Bob
12:07 AM
@allquicatic did you happen to change yours since... July? :P

12:30 AM
yup

Bob
12:41 AM
Hm... I've been serial-upvoted o.O

It's rainy and cold out there...
Probably less than 20C
> Since 2001, 7,916 people were killed in Chicago. The loss of American lives was higher than in the Iraq war (4504) and Afghanistan (2385) together.
Oh... Sounds impressive?
> Rio de Janeiro had over 39,000 violent deaths between 2001 and 2015. In the same period, the city of São Paulo recorded more than 34,000 cases of murder, according to their security departments.
Gold medal in crime and violence, yay =/

12:58 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy :(

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy That... does not sound like something one should be proud of o.O

Sep 6 at 0:34, by That Brazilian Headless Horse
In a true Brazilian tradition, I jest of my own misery while I'm sad and scared.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Have you considered becoming That American Guy? :P

Although in that case is more desensitized than scared.
And I don't get the impression the entire city is a warzone. It's mostly restricted to the ghettos and slums. Which is really sad, but at least I am safe.

Being able to crack fun at things means it hasn't broken you yet.

1:04 AM
@Bob I don't know, I'm not sure if I could deal with the cultural differences

@ThatBrazilianGuy two words
Cheaper hardware :p

@JourneymanGeek But that's the thing -- I don't fell proud admitting it, but... It nearly doesn't affect me.
I'm white and I look wealthy. Well, non-poor at least.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy I suppose it is hard to adjust to only occasional murders :P

@Bob I don't think I've ever witnessed a murder, shooting, dead body in the street or the like.

I've seen at least one dead body.... Not murder tho.

1:07 AM
I only fear, for real, two things: bandits / robbers and police. And they're not always two different things.

Someone intentionally fell off my building.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy At least they're discreet...
@JourneymanGeek O_O

If I was black and lived in a poor town, I'd be terrified of the police. TERRIFIED.

@Bob it's semi common. And messy.

But I am not, so I am "just" scared of walking alone at night.
@JourneymanGeek Someone intentionally fell off my workplace. Early this year, IIRC.

Bob
1:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek I've only heard of one accidental (?) fall nearby. In the local shopping centre. The middle. Right in front of the biggest supermarket.

20+ floors I think. Punched a hole through a metal sunshade.

Bob
ow.

Here it was 10 floors, but as I work at...
they managed to hide everything quickly
I didn't see the body -- nor I tried to, it's so morbid when people to that, when there's an ugly accident and traffic jams happen just because of people slowing down to see the gory bits, it's so sick, are we vultures?
So, I was saying, internal security blocked everything, they were waiting for the police and wouldn't let me in into work.

1:33 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy uhh i was just slowing down so we dont Add to the body count, (yeat that's it) but I did want to know what happened , , , so I remember and it doesnt happen to ME :-) I think they should show all the gory details, so there is a better comprehention of why not to drive like an idiot.
did that super safe collapsable car, collapse around the driver? Was they wearing a Shoulder belt (seat belt) that cut through thier juggler? Did the air bags go off or was that one of the recalled units? Does a head really go through a safety glass windshield then get stuck there because of the safety glass?
did the engine end up IN thier lap, or did it drop out below the passenger compartment? did that super safe collapsable steering wheel save them or drive through them like a javellin?
and the #1 question, knowing nobody ever installs a child safety seat properly (according to the stats less than 20%) would they have been better off without it.
here in the very heavy california traffic, they just scrape them off the road, as quickly as possible so the mass of traffic can get on with things.

1 hour later…
2:49 AM
@Freedo would you like to use my i7-6700k?

5 hours later…
Bob
7:24 AM
> Some typical features include the "clamshell" model with large displays (240x320 pixels) and in many models, a display on either side. Additionally the phones have many extra features, e.g. a megapixel digital camera. The displays normally have 65,536 colors but the newest models have as many as 262,144 colors.

Morning peeps

Bob
'lo

7:37 AM
morning

Bob
All the Brits are waking up :P

if it helps i need another 4 hours sleep

8:04 AM
@BenN did you get anywhere with the MSE feature request on tags?

8:14 AM
@Bob how old are these?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it's a quote from the Wikipedia page on i-mode

8:28 AM
Ah.

8:48 AM
the "IT director" has just asked why he can't access two servers...
We decommissioned them 2 months ago

8:59 AM
@Burgi lol

9:19 AM
hi
@allquicatic thanks
@djsmiley2k maybe sometime later...

9:55 AM
@Rahul2001 That was interesting

@OliverSalzburg Yeah, it actually made me want to learn the Inuktitut alphabet abugida

ugh... major power outage at our primary hosting company :S

vin
@Bob I am looking at threads column in the process tab of the task manager. I just want to understand why there are so many threads created that persist.

10:20 AM
@Burgi We want names!

10:37 AM
@OliverSalzburg its back up now

Bob
11:16 AM
@vin Then the answer is "because it can"
Threads cost almost nothing.
Some will be for things like service workers.

oh noes i'm here at work, but lunch time, so i presume that's ok D:

Bob
Ah dammit.
I went... 5 months... without Java on this system.
Godammit. Android SDK needs it.

Oh Wow, I just checked the actual policy document, nothing to say no chat rooms.
'Reasonable use in non-work time including breaks'
As long as I don't speak with the authority of my employer
which I'd never do anyway because stupid.

11:38 AM
what company do you work for now @djsmiley2k?

PCMS
2nd line service desk stuff

ah, enjoying it better than the last place?

yah, a lot!
much better, much more my thing

11:53 AM
erf. So tired

@JourneymanGeek it's you with the new job right?

yeah it's a killer for awhile
i was outta work for 1.5 months
and it took me maybe that long to get back into it without feeling constantly exhausted

@djsmiley2k its kind of a wierd mix of boring, and tiring.

urgh yeah

11:59 AM
today was almost interesting.
Someone had bolted a dmx controller and a switch to the back of the desk we were removing the computers from so they could swap it for an identical desk. And not even a new one.
annnd no one knew whose it was

lol

Tommorrow is the last day of that

oh yeah you're doing those seemingly pointless desk swapping.
Well that's good!

@JourneymanGeek That's some kind of lighting thing?

Oh, and my higher clearance level, for going into places I can already go to... got rejected

12:01 PM
I remember fair few years ago, small company and the CTO gave me the job of 'audit ALL the hardware'

@JourneymanGeek lol

@DavidPostill yup, but ... no one seemed to know which team or department handles that

Basically it was a task to get me talking to everyone.... it was horrific :/

(basically, there's 'public' areas, 'normal' secure areas, and 'rich people' secure areas...)

@JourneymanGeek So just bolt it on the new desk :)

12:02 PM
anyone heard of these cowboys? tal0ne.co.uk

@DavidPostill yup. Which they did. While it was still running

Bob
@JourneymanGeek did they do it by driving a bolt through it?
with a nice big drill?

@Bob screws and... brackets

Bob
aww, that's boring
I vote for the drill

I've never seen a 1U device mounted sideways with brackets.

Bob
12:05 PM
you have now!

Sideways, as in standing on it's side?
@Burgi Refuses to load here...
@JourneymanGeek Me and a collegue once moved a server between racks, while powered on....
That's what happens when we've told you tht you need to power it down so we can move it, and you ignore us

@djsmiley2k they are charging us £40/mth for something...
they have no contact number or anything...

@djsmiley2k imagine a lerge cupboard with a switch stick to it flat, and the ethernet cables to the left.

lol good luck. they are in Lebanon

we are paying £6600 a month for dropbox....

12:18 PM

"If you have a billing account, please send a ticket via the system so we can better help you."

@DavidPostill the ticket system needs a login that we don't have :)
anyway, lunch...

abuse the pre sales box? ;p
tho without ANY information...

@JourneymanGeek thats what i was thinking...

or just stop payment ;p
then see what breaks...

12:20 PM
"But i've agreed about their shit and rude support..really my advice is : stay away from tal0ne "

5 mins ago, by Burgi
this is more legacy crap from my old boss

Out of close votes already :/

12:50 PM
hey folks
quick question

@Rahul2001 that is brilliant

I have a raspbian installed on a sd card

So you do

I want to remove it but issue is when I put the card in my windows , to have it format , the sd card is not recognized by windows

ah, windows dosen't like more than one partition in a sd card
I vaguely remember diskpart might work, but I'd use linux

12:52 PM
actually dear @JourneymanGeek macosx doesn't like too
tried the diskpart thing

never owned a mac

  N° disque Statut Taille Libre Dyn GPT
  ---------  -------------  -------  -------  ---  ---
  Disque 0    En ligne        465 G octets  1024 K octets
  Disque 1 Aucun média 0 octets 0 octets

if all else fails I'd run shred on the device

Bob
@JourneymanGeek or chuck it through a shredder? :P

how do you run shred?

12:53 PM
@AndyK its a linux command
it basically erases the entire drive

@bob you should say where is my gun

Bob
@AndyK looks borked

though I distinctly recall the 'modern' way to run raspian uses noobs, and is a single partition

Bob
try disk management
diskmgmt.msc

but how do you run shred when the disk is not recognized

Bob
12:54 PM
there's a chance the SD card itself is broken
happens sometimes

or that

Bob
especially with a pi

@AndyK linux ;p

Bob
the pi is famous for breaking sd cards physically

what???

12:54 PM
so as long as there's a detected device, it'll just wipe everything, partition table and down

the pi breaks down physically sd card???
you mean there is a strong chance I paid 16 euros for nada???
f***
arm, gimme back my money!!!
I'm upset

Bob
@AndyK check with disk management (diskmgmt.msc) first
back in a bit

@Bob there is nothing appearing with disk management ... that's why I'm a bit cranky
honest, I spent 2 weeks trying to figure out how to have the wifi plugging working correctly
Yesterday, stopped and I was thinking of reinstalling everything
and now, the news ... o_O
see. nothing
that's a tough pill to swallow that one.
especially I could use the time to spend more time with GF or the kids

Bob
@AndyK does it still work on the pi?

meh kids will hate you regardless

1:01 PM
@Bob it is still working

Bob
@AndyK then it's not bricked

@Burgi such a comforting thought ... :D

:)

what do you mean by bricked?

Bob
bricked = useless, broken, only useful as a brick/paperweight
what kind of card reader are you using?

1:03 PM
'k

Bob
as long as the card works on the pi, it should be physically fine

made in china card reader

Bob
lol

Bob
are you sure it works? can you try a different card?
back in a bit

1:04 PM
I let you know tonight

@Burgi Have the bank block it, see what blows up. Any company without a number isn't worth dealing with anyway

@djsmiley2k agreed

And who's wondering how to kill data? - grab dban iso. Make sure there's no disks you don't want wiping connected

@djsmiley2k I was about to suggest that..

urgh
got to rmemeber to leave work early to go to docs

1:23 PM
@Bob CITATION NEEDED!!!
That's news to me, I've owned a Pi for a few years and never lost any SD cards.

My pi installs routinely shit themselves
the sd cards are mostly fine

Yeah, ny pihole instance would constanly get corrupted.
I installed raspbian and then installed pihole and things went fine for months, untill I decomissioned it
But it was logical corruption, not physical

I found using noobs for the SD card and having the main OS on a different USB drivbe worked well

1:46 PM
Well at least his partions are sane!

1:59 PM
I've had a pi kill 1 card
I've also killed one in a old eeepc
so... meh, sd cards are terrible for O/S anyway

2:11 PM
wow.... we have used some proper dodgy hosting companies...

That's... impressive.

Oh god NS are terribad

btw we are still paying these companies...

their system is worse than godaddys for design that doesn't let you move away
@Burgi are you sure you're not in one of my old jobs?

oh and the best one so far: carlinwebservices.com
403

2:15 PM
I remember how I saved the company like £3k by getting rid of loads of old domain names we iddn't use

godaddy were amazing when i phoned them the other week
i had the world's most cheerful woman from arizona help me

@djsmiley2k Per month?

per yr

2:32 PM
Hmm. I've just skimmed thru the links, but mostly I've seen people talking about corruption because of either unsafe shutdowns or too many writes.
Now that I mention it, I think I either suspected or confirmed my corruption was because pihole would write a DNS log entry for each DNS request it received from the local network. On the SD card. >_<
I mean, the log writes definitely ocurred. Not sure if it was causing the corruption.

It doesn't help.
I'd been far better if the raspi just supported usb booting
but alas.

IKR?
tho that's cause the raspi has an odd way of booting...
and it would crash if something drew too much power.

So, I need to helpvampire much some help with the DB of a system here at work, and I am a bad case of help vampire know nearly nothing about databases.
Is [dba] anything like Server Fault in which they'll make you leave crying for your mom?
Hm, no [dba] keyword?

wtf how do you connect to a Postgres server through a socket file?
The man page says -p, but that just tells me it's not a valid port :P

2:53 PM
socket files normally have a path
/var/sock/postgres

Alright, my chat suspension has ended.
I've taken the opportunity to think about why I've been behaving like this in chat and have determined that for historical reasons related to my upbringing, I've been trying too hard to impress others. I'll focus on actually delivering improvements, accepting that they may not be obvious at first glance ("do, don't say"). To this end, I've worked out and implemented a way to efficiently check the content I write before I post it.
If you're unfamiliar with what led to this suspension, I encourage you to read an open letter I wrote after a similar suspension several months ago. I'll be glad to discuss this matter in more detail, but otherwise, I'll leave it at that for the time being as I'm trying not to call too much attention to it.

so the "IT director" has put 2FA on our go daddy account for "reasons" and fucked off to london
@bwDraco dude let it go!

I said I'll leave it at that.

@Burgi lol

2:59 PM
@Burgi is this chap your IT director by any chance?

lol!

IT can be really stupid at times.

he is meant to in charge of sales but wriggles his oar into technology issues and fucks shit up does management

lol

he isn't even in my reporting hierarchy but makes decisions that affect my job

3:03 PM
Were you given any documentation, or are you locked out?

@djsmiley2k I'm aware of that
I have the path, the question is how do I make the client use it :P

@bwDraco we are locked out

Not too familiar with this. It's been a very long time since I last worked on a PostgreSQL server.
@Burgi Ouch.
IT stupidity, yikes.

as far as i can tell his IT credentials extend as far as "he likes apple"

@Burgi No server admin experience whatsoever?
At least I can perform basic Linux server setup and maintenance tasks...

3:09 PM
not that i am aware of

(mainly SUSE)

@Burgi Not yet, unfortunately. It hasn't been declined, at least

@bwDraco his linkedin only lists his previous companies but no education

Yikes.

@BenN anything we can do to boost it now you have a shiny new diamond?

3:18 PM
I just updated my LinkedIn profile several days ago, though I still consider my Stack Overflow CV/Developer Story to be canonical.

I guess I have heightened ability to pester CMs now; I could try that

@Burgi He's not a mod on MSE but might be accommodated better in feature requests.

really?

Doubtful :)

3:20 PM
:)

We mere mortals can always use /contact or team@stackexchange.com if we need CM attention. The Tavern on the Meta is also a good way to get in touch with CMs as there's usually at least @Shog9 there.
I've reached out to CMs several times through the Tavern.

Okay, the easy way out was to just symlink the socket file to the default location /var/run/postgresql and then simply run psql :P

3:36 PM
Last night's presidential debate: Trump's charismatic, but his lack of actual political experience was obvious during the debate.
Charisma isn't enough.

Bob
"lack of actual political experience" is a funny way to say "batshit insane"

LOL

lol
okay, I have an exam tomorrow, and I'm frantically trying to fix my mom's laptop
Windows stopped booting, and now I get a boot menu with the options Windows Boot Manager and PCI LAN, none of which do anything
Does anyone know what could have caused this?
hi @DavidPostill

What happens if you choose Windows Boot Manager?

Bob
@Burgi huhwha

3:43 PM
@BenN Windows Boot Manager just makes the PC reboot, and I get the same screen

Bob
@Rahul2001 That sounds like an EFI menu.
Which then calls into BOOTMGR.
Which then fails to find the Windows image and quits.

Could be a broken BCD

Bob
Boot off a recovery disk and run a startup repair.
That catches most of the possible issues.

@Bob MiniXP is also not booting
from USB

Bob
If it doesn't... welcome to the world of manual partition & BCD repair!

3:44 PM
which has never happened before

Bob
@Rahul2001 A proper Windows recovery disk, not some botched PE...

Ah, lol, okay

Bob
@Rahul2001 Have you booted it on this particular laptop before?
Because XP doesn't support EFI. At all.

@Bob ah, I didn't know that
But... this happened out of the blue... She was using the PC like 5 minutes ago

Bob
3:46 PM
...that's what they all say
@Rahul2001 If you have a working Windows install of the same version somewhere, create a recovery disk (or flash drive) from that.
There's a built-in tool to do that.

So. Turns ou I didn't take CYA seriously enough and said A might be seriously bitten at work. =/

@Bob Same version as in both Windows 10, right?

Bob
Or use the original install media if you still have it.
@Rahul2001 Yea. Preferably the same update as well.

@Bob Doesn't come with PCs anymore

Bob
@Rahul2001 I mean if you created a Win10 upgrade USB or something at some point.
In fact, I wasn't even sure you were using Win10 until 5 messages ago...

3:48 PM
Nah, it automatically updated for her

oooh google is 18 today
we should take it out for a beer

lol

Bob
@Burgi It's American...
(that was either a crack at the American drinking age or American beer. I haven't decided yet)
@Rahul2001 ?

Ah, no nevermind

@Bob like australian beer is much better....

Bob
3:51 PM

@Bob Which tool?
oh, okay

Bob
4 mins ago, by Bob
There's a built-in tool to do that.
@Burgi oi, stay away from my VB!
...I've never actually had VB :P
Also, contrary to apparently popular belief, I've never seen nor heard of "fosters"

Castlemaine XXXX, Fosters....

Bob
or anyone drinking it, anyway
@Burgi Not heard of either :P

fosters is actually made in manchester

Bob
3:53 PM
I do know fosters is apparently popular in international media, but I don't think it's even available here

@Bob They used to advertise it here, before it became illegal

Bob
or very hard to find, at least
It's advertised as australian beer...

Foster's Lager is an internationally distributed Australian brand of lager. It is owned by the British headquartered brewing group SABMiller, and is brewed under licence in a number of countries, including the UK, where the European rights to the brand are owned by Heineken International. Foster's annual sales amount to around 500 megalitres worldwide, largely buoyed by UK sales, where it is the second highest selling beer after Carling. While known internationally as the quintessential Australian beer brand, Foster's does not enjoy widespread popularity in Australia compared to other CUB beers...

@Rahul2001 Beer is illegal in India?!?!?!?!

@ThatBrazilianGuy Advertising it is

Bob
3:55 PM
@Burgi they quite literally do not sell it here!

X X X X (pronounced fourex) is a brand of Australian beer brewed in Milton, Brisbane by Queensland brewers, Castlemaine Perkins (now a division of the Japanese-owned company Lion). It enjoys wide popularity in the state of Queensland, where it is commonly found on-tap in pubs and bars. The XXXX brand was first introduced in 1924 and is a throwback to the long-standing tradition of using Xs to indicate the strength of an ale. The brand name also built upon XXX Sparkling Ale introduced in 1878. Currently sold brands include: XXXX Bitter, a pale lager marketed under the brand XXXX. When ordering in...

Bob
ah, if you're talking in bars, that's not something I'd know much about :P

they have XXXX angels (be careful while googling that...)
