2:01 PM

how old do you have to be to remember 9/11?

hm. That's a good question
What's the voting age in the US?
18?

yeah
i think

2:20 PM
!!caaaaat

@qwertyuiop That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: caat, caaaat, caaaaat

Yes, the US voting age is 18
Since the 26th Amendment

so 3? maybe 4?

Sometimes political parties allow younger people to vote in primaries if they'll be 18 by the general election

we were playing gran turismo on my mates PS2

2:27 PM
Anyone here is good with linux CLI?
How can I make this become recursive:
8
A: How do I use wget to download all links from my site and save to a text file?

michaswget does not offer such an option. Please read its man page. You could use lynx for this: lynx -dump -listonly http://aligajani.com | grep -v facebook.com > file.txt From its man page: -listonly for -dump, show only the list of links.

A few I expect

Fairly certain PowerShell has a thing for this
Though that's probably not super helpful on Linux

@ThatBrazilianGuy will do recursive iirc

lynx --dump --listonly, parse the output ...

2:35 PM
er
httrack. Coulda sworn I'd posted a link

@DavidPostill Yeah, that's the direction I want to take, but I'm not good enough with the CLI to make it happen.
I think I'll write a question. Maybe even with a bounty, it's been bugging me for quite a while.
@BenN I'm not that partial to Linux, if it works with PowerShell that's fine to me.

The result of Invoke-WebRequest has a Links property that is probably helpful
Though IIRC there's no built-in recursion, you could implement it fairly easily with that

I've never even been near PowerShell. I'd have to learn it from scratch. =/

It's a wonderful thing
Frankly I'm appalled by the Linux style of "everything is text that you need to parse!"; PowerShell's object-orientation is way more expressive and easier to handle
And anything you can do with a .NET language you can do with PowerShell

@BenN ...and still, it's another new paradigm I'll have to get familiar with.
@BenN Cool, that means I can do... nothing with it! \o/
As in, I myself don't speak .NET (or, in fact, any other language)

2:46 PM
I don't speak inf or cat either/

@JourneymanGeek If you speak INI, you speak INF too :D

@JourneymanGeek I speak cat sometimes. I have no idea what I'm speaking, but the cats even reply!

!!caat

@DavidPostill why did you remove it?

2:53 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy It was only doing internal links

@DavidPostill Sorry, can you clarify?

@ThatBrazilianGuy It wasn't grabbing offsite links

Perfect! I need it that way.

@ThatBrazilianGuy OK. Here it is again.

3:00 PM
It creates an xml sitemap so it should contain all internal links on a website. If you don't want xml you can scrap most of the script.

Hi, guys!
Is there any way to scan for open ports of a particular server through Putty?

@ThatBrazilianGuy I think you can delete lines 7 onwards and the links will be in /home/me/sitemap/www/traverse.dat. You can then process this file how you want.

The server you're sshed into?

prolly need to run nmap then?

3:04 PM
@DavidPostill Yeah, I am reading the commented script

same way you would if it were local

So there is no way doing it just through Putty?

dammit, the GTX 1080 is sold out everywhere

"Is there any way to fry a steak using my bare hands and teeth"? Well, you're using the wrong toolset. Marginally related, but still wrong.

(I'm very newbie-ish user, so if my sentences don't make sense, don't laugh too much please)
@ThatBrazilianGuy Thank you, that explains a lot. :)

3:06 PM
@ŠtěpánBartoš putty is 'just' a ssh client
you need the right tool for the job

^--- that

in theory you COULD do some crazy shit with telnet

@ŠtěpánBartoš You use putty, or ssh, to connect to it, after you know which ports are open.

@JourneymanGeek Got it from Brazillian guy's explanation - thank you too though.

You use nmap to find out which ports are open

3:07 PM
but at this point you'd be a ninja

Nmap is the way for me. Thank you very much, dear stuff-knowing people. :)
(gah, every time I come here I get to know I don't know way more than I thought I don't know.)

@ŠtěpánBartoš stuff-knowing people? me?
...minus the good looks

Yet compare him to

if its local netmap works on anything.

Jon knows stuff. ^^

Ok, now you really got me laughing
although I tend to be more of
!!noidea

That was my last LAN party title picture.
I totally depend on making you guys laugh so I can come here every time I need help and you'll always kindly do so. ^^ :)

@ŠtěpánBartoš Sssshhhh, don't let them realize! I've been doing that for 3 years!

3:24 PM
O:)

3:42 PM
@allquixotic Not in the UK! :-P
Also for some reason they have a fibre optic USB christmas tree on the GTX 1080 page
One of only two items actually in stock on that page: overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/graphics-cards/nvidia/…
Wonder if I should buy all four of them and sell them at a hideous markup like some people are doing on Amazon

Bob
@allquixotic I should be alright to play today, but I'll have to do something for 15 mins around 5:45 pm AEST (if it goes that late)
speaking of which, I really should sleep

Heh, goes from 6 in stock on the product list to 4 in stock on the product details page to 1 in stock o nthe checkout page

Bob
> STOCK ARRIVES SATURDAY!
That's today! :P
> Stock Availability
Online Delivery: ETA - 30/05/2016
Notting Hill Pickup: ETA - 30/05/2016
West Melbourne Pickup: ETA - 30/05/2016

Hmm there's a few listed as due today on OcUK too
But also selling for $1500 "pre-order" on Ebay
I could make a few hundred bucks here if this plays out
But I'm too lazy and tired and prefer to sleep on a cat
Story of my life... Opportunity? Nah, I prefer sleeping. And cats.
Urgh I wish Android had an option for silent notifications

Bob
@qwertyuiop ...doesn't it?
wait, silent notifications?

Anyone interested (or know someone who is) in a $900 USD (price flexible) assembled computer that's VR ready?
Or, where is a place we can sell this (besides Craig's list)

you ruined our hi moment :(

^^ :(
Well technically our hi moment took over half an hour, so I guess it might have been enough.

5:45 PM
@onebree ebay?

6:09 PM
@onebree "VR ready" is such a nebulous term
what actual GPU does it have?

6:21 PM
OH SHIT
I GOT A DRIVE BY DOWNLOAD MY COMPUTER IS INFECTED
literallly I just took a look at my task manager and wininit has a connection to one of those websites I typoed once
my goodness

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Disconnect your internet. Then read:

Q: How can I remove malicious spyware, malware, adware, viruses, trojans or rootkits from my PC?

GnoupiWhat should I do if my Windows computer seems to be infected with a virus or malware? What are the symptoms of an infection? What should I do after noticing an infection? What can I do to get rid of it? This question comes up frequently, and the suggested solutions are usually the same. Th...

xD
btw is this a place to start random conversations such as what I am about to start? it seems so right?

anyways interesting, this might actually be a bug in process explorer. it's only when resolve addresses are checked does it think the hostname is the malicious website.

for some reason the IPs are 0.0.0.0 which means any host...
so... I wonder why procexp thinks the host name for 0.0.0.0 is this malicious website unless it is xD
damn
hosts file hijack? 0.0.0.0 dolikho.com

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere We will let you know if it isn't the right place ;)

okay thank you David ^^

a simple check would be to ping the hostname via cmd line

oh Im dumb, this is funny. so it seems that processexplorer checks the hosts file first when attempting to resolve IPs to hostname. and that website is just the last website I set to 0.0.0.0 to block haha. silly me!

6:42 PM
/

Killing unrecognized processes now would be a good idea
Especially non-Windows ones that are doing lots of disk IO
(Ransomware)

the reason I got scared is because for some reason some of my files are missing permissions for my user account.. my user account vanished in the security tab of these files and folders

on a domain?

but probably one of the programs I use glitched out...

nope not on a domain :/
but I shared the files with a ubuntu vm
although even files that I didnt open or modify in ubuntu got their permissions messed up. so it could've been anything really :/

6:47 PM
oh is this a networking chat?

Nope, this is the main room for SU, where basically anything goes

Sometimes, Its one of those "sometimes work keeps us busy to actually reply" kinda rooms.
Also, Ben N is awesome (just sayin')

is Ben N like Ben 10, but in some odd number system I've not worked out yet?
Well today, while logged into two laptops
I found the admin rights were different, on the same folder, at hte same time :

The version of Ben without media playing programs?
@djsmiley2k Are you accessing the folder over a network?
Security group membership in the Security property page is calculated at the client, which can result in weird stuff

Hey Ben with only 30 processes running I don't think there's anything for me to kill.

6:59 PM
Everything's probably OK then; it's always good to check for Bad Things after a possible drive-by

yeah I take back the drive by xD
I've never had a drive by yet..

@BenN oui
I worry about drive bys
they annoying risk that I don't really know how to migrate without affecting my experience too much
or my wifes...

An organization I know just got hit with a small outbreak of ransomware; I've finally decided to switch Flash in Chrome to click-to-run
Since apparently most browser exploits involve Flash (?)
But yeah, is a user's Effective Permissions showing up different when you look at the folder on different machines?

@BenN users will click, because users.

hmm I wanted to set flash to be click to play but the users didnt know how to enable it and would say it wasn't working
maybe having flash click to play and not clicking unrated websites is what has kept me from getting the drive by's.. only way to get em is if I typo a website name..

8:00 PM
@BenN nope
it was this morning
had collegue check too as thought was going mad

2 hours later…
9:56 PM
!!stack underflow

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: stat, stats

@BenN i concider most browser exploits to use active-X , in my words the ability to run a "program" on the computer derived from the web. Active-X is required to run the "flash" program off the web. I do not believe that most exploits of this type utalise flash itself. Many are Javascript that points to another javascript that therin gets downloaded off the evil webserver. (protection from scripts). . .
. . . What i dont know is if Active-X is THEN a requirement beyond the javascript itself to "run the actual programs on the computer" vrses showing scares.
.Net is also a "program" run off the web, and that should have started becomming more popular for screwing people, when IE integrated it direct into the browser, and made allowance for it. But having it controlled in the internet options, i have no idea if that is being used yet. and very few explainations of how the infections arrive, have shown that to be the "program"
The "program" that is most vicious and fully controlling, is the virus makers own program, after it arrives from the web, then running on the computer. Virtual or sandboxed or controlled or even certified, anytime "programs" (general) have access and permission to do whatever legitimate things would exist, the virus has that access also. So some of the percieved protections are a joke, if normal operations still requires normal accesses , even if "protected" somehow.

anyone ever experience one of their computer components giving off a smell that reminds you of mould? I just finished whiffing in the air in my computer case to determine this smell was coming from there, now I have a slight muscle spasm in my arm... Im wonder if I breathed in some bad chemicalz
you think a capacitor leaked in my powersupply? can my powersupply even continute working after that?
it's either coming from my cpu fan or the powersupply xD

10:12 PM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere ahh could be, but they dont smell like mold. they smell like evil solvents that would rot your brains :-)

smells like mould to me and makes my throat feel dry
dont you love when your cpu throttles down to 8x multiplier? :)

And certannly a computer can operate for years with a few capacitors failing (and probably bulging) or completely popped open. There are often many caps to do the same job.

oh interesting
but yeah my muscle in my arm really hurts now haha

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere well you should take better care of your pets, they pee on thier rivals (the computer) :-)

dont have any pets or spills around my computer

10:15 PM
and pee could smell moldy like

Im really hoping it was just the wooden carton thing I had on the floor next to my computer and that my computer breathed in that smell and thats all it is..

30 processes running, nothing to kill. Sort of funny when back (long ago in a far off land of the lost) in win98 times you would check to see if there was anything beyond the 4 running :-)

win98 task manager did not show services items though, so it was not as extensive, and at that time that was pretty much all you needed to see to know.

in windows xp I think I had it at 18-23
yes 17 processes in windows xp! I remember
that smell is definitely coming from my PC
O SHIT

10:31 PM
Rigor mortis is probably setting in

I just rememberd the power supply fan is wonky and sometimes rattles I thought maybe it failed and the capacitors are blowing but no it's spinning luckily
and I just sniffed the power supply exhaust it smells clean..
According to Dax:

"Rigor mortis is one of the recognizable signs of death, caused by chemical changes in the muscles after death"
sorry but my computer I just recently upgraded, this beast isnt dying!

New computer parts are said to give off some toxic stenches for the first few months, but again not mold smells
Ancedotal : One office replaced all its computers with new ones, and noticed employees were calling in sick way more often, headaches and such. They eventually attributed it to the new products and improved the ventilation at the location. There are other ancedotal stories of that type. Yet real studies have been done that showed that there was no quantities of machine readable toxics being given off on new computers to support them.
