People have opinions about not using adhoc though? heck I don't even know what it is other than a ketch phrase. it will use WPA2 and password? so I am wondering what other issue it would be?

4:12 PM
It's because it's easier to hack one of the stations,I'm guessing. Or cause a computer could imitate the access point? I don't know, honestly.

Error when upgrading/installing squid3 on Debian Wheezy:
Setting up squid3 (3.1.20-2.2+deb7u2) ...
chown: invalid group: `proxy:proxy\r'
dpkg: error processing squid3 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 squid3
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Yes, the group and user proxy exists in both /etc/passwd and /etc/group. Any ideas? It seems like an error in the package (given the extra \r)

5:00 PM
@CanadianLuke this is not an error in the package
\r is the linefeed character; you edited /etc/group or /etc/passwd using a Windows line ending text editor

OK, are there details there to help me track down what's causing this?
Nope, I never touched them with Windows
Should I use the flip command on it?

try installing tofrodos and running it to convert Windows-style line endings to UNIX-style line endings in /etc/group and /etc/passwd
if the package installation script itself has chown proxy:proxy\r\n in it, that would be a pretty embarrassing and major error
mandatory testing of packages before uploading them to the stable repos should prevent that from ever happening

OK, I installed tofrodos
Ran fromdos against both the etc/passwd and /etc/group. No change, still the same error

@CanadianLuke I searched the Debian bugtracker but I'm not seeing anything obvious

Damn. I'll try asking over on the Linux SE
But thanks for the help, I do appreciate it :)

5:10 PM
the last version was posted on August 29: lists.debian.org/debian-changes/2014/08/msg00025.html
if there was a critical package bug, it would have been fixed by now
something has an inappropriate \r that doesn't belong
maybe /etc/init.d/squid or /etc/init.d/squid3 needs a fromdos?

No change

Q: Squid3 failing to install via apt

Canadian LukeI am trying to update squid3 on my Debian Wheezy box, via apt-get. When I run the upgrade, it's the only package that does not install. # apt-get upgrade -y Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 n...

Yes, I actually called you a friend :P

upboat, all I can spare at the moment, sorry

5:26 PM
Only one? Fine... :P

@CanadianLuke my secret reserve of upboats I had stashed away in a wooden barrel under my desk is getting low, sorry
I can only spare one per HV

... HV?

!!hv

Ahhh, OK

!!wiki joke

A joke is something spoken, written, or done with humorous intention. Jokes may have many different forms, e.g., a single word or a gesture (considered in a particular context), a question-answer, or a whole short story. The word "joke" has a number of synonyms, including wisecrack, gag, prank, quip, jape and jest. To achieve their end, jokes may employ irony, sarcasm, word play and other devices. Jokes may have a punch line, i.e., an ending to make it humorous. A practical joke or prank differs from a spoken joke in that the major component of the humour is physical rather than verbal (for example...

No comprendo, senor!

it's sort of an in-joke here that we misappropriated the term "help vampire", instead of its original meaning, to mean "someone who we like, who rarely visits us unless they have a problem they need us to help them solve"

he called you a help vampire and then said it's a joke

WilliamHilsum is the epitome of the in-joke version of the "help vampire" term

@allquixotic Command lukeno learned

I understand, I'm just being difficult

6:07 PM
I hate perl. But I am determined to make it do my bidding!

6:27 PM
@npalpatine you like making things do your bidding, don't you

Anyone got a spare vista iso image around?
Otherwise I will install windows 7 to a vm, start and about installation of X14-63453.exe, and then create a vista image
.... only to upgrade it to windows 7 as an exercise

6:40 PM
Yup, one sec
@Hennes 32 or 64?

64? Do 32 bit system still exist? (wel except for XP)
peer. Hmm, I do have 64 and 32 bit win7 images. So either could work.
I just never consider 32 bit anymore 3xcept for embedded devices and arm

OK, I only got a 32 bit version available. Downloading it now, then I'll post the link

ta
Running though MCTS 70-860 Configuring windows 7 atm
It might already be old, but I expect that it will stay in use for a long time.
Learning a few tricks and getting certified is going to be nice.
Especially the certification since my current job ends on 8 dec this year
And HR looks for that.

Not a problem. I just read a very generic post by a Microsoft guy about building your proper "lab environment"

I got spare hardware next to me, but I am just going to use a few VMs on my desktop instead.

6:48 PM
The recommendation by this guy was to use old computers you get for free or cheap and virtualize, lol

I got a quad of old computers, but *slow*
(a netbook with 2GB ultra slow flash and a 500Mhz celeron,
Two core2 quad 1U servers,
And an older core2 laptop)

my new phone I'm getting soon is faster than most of those systems lol
except maybe the core2 servers

The core2 server are 1) spare parts for my main (off-site) server and the other holds my backups.
I bought a RAC for it and I just power it on when I need to make a new backup
Which is more expensive than just walk to it and press the power button.
But the DRAC is more fun
Meh, out of VTC votes.

7:08 PM
@Hennes jmc.sd57.bc.ca/~lbarone/VistaBusiness32_sp1.iso <-- requires a product key, but for upgrading right away, you can obviously skip it.

Thanks. COpied and downloading.
It will probably last long enough to install and then upgrade.
Granted, I never upgraded vista before, and I suspect I never will again after this.
I am a 'wipe and clean install guy'

@Hennes Yea, you can't do that for an actual "upgrade"... Unless they changed things

nods.
So wipe all user data, all account, delete all programs. Unjoin from domain.
Then upgrade.
Or in this case: I am not going to install anything on it.

If you need help though, I have gone through it a few times

I'll try to remember that.

7:12 PM
Pretty much, zoom through the OOBE, then put in your Windows 7 disk. What edition of Windows 7 are you using?

I got a win7 ultimate DVD which I got from microsoft when I attented their new product introduction for windows 7 (with legal key) and a downloaded win7 enterprise trail
The last should not need activation for 90 days.
I hope to have finished this well within that time.

OK, that'll be good; cause of the editions, you can't upgrade from this Business ISO to a Home version

The course mentions I will need enteprise or Ultimate for some of the win7 things.
I always used my ultimate CD for all (1) of my computers.
Except for one test where I tested ho wmuch more space was used in an updated installation of win 7 (no SP) plus updates compared to win7 SP1 plus updates.
That was about 100MB
(that included wiping system restore points and running ccleaner)
I am temped to open this website at work, press F11 (full screen) and walk away to get some coffee.

7:31 PM
Which site?

This will make you either drool, or cry. I'm gonna go with cry. imgur.com/gallery/47c72

7:47 PM
The harddrives aren't mounted straight :(

Cool, but so totally ridiculously impractical.

8:05 PM
#Alienware's industrial design never ceases to amaze me, and nowhere is that more evident than the new #Area51. http://www.alienware.com/area51
Also, it turns out #Alienware has partnered with #Roccat—I've been using their outstanding Kone XTD gaming mouse for a year and a half.

8:36 PM
@DragonLord still horribly expensive though.

8:59 PM
I've always wanted to build my own desktop PC, but I just don't have the money...

9:11 PM
@DragonLord When I was at the computer shop, that was the funnest job, building custom gaming PCs for people
Except, you know, I don't get to burn them in with fun games myself...
