Q: Cloud computing

user51166I would like to know how you actually "run an application in the cloud" (if you allow me this expression). I took a look at Eucalyptus and OpenStack and still haven't understood this. They seems to me more like a "storage" cloud. I would like to know how you may program say a java/scala or c++ p...

ambitious.

lol
The big problem is, there is no such thing as the cloud ;)

2:25 AM
Hmm. I am thinking about writing a SU wiki on fixing Firefox/Google Chrome profile issues. We get a lot of questions from people who "uninstalled" the browser, but did not actually delete their profile/settings

@iglvzx that's such a broad "problem"
@iglvzx As long as I have remembered, Microsoft has recommended that uninstallers only remove system wide settings, but leave the User settings untouched. That way users can reinstall software incase it gets broken.
But then you have the problem where the User settings themselves are the problem.

@surfasb I guess it's just easier to completely reinstall the browser than try to fix a nasty problem because who knows what you did to your browser.

And uninstallers fail to take that into account.
I had a rogue extension that required me to uninstall the browser.
Well, it was an Chrome extension where a bug left it in a weird state. Can't install over it. Can't uninstall it. . .
The extension author and I, after a few emails back and forth just gave up.

Yeah. It shouldn't hurt to write a wiki about it, since a lot of people aren't aware of how to completely uninstall a browser
Or atleast create a new profile

@iglvzx It should be a very rare case. But yes, there should be a post about options besides a reinstall.
Yes, like the new profile option. Fixes like 99.9999% of problems.

2:32 AM
:)
@surfasb Should I post the question and set it to 'wiki' or leave my ownership?

@iglvzx Doesn't matter

Ok. I will reap in as much reputation as possible! Mwa ha ha. lol
Mostly joking, ofcourse.

@iglvzx I've never quite understood what should be considered wiki in the first place. Or why it was created in the first place.

@surfasb, it was before suggested edits

Then again, I've never took the time to research it.

2:37 AM
Now, there is very little reason for it

@soandos So before suggested edits, people below a certain rep couldn't edit at all?

Is it possible to save a question as a draft? I.E. work on it, and then return later? If not, I will simply copy and paste to save for later...

@surfasb, Yes.
@iglvzx, not nessisary (least in chrome). the data should remain saved on the page in a cookie or something (least that is how it works when I answer a question. not 100% sure though.

@soandos That may be risky, if the cookies have a short life
Not worried about it. It would be a neat feature, though

@iglvzx, not sure what to tell you.

Q: Screen fuzzes/zig zags on a custom build

studiohackRecently, I built my first computer: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 4 x 1GB DDR2 RAM 500GB SATA hard drive Radeon HD 6770 graphics card by XFX - using one monitor via DisplayPort -> VGA adapter. MSI P6N SLI motherboard After confirming the computer boots/POSTs fine, I attempted to install Windows 8 D...

:P

@iglvzx I use Notepad++ to compose longer posts. Or Vim. Depending on what I'm working on.

Not to be rude, but I think Psycogeek (superuser.com/users/98855/psycogeek) is legitimately schizophrenic (My uncle is diagnosed, so I have experience with this). His responses are very difficult to follow...

@iglvzx Or his written English is bad.

@iglvzx I have a lot of experience with schizophrenia as well... it's hard to know what to do with that guy

There's that too, but his rambling jumps all over the place

2:44 AM
My writing can be terrible. I reread some of my answers and think "What in the world was going through my mind?"

I guess I can't complain much. At least he is not calling me racist like this one user I ran into...

@surfasb, i've never seen an answer of yours that was incoherent though...

@soandos Well, I guess they aren't that bad. In my eyes though . . .

"You edited my answer because I'm black!" Stuff like that.

@surfasb You set a higher bar for your self. This is about is it comprehensible

2:47 AM
@soandos Yeah, I should read the linked answer first before commenting.

@surfasb, that is his user profile.
@surfasb, look at his answer to meta.superuser.com/questions/3905/… (now deleted)

yay for upgrading my server by 40GB

@studiohack Personally hosted server, or with a host? :)

@iglvzx its an old small business server that I inherited that runs a home server - just files, Fedora 14 with Amahi Home Server - was running RAID 5, now runs RAID 0 for more space (from 67 to 100!) and the addition of another hard drive. so now 140ish GB!

3:03 AM
@studiohack That's neat. I was thinking of converting our old desktop to a home server. My wife said "No", though. lol. She still uses it on occasion...

@soandos Oh yeah, I see that answer. I just assumed he was like 12 years old. . .

well, I run it headless, so that's an awesome idea if you can convert your wife :) - maybe a few more years down the road :P

@surfasb The answer (AFAIK) was not simple (simple grammer, simple vocab) but just plain old unintelliable

@studiohack Yeah. One day. Just wait until I have kids, their first computer will have Linux. :P

@iglvzx I highly recommend this: amahi.org - use the Express Installation CD if you want it headless: wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Express_CD
dead simple, and free (they have account upgrades, but ignore that)

3:07 AM
@soandos This is also true.

@studiohack Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. :)

@iglvzx no problem, we look out for each other and recommend potential stuff that's been tested by super users :)

@studiohack Of course!

3:26 AM
how can I change permissions for a Fedora 14 folder (/home) by command line?

@studiohack: chmod
well chmod -r (permissions) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chmod

so...

@iglvzx: I should do that ilama thing. Put a computer running windows, linux, haiku... and see what future forked processes are attracted to ;p

so r is for recursive... so I should do chmod -r /home?
that doesn't do anything that I can see...

i can't remember if its r
also, don't forget the actual permissions for it

3:40 AM
recursive changes files and directories recursively @JourneymanGeek

no no
r or R

how do I write actual permissions? I have no idea, Linux is very confusing to me

it should be something like chmod -R 666 /home where you replace 666 with the permissions you want

oh, case matters @JourneymanGeek? I'll try again, its a capital R in the cmd help
is there a number for permissions?

two ways - the octet method
yes
what permissions do you want?

3:42 AM
all users? or at least admins (I have two admins)

full permissions for all users?

yeah, that would be nice, since I'm running:

even execute?

41 mins ago, by studiohack
@iglvzx its an old small business server that I inherited that runs a home server - just files, Fedora 14 with Amahi Home Server - was running RAID 5, now runs RAID 0 for more space (from 67 to 100!) and the addition of another hard drive. so now 140ish GB!

chmod -R 776 /home (others can read/write) or 775 (others can read or execute files in the location but not write) makes more sense

3:43 AM
and I've added another drive, but Amahi sees it but won't let me write to it, since Linux permissions are getting in the way, and my server is command line, no GUI
@JourneymanGeek so 776 is everyone, 777 is admins?

ahh, in that case 777
no

how do you come up with these numbers? a kind of guide or what?

ok basically the first digit is owner, second digit is group third number is everyone

and it worked, with chmod -R 777 /home, way awesome @JourneymanGeek, thank you! :)

there's also the rwx notation which also works, but its wierdly harder to remember

3:46 AM
so basically, I'm saying "full, full, full"?, by saying 777?

yes
basically you add the permissions you want. read is 4, write is 2 and execute is 1

wow, that makes a lot more sense, I appreciate it @JourneymanGeek :)

XD. I've been through the same phase before ;p

so what's the difference between full (7) and read/write (6)?

with 6 you cannot execute a file thats there
which is 'safer' in some ways
(so a shell script that was maliciously put in there cannot be run)
which is useful, say if you had a publically accessible folder
What i cannot wrap my head around is that you can have a execute only permission ;p

3:49 AM
well, this server is not visible to the Internet (although it can be/might be in the future), and is a local home file server, so I'm not worried
that sounds neat, the execute only permission

How do you execute something you cannot read? ;p
Its hypothetical, i've never seen anyone use it

well, server works awesome now @JourneymanGeek, thanks again, I appreciate it! :)

@JourneymanGeek is x-only valid? To execute you need read so..
@JourneymanGeek d'oh

4:14 AM
Ughh, not the 4GB question again.

Q: Is there a technical reason why x86 windows is limited to 4Gb of RAM?

jamintoAs you can see in this table, all versions of x86 Win 7 max out at 4Gb. Is there a technical reason for this or is this just a marketing strategy to get people to buy a more expensive OS?

oh fer cryin' out loud

But it is useless against the tide of viewers.
@Sathya The fun never ends!

4:33 AM
is this true? comment on my post: superuser.com/questions/371060/…
> The type of noise your getting is consistant with a analog noise. poor grounding, poor wires, poor connection, or a Ground loop (power passing wrongly between devices). Interferance from another device. lower possibility that it can be generated at the chip making the analog signal, when it is underpowered, or getting noisy or dirty power.
> Changing the adaption might very well help. DVI isnt "adapted" to VGA analog, there is a Analog signal THERE in the card or the dvi cannot have analog there. – Psycogeek 16 secs ago

4:50 AM
hm
There's 'three' types of DVI
DVI-A (which is effectively a VGA analogue signal with a different pin out), DVI-D (digital) and DVI-I which is both
so he's right
@Sathya: precisely

I have DVI - I @JourneymanGeek - see:
The Digital Video Interface (DVI) is a video interface standard covering the transmission of video between a source device (such as a personal computer) and a display device. The DVI standard has achieved widespread acceptance in the PC industry, both in desktop PCs and monitors. Most contemporary retail desktop PCs and LCD monitors feature a DVI interface, and many other devices (such as projectors and consumer televisions) support DVI indirectly through HDMI, another video interface standard. Many laptops still have legacy VGA or, in many newer models, HDMI ports, but fewer have DVI. D...

@studiohack: DVI-I has analogue pin outs

2nd one - two of them:

stupid question - Are VGA to HDMI and HDMI to VGA cables the same?

er, probably not
/me seems to think HDMI is purely digital, so they would not be the same

4:52 AM
either ways, signal conversion is required
so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be the same?

bit one would be DA the other AD
you can't use the same circuit for both

hmm

(well its true nearly anywhere where you need to convert signal levels or from digital to analogue)

@Sathya I have one

@studiohack which one - the VGA to HDMI or HDMI to VGA? :)

4:56 AM
Don't forget folks: Community Ads have been reset for 2012, so submit and vote on new ones today!

@studiohack: most graphics cards have DVI-I dual link

btw @studiohack I've deleted my answer

@studiohack: don't have a natively digital monitor to test?

I swear there's a dupe of this somewhere...

Q: Can I put the Windows XP Luna Theme on Windows 7?

Doug K.Can I put the Windows XP Luna Theme on Windows 7? Will it work? Will it cause damage?

2 hours later…
6:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek nope
@Sathya all right...this problem is one serious bugger - gonna try a DVI to VGA next
@Sathya HDMI to VGA I think

7:13 AM
Stocked up on Windows XP licenses through MSDNAA. :D Did you know there is a 64bit edition of XP!?

@iglvzx Yeah, although I haven't used it.

@TomWijsman Sadly, I don't get Windows 7. Only XP and Vista, among other developer software.
Along with Dreamspark, it feels like Christmas from Microsoft. (Comp.Sci. undergraduate here.)

@iglvzx Yeah, I haven't checked it for a while.

Its somewhat horrible i hear, drivervice
*driverwise

7:33 AM
@iglvzx yeah, I knew that - why not Win7?

@iglvzx wats MSDNAA

7:50 AM
@iglvzx yea heard driver support has been patchy though

@Sathya ok

@studiohack My MSDNAA account is through IEEE Student. Their license/agreement doesn't include Windows 7.

hmmm, sad.

22,357 -> 22,253 :(

@studiohack It's okay. My university provides Windows 7 through Microsoft Student

8:02 AM
Woo free stuff?

:P
my school doesn't have any of that
small community college

@nhinkle Yes. Lot's of free MS stuff.

We get almost everything Microsoft's ever made, except for the core Office suite (Word/Powerpoint/Excel)

@nhinkle I see.

8:05 AM
@iglvzx we can buy Office 2010 Professional from the bookstore for like $70, which is a significant discount from the MSRP of $500ish

LOL. I accidentally edited my old response, instead of posting a new one.

you can get free stuff via dreamspark also :)

@HackToHell Yes. :)

@nhinkle Yeah, I think so too, but I couldn't find it. Gonna wait for techie to find that one.
@nhinkle This is why I hate when people complain about the price of software.
Wordperfect was like $200 bucks back in the day.

All my software's legit :D (which is why I don't have Adobe CS >.<)
Although I can access it on any school computer, it's a pain to use from home because it's not set up well for terminal server access

8:09 AM
@nhinkle Yeah, I got that from the bookstore also :)

There does not seem to be a lot of geeks who are against pirating software. Ofcourse, being a comp.sci. student does change your perspective on the issue

I don't pirate software, but understand why some people do.

@iglvzx lol

I don't personally either, I like to pick software and stick with it usually... I'm willing to fork over $$ for Microsoft Office every 5-10 years, but no sooner
I upgraded from Office '97 directly to 2007

@nhinkle I signed up for an Adobe Student account. CS5 products are practically 50-75% off retail price

8:13 AM
yeaaah but when retail cost is around $1000 for the suite...
i'm just sayin', i'd rather pay this month's rent

@studiohack I think Office is mad cheap for how much it does.

i like that anybody can buy the "home/student edition" for $150 and get 3 licenses

@nhinkle Adobe CS is clearly a power user package. There is no way an amateur can afford that, IMO. Office however, is well within the range of everyone.
It's hard for people to justify spending money on something intangible.

especially with foss alternatives

I think that's why piracy is so rampant.
Even without foss alternatives.

8:17 AM
@surfasb Good point

Whenever I go back to China, I reminded how everyone is looking for a deal.
Everytime I visit the markets there or in Singapore, it is customary to bargain, unlike here in the states.

I love bargaining, done it in Mexico

Everyone is looking for a deal. Bigger items are easier to bargain, since they have a much bigger markup
Something smaller is harder to bargain.

@nhinkle It already worked (your scheme to have rep doners) , I was checking out Studiohacks Bounty on the DVI VGA HDMI canonical superuser.com/questions/15884/…, and hopped over and tried to answer Studio Hacks question here superuser.com/questions/371060/…. Pay It foreward?

I don't have a bounty @Psycogeek, it is @surfasb's.

8:20 AM
Then you go to the bootleg DVDs. You bargain like crazy there.
@Psycogeek Yeah, that was my bounty. I'm hoping to find more Display port info.
Especially considering the proliferating Eyefinity cards.

oops, well the idea is still there, i wouldnt have seen your question

BTW, seen the specs on the 7000 series?

@surfasb: Eh, they wiped out most of the bootleg DVD places here

@surfasb so your going to try and do the wide screen gaming thing?

I have Eyefinity, but not enough monitors, and my build is fishy

8:23 AM
@Psycogeek Yeah, thinking about snatching up some Displayport monitors to try it out.
Plus, having won one of Jeff's 5870s gives me no excuse to try.

Biggest issue i see with the mega res, is the games cant keep up with the res i got, some multi-mon gamers have to lower the res on the trio to get frame rate. Me i can just Lean in to the one monitor if that is the choice :-)
By the way, if someone wants an Edit, superuser.com/questions/371060/… this needs more help, (but dont tell gareth :-)
looks like a language difference, because some things are spelled in a different language?

@Psycogeek Use a spell checker. I mean, seriously.
3

Hi Db, that looks really bad, but i am trying to explain that some of the spellings are not my language

wants a monitor

8:32 AM
@Psycogeek @Gareth's British, so he uses analogue instead of analog

I probably need to go check prices but i doubt i can smuggle in a monitor ;p

@DanielBeck that explains it. it just needs another once over ;-) or a trash can.

@Psycogeek: what's your language?
notes some odd constructions like "solutioned"

@JourneymanGeek My language is whatever works :-)

I mean, your native/spoken ;p

8:35 AM
the teachers tried english originally

I write british/singaporean english though i have an annoying quirk (i use small i when i should be using capital I's when i say 'i' referring to myself) ;p

I am Much more comfortable with Caveman, a good UGG and a OOOh OOh, can say it all.

@JourneymanGeek not capitalising I just shows that your not egotistical :-)

@Psycogeek use this spellchecker it rocks :) afterthedeadline.com/download.slp

8:38 AM
@Psycogeek: a good deal of edits to my questions involve those ;p

We cant really swear here, so the words i can spell in 6 languages are out :-)
@HackToHell I have a speel chucker for the browser that I was planning on installing. Trying to convert Windows 7 into XP+10 years of customising, is holding that up.

@Psycogeek: Thats one reason that my current standard system builds focus on reproducibility. It still needs some work but i can get a 90% identical up from base with two or three clicks and a lot of waiting
The only things i need to get more standardised is the unix style tools i use, currently i use busybox, but might switch to a nice little packaged version which is larger but simpler to install

@JourneymanGeek ??? using scripted install?

8:46 AM
ninite for the base install of the very base packages
there's two or three more things i install
then its a matter of moving in my user files
(batch FTW)
I do not mess around with the OS proper in a general use system

My XP install is the original instalation from the day they releaced XP Sp-1 . I install some 150+ programs (over time). Todays programs are beloted and poorly programmed, beyond the fact that they cost money I don't have at the moment

and if something goes wrong i can boot up a spare system, and it will be mostly identical, other than logs
@Psycogeek: tried some p2v solution?

For 10 years, All I ever had to do with XP was keep it clean and image it, every once in a while i would backstep to last months image.

@Psycogeek: depends on the software. My base systems are mostly running FOSS software
the only 'essential' non FOSS stuff i run is MS office
and an obscure decade old tamil word processor i hate, but is the only thing my mom knows how to use
(i do run other stuff thats not FOSS, but thats on a per system basis)

@JourneymanGeek i too have that dumb Azhgai

8:51 AM
nah, kamban
My dad uses the google transliteration thing which is brilliant

+221 installations over just an year :(
kamban ! I had that in win 98

lol
We've run the software across 4 systems so far
The issue i have with it is, its impossible to run on a LUA account
keeps trying to install fonts on a non admin account, failing, and refusing to start

@JourneymanGeek that's the problem with all oldies

@JourneymanGeek I don't even know what foss is, all my programs are MS only, and gui based. Originally I had $10,000 into amiga, best computer on the planet (at the time) . Amiga Bailed out, and left me an Idiot. So after that it was "Sleeping with Giants" and sticking with all MS based junk

@Psycogeek: for example, paint.net for image editing (well, its no longer open source), 7zip for archives and so on

8:57 AM
7zip's the best on the planet

@JourneymanGeek Ahh, freeware and small utils are some of the best programs out there, easily replacing windows stuff. When it came to very complex working programs, like trying to replace photoshop and pro editing. (usually the pigpiles) they would crash, and that is where the Windows are usefull, to toss things out of.

Man, I wish we could reference anchors to anchors within our answer.

lol
@Psycogeek: basically nearly all my freeware is installed off a single installer
