@JourneymanGeek Oddly enough, my 3 TB WD Green does not indicate that it is an Advanced Format drive anywhere on the label. The QR code is not of much use, either; it just points to the product page for the drive family (not even the specific model WD30EZRX).

It's 512e, but some older WD drives I've worked with do in fact say so.

If you do the math on the numbers on the specs page it seems the sectors are more like 530 bytes. So clearly it's the NSA hiding things

That's what many older WD AF drives say. If I recall correctly, the WD Black hard drive that came with my laptop had the same notice.

I remember being able to configure the fingerprint reader on my old laptop to be stricter with the fingerprint scanning; it could be configured to have a false acceptance rate of 1 in 100,000 (0.001%). Not sure how good my current laptop's fingerprint reader is, though.

Some programs can be called from the command line. For example (nmap) which you only have to type nmap. Some programs requires you to go in the right directory before calling the program. I was wondering if there was file (with a list of commands to call without navigating) that would automatically find that perticular program. This way, I wouldn't have to navigate to the directory before calling it.

I have no idea if that works or not. Can't compile it here and I have no intellisense for the Win10 stuff

You'll need to grab the NotificationExtensions.Win10 package off NuGet

And you'll need to reference Windows.winmd through the references dialog ("Windows" on the left)

You'll also need to add the two Growl libs via the references dialog ("Browse" on the left)

and you'll need to go to project properties and change the build settings to x86 instead of AnyCPU

Comparatively I am looking at a C++/CLI program right now which uses _stprintf_s rather than PathCombine to combine paths to generate a working directory ._.

I can't find anything on using _stprintf_s to merge any sort of path. Clearly this Japanese code is using some horrible outdated practice.

Heck, when I first started modifying the program's source, all the source was encoded in Shift-JIS

Coffeemaker tips: Remove the carafe, run the coffeemaker with the lid open to preheat the water until you notice that it starts to "force" itself out, then close the lid to begin brewing. If it supports auto-pause, wait about 20-30 seconds before you insert the carafe to let the coffee grounds steep (and to avoid thermal shock due to an empty carafe being placed on the hot plate).

Amazon has the 850 PRO 512 GB for 230€, which would be perfectly fine. If another one has a better price, but is marginally slower, I'd still go with the 850 PRO

Latency is the limiting factor, not throughput. It's not like you would give the SSD dozens operations to perform all at the same time for minutes or hours at a time. Raw IOPS numbers for QD32 aren't really relevant in consumer use cases. It's QD1 IOPS and latency that are the biggest limiting factors with high-performance SSDs, and NVMe dramatically cuts latency.

Problem is that NVMe drives are not yet available for mainstream use cases.

It would be great if there was a cheaper PCIe drive that tops out at, say, 1000-1200 MB/s read and 500-600 MB/s write, but offers far higher low-QD IOPS and lower service times thanks to the NVMe interface.

I did this migration myself and ran into the same issues more than a year ago, and this answer sums up my experience.

At 500 GB, the SSD 850 EVO only slows down slightly when the SLC buffer is exhausted, and there is no substantial performance impact at 1 TB and 2 TB.

@OliverSalzburg: I'd still prefer the PRO drive over the EVO drive as it has more reliable MLC NAND with a higher endurance rating and a ten-year warranty. If you're not using the drive that hard, though, the 850 EVO may make more sense, but be sure you understand the technical differences between the drives before you buy.

There's absolutely no tangible difference in endurance between the Pro and the Evo.

For 500/512 GB: Warranty on the SSD 850 EVO is five years or 150 TBW. Warranty on the SSD 850 PRO is ten years or 300 TBW.

Nobody has ever shown a concrete link between warranty and endurance.

(Storage is given in GB and TB, but endurance numbers are calculated using GiB and TiB.)

In any case, I'd consider the MLC drive more reliable than the TLC drive, even with Samsung's 3D NAND technology.

Also IMFT's 3D NAND uses a smaller process than Samsung's 3D NAND, which makes it cheaper but slower and less reliable.
