@JourneymanGeek have you looked at a full HTML report from the power thing in win7 ? >Powercfg -energy -output Somefilename.html , at the bottom there seems to be some of the "state" info, like S1 s2 s3 ? tons of "other" data, but not really a "this monitor is off", but then again :-) my monitor is on . I know a little about states, and they areally are not about monitors, but cpu and standby states.
Probably more like getting that info from the GPU card and that array of stuff , somehow would be the only thing that really knows.
It is easier to know if a screen saver :-) is running.
For those 2 people who still use screensavers , ever since standby was a way better choice.

12:37 AM
weird things a person could derive from the GPU: AMD/ATI locks the video memory high when 2 monitors are on, that info seems to be easily discovered, along with GPU load, and fan speed and all, some assumptions could be made about the screen standby state, based on hardware info from the gpu. On known entities, when using an aero interface.
the DWM.exe (desktop windows manager) process, which has something to do with the aero and themes stuff, is so Booorrring :-) it would only reveal information about the state it was in, in tenths of percents of CPU usage.

Just FYI, this site has only existed publicly since 2009, so you're probably confusing it with another site if you've been using it since 2004. — heavyd 6 mins ago
No relevance to the current conversation, I just thought it was awesome, given the question context

My Starbucks Gold card just came in today
Was reading random stuff and ran into this: espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/7967064/…
This is funny: Ochocinco (now Chad Johnson) loses wallet and iPod in car break-in, but gets angry about losing his Starbucks Gold card above all else
He got his wallet back, but it was missing the card
Fortunately, Starbucks promptly sent him a replacement
I know this was more than two years ago, but I find it a bit silly and funny for a sports star to vent like this over a coffee card
Sure, it takes a good deal of time and money to hit Starbucks Gold, but it still sounds rather silly
@iKlsR, was something flagged?

I tend to prefer the home made stuff, indian style ;p

@JourneymanGeek Spammy, yet reasonable quality
It's these borderline cases that always trip me up
Do I flag all of the user's posts as spam, or raise a mod attention flag instead?
The choice is pretty clear for users who post low-quality spam answers, but it's less obvious for these sorts of cases
@JourneymanGeek, your take?
I remember the old "please flag with care" boxes...

3:50 AM
Depends. Single spam flag will do in this case
LQ answers... flag em all

@JourneymanGeek I suppose you'll just let the community judge on these flags

Pretty much

@DragonLord free ? as in baitware, or as in shareware, but no intention to be a freeforall utilities this is a business.
the business is doing marketing, while it fits right in, if users had found that to be the thing to use or buy , they would say so. in fact a real free utility gets more free advertising than any business could spam.
The users rep does not add-up either, why because 1upvote and 1 downvote = some rep still
(unless it was you running around downvoting him)
so according to the users themselves the vote taley for his posts are net-Zero

Q: More RAM = increased lifespan of computer?

warshipDoes installing additional RAM increase the potential lifetime of a computer? For example, if approximately 100% of a computer's RAM is used on a daily basis, does this have a "wear and tear" effect on the lifetime of a computer? Would upgrading more RAM be less "stressful" on the computer (and...

6:08 AM
@karel Interesting question. I'd say "opinion based" and off topic though. More ram means less swapping, so the answer is probably "yes", but for negligible values.

According to the logical principle of Occam's razor replacing the functionality of any moving parts in the computer with solid state parts would extend the life of the computer, but applying that principle in this case while logical is also "opinion based" unless there is any objective evidence that adding more RAM would increase the potential life of the computer by more than a negligible amount, even though IMO it would extend the useful life of the computer.
That's the purpose of a razor, isn't it, it's to shave a few bits off in order to gain an incremental benefit?

6:41 AM
occam's razer has nothing to do with that ;p

6:58 AM
Fair usage of Occam's razor according to the Wikipedia article on Occam's razor is suggested by the cover picture: Sunlight over Earth as seen by STS-29 crew -- if sci-fi has insights into technology to offer, then so does Occam's methodology of lex parsimoniae, even though it is 700 years old.
Anticipating the logical criticism to this is that it's specious -- pleasing to the eye but deceptive.

Q: Feedback Requested: Stack Overflow design update

JinAs you can see, Meta.SO looks a bit different today. Over the years I've gotten a lot of requests to "redesign" Stack Overflow. I've always felt SO's site design had good usability and was very functional. However, I did and do agree, aesthetically, it could use some polish. Today's new Meta the...

meta Stack Overflow also has a design update
I'm guessing it will come to Super User in 6-8 weeks years

Great move forward
It's about time to modernize the Trilogy site design
SO/SU/SF can look so bland compared to some of the other sites
Especially SO

@Sathya I like it

@Bob I have ceiling fluorescent light, or maybe it's halogen? The bulb is long and emits cool temperature light and is considered energy-saving. I have only 1 bulb because the other in second slot no longer worked so I took it out. I assume if I bought replacement I would have 2 bulbs that would provide sufficient lighting, though it would come from ceiling. The tent I got has foldable cover on top so I could fold it back to allow light inside.
@Psycogeek The further away - the less dimensional effect you say? When you shop online, do you feel product photo that has dimensional effect conveys product better helping you better evaluate product that you cannot touch physically?
@Psycogeek Yes bought this one and another one 1M of cable length smaller. I don't know if it's a cat5 or dog6 but they have very flat cable. Both fail to establish link between Dell E6420 and lenovo G560 laptops unless I set up splitter or other routing device in the middle.

12:44 PM
Him. Both gig e?

Bob
@Boris_yo Well, if you think there needs to be more light, try adding a lamp. Better to supply more light sources than try to get the camera to capture more, since the latter sacrifices other things.
Generally, I prefer warm lighting for indoor photography. But it does depend on your subject.

@Dave I found it on reddit
Do a reverse image search

i... did... a what?

I really need to learn JS

I've just done that
JS

1:30 PM
@Dave Google Reverse Image Search Google

I came in as a dev, with C sharp and HTML and CSS, they explained HTML5 but it turned out they wanted all of that and a JS developer
That was a difficult 6 months!!
Do you know how ti works
I mean, doe sit just read the name of the file
or does it actually read the bytes and try to match against a databvase?

@Dave JS is ... hard to learn
It simply refuses to throw meaningful errors when it does throw them :/

well... yes and no
Are you using the console in Firebug or similar
That normally provides enough
although with JQuery, it often doesn't :( @HackToHell

Yeah I was using JQuery to handle some clicks and stuff

Since doing more JS, I've realising I've moved more away from JQuery to do it myself due to these types of bugs and oddities

1:38 PM
I also tried using WebSockets with node.js and atom.io
I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't connect
No fucking errors
In the end wrote a GET/POST apish thing :/

Hmmmm. I am possiblly still going to have to go down the node.js route. I admit, I'd rather not :S
:)

Bleh anything that uses Javascript sucks >.<

ha ha ha ha
well, I'm still amazed at what it can do. From a flat web to suddenly desktop like environments...

That being said, I should find a good book about it.
@Dave yeah, all the more reasons to learn it.
You can write a Windows Desktop(Metro),Windows Phone,Android,iOS(Cordava) app using JS
JS is everywhere !!!
I suppose it's the next big thing ;p

yes, definately agree. I finished reading a W8 kick start video ... thingy... and it covered that too
so a powerful languae
Although the GUI thing is very over used IMO
For example, when we leave the room, our icon falls out (from right side of screen). I guess they know this is overkill hence why they leave it off their main site :)

1:53 PM
@HackToHell: JS is a hammer for webdevs ;p

ha ha, so is C++ . I have created a hammer. No, 50 hammers. 50 instances of hammers? Wait, no, that's just a pointer.... hang on, what?

Welcome to the 61st installment of the Stack Exchange Podcast, brought to you by okra (yes, that okra). On our show today are David Fullerton, Jay Hanlon, and Joel Spolsky. It’s been a long time since we last did a podcast, so let’s get started.

First point of business: we have an iPad app! It’s got a snazzier feed and a fancy live preview in the Compose view. We’ve been getting more posts from mobile than we expected, because computing via iPad is the way of the future (according to Joel), so lots of features in the iOS app are now better optimized for posting as opposed to reading. …

craigAt my parents house I used my computer hooked up to my stereo, I got my sound through there. It always sounded much better than typical cheap little ÂŁ20 computer speakers. I like this question

Bob
@JourneymanGeek s/source/DAC/ ?
Otherwise you're kinda mixing "source" with amplification and others.

Oh, my choice there is intentional

Bob
Ah.
I just find it odd you mention amplification explicitly but not the DAC stage.
Heh, these certainly look fancy: catchoftheday.com.au/event/40248/product/…

I was just considering the speakers
You could pair up a nice pair of bookshelf speakers, and replace a reciever or gigantic speaker amp with a class T or D you could slip into your pocket

Bob
Hm. Quick search => some people saying they're better than the m50 :P

9:15 PM
M50s are currently anti-hipster ;p
(IE, people hate em cause they're popular)

Its one person fanboying ;p
And I got my ATH M50s ages ago, and they were already hit with the AH effect by then

Bob
@JourneymanGeek there's a couple more on other pages, but I can't find good detailed reviews unfortunately

ya
I can tell you from personal experience (and dog ears) that the ATH m50 is solid and sounds awesome
Bit bassy, but I prefer neutral sounding gear anyway

Bob
@JourneymanGeek but rarely discounted - this pricing puts the ues under half the m50
That's also a factor if they sound similar enough :P

9:26 PM
@Bob: There's that
But well... audio is my other expensive hobby ;p

Bob
I really need to find a local store with at to test with

ya
I'm really lucky about that
also, take anything you read on head fi with a healthy pinch of salt ;p

Bob
Not like I can find better comparisons :/
YouTube? Hah.

Your youtube movies will sound sooooo much better with these speakers. ;)

9:32 PM
Sorry, I'm just a little disgruntled with all the BS I got off the audiophile community ;p
I even got a ban somewhere ;p

That is because you do not use the right audio cables. For full inmerssion in that rich sound you need a LP player, real time digitise it and use the right digital Ethernet cables. Forge then by moonlight from pure silver. Coat them in gold and sacrifice a rooster below an ancient oak. Only then will you get that full, rich sound.

rofl
And magic rocks!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek seems everyone agrees it's rather bass-heavy with anc turned on
Bleh

The most fun part I've seen yet were Ethernet cables for digital audio. With one end marked for the amplifier.

Which is wierd
ANC tends to volume boost

Bob
9:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek well anc also turns on the internal amp

yup
anc is also useless in many situations

Bob
lol

On a plane? Best thing since squeeky toys. In most other situations, less so

Bob
Actually, I could see it being useful on the train
Constant low-freq noise
...but the high-pitched scraping against the rails won't help
And I don't like over/on-ears outdoors anyway

yup
I tend to use a pair of creative earbuds outdoors
pretty good passive attenuation
(or a specific model from daiso I can't find any more)

Neither do I ;p
