what caused this question superuser.com/questions/871360/… to be scrolling? or is it me?

That's annoying.
@Psycogeek: looks like its quoted.

I was just going to "fix" it , but then i see no code ?
It is just the doubble spacing stuff. I will just try and fix it anyways.

Like that?
Ahh there we are.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek code block*
it's the four spaces at the beginning

12:32 AM
Thats wierd
the 250gb disk I was messing with stopped working
ahh it was still part of a storage space
which was complaining I 'lost' a drive

Bob
o.O

(I was using a VHD as a second drive for SS and 'broken' storage spaces don't turn up on disk management)

eSATA is a special kind of connector isn't it, different from SATA?
a regular SATA cable doesn't plug into a laptop's eSATA connector does it?

@barlop yes
@barlop no

@allquixotic thanks

1:16 AM
The protocol and logical signaling (link/transport layers and above) are identical to internal SATA.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA it is just sheilded better can carry power, wants well sheilded cabling, can extend the wires further, and uses different connection so it is not used improperly.
But with some minor adaption and powering the drive, we should be able to use it improperly just fine :-)

superuser.com/questions/266761/does-esata-require-power-source eSATAp carries power. The original eSATA doesn't. And apparently eSATAp can be tested for by plugging a USB in - eSATAp should support USB. from what I understood/recall anyway, from what I just read there!

that dont even connect the same , Now i want to beat on that guy who said i needed to be carefull messing with wiring stuff into it because it has power.
I was just plastic shaving a internal Sata cable to WEDGE ;-O it into the hole, it never did work :-(

it doesn't but even if it did have power, it's only 5V it wouldn't hurt you!

1:31 AM
suggest that it can supply both?
although i never got that far, because the controller(s) for my esata were usually marvell controllers which users say (and I also) suck. so I instead extended an internal off the Intel sata to the outside of my case.

Maybe that pic is an eSATAp
look at this one.

EUHP = eSATA USB Hybrid Port . wonder if it is usb 3 :-)
"Typically desktop, but not notebook, computers provide 12 volt power" that sounds logical.

1:57 AM
eSATAp (also known as Power over eSATA, Power eSATA, eSATA/USB Combo, eSATA USB Hybrid Port (EUHP)) <-- wikipedia
Also..
That point you quote about 12 volt sounds a bit scary 'cos consider if you plugged a laptop hard drive or any other device in there. It's potentially killed.
Any USB device is 5V and would die if plugged into a desktop eSATAp, if that quote of yours is correct
perhaps the desktop eSATA provides both 5V and 12V. The 12V seem to be an extra somewhere superuser.com/questions/435738/…

I suppose the 12V would not be located on the same pin as where the 5v would be expected.
Looks like the cool thing about "standards" is you can pick any one of the standards :-)

Modern laptop drives work on desktop power supplies fine
and by modern, I mean sata

and most of the laptop 2.5in drives are 5V powered only?

er... if there's a 12V power in they don't care?

We know some 2.5in drives that are not? the barracuda? although it is in a 3.5in casement?
and regular internal sata power connects provides a 3.3v connection too :-) but nobody is using it . They do these things to make it easy.

2:35 AM
3.3V is part of the standard. A lot of super early sata drives used molex - > sata power converters so it was safer to assume there's no 3.3 V

Bob
2:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek Two of my SATA drives still run like that (ran out of SATA power connectors on the 3rd drive...)

@Bob: exactly. IIRC some drives explicitly said they needed 3.3v, but in general, that's not used much
@Bob: I have 6 sata + 3x molex connectors max on my PSU. Currently have 3 in use
I doubt any of the drives I have in use need 3.3v ;p

Bob
> If you can formulate your question in 140 characters or less, feel free to reach out to us on Twitter. Just be aware that the response (including all code) will be equally succinct and cryptic.

;p
Oh, managed to get wake on lan working on my desktop
I'm not exactly sure what I did. I think I had to set up pxe boot, set the lan card as the first boot device, then turn off pxe boot 0_0
ahhh
I was gonna grab my ip address off gmail to test. One problem. Its got my ipv6 address. Phone and Werk are ipv4 only
(that's a wilhelm scream ahhh. Not a ahh of enlightenment)

What is the point of eSATA connector being different from a SATA connector? (when it's not eSATAp and so there's no power)

3:04 AM
@barlop: I've seen 'external' Sata brackets that are identical to regular sata
Prolly better durability

the brackets I suppose so yes, to fit a regular SATA drive. But i'm talking about the eSATA connector on a laptop
better durability hmm.. but a pain in the ass as it requires a special adaptor cable just to plug a regular SATA in there

sata is rated for 50 connections and disconnections. esata is rated for 2500ish

They talked about durability and the "lock" , which doesnt make sence when USb is all external connected and it does not use a lock. Here i do not like any of the wires to "lock" because a DogDozer (similar to a bulldozer but on 4 legs), could pull on the wires. i would rather have the wires come Out , than tear out.

Is "Creative ways to destroy/wipe 100 hard drives (in the fraction of the time of a write-erase algorithm)" a bad question for SU?

Remove 'creative' and it might get closed anyway, or become a popular question
orrrr

3:16 AM
Lots of possible answers. Each one likely to have lots of crosstalk or debate on degree of creativity or degree of usefulness. Large portions of it subject to opinion. I'd say it hits the slippery slope.

You could talk about it here.

do you know any alternative to peter nordahl's offline nt password recovery?

"research" on the web could find 101 ways. so some may downvote it based on shows no research.

(And I would say, arbour press, and hardened steel spike makes sense.)

@Psycogeek yeah so downvote the question I didn't just ask on the main site!

3:17 AM
@Psycogeek +1

@killermist +1 indeed.

@barlop: why do you need an alternative?

@JourneymanGeek it gave some error like "This user probably has a blank password"

Yeah I looked around a bit, but it seems "possible" for the methods I found to leave much data intact (i.e., drilling)

except the user did not have a blank password

3:19 AM
ahh. Maybe use an admin account to do the password change?

I know it's faster/cheaper to manually remove all the platters than it is to do a secure wipe. I don'
I don't know what to do with the platters though

@Louis: angle grinder? Thermite? shoot them?

@JourneymanGeek did somebody mention "NT password blanker" there is no such thing..
And Nordahl's offline NT program runs from booting from CD/USB from the BIOS
so nothing to do with running from an admin
it bypasses that
i've used it loads of times on XP systems.. and it should work on 7 though not this one

@JourneymanGeek Actually the grinder is a great idea if it is what I think it is. A drill bit that can "sand-down" is totally feasible
@JourneymanGeek Thanks

@Louis: there's probably grinding wheel that work with disks. Also angle grinders are a GCHQ approved way of destroying drives
@Louis: powertool, hand held, kinda like a mini disk saw with a abrasive wheel?
If you go that route, for god's sake wear eye protection

3:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yep, that's what I'm picturing. Warping, scratching, shooting, exploding didn't fly; there might be pristine mirror left. Gonna spin the abrasive power tool :#
@JourneymanGeek :)

I'd really much rather find someone with a commercial crusher for that. Much safer
(oh, and folk rent degausers apparently.)

@JourneymanGeek The degauser is the only alternative we can actually do... but it's too expensive being that the the cost is on going (intake can outpace the wipe-rate)

@JourneymanGeek Love the drill bit idea... something to do to keep from dozing off.

3:47 AM
@Louis Problem is that hard drive platters are very, very hard glass
You're going to have a hard time penetrating even one of the platters
When I did this with an ordinary drill bit and my old Toshiba hard drive, the bit only scratched the surface of the platter
If I pushed harder, the platter simply shattered, leaving glass shards on the floor :-(
Not fun
(The drive was opened up, making it harder to drill through them without slipping)

4:11 AM
@DragonLord I've always been confused by how metals are crystals, but that helps clear illustrate. I wasn't thinking about penetrating though. Pictured something like this, but hopefully flat: i.imgur.com/OcinICu.jpg
@DragonLord Just want to remove/destroy the surfaces.

4:39 AM
@DragonLord: Oh, I had an old deathstar that had a headscrash. Ended up grinding off just the magnetic layer. There's some pretty awesome pictures of that online

NEw million doller idea: The make-up printer :-) Select your style from conservative to whore on your computer, select from 105 templates like madonna or lady gaga , or even michael jackson, then alter both the color and style right there on your computer. Stick your face in the MU8500FP and in 10 minutes it is done.
The MU9500FP additionally comes with the supertwease application and the HR400 laser hair removal accessory.
and before you stop laughing cnbc.com/id/102066524 <--there it is already.

with the exception of the last picture that is pretty disgusting.. better to post a single link and a warning

Also quite unfunny >_>

yes i've noticed many people posting stupid pictures and animations just post rubbish

and ugh

I hope none of them try stand-up comedy

I wanted to test if I can ssh into my home system from my phone at work. I... kinda realised I have no idea what my IP address is, and the one system I can remote into and is usually switched on... is in my backpack right now
@barlop: more likely standup and leave comedy ;p

5:54 AM
or stand down!

there are already people testing printing skin grafts , the DNA printer. So i think the make-up printer should have come before that. and the industry would have the money flow for it.

@Psycogeek Yello...

@JourneymanGeek I happen to have a static IP somehow, and I added a subdomain for it on my private domain a while ago :P
Not actually hosting anything at the moment, though...
@reirab - I used to tell students in our simulator that I had spotted a dog on the runway when I wanted them to execute a go-around. One time a student responded "Don't worry, we'll win." and landed. — Steve V. 8 hours ago

@Bob: I can usually get in via crd. My desktop is off, my laptop is in my backpack, and CRD dosen't do fedora so I don't have it installed in my home server ;p

6:56 AM
fun part is if I could ssh in (or connect to crd) I can essentially turn on my desktop from my phone ;p

7:40 AM
@Psycogeek Just to think how many heads they poison...

superuser.com/questions/675619/… Isnt the reason that Ctrl-v and Ctrl-c was not used in the dos like command prompt in windows, was because Ctrl-c meant to Break (to stop the current process or script)

Bob
> SIGNATURE ON DELIVERY REQUIRED
> SIGNATURE MUST BE OBTAINED
...annnd it was left on the porch
hey, I'm glad I don't need to go pick it up
but still, so much for the big allcaps labels :P

They had the "burning bush" in front of your house sign for it.
that is why the signature is "I am"

8:10 AM
@Psycogeek Do you think brightness/contrast should be adjusted here?

@Boris_yo i think your glass stuff needed something to refract and reflect? so the faucets show up. i do not know if adjusting the levels anywhere are going to help that. Speaking of levels. if you have a program that does a histogram and allows for a "levels" adjustments it can be better to learn how to use that vrses fighting the contrast and brightness sliders.

@Psycogeek I have XnView and Paint.NET...
Tried auto-level in XnView and it sucked...

Xnview has the excellent conbright and gammasat , but its levels thing does not have the middle slider like photoshop or corell paint has.
so the brightness contrast and gamma adjuster are probably the most control.
Someone went on (another) downvote Rampage on the SU site. 2 pages of downvoting.

Windows 10... I need some general tips on things to try here; my start menu stops working. As in Windows key do not bring it up, the "Search the web and Windows" text box do not work either, it's there, selectable, highlight-able, but you can't type in it.
This only happens on one machine... I run a lot of Windows 10 machines...
Is the start menu a separate process from explorer?

Bob
8:51 AM
@Erik Do keep in mind that this is pre-release software.

no shit

Bob
Though it does seem the new menu is a tad laggy at times.

we're not talking laggy, it does not show, at all

Bob
Report it as a bug.

Did you try clearing all the caches and mru kinds of things? could be there is "too much" stuff hanging out.

8:57 AM
Its windows 10. Its probably not a new enough system for that kinda crud

they always have all those recents , autofills , pre-guess the user , history, search based on the first few letters and all? if something killed one machine. Even unexpected odd charachters wedged into the wrong places can cause programs to freak out.
Path and enviroment variables type things? the run and search out of the start menu have (in other windows oses) specific current directory and path things it would use that could vary from opening the command prompt.

9:32 AM
@Psycogeek I can install GIMP. Maybe it has what Photoshop does in that regard?

I would not install a whole program to do that, i was just saying it is a good method to learn, if you do not have it, then there are the other 6 methods

10:03 AM
@Boris_yo if you have previously purchaced photoshop CS2 and have a legit licence for it, adobee sort of releaced that program from its activation need, being tired of constantally dealing with users who paid for it. pixscotland.com/blog/2013/adobe-release-cs2-suite-free-for-all <-- this is a completly false and misleading statment , because it is not a free for all :-)

10:20 AM
@Psycogeek Yeah, they just want to lawsuit everyone when they least expect it.

They just did not want to deal with me over the phone trying to activate it again :-)
I had spent a total of 4-5hours of employee wage time, keeping it activated, which i calculated at california wage to be more than i spent for both the original photoshop and the update.
The last activation, they just hooked me up with some backdoor stuff, which i have written down what it was, but it still does not mean anything to me.
(all because i had various parts of the OS more secured (imo) than a normal system would be)

10:38 AM
the download was 340m direct from adobee and has all the updates and stuff, so it was easier than pulling out the cd even, and going through the upgrade stuff that never worked right anyway.
it is still 32bit :-( so it can only use up like 3gig of memory even on a 64bit system.

12:16 PM
Whoot paycheck

sure but you spent it already :-) and there is taxes still.

12:39 PM
quick close on this question or flag the actual answer as spam? superuser.com/q/172384/172747

12:51 PM
hm. I wouldn't consider the answer spam
and the question itself isn't too bad

Is there a tool that allows you to view which means that anybody could do advertising for products here?

@Psycogeek Well it's like don't show - don't tell...

Bob
1:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek Now you can buy... things! :P

1:41 PM
@Bob: Not before feb :/
has almost no cash in his account
but yes, that is an option now ;p
Tho, I might start looking at some upgrade from feb onwards

2:02 PM
@OliverSalzburg "curtain files"?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Maybe he meant "certain"
Dunno, I just wanted to remove the software-rec aspect

Ok
I thought the word had been introduced in your edit

2:34 PM
Any idea how to lasso-select in XnView?

3:27 PM
ooh one of my seniors is now working at facebook London ._.

When I play Spotify on my desktop, my phone will realize that. When I then press Pause on my phones lockscreen, it will pause the music on my desktop. Guess what happens when I then press play on my lockscreen! :P

@OliverSalzburg These connected devices are sure creepy
Google Now, creepier with every update
4

@HackToHell I was referring to the fact that it will then play on my phone, instead of my desktop >:(

@OliverSalzburg lol
too bad ;p

5:16 PM
> When I play Spotify on my desktop, my phone will realize that.
@OliverSalzburg How?

@ThatBrazilianGuy It's a licensing restriction, Spotify is contractually obligated (by record companies) to ensure that only one device is playing at a time
It's probably done server-side
@HackToHell Because data == $$$
It's supposed to be used only for legitimate purposes such as targeted advertising, but the potential for abuse is mind-boggling

I disabled Google Now and the Google App on my Moto G. The camera shortcut on the lockscreen is gone (WTF!?)

Pretty sure Google has some pretty strict internal rules on how the information can be used, but everything changes if there's a security breach or a Google affiliate decides to break the rules
I don't mind targeted advertising (relevant ads are useful), what I'm concerned about is abuse
I think Google has done its part to cut down on government spying
I have faith in Google using the information legitimately, but there are entities who want to use this data for ulterior purposes

@DragonLord that's basically how I feel. it's unfortunate that Google has painted an enormous target on their backs saying "HACK ME" now that they have so much data collected on people... everyone who has a reason to want lots of personal data, browsing habits, search terms, etc. is gonna go out of their way to get to that data.
some will try an above-board route like bribing paying Google for it; others will try to steal it.

@allquixotic Did you score well?

@Mokubai 20th percentile narcissism, 40th percentile Machiavellianism, 2th percentile psycopathy :P
so I'm really not a psychopath; I'm a little narcissistic; and I'm fairly Machiavellian

Well I suck at it apparently, cause I only got 4, 20 and 6. :(

8:12 PM

@allquixotic You killed your little dudes!

I made a question on pt.SO and people didn't downvote me :D

9:19 PM
How does Jabber work?
In Decemeber of 2014 some Russian hackers hacked all the passwords of Jabbim and now I can't connect to my Jabber account
Should I contact Jabber or Jabbim?

9:30 PM
@JANORTS Jabber is the name of a network protocol, not any particular server. you would have to contact Jabbim.

I made a question on pt.SO and people didn't downvote me :D

what's pt.SO?

ok, thank you

@ThatBrazilianGuy use a different lockscreen? ;p
@allquixotic: or threaten google with 'legal' stuff - like with the americans and wikileaks
sigh
On one hand, my raspi is under utilised, and I don't really need another small form factor box. On the other hand, people keep making cool arm stuff ><
Its a core that's often used in Nases. Has msata and mini pci-e (so you could throw in a small ssd and a wifi card),
