@Bob a lot of consumers use photoshop or photoshop-like apps.

Bob
1:03 AM
@allquixotic those do use the GPU more nowadays though
and they'reb not extremely intensive. maybe when you apply filters.

1:14 AM
@allquixotic the average core i5 with enough memory can handle that.

Anyone know of a system that allows you to use access cards to create one time use desktop environments? Basically, user is giving access card, when they insert it into the card reader on the PC it logs in and gives them a blank install of OS, then upon removing the card the image is wiped.
I've seen it in use at an internet cafe we used to play at.

hmm
Sounds like deepfreeze + using access cards for login?

Ahh yea, that might be it.

tho for the non persistant boot, the lan party house (google it!) had a nice approach

Yea, that was a cool read.

There's also a hack that uses a write filter from windows embedded that could work.
Enhanced Write Filter (or EWF) is a component of Windows XP Embedded and Windows Embedded Standard 7 which stores volume changes on another medium instead of applying them to the original volume. EWF allows the writes to be discarded or committed to the original volume later (either directly or through inaction based on the configuration). As this minimizes writes to a specified hard disk, EWF and FBWF (File-Based Write Filter) have become popular in enthusiast computing as a way of decreasing wear of solid-state drives on netbooks and CarPCs. == §Operating modes == EWF has three main operating...

o.O
> And when I posted about my house the other day, the very first person to +1 it on G+, before the post had hit any news sites, was Dane Jasper, CEO of Sonic.net. Yeah, the CEO of my ISP followed me on G+, before I was internet-famous.

3:58 AM
ugh.
One of those days.
/me is completely distracted. Oh and walked into a cat while distracted on ma phone.

Bob
4:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...a cat?
So your workplace is open to pets?

Local stray

Bob
Or is this an equality thing? They employ cats too? :P

Naw, on my way to work ;p
eww, hell no ;p

4:37 AM
(most singapore office buildings are off limits to pets except guide dogs. We also don't allow cats in public housing)

Does anyone have an idea why my fonts suddenly appear like this in a few programs? imageupload.co.uk/image/5nLX

5:23 AM
Very little information available at this time.
8B transistors, 12 GB framebuffer.
(Given that GM204 has 5.2B transistors, TITAN X GM200 should have 3072 CUDA cores in 24 SMMs.)
Rumored price is $1350, so this is out of reach—it would take my planned Alastor build outside of the $3000 budget (that budget is non-final and may be lower, perhaps significantly lower)

6:17 AM
hm. We are having a major, scary changeover at work and... so far so good.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Changeover?

Yeah, switching about half our users from (redacted) to (new shiny redacted). (redacted) is an important software that is essential to our company and we moved over to a new shiny thing that does the same thing.

Bob
Ah.

(blah, I have no idea what's sensitive and what's not ;p)
Especially since everyone in the industry probably use the same stuff ;p
hm. The security cam seems down this morning
s/morning/afternoon
Either forgot to turn it on or the roomie worked out a way to disable it.

2 hours later…
8:15 AM
Also, I am starting to know what I do not know ;p

8:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek you redacted to much, so I hardly even know what your talking about :-) If they changed software , how much "re-training" of the people using it will have to happen? slowdowns from changing method. Did they have a slow time in output need when deciding to change ?

None, cause (redacted)
(its not end user facing software)

@JourneymanGeek oh
Soo confused so did they redacts doing it, or are you redacted from discussing it?
Oh i guess i do not know what redacted even is, i thought it was similar to "retracted"
redact (rî-dàkt´) verb, transitive
redacted, redacting, redacts
1. To draw up or frame (a proclamation, for example).
2. To make ready for publication; edit or revise.
the 2 possible ways it can be used , are almost opposites of eachother. to plan something, or to Revise it which could include retracting :-)
Origins of the word say : English redacten, from Latin redigere, redâct-, "to drive back", which is more like retract

8:48 AM
What is the difference between logging off a remote desktop and closing the remote desktop without logging off ?

Bob
@sameer Closing without logging off leaves your session logged in and locked.
Your programs keep running.

@Bob any other way to over ride this behavior , I think this is only in window 7 not in XP

Bob
...what?
What behaviour do you not want?
Pretty sure they behave similarly.

@Psycogeek: I have no idea how sensitive the information is ;p

No I am running program from a another pc which requires the remote pc to be logged in with a specific user unfortunately if the user closes the rdp without logging off its not working but in xp its working
which means the in XP it is not locking

Bob
8:55 AM
@sameer Yes it is.
Locked just means you get the lock screen if you physically go up to the computer.

meh, this is one of the few cases where VNC is a better idea ;p

Bob
There is no case where RDP will actually unlock a console (local) session.
RDP sessions are only viewable from one location at a time.
This behaviour has not changed from XP to 7.
Also, your programs do keep running with a locked (inactive) session.
The only exception I can think of is some fullscreen program. Which is odd to run over RDP, to say the least.

Unfortunately I am finding difference in 7 and XP In my program I will check whether the user is logged in. If the pc is xp it is behaving correcly eventhough he closes rdp not in 7 :( also in VNC if the user locks the screen it is causing problem

Bob
"I will check whether the user is logged in" - how are you doing that? Why* are you doing that?
This suggests an error in the program that must be fixed, not an issue with the OS.

The os retruns the following error The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password.

Bob
9:05 AM
Once again, what are you trying to do?

In program I am creating a server connection to the remote desktop with the username and password

Bob
What, are you talking about a custom implementation of an RDP client?

If you need code

http://stackoverflow.com/q/10589440/3275057 this is pretty much same what I am doing
but the problem for me is if any user connects to that pc and close rdp without logging off then its not working the same is not happening in XP
so I thought this is something related to OS than program

Bob
@sameer What relation does this have with RDP?
Does the user log in with RDP and run the program from within the remote desktop?
Does the program create an RDP connection (acting as an RDP client)?

9:17 AM
there are two PC A and B I am running a program in A which connects to B. But If an external user connects to B with rdp and closes rdp without logging off I am not able to run the program in A. But if he logs off then no problem.
the same is not happening if B is an XP machine

Bob
@sameer Ah, there we have the full picture.
Not too sure about "if he logs off then no problem", but try that first.
Do you actually need an interactive user (i.e. manipulate desktop objects)? If not, then don't require it.
The alternative is to set group policies to auto-logoff after disconnect, but that's risky - an interrupted connection could lead to loss of work.

Interrupted connection means ? I am not getting the risk of it

Bob
@sameer A network issue, for example.
A brief network issue could interrupt the session, but RDP normally reconnects automatically. If you enforce logoff, it might log off before you get a chance to reconnect.
Just try not running your COM server as an interactive user, if you can.

@Bob thanks will look into it :)

10:00 AM
Computer Storage sales are like House sales , the marketing can be sure of one thing, as long as everything goes well there will always be a need for more.

Bob
Hm. GTX 960 is $230. About double the performance of my current GTX 560, and should run quieter.
Hmmmmm.
Nah, laptop comes first :P

10:29 AM
@Bob if you could save up to get ~1500-2400 cuda cores, you would not likely have to/want to update it again, as that should handle most of the 3D rendering FPS type games with some AA and AF and standard 60fps. but ~1000 cores ends up more often being a compromise on the high 3d render game stuff. making a fully usable gaming card more like $300 :-(

Bob
10:54 AM
@Psycogeek Well, I don't really care about CUDA core count...
Most games I play aren't too tough on graphics, actually.

a person could potentially play games for the rest of thier life ,time wise, without playing the harder to render ones. Given 2 lifetimes though :-)

11:13 AM
@Bob eh... I need to look at video cards again once I can afford my monitor upgrade
(Since my 660 handles gaming quite well on my current screen)
And DX 12 may make things interesting

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If I upgrade, at this point it's primarily for the temps/noise. My 560 handles my games juuuuust fine.
but yea, laptop comes first
that'll probably be a good $1500 if I don't compromise
...but I can't decide between the Clevo and a SP :(

;p
Very different systems tho!
The SP's more of a proper work system (hell, Its probably the only laptop after oldschool thinkpads that's a tool IMO), while the clevo's more of a desktop replacement/gaming box
And man, I love this keyboard.
(the stream. Like seriously, of all the chicklet keyboards I like, its the one on the cheapest system I've used.)

11:46 AM
superuser.com/a/885859/98855 <--this user is posting odd answers and links that do not apply. must be spam ?

Yeah. Free flags!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh... not really. The SP has known overheating issues with the i7 it uses, and the RAM is both non-upgradeable and limited.
Considering my need for VMs, that is an issue.
End of the day, both would suit my uses.
I'd hesitate to call the SP a proper work system - you can't actually use it on your lap (e.g. while travelling)

some laptop peoples have indicated that all the laptops "overheat" throttle when a person really gets using 100% cpu on all cores. That is one reason why i think a powerfull laptop should be encased in a aluminum breifcase (size) and have some big fans that could kick in when really working it hard.
Plus a grafics bay and an extra hard drive :-) which would all fit.
then this alum breifcase should be able to survive multiple drops , have a big ass screen of the 16x10 variety, and all created by the USER building it from base parts , out of a selectable set of parts that fit in said case.

12:27 PM
@Bob: There's very few laptops you can do that with

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Do what?

Use on your lap? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The vast majority can be used that way.
Just not the tablet convertibles that have a kickstand. Those suck.

wierd. In my experience most laptops I've used are too warm, even the X220

Bob
Also, SP3 is now old and SP4 is too far away, and I agree with @allquixotic on skipping Broadwell :P

12:36 PM
The stream is fine, but yanno
yeah, there's that ;p

Bob
Which makes the Clevo the logical choice.
Sure, it's Haswell. But the power efficiency matters less.

hehe
is pretty sure most of his hardware purchases are somewhat illogical ;p

Bob
Also, the same $1500 that'll get me that nice Clevo won't even get me an i7 in a SP3
It'll barely get me the 256 GB SSD/8GB RAM :\

....
watching tested, they're building a home server with an x99 0_0
@Bob: and you can upgrade the clevo if need be ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ya. Though I think I'll get them to install an extra HDD.
3 year warranty is nice :P

12:39 PM
lol
I guess

Bob
And I can't find even a 750 GB laptop HDD for $100 :S
It's got two mSATA slots...
I can keep the default SSD and add one for caching :D

Bob
Or even just use two SSDs with no HDD... 512 GB between them
Hm. Add Windows and it comes to... $1700, add HDD is $1800 o.O
still pretty pricey
that would get me... the 256 GB/i7 SP3
Hm. Closer.
But the Clevo's i7 is far more powerful :P
But battery life would only be 5-6 hrs max
Hmm. Decisions, decisions.
Urk... I also need to justify spending so much on a laptop
O_O

lol
There's that, maybe?

Bob
1:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek There's what?

Needing to justify :p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, basically I can get a simpler version for $800, or a good one for $1800 :P
I do need a new laptop, though.

Bob
No idea how long the current one will hold on for. And I don't really want to be caught unprepared when it does give out.
Sounds like a printer :D

Hello All! Please, can someone help me to distinguish mbr and gpt disk partitioning sheme on windows 8.1 does windows create one 350m system partion for gpt disk or it doesn't?

Bob
1:20 PM
If you install Windows on a GPT disk, then it must use UEFI-boot.
UEFI-boot requires a special EFI boot partition. If one exists, it might be used; if not, a new one will be created.

Yes i do

Bob
If you install Windows on a MBR disk, it must use legacy (non-UEFI) boot.
Windows will still install a separate boot partition by default on legacy/MBR disks, probably to try to keep things uniform. This partition isn't really special.

i have option to start uefi-cdrom or just cdrom , so i start uefi, and i have 300m + 100 + 128 m three system volumes for first drive. And the question is why windows sometimes does only one 350 sys partition (i tried install disk on different comps)
and does not add 100 and 128 parts

Well there are many thing i cant be sure of because i only use one method, but if you pre-format and layout where your going to install on windows 7 , it goes there. I use that method to not have the stupid extra partition. But i do not boot EFI method, but legasy

i suppose that windows in his infinite wisdom chooses the most convenient scheme for the hdd :)

1:28 PM
if you do not choose , it certannly chooses for you :-)

Bob
@Yurij73 Huh... good point, it's usually only 100 MB, IIRC. Maybe. I don't know? :P
Oh, Win7 makes a 100 MB one; Win8 makes a 350 MB one.

yes always 100
i deal with half-dead hdds that like to loose that additional partition and windows fails into endless recovery-restart

in win7 there is the "boot" one and there can also be a "recovery" one that plops in the small stuff for doing the minor repair stuff.

probably this recovery tool fail broken, so a good idea to check hdd for errors before install

oh stuff, the boot one, the one with the booting stuff on it is actually called "system" , more infinte wizdom
this after 15 years of me calling the "operating System" partition the "system partition" they name the small boot partition "system", and the Operating system to "boot"

1:42 PM
Ok, is now the time to practice with

All the pics of other peoples computers disk managment (google images) shows large variations google.com/…

2:09 PM
pics like this isunshare.com/images/article/windows-8/… show that it probably is still possible in win8 to have a All-in-One. and the largest ammount of pics show for win8 having one 350m "Efi (System partition)" and then the C:

2:20 PM
pics like this alltechtrix.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/… show . . . WTF :-) 500m EFI various reserved, and huge recovery partitions. certannly shows how malable it is (asuming it still works).

@Bob :(

3:14 PM
thanks for pics

3:26 PM
microsoft predicts youtube.com/watch?v=w-tFdreZB94 that everyone will have $30,000 displays , that everyone will manage everyone else, although no-one will be seen doing the actual work, and everything will be magic.
Really if your so elite that you wave your hand , and everything gets done (by someone else) why would you need to be using a computer :-) Surely those people actually doing the work can do that too.
I think they are not predicting anything other than how thier own life will work, making a glory presentation , then taking the rest of the week off. while the actual computer users suffer .

2 hours later…
5:18 PM
Just throwing out a question here; I just downloaded VLC to my win7 computer but it won't play the sound in the headphones; instead it shows up in a digital output alternative to my normal speakers which I observe when I click the sound icon. I'm using realtek software for the sound. Anyone who can help me?

VLC is capable of selecting the audio device it plays back to, unlike other softwares that only use the default playback device. Also possible that some codecs like AAC ? and AC3 can be set to playback "different" so when playing files that use certian codecs, it can be helpful to set the options/settings in those codecs. That just leaves FFshow, if your VLC is applying the FFshow type codec filter package mess , it is all adjustable there too.

Where do I find those settings?

for VLC, wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.1.x in the audio section 1/3rd the way down. I see it also can do a SPDIF too, as you see there.
For codecs, thier settings can often be found in the start menu, after install if they have a lot of settings they will also have an icon tossed in there.

In case it's a codec issue, do have any recommendation for avi?

For FFshow kind of stuff, an install of it by default would have a notification tray (systray) kind of icon over there on the right of the taskbar, from there you can access settings about 3 layers down. This Tray Icon may not Ever show untill your playing through the FFshow stuff. meaning it comes up when it gets called to use.

5:36 PM
Thank you. I can't really get it to work still, but thank you for taking your time :)

goldam to many freaking buttons :-) it even takes me quite a while to get everything set, and i avoid most of it by only installing seperated single item codecs (not codec packs)

Yeah, I also had the vlc set up in my native language so that was a major pain to change when everything is in english, including the how to change language :P

VLC "How do I change my output device in case I have multiple audio devices connected to my PC?

Open Tools -> Preferences (set Show Settings to All) and if you use DirectX, then Audio -> Output modules -> DirectX and Output device. If you use Waveout, then Audio -> Output modules -> WaveOut and Select Audio Device. Remember to press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled."
Ohhh so you gotta save and restart the program too.

6:03 PM
It may very well be that my teacher who made the films forgot to encode the audio...
Because it appears noone else could get the audio to work. At least I learned something new about VLC audio :P

oh, in windows the program "MediaInfo" can show what codecs things are using. and "Goldwave" is an audio program that can demux the audio off a avi so you can visually see the levels & waveform (like any audio editing program). so those 2 tools you can get a view.

6:38 PM
Morning all

7:19 PM
@CanadianLuke Evening :)

Ahh yes, all the differing time zones... I missed this place

where are you at if it's morning still? Hawaii? :P

Close... Time zone wise... I'm at GMT -8, Pacific Standard Time

Interesting. Well, morning to you!

I got another 30 minutes till I say no greeting, then 31 minutes till I say "Good afternoon"

7:30 PM
@CanadianLuke -8? That'd be only just morning then...
:)

you don't say good day around noon?

But, morning, nonetheless ;)
Nah, that's for the Aussies

And the brits :p

We just avoid contact with everyone for that single minute where it's awkward to be corrected to "morning" or "afternoon", just based on someone's watch

If you say morning to a swede passed 10 they will wonder if you're a little bit of a slob :P

7:31 PM
@CanadianLuke is that one minute gap where you get to swear an curse like a scotsman and be rude to people in general before the Canadian-ness kicks back in?

If it's in swedish i mean

@Mokubai No, we just go "Good something or other to you, sorry, thank you" and walk away :P JK

Morning = 04-9 or 10, but you should refer to it as pre noon if it's passed 9 and before midday :P

@Gemtastic Prenoon? Reminds me of "Preevening" by Sheldon Cooper - Just before the evening, but in the late afternoon

@Gemtastic We'd still call it "morning" but suffixed with a "well, just about" as we don't like all this "pre-noon" rubbish...

7:35 PM
@CanadianLuke Yep "förmiddag" lit. "before dinnertime"
Noon = dinner time

DINNER IS NOT LUNCH! GRRRR!

(A constant struggle Canadians face)

Well, back in the day, it was

@Gemtastic noon is lunch time, dinner is evening... :S

Old swedish worker tradition; you have dinner around noon and then you have a light supper before bed

or some days noon is breakfast...

7:37 PM
Nowadays we don't have dinner at lunch, we call it lunch, but the name of the day still remians; dinner or "Middag"
or maybe the word dinner is derived from the word for mid day because we used to have dinner then...
Noone knows ;D

So uhh... has anyone heard the term 'flea power' before?

@MichaelFrank flea powder maybe....

@Mokubai No, definitely flea power. As in, "advised drain [sic] flea power then plugged power cord back in...'

@Gemtastic Middag sounds very similar to the german Mittag, literally mid-day...
@MichaelFrank I see English words but am failing to find context with which to derive meaning.
@MichaelFrank okay.... jim-doyle.com/?p=2267
Never heard it referred to as "flea power"
standby power
It makes me feel better that people are responding to that article with "I've worked in IT for XX years and never heard it called that"

@Mokubai Oh yea, I knew exactly what they meant. I had just never heard the term before.

1 hour later…
8:56 PM
Just got a job in "Please check the recall feature in Outlook as it has not recalled the message I sent by accident."
2

@MichaelFrank explain to them that you can't take back an email; the only way Outlook lets that happen is it has a client-side feature that will delete the email from the user's side if they read the recall message before the original

@allquixotic Outlook/Exchange 2010 automatically deletes the recalled email if it hasn't been read yet.
At least it did in the test case I tried to prove it was working to this user. :P
But yea, I did end up saying "You should probably call this guy and beg him to delete it instead."

9:13 PM
I am looking to ask some questions on building a 3d printer. Is there a specific stackexchange site I should ask on?

@birdman3131 diy.stackexchange.com might be appropriate?
it might also be an edge case on robotics.SE
Hmm... looks like DIY is more for home renos. I guess Robotics would be your best bet.

thanks

@CanadianLuke I like the one about the microwave.... I wonder if people realise most microwaves start at one minute when you press the Start button.

@MichaelFrank Mine doesn't

@MichaelFrank Most in the UK go for 30 seconds
so I just hit the go button a bunch of times.

2 hours later…
11:39 PM
@DragonLord Missing Clippy?

Will try again.
Clippy seems gone
I'm trying to help abcdefg
Okay, that worked.

I'm trying to care about Clippy

No that's not me ;p
