The protocol and logical signaling (link/transport layers and above) are identical to internal SATA.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA it is just sheilded better can carry power, wants well sheilded cabling, can extend the wires further, and uses different connection so it is not used improperly.

But with some minor adaption and powering the drive, we should be able to use it improperly just fine :-)

although i never got that far, because the controller(s) for my esata were usually marvell controllers which users say (and I also) suck. so I instead extended an internal off the Intel sata to the outside of my case.

That point you quote about 12 volt sounds a bit scary 'cos consider if you plugged a laptop hard drive or any other device in there. It's potentially killed.

Any USB device is 5V and would die if plugged into a desktop eSATAp, if that quote of yours is correct

and regular internal sata power connects provides a 3.3v connection too :-) but nobody is using it . They do these things to make it easy.

3.3V is part of the standard. A lot of super early sata drives used molex - > sata power converters so it was safer to assume there's no 3.3 V

They talked about durability and the "lock" , which doesnt make sence when USb is all external connected and it does not use a lock. Here i do not like any of the wires to "lock" because a DogDozer (similar to a bulldozer but on 4 legs), could pull on the wires. i would rather have the wires come Out , than tear out.

When I did this with an ordinary drill bit and my old Toshiba hard drive, the bit only scratched the surface of the platter

If I pushed harder, the platter simply shattered, leaving glass shards on the floor :-(

@Boris_yo i think your glass stuff needed something to refract and reflect? so the faucets show up. i do not know if adjusting the levels anywhere are going to help that. Speaking of levels. if you have a program that does a histogram and allows for a "levels" adjustments it can be better to learn how to use that vrses fighting the contrast and brightness sliders.

Tried auto-level in XnView and it sucked...

Xnview has the excellent conbright and gammasat , but its levels thing does not have the middle slider like photoshop or corell paint has.

so the brightness contrast and gamma adjuster are probably the most control.

Windows 10... I need some general tips on things to try here; my start menu stops working. As in Windows key do not bring it up, the "Search the web and Windows" text box do not work either, it's there, selectable, highlight-able, but you can't type in it.

This only happens on one machine... I run a lot of Windows 10 machines...

Is the start menu a separate process from explorer?

Did you try clearing all the caches and mru kinds of things? could be there is "too much" stuff hanging out.

Its windows 10. Its probably not a new enough system for that kinda crud

they always have all those recents , autofills , pre-guess the user , history, search based on the first few letters and all? if something killed one machine. Even unexpected odd charachters wedged into the wrong places can cause programs to freak out.

Path and enviroment variables type things? the run and search out of the start menu have (in other windows oses) specific current directory and path things it would use that could vary from opening the command prompt.

@Psycogeek I can install GIMP. Maybe it has what Photoshop does in that regard?

I would not install a whole program to do that, i was just saying it is a good method to learn, if you do not have it, then there are the other 6 methods

I had spent a total of 4-5hours of employee wage time, keeping it activated, which i calculated at california wage to be more than i spent for both the original photoshop and the update.

The last activation, they just hooked me up with some backdoor stuff, which i have written down what it was, but it still does not mean anything to me.

(all because i had various parts of the OS more secured (imo) than a normal system would be)

the download was 340m direct from adobee and has all the updates and stuff, so it was easier than pulling out the cd even, and going through the upgrade stuff that never worked right anyway.

it is still 32bit :-( so it can only use up like 3gig of memory even on a 64bit system.

I have faith in Google using the information legitimately, but there are entities who want to use this data for ulterior purposes
