Bob
12:00 AM
Either this is anycast or I'm being routed allllll the way to the US west coast.
@MichaelFrank Could you do a tracert on 8.8.8.8 for me?
Oh wait you're at work

Tracing route to 8.8.8.8 over a maximum of 30 hops

1     1 ms     1 ms     1 ms  165.44.3.253
2 165.44.3.253 reports: Destination host unreachable.
;)

Bob
lol

12:34 AM
Am I a horrible person for wanting to link a music video of 'let it go' every time someone wants to install XP on a modern system?

Bob
lol

@JourneymanGeek I was thinking about XP 64bit , on this latest install, but software and hardware makers have taken the opportunity of MS dropping it, to stop all support of it totally themselves.

IN FACT....

12:39 AM
Make sure you turn on captions.

(protip, turn on the subs)
lol

They didn't just burry it, they cut it up into pieces, sucked its brain out, and filled it full of lead, and sunk it in the Mariana trench

Who's decent with Powershell here?
An empty pipe element is not allowed.
At \\pathofscript\get-folders-files-and-size.ps1:35 char:5
+     } | <<<<  export-csv -notypeinformation "$outputPath\$outputName - $date.csv"
    + CategoryInfo          : ParserError: (:) [], ParseException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : EmptyPipeElement
What's going on here? :S

Bob
12:56 AM
@MichaelFrank You're gonna have to provide the source file.

[cmdletbinding()]
Param(
  [Parameter(
	ValueFromPipeline=$true)
  ][string[]]$paths,
  [string]$inputfile,
  [string]$outputName = "folders-files-and-size",
  [string]$outputPath = "."
)

BEGIN {
	Set-StrictMode -version 2

	$date = Get-Date -format yyyy-MM-dd-HHmmss;

	if($inputfile) {
		$paths = import-csv $inputfile | select -expand path
	}
}

PROCESS {
	foreach($path in $paths) {
		$files = Get-ChildItem -Recurse $path | Where { !($_.PSIsContainer) }

		$size   = ($files | select -expand Length | Measure-Object -Sum).Sum

Bob
o.O that was fast

lol, I was going to paste it before... but decided I'd see if I can figure it out first.

Bob
@MichaelFrank ... ... ... you're trying to pipe from nothing

(it's not my script)

Bob
12:58 AM
the foreach block is a control block
it iterates through the body, with each iteration containing a $path that's one of the elements of $paths
it does not output anything
so the pipe from the closing brace of the foreach is wrong
...I think

Yea, that's sorta what this is saying as well.

Bob
If you use foreach-object instead, it might work better
@JourneymanGeek ...I swear that one sounds different

@Bob: Maybe, I've never actually heard the original version of the song ;p

Bob
O_O
oh, it's just different relative volume between vocals and instrumentals

@Bob Yea, it sounded odd for me as well.
Anyway, foreach-object throws a different error.
Unexpected token 'in' in expression or statement.
\\test\get-folders-files-and-size.ps1:22 char:25
+     foreach-object ($path in <<<<  $paths) {
    + CategoryInfo          : ParserError: (in:String) [], ParseException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : UnexpectedToken

Bob
1:09 AM
...that's not how it works

I don't know ._.

Bob
$paths | foreach-object { $path = $_; otherstuff; }
or foreach-object -inputobject $paths { $path = $_; otherstuff; }
you can keep most of the block intact, you just need the $path = $_ at the top

1:22 AM
(it's thinking) :o

@Bob It makes the outputfile now, but doesn't actually put anything in it.

Bob
shrug
@MichaelFrank I don't think I can help more :(

That's cool. I'm just trying to play around with this while the guy that wrote it is away.

Bob
@ekaj I don't know if others would. I certainly would not recommend it.
Networking protocols have evolved quite a lot in the last two decades.

1:33 AM
I'm aware, but a lot of people seem to still reference that book.. the age is why I was questioning it

Bob
@ekaj CIDR only became a thing in 1993.
There's a good chance that book is based on classful routing.
Which is very outdated and not relevant since that year.

I'm not worried about classful routing, just the basics of the TCP/IP stack

Bob
@ekaj It's one example of something that's changed.
There's certainly more.

any recommended reading for this century? I'm looking around a bit more still

Bob
Some people like tracing the whole history.
I personally like to start up-to-date and go back when necessary.

1:37 AM
Well apparently there's a second version of that book..

Bob
@ekaj 2011. Pretty good.
If you want something more textbook-ey, there's Computer Networking - A Top-Down Approach

Have you personally used that one?

Bob
Briefly.

hm, that sucks
the 32 bit windows 10 vm on the brix is being super slow

Bob
o.O

1:40 AM
what do you think of windows 10 so far? I haven't messed with it yet

Loving it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Is it updating?
They put out a new build.

I'm still using 7... never did make the step to 8

Bob
Added a notification centre thingy :P

@Bob: trying to update now

1:46 AM
worlds largest skyscraper , was going to be built in less than 1 year en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_City_(Changsha) Sky City 1/2mile tall building is still just huge hole in ground google.com/maps/place/…
(all the hype it is cool to have an update on)

Bob
wtf PlanetSide2 was trying to update on my laptop too
pretty sure I never installed it there

@Bob pwned
Check your phone as well ;p

Bob
in fact
it's not even in my library!
wtf
that's right, I didn't go through steam
then... why the fuck was it downloading a 10 GB update?

maybe it just knows what you like..

...it's not on some kind of free weekend is it? I have a feeling I may have it in my library as well.

1:48 AM
apparently you like 10GB downloads without being notified

Bob
@MichaelFrank it's f2p

oh, right.

@Bob: preview build install failed on the 32 bit vm
its ongoing on my main vm tho

@Bob I think I'm getting closer :)

2:09 AM
1 hour 50 minutes until Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth unlocks!
I'm preloaded and ready to go

You have time to help me with my powershell script then! :P

screw powershell

It wasn't my choice!

but it is my choice to not want to use a language that tries to "unroll" your arrays like a cat obsessed with toilet paper

@MichaelFrank did you do a paren count? for every { there is a } ?
(or does some scripting tool do that for you?)

2:18 AM
Yea, I checked that.
@allquixotic Fair enough.

stuff makes my head hurt , why you no put in all kinds of visible feedback in to show what is going on when run?

It's not my script. I was told to run it then the guy that made it went home.

somehow keep spewing out the stuff it is working with to the screen, when it comes up blank , yet still feeding it in, then you can see. but that's because I am only lamer scripter, who couldn't even do that, writing "hello worlds" at each point in the script :-)

2:44 AM
@Bob ..turns out I fixed it. :)
Well, sort of. It isn't exactly working as intended on some lines.

0_0
This looks neat... but wait, MS writing awesome software for android? DOTH I SEE A AVIAN PORCINE EX FENESTRE?

No, Inbox for Gmail looks neat. ;)

3:14 AM
$files = Get-ChildItem -Recurse $path | Where { !($_.PSIsContainer) }
$count  = $files.count
count fails when there is only 1 file in a folder. o.O

3:38 AM
So apparently I need to force an array @(...) when running .count on something, but @($files).count still exhibits the same failure.

3:53 AM
shrug the developer guy will be back on Tuesday... I guess he can fix it then. Home time for me now!

Blah. Tried to install that lock screen. Not available in my country. WTF

4:30 AM
I did not know I wanted to do this: i.imgur.com/PsYeA0w.mp4

5:11 AM
that's insane, who is going to clean up that junk strewn about? and your pants after :-)

5:57 AM
@HackToTell You need to read some of Thomas Pornin's answers on security.se
To reboot on a debian-based system, I typically do 'reboot' as root.. I know you can also do 'init 6' and it will reboot. Is there a different between the commands, i.e. one has a graceful shutdown while the other just stops everything?

Thanks for your answer. My pc is not a laptop. I fixed the problem by kicking it, I'm not joking, I kicked the case out of anger, the pc went out. Started it the next day and never witnessed the problem after ... — Ascorbin Oct 17 '13 at 8:27

that's a good article..

6:25 AM
such fun, with my new install(and updates) Realtek instead of speakerfill delaying to the "surround" speakers, it now does some sort of dolby decode (artifact filled) and now i have to apply a different correction method.
Before it was speakerfill, which did delays as much as 50+ms (that's 2 bloody frames of video), now only Effects Room will fill.
Yea they Still manage to screw up onboard audio, 20 years later , now that it is fully 100% usable sound, they messed it up with software .
to think i could have just kept the $20 stereo speakers and never known :-)

lol
My speakers are probably at least 15 years old

I want my creative soundblaster from the 1800s back :-)

Old Altec Lancings, they're great for what I paid for tem
Built like brick shithouses.

6:48 AM
only off by 3ms, soo that is not bad, it still sounds sort of tin-can like.

7:48 AM
I am not being pickey, got it to 1ms, and now of course it is out-of-phase. meaning while one wave on one speaker is going up, the other is going down, dependant on the frequency. another reason it should come out at the same moment exactaly.
i am not trying to make a noise canceling system.

I like my speakers

8:07 AM
@Psycogeek A quick help here please?

@Boris_yo what up?
the resolution of the adjustment for room correction (for time) maxes out at ~1ms so all them number i have fought through , were not really changing it,

toilet float adjuster?
or medical equipment made in china :-)

I need to move this plastic screw inwards but there's white plastic below it that locks it. I need to regulate the level of water in toilet's water reserve.
Or else I will drown.

Am I in the wrong room??

8:17 AM
@Dave You are in my WC mate.
Care to lend a hand? I need to fix this.

no this is correct room, he has to adjust it to use his android on the toilet properly :-)

Had to tell to land lord who bought new rubber but the issue is completely unrelated.

@Boris_yo where is the plastic that locks it other than the valve plunger ?
seem like you just either flush, then adjust, or cram the arm down into the water, and adjust it then.

Well, it depends @boris_yo. The image you bring up is both of us (or all 3 of us) in a toilet... and you ask me to lend a hand. The images which spring to mind, whilst flattering, are not those I'd normally have :D :D :D

Bob
6 hours ago, by allquixotic
but it is my choice to not want to use a language that tries to "unroll" your arrays like a cat obsessed with toilet paper
lol, @allquixotic predicted your issue! :D

8:29 AM
@Psycogeek The plastic that lock screw is on the handle below screw. There's no way to move that plastic. It is always parallel to screw.
@Dave Wrong because I mentioned "to fix this"
No dirty thoughts please.

I'm going to ask a stupid question, but, despite how it looks, can't you pull it out adn then turn it?

@Boris_yo ahhh, i see, there is a "detent" kind of thing going on, to keep it from moving on its own. so you flex it a bit and bump it over the thing, like stripping gears. it is not like they put a proper release mechanism in .

Can you do that?
the 2 is supposed to be turn/rotate

@Dave no i cant :-), last time i had to get one of these , I got ones that would hold up longer :-) with the landlord whining and moaning about the price the whole way.
this one is obviously designed for complete collapse and failure in a short time, drowning the residents so the massive population of china can then move in :-)

Yo ucould probably fit a lot of chinese dudes in there as well... hmmm
Did you try brute force with a healthy dose of ignorance?

8:40 AM
applying same level of ignorance when you break it , and the landlord asks "what happened" :-)
I donno, it just broke, i didn't touch it.

@Dave Nope. There's a thread inside that directs the screw. The only way is to screw carefully and wiggle plastic before while trying to screw in. I did this because I had flexibility of screw but the further I screwed inwards, the less play I had with this.

See, he should at least have the all plastic FM 400 :-) which would last at least 8months

@Psycogeek My toilet is different at all. It's not advanced.

Cant even buy a brass one anymore. because they could only sell ONE of those, and it would last some 50 years. how is anyone going to make money doing that?
@Boris_yo could be you can shim it? make a plastic cap thing from pen parts, and fold it down and shove it on the end of the screw.
get a package of these :-) and DIY the float mechanism
Put an Arduino in with a water sensor, and solenoid kit in, hook it up via Bluetooth to your iphone
Make a cool APP with fluid dynamics that represents the bowl fill level, temperature, and PH levels.

Q: Are there any unmanaged gigabit switches available without indicator LEDs?

Kevin MorseI need to put a switch into my home theatre stack and am looking for something without blinking indicator LEDs. I’ve debated taping over them but that looks ghetto and actually requires some precision taping due to the small size and location of the LEDs. Has anyone come across an unmanaged giga...

OT, but I learnt something new about my switch.

what i never would have figured, having an ample supply of electrical tape and a razor, they have actually made Gradient grey stickers of all shapes and sizes and levels of darkening for the purpose of reducing the output of leds general. I dubt they look "ghetto". I know everytime I back them out, i end up needing to see them again, so a slight darkening without damaging the product, should work on everything.
Black them out.
craziestgadgets.com/2012/06/12/… here is an example of led dimming stickers
this looks like a better choice

A: Getting rid of Group Policy

ArakelIf you are the administrator, you can disable the functionality by going to the services console (services.msc) and disable the "Group Policy Client" service. In any case I should add that if your user account has indeed administrator privileges, that should not be happening in the first place.

I have wanted to try this disabling of the Group policy service myself before, but avoided it. If GP could be disabled by killing the service, it would make it rather "insecure" I assumed disabling it could engage it all :-) or some other terrible thing.

10:48 AM
@Psycogeek: There's a button on my switch that turns it off and on ;p

@JourneymanGeek the leds? that other person indicated it only worked till the next reset? which would include a power outage also?

I'd guess so
I could test, but that would knock me offline ;p

Course here a power outage is more like a fire drill anyways :-) everything takes to beeping .

(also, my internet connection is over the same power line that's powering that router XD)

Hi.
I have a funny user agent string here, does anybody know what system this is?
> Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/36.0.1985.143 Safari/537.36

10:56 AM
Could be safari for windows

@JourneymanGeek But then why the "Chrome"? And isn't Safari for Windows obsolete?

good question.
ANd obsolete? No idea, I wouldn't ever install that on my systems
hm
Looks like chrome

@JourneymanGeek Indeed. Funny that they have such a string, but maybe they had their reasons. Thank you for finding that, I somehow got lost on a couple of pages promising to deliver such information.

@rumtscho: My google-fu is excellent ;p

Does anyone have a W8 phone?

11:07 AM
@rumtscho that is so cool, i did not know they could be combined :-) I should try that and see if they quit saying things like "your browser sucks try this one" on web pages.

hm, off hand, most of the regulars run android.

Yes, I'm on Android
but again, it's removed all of my contacts (which are not on my SIM)
I didn't make any changes to the device

@Dave I have one, for development

And I'm an MS guy (I'm not a lover of them, but I work in .NET) and so can program Windows apps ets
@Oliver, do you konw if you can do the following
With email, save an attachement, and then view it in Explorer (or similar)
With email, can you reply to an email and edit the original thread?

@Dave Let me boot it up and I'll check

11:14 AM
Thanks Oliver :)

Well, when I download an attachment, it asks me if I want to open it in my explorer app, then downloads it to Shared, where I can view it with whatever I like

oh coool
and do you know if you can edit an email in a thread when you reply?

@Dave Just tried, no. I can only copy text from the thread, not edit it. At least with the default mail app

Ah, but you can copy though?? Hmmm. i don't think I could do that on my WP7.5
Thank you so much @OliverSalzburg
@OliverSalzburg, do you also use Outloot 365
3

@Dave please don't edit the typo!

11:29 AM
ha ha ha
oops, that wasn't meant
*Outlook
:)

@Dave No, we have our own Exchange server in-house

Ah ok.
I'll ask any way as it may be similar question reagardless as it's more about .ost files
I think Outlook 365 uses .ost files

But I'm not really familiar with the phone anyway. I just use it for development

I can't understand what they are. As in, how they differ to pst files. Is it .pst file has ALL information, .ost has 'some' information (The downloaded information (emails) from the server)
So, at any stage, using 365 it may only show the latest 200 emails, when I try to access more then it pulls more from the server and my .ost file grows in size

11:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think that latest meta question calls for you

Eh, he also invited me to chat. I'll deal with it when I get home.
He did say he torrented it so... Meh

1 hour later…
Bob
1:18 PM

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, usually you either have a disc or you simply install the free upgrade

Bob
though I'm not sure what the actual use is

2:08 PM
@Bob honestly, that's "the issue" 99 times out of 100 with powershell. so, yeah.
@Bob render with more pixels then downsample? yeah, meh, not sure... probably not much of a difference if any

Actually, a lot of people do this for screenshots I think

it's expensive enough as it is to render at 4K res; if you're going to do it, you may as well do it on a native 4K display

apparently its a brute force way of doing the same thing as some antialiasing methods.

me, I'll be sticking with 1080p on my desktop for years to come, since I'd rather have higher FPS and not need as large of a GPU (or set of GPUs) to achieve maximum detail on high-end games
if it takes two maxed-out Radeon HD7970s in Crossfire to render at highest detail at 60fps at 1080p for a given game, then it would take eight HD7970s (or the performance equivalent thereof) to render at highest detail at 60fps at 4K for the same content.

I'm doing 1600x900
However, most games still let me max out everything ;p

2:13 PM
if each HD7970 is worth about $280 now, then you'd need $2240 worth of GPUs to do that, and probably a bit more, because top-end perf comes at a premium

(And I kiiiinda want a 970 ._.)
I'll look back at that in 6 months ;p

I might plan a full system upgrade for Q3-Q4 2015 (and I'm memetically, per RA guidelines, one of the few people who actually goes through with my plans for purchases of stuff, so this might actually occur)

;p
@allquixotic: I'll probably be doing that once I get a job ;p
And I do buy most of the stuff I plan to. Other people just beta test for me ;p

Broadwell i7, Adaptec 8805 RAID controller, 64GB RAM, 1 TiB SSD cache drive, continue using existing 4 x 4TiB HDDs, 2 x R9 295X2
that's my ideal system build based on what's currently available or slated to be available, but if AMD puts out some newer GPU architecture I might get that instead

(like @OliverSalzburg's speakers ;p)
@allquixotic: 4 gpu cores? o0

2:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, 4 x GCN 1.1... should be able to handle 4K so if I decide to buy a 4K monitor later it'll be OK.. if not, the next wave of high-end games should run well
multi-threaded renderers are standard now, more or less

Right now, I'm pondering nicer speakers (which has passed the 3 month rule, but I keep getting other things I need to spend money on)

and more and more games are offering 64-bit builds (some, ONLY 64-bit, like Star Citizen and Planetary Annihilation)

32bit is the past anyway ;p
Pity nvidia dosen't have something like crossfireX

yeah but until very recently most game devs were living in the past, shipping 32-bit binaries with single-threaded renderers
@JourneymanGeek er. SLI?

@allquixotic: naw, the one that lets you use dissimilar cards

2:20 PM
I don't think CrossFireX lets you use dissimilar cards

There's one varient that does ._.

they have to be the same generation and the same ASIC IIRC. they can be clocked differently and stuff but that's all
my R9-280X and HD7970 are the same silicon wafer, even though they're different branding, different cooling, different clocks

@JourneymanGeek that's like Nvidia Optimus

ahh my bad

2:46 PM
I wish I could star just part of a message
*stars the "ahh" but not the rest*

2:58 PM

A: Question deleted with no recourse?

Journeyman GeekThe primary reason for me deleting this was that I considered it unanswerable in its current form - I figured it would be deleted anyway. For the record, this is the question as it was What I see? "I'm trying to install osx yosemite from a .app package that I downloaded from a torrent." Uh ...

Not entirely sure I can pack all that into a comment

it helps to have shown the original Q, without seeing it I could ASSume that is what it looked like :-) and it is , what I figured it would look like

3:27 PM
@Psycogeek I tried to play with it and through wiggling and giving it a few turns, it is now seems to be okay. Finally can rest.
I have exchanged a lot of messages with a person and I see they have been quoted everytime from previous exchanges. Clicking on it pops up huge list of previous exchanges and I think it increases message size each time with cumulative effect.

Is there a way to tell Gmail to stop quoting previous messages?

every e-mail client I have ever seen has an option or settings to adjust the quote previous, even if it did not you can nuke it during reply.
Other than that, everything worked :-)
add that system restore just made things worse. Is it no wonder I turn that stuff off.

3:48 PM
@Psycogeek Gmail is not email client.

@Boris_yo what is it IM chat stored in the cloud?

4:01 PM
I see only one way in the HTML based part of g-mail, show trimmed content and select it all Ctrl-A and hit delete. all those options, quoting previous options do not seem to be found.
Almost all of these HTML based mails can be used with a regular client like Thunderbird, where the ads don't show up :-) with the HTML part of it very valuable still to checking via any ol computer you happen to be on, like the library computer, or a friends computer.

@Psycogeek Yes, no... Not chat but email exchanges.
Best marketing ever!
Instantly convinced!
Or should it be "Lazy pitch-man's pitch"?

I sometimes like to trim the previous messages of an e-mail down to relevant to the reply. so I may cut them to one sentence. or do the "multiquote" where you put your input under their input, and designate it somehow.
an E-mail could be a day or a week before a person reads it, or they may have 101 other things going on. with a refresher of the discussion, the person is not confused with the reply.

4:26 PM
@Psycogeek Good advise but trimming every time will eat up your time.

@Boris_yo but if I respond to people like say DealExtreeme does, I think I lose more time and money that way :-)

@Psycogeek You lose money when responding to friends?

Meaning there is a lot of really bad seller to buyer communications going on.

@Psycogeek Do you drink green tea from China? Know if it's safe?

green tea is an arbitrary term. Chinese herbs can be powerfull stuff, more people seem to be interested in as drugs. a bit more natural type of drugs, but the point of them being effects on central nervous systems.
drugs came from trees and leaves and licking monkeybutt :-) and eating poisonous mushrooms and all. so those methods are natural, like taking peyote and looking up into the sun for the day :-) But it no less alters the brain functions.
Just depends on where did you want to go today, and how many brain cells will you need tomorrow :-)

4:50 PM
@Psycogeek I had radiation in mind...

Bob
5:04 PM
@allquixotic I'm currently teetering between Broadwell or Skylake with DDR4
Jumping in with the last DDR3 gen... ehhh
But there's always something better coming up anyway.

did you hear about the problems with the new x99 (or whatever it is called) chipsets and motherboards?
I only heard people referring to how the MB manufactures are having problems with them. they were indicating that was why the lack of support for the previous verions.
I also wonder how that DDR4 thing will go. with all the present memory issue that exist.
Being on SuperBreakdownUser though , is like being a cop, it seems like everyone is failing badly :-) when the larger percentage are doing fine.
@Boris_yo looks like a herbivores delight, something Timothy Leary would feed his cow

5:34 PM
newegg.com/Product/… this asus board is so bad only 40% gave it 5 stars . and there is talk of it taking the chips out with it. the MSI board is at terrible reviews also.
These things are amazing and complex, and tiny wires everywhere, and speeds on the edge of oblivion , and massive memory at extreme speeds, and a density of cpu connections that is amazing it works at all.

6:03 PM
Hey, when did Western Digital come out with SE drives, compared to just RE? What are the differences?

what color? from what I read at WD, the RE designation itself is about raid, the low TLER kind.

It's like a light blue... I'm looking at hard drives from New Egg

wdc.com/en/products/internal/enterprise here is some letter designation definitions.
wdc.com/en/products/internal/desktop and this is the colors.

Thanks. I'm looking for a 4TB RE drive on NewEgg now, that uses SATA, instead of SAS

@Bob it's either that, or man up and grab Haswell-E or Broadwell-E.
the "low-end" E parts are not all that expensive (the mobo is, but not the CPU). and still more cache and faster overall than a mainstream.
it's hard to justify not getting the top-end CPU if you go mainstream, because it's not all that much more expensive. but on -E it's $1000 for the top one.

Bob
:\

Haswell-E is probably a good buy for the next 12 months (now until Q4 2015). It's way faster than Haswell, has more PCIe lanes, and DDR4.
only reason to wait for Broadwell-E is if you're expecting some kind of magical new instructions, but lately they've been pretty underwhelming
and I'd expect Haswell-E to be competitive for 4 years minimum

@allquixotic Haswell-E does DDR4?

@CanadianLuke ahh I see, it is like a Cavier black, in the alleged to be durable type with raid TLER settings, and looks good.

Bob
Still, my current computer is still going strong. As I've mentioned before, it's in a state that's not too easy to upgrade piecemeal...

@Bob Yes.

I'm just pricing out a new, proper server

Bob
If I see another GTX 780 for $250 though, I'll probably take it :D
(they were out of stock everywhere in this state)
Hm. Samsung 840 Pros are getting cheaper too

6:44 PM
@CanadianLuke I do not think that 7200s are as necessary as they were back when density was lower, and they are still hot.

I want to do virtualization, and backups for some companies in town (off site backups)
DAMNIT CLIPPY!

too bad newegg still doesn't know how to ship HDs or the score on basket package hoops coverage out back the shippers :-)
the manufactures are even packing the disks in even smaller , but more bouncey packing. I do not see it as an improvement as I go local to get them because of that.
sure 64g impact when off and head parked, In ya dreams :-)
The one you picked is bare, so it will get a nice bubble wrap, how that differs I do not know.

I remember I was blown away when I read the Linux kernel source of the /dev/null device. I was expecting there to be some elaborate system of free()ing buffers, etc., but, no, it's just basically a return(). — Brian Minton 57 mins ago

Jeeze, we have ?

7:51 PM
@OliverSalzburg um why?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Do we have a ?

@studiohack Why we have it, or why do I think it's stupid?

Q: Should we delete the [homework] tag?

Stephen JenningsThe [homework] tag is a meta-tag, which is explicitly discouraged. Should we delete the homework tag from all questions? Although a question may be about homework, there's nothing useful gained by tagging a question "homework".

Time we reverse that and kill homework

8:46 PM
@random Removing a tag? I like it!

maybe we should remove too while we're at it; I'm tired of looking at the world from behind windows and doors
next up: pull the ethernet cable out of the tag indexing server in SE's rack

@allquixotic Retag to maybe?

or ;-)

8:59 PM

I remember my favourite tag...

@CanadianLuke wetagg.in/canadian-luke No longer exists :(

@OliverSalzburg I think I archived it on my blog somewhere

Q: Penalty for unexplained down-votes

AFHOften I come across perfectly valid questions which have been down-voted for no apparent reason, sometimes with no comments or answers at all. I don't think a down-vote should ever be made without explaining the reason, but if you want to continue to allow it, there should at least be a penalty ...

Q: Show comment count on search list

AFHSearch lists currently show the total votes, answers and views. I think the number of comments would be a very useful addition, possibly more useful in practice than the number of views. Questions frequently generate a lot of discussion without conclusive answers being reached, so it would be he...

TIL. There's a SElinux colouring book

A: Is SELinux important if I'm the only one who uses my computers?

spuderSelinux is for enforcing process types. This is not the same as user isolation. For a really simple guide to understanding, take a look at the SELinux coloring book (yes it really is a coloring book). https://people.redhat.com/duffy/selinux/selinux-coloring-book_A4-Stapled.pdf For a workstat...
