can pay twice as much as my SP-64 and get something like 8 or maybe 16 GB

you see, it costs more to ship RAM to Australia
-_-

Bob
which probably costs them all of $100 at retail...

hey

@Bob For some reason over-speccing the RAM and underspeccing everything else is the norm here... saw an i3 with onboard graphics with 32GB RAM. Kinda pointless.

@Mokubai RAM is cheap these days, even server-grade ECC. That's reflected in the recent upgrades we got.
Enterprise SSDs are still very expensive.
4x16GB of server-grade DDR4 RAM for $360: newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148843
Enterprise SSDs routinely cost thousands of dollars.

4:34 PM
@bwDraco Don't care about enterprise SSDs, I just want a good all-round gaming rig. Here we get an 8GB graphics card based on a GT 930 in a system with 32GB of RAM and an i3.

I'd rather drop that to 16GB and use the money towards an RX 470, which is miles away from any onboard graphics.

It's like putting a Ferrari badge on a Ford Escort. You're not fooling anyone but yourself.
And they wonder why their "gaming" rigs sit on the shop floor gathering dust

I thought you were talking about servers :\

Not me guv, Bob might've been though

It's a common build mistake. 8 GB will do for nearly any mainstream application. Gaming systems can benefit from 16 GB but more than that only provides a significant advantage for specialized applications.
My laptop has 24 GB only because I had several memory-intensive applications to run.
RX 470 will handle most of today's games at 1080p with ease with some headroom for 1440p, and it isn't expensive.

5:03 PM
@bwDraco Bob and Allq were taking about OVH, a server provider IIRC
I need a cheap server that's not blocked by, ahem, streaming services.
I was using BuyVM but it's IP got blacklisted by said services

would these be "gentlemen's specialist" streaming services?

Your reference goes over my head.
It's a streaming service which stream flics over the network. It and its red logo shall remain unnamed.

Hey Draco the reason I removed 1 dash from one of the dividers was on purpose cause I didnt feel the last part was its own section, rather it was a continuation of the second section so should therefore feel like it since the first section talks about non-hardware faults which really is seperate from the last section which talks about recovering your data from hardware faults @bwDraco

I personally still considered it a separate section.

@ThatBrazilianGuy redtube ;)

5:09 PM
I'm busy right now, but feel free to remove the whole horizontal rule (not just one dash) if you feel it should be one section.

> 3. Superman Films a Porno with His Friend’s Wife

I removed one dash because indeed it needs seperation from the previous segment, but it should be within the block of the second section

As a reminder, this room needs to remain safe for work.

@Burgi Redtube and chill

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That makes it look rather ugly. I think we might need another opinion here...

5:12 PM
yeah if statements within if blocks can look ugly if there are too many. Lucky it's just two if statements within a single block
a switch wouldnt help in this case

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere yeah, a hub is better

ooo whats that I want to learn

hometime!

@Mokubai not if you're a 64-bit Excel guru with a 1000x128000 row/column table of data
or - more traditionally - thousands of tabs across hundreds of spreadsheets with little bits of data in each -_-

@allquicatic In that case my argument would be that you have The Wrong Tools For The Job (tm)
Perchance might I sell you a book on SQL?

5:22 PM
I'm seeing a full user session starting up every time a regular cron job runs on my main server. Is this normal?

Or provide you directions to a good bookstore that sells books on data manipulation...

(That cron job has since been disabled as it is no longer needed; it seems to be causing regular CPU spikes.)

@bwDraco how was the cron job set up? who set it up? is it something a default distro package installed or did you or a third party script or app do it?

I had manually added it a while back. It needed root access.

so curl http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/118/root-access ? ;)

5:29 PM
It was to generate a report from web server log files regularly; these reports are no longer needed.

5:53 PM
is it hard to setup hmmm
so apparantly TCP is supposed to guarantee data is sent to the listening application in the order it was sent... but this is not the case for my MINA server, some packets come out of order
