Q: Windows 10 takes 2+ hours to boot

user1780242I am running a Dell T7600 workstation with RAID 5 configuration on a Perc 310 adapter running Windows 10. I just converted my partition from MBR to GPT. I changed the Bios to boot in UEFI mode. It wouldn't boot using any of the existing UEFI options so I used a Macrium USB boot drive to gain acce...

Bob
o.O
Sounds like a driver...

I'd say its raid
But a T7600 should be pre-UEFI I'd think

12:40 AM
one assumes it was working fine before he started messing with it :-) just get him away from it, and MSes wonderous self-repair features will kick in and everything will be fine. I am still wondering if anyone actually advantages from the self fix features, when all we see here is it collapsing in on itself.

uh oh, windows server doing the "preparing network connections" crap againn
it dos it 5ever
6ever, 7ever, until I have to go up to the attic and press the power buttons with 1000 metric newton-poundds of force
it's like watts per meter kelvin but much more intuitive :>

is the oldmud Hour of power, with the liters of juice, running wattmiles

12:57 AM
how many minutes are in a dollar?
(1 U.S. dollar) per (Euro * gbp) = 0.628057211 U.S. dollars^-1
good deal
if you look at google earth it looks like notch's house is being remodeled
or maybe m$ is modeling it for him
so it has panels everywhere
anyone remember when microsoft was heading towards integrating windows in the home?

It would have worked if apple did it first :-)

sure, yeah, DOS didn't work because apple didn't do it first
had 897087897560 viruses
covered biweekly by danooct
finished RAID reconfiguration without a hitch

I already have to re-boot my central heating system, wasnt really interested in busting more stuff. Cool thing about appliances (what once was women) dont put up with that stuff not working.

does your central heating system have a /bin/ folder or a system32 folder by any chance
if so, you need to delete it right away
wow
diskpart totally violated the rules of CLI
DISKPART> select volume D
DISKPART> extend

DiskPart successfully extended the volume.

DISKPART>
really, without warning or confirmation?!
I was going to expand the system drive too!

Oh crap, do you happen to remember the password for the toilet, i really gotta go now!

1:10 AM
root
it lets you take full control of the flush

That requires admin privelages

yeah, it's gotta be root,root
you know how insecure e-toilets are these days

all those bacteria and viruses floating around

or just buy a new toilet, they have parallel flushing, with 192 flushcores at 4kL/hr

The update for the toaster stopped, now the front door lock isnt working

1:13 AM
reflash microwave firmware, richard stallman got a GPL one

Screw it, i am , , , it is after all, , , going through the windows

window: Permission denied
gonna have to sudo that
anyone here still use nt4 server?

!!tell 25759354 no

i would have to obligatory downvote that, just on principal

1:17 AM
yeah well me neither
instead, I use server 2k3
ntvdm64 plz

Why would you need to run 16-bit applications still? Geez... On a server?!

nah the server already does that

Bob
@allquixotic Because vendors.

1:36 AM

@oldmud0 someone on sf got rid of his last ones a few months ago.
I might have install media somewhere....

mail 2k8 media if you want this atrocity to end

someone back in 2003 probably spent $4000 on the monster that is in my attic

Oh its from my misspent and desolute youth, when I used to pirate software :p

1:51 AM
2k3 with 25 cals
who would do such a thing

how do you negative star chat posts

Someone running a terminal server?

sure, I dunno how to run the terminal server but it's probably not useful anymore
it is like melting steel beams with jet fuel they tell me

2:10 AM

nice ocr
I don't like xaml, just because it's XML

2:25 AM
@oldmud0 OCR? that's not OCR.
that's me typing the characters you typed

joking
you actually took your time, effort and energies to copy my ascii art exactly how I made it in its full stupidity

the underscores aren't rendered on a 1-for-1 basis in WPF for some reason
so they seem way too long there
i think you need only half as many

I can't star my own posts :(
But I will remember this

2:49 AM
What exactly are local security policies?
Where are they stored?
They're not in System32\GroupPolicy :/

Bob
@allquixotic monospace font pls :P

@oldmud0 it doesn't say in the UI for them?

nope
thanks a lot to m$
Found it, it's at %winroot%\inf\sceregvl.inf

3:14 AM
woot. figured out how to change the bloody language thing in Windows 10 where apps decide to use my native language instead of English

3:39 AM
asdf? adsf!!!

英語英語英語
It just says, "English" 3 times
By the way I still use good ol Winforms with good ol MainMenu
Sorry if that offends anyone
And I have no SSD in my computer
Again, using a computer older than 2 of my cousins might offend some audiences out there.
worst manual I have ever read in my life:
> When the airptane away from the ground in 30cm position,the helicopter will suffer by itself blade vortex to become unstable, we callit " effect response " ,when the helicopter weight lower. and the " elfect responso " affect will be bigger.

Bob
4:08 AM
@allquixotic So... current rumor is the iPhone 7 might drop the TRRS port entirely, and require a Lightning connection for wired audio.
Probably won't affect you as much since you're mostly on BT.

4:31 AM
@Bob @_@ wow
yeah, good thing I use Bluetooth :D

5:14 AM
@oldmud0 Arf.

6:08 AM
Hm, shiny
Tho I'm surprised you can power one of those directly

Bob
6:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Power what directly?

ANything. The RPI's kinda ...
Oh, they bypassed the USB port

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm confused.

@Bob they fitted a nano USB wifi thing into a pi zero by soldering it directly to the test pads for USB data, and siphoning power out of the main power input

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, but I don't really get what's so surprising about that o.O

@Bob: I thought they did it the semi correct way, and the pi 1 is kinda finicky over power draw

2 hours later…
Bob
9:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek There's a correct way?

No. But tapping directly into the power input seems dodgy to me ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The entire concept of the RPi is a bit 'dodgy' :P
Hey, at least they put some kapton on it.
That is a nice way to get network connectivity.

9:39 AM
;p
maaan, how did we get so cynical? ;p
(Oh, I love the concept of the RPI, Its just utterly impractical for the sort of stuff I use it for ;p)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Most of my devices are impractical, but I use them anyway -_-

9:53 AM
;p
Most of my devices are sensible other than the rpi, and maybe the remix
but the remix would make sense if any of our TVs did HDMI ;p
I need to set up my rpi again actually
but the monitor issues is making that too annoying

1 hour later…
Bob
11:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Any plans?

@Bob: not reaaaly

Bob
lol

If I extend the network again, maybe a streaming box for the main PC

mysql seems to be faster at reads than postgres hmm
With a time range filter
And mysql doesn't like a million parametrs

Bob
Who would've guessed?!

11:30 AM
Works with postgres tho
@Bob :P

Bob
(seriously though, if you're feeding it a million params perhaps there's a better way?)

lemme just split the data frame and load

Bob
@HackToHell chunksize?

Ahh, there's an option for that :D

Bob
@HackToHell yea, the option I looked at before suggesting :P

11:40 AM
;p

12:23 PM
postgres takes 21 seconds for a select and mysql takes ~70sec for a date range select with a million records

Q: How to make a installer for an self made operating system?

Ziyad MohamedI am making a operating system project. Everything is working fine, but i need to make a installer for it. I tried to search a tutorial at Google, but i didn't get anything useful. The idea is that it is a .iso file, you burn it to a CD, then on boot install it to a hard disk. Is there a tool on...

"Is there a tool on Windows i can do that? " whoa?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Uhm. I find it hard to believe this guy had anything to do with writing an OS.
Smells like school project...

@Bob what scares me is its a VERY low level problem, meant for a high level programmer...
and a total lack of idea where to start

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, no, it's actually pretty easy. If you understand how an OS works. Put a mini-OS on the install media. Simple as that.
Heck, even if you didn't, you could probably fiddle with a Linux init script (on LiveCD/USB) to do the install.

@Bob actually writing an installer from scratch? Assuming you weren't stealing bits from other OSes when they weren't looking? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The basic principle is fairly simple. The hardest part would probably be hardware compat (drivers), but since your OS should support said hardware in the first place... that should already be figured out.

2:07 PM
If it is a school project it would be more suitable for a group rather than an individual.

Bob
Apart from that you could just write an image over to the permanent storage, once you have access to it.

@Bob see, we are pulling possible answers out of thin air already ;p

VTC "too broad"

I was thinking DD

Bob
That's assuming the OS can actually boot from removable media. And that's a reasonable assumption.

2:09 PM
@DavidPostill yeah, but rather than modhammer it... I figured I'd let the crowd here chew on it a bit like pilfered footwear ;p

Bob
Basically summed up as "boot yourself and install yourself"
@JourneymanGeek Looking at your comment - those are nice-to-haves for a polished OS, but not necessary for a basic "installer".
Basically, the core of what he needs to do should be simple and bleedingly obvious if he's actually written an OS.

http://mikeos.sourceforge.net/write-your-own-os.html
"This document shows you how to write and build your first operating system in x86 assembly language. It explains what you need, the fundamentals of the PC boot process and assembly language, and how to take it further. The resulting OS will be very small (fitting into a bootloader) and have very few features, but it's a starting point for you to explore further."

Bob
Anything on top of that is too vague a question anyway.
The fact that he wants "a tool" is a bit of a giveaway... just copying bits and pieces without thinking about it.

I hear some cracks from laptop...
Can it be battery?

@Boris_yo Your screen is about to explode?

Am I playing with fire here?
Last time I checked the shape is normal. No inflated surface.

Sure its not the speakers?
Is there any unusual warm spots?

2:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek You mean on ejected battery?
Bright spots maybe?

If there;s bright spots on your battery, its glowing, in which case RUN.

Battery's on fire?

@Boris_yo did you buy the battery on a black friday super special deal last year :-) what type of battery does it use? a pack of cylindrical cells, or the li-poly puff monsters which can baloon up into breaking stuff

@Psycogeek It's original.

3:12 PM
well it is probably dead , once they reach an actual 80% capacity holding, they go downhill fast(er) , assuming the calibration or method of reading the thing uses knows anything.
Just toss together 50 AAs , and get on with it :-)

@Psycogeek Have you ever bought studd from non-authorized dealer?

3:44 PM
*stuff

@Boris_yo of course, all of the above, a dealer that is not shown on the companies own web site is more likely to sell a clone or a old or refurb or whatever. in the same sence a non-authorised dealer could have something that is just fine. A authorised dealer could still (possibly) sell unbranded knockoffs, and could still get a Great Deal on some crap they need to unload. The more likely parts are like 10-90%

@Psycogeek Frys sell Razer Headphones and they are not in company's authorized dealer list.

Define frys? Does frys , like many other people now have a (frickin) Marketplace, where they online run through a checkout anybodys products?
Because frys itself , would normally not sell Fake Branded clone items, much junk possible clones, and much branded, but less likely to sell Fakes that the laws would have issue with. because they have a B&M presence that is needed to be upfront and survive

i wonder about the BT stuff, the one i was going to get once, was a Simple "reciever" that ANY thing could plug into. one high quality BT reciever and amp, and any headphones ear buds or ear plugs that i already have to plug into it?
seemed to me to be a good idea, broken headbands, added weight inside a head piece that is already clampy and weighty, to be able to change to any style or frequency responce for the need.
Buying a Great excellent quality pocket reciever with long running battery and use it with anything .

4:01 PM
@Psycogeek What brand?

there was this cute sony thing, about the size of 1/2 a fountain pen, it looked ok. I was looking for anything that was Most compatable and least problematic (based on user speak, which is all that counts)
oddly for the rare instances that a wire doesnt work, and i use stuff like that , i still like FM (one primo fm transmitter) no delays from buffers, not direct cut out , no pairing, but Noise when it is to far away.
completly different is the wirelss mic stuff for the video, which is huge bucks and high transmit and digital and low-delay also, which has little to nothing to do with headphones.
a 1 frame delay 25ms , which oft exists with BT, when watching movies or playing games would drive me batty, because some of my job includes syncing audio to video, and lip syncking and all. it really Irks me when they dont match even the slightest ammount

@Psycogeek Can't find Sony pocket bluetooth receiver on Amazon.

one could also look first at B&Hphoto for things that are "good enough" to work , that they would sell them. it is more rare for B&H to carry pure junk. might not be best prices, but better place to see what Da Experty like people think
amazon.com/Sony-SBH52BLACK-Stereo-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/… there is one here? I dont see the round one there anymore. as long as i could change what goes in it (3.5mm head jack), which also means it has to have enough output power
least power possible is (weird) a crystal radio in-ear. in-ear phones are highly power efficient at getting sound to the ear. The rest on the ear outside ear-Buds are less efficient, i use those a lot portably. the Full sized speaker headphones, require the most power to drive. Variations in "OHMs" of the things change the percieve levels and impedance matching for "outputs".
That and Loud music, is what brings up the huge variations in how users (reviews) think about the power levels out of anything.
amazon.com/dp/B00C1CGZT0/… i assume something like this cheaper model, probably doesnt have long battery time , might not pair with new stuff .
"are the included headphones any good" no junked them :-) and that is what you cannot do with a complete system.

5:16 PM
@Boris_yo "HDMI with low network?" You're the first I come across that actually makes power plans. But yeah, given the rest of your screenshot I can see why... :)

5:26 PM
Hi my handsfree once disconnected doesn't get the sound .The sound plays through the system audio only
i.e although its connected the sound plays through system speakers and not the handsfree bluetooth headset
Here the sound activity is there only for the speakers whereas the Headst which is although set as defaultdevice doesn't play the sound
I can only hear the system sounds in headset

6:22 PM
This is not the tag you are looking for.... Finally got a sort of SW reference in a comment. :)

Flagged as spam because the linked video promotes, and its description mentions, DriveTheLife, which is known spam. This is in addition to the spammy "Make up to $100/ hour" text in the video description. The post is reverted to its original form. — bwDraco 2 mins ago
...and I think I've seen Alan Smith as a spammer several times before.
I'm still the spam hunter you know and love.

@bwDraco Flagged and it gone ;)

9:35 PM
@Boris_yo sure something like that (Bluetooth transmitter) to complete the "bridging" of any audio device. like i said i use a high end FM thing, and BT has some issues, sooo if you check it out, be sure to tell me how failed, i mean how much fun it is :-)
and 7 hours before needing a charge is Poop. for continual usage it will just be plugged in again, or you spend more time charging than enjoying. Battery ! stuff should have some.
"RAPID RECHARGE: Runs for an extended period of up to 10 hours on a full charge. No interruptions, no problems" 10 hours is "extended" now huh? i think people have now completly forgotten that a simple radio could run for weeks on battery, like the one in the garage . small electronics is wonderous tech, now we just need the nuclear battery still to run them.
That reminds me of a joke. This guy getting off the jet at the airport carrying 2 large bags, is headed off to CES (consumer electronics show) in nevada. He keeps looking at this watch he is wearing, when along comes this big texas suit. The texan asks the geek what is up with the watch? The geek tells him it is a tv, phone, video recorder, camera, wi-fi hotspot, tv, music player , that plays games, and . . .
(this joke was funnier when that didnt actually exist)
Anyways, the texas guy says i will give you $3000 for that cool watch. the geek says , he was headed to CES and it was just a prototype, so he couldnt sell it. The texan said he must have it and offered him $5000.
The geek hands him the watch and the texan puts it on his wrist and starts walking away. The geek says "hey wait mister, you forgot the batteries" handing him the 2 large bags.
