12:07 AM
woof

We have newscasters with less facial expression 0_0

12:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek wolve

e-wolve?

2:10 AM
I saw that. Super cool, eh?
though, least on mine, there's an option to set an admin password

too bad it can't print out an imp or something

Thats interesting
My printer does ipv6 but not dual stack

mine can do dual stack, but I don't have it networked... should probably think about that
I use it over USB

mine is networked so I don't need to keep a system running in that room to print...
(though, I leave 2 systems on all the time a lot of the time, so that's just slightly silly)

2:55 AM
ooh, that was silly
I don't normally read quora but the first answer to "Can I fight off a police dog is hillarious" quora.com/Can-I-fight-off-a-police-dog
Though... I doubt bad people taste good.

3:18 AM
Yea, I wouldn't want to go up against a police dog.

it's a police wolf :P get it right.... :P

Wow... $2.5b for Mojang. That's a ridiculous price.

Notch must be happy
Notchrosoft. >:(

Nope. He left Mojang.

ahh
I want Lessjang now that they're controlled by @Sathya

3:31 AM
The three founders are leaving.

good; maybe they'll suck now and MSFT will waste their money :D
they like doing that
see: Surface, Surface 2, Surface 3
(deliberately omitted "Pro" from those)

omg.. Windows Phone 8.1 includes a notification tray.

lul
aren't they dropping the "Phone" from the marketing? that should go over well with confused users
people will be asking on SU, "Hi I have Windows 9 on my Microsoft Lumia UnderpoweredCrap 8500pq. How do I install the app for X?"

heh
The best feature about the notification tray is the ability to turn wifi on and off EASILY.

I can't help but remark on how clear the display is (especially font rendering) on my Surface Pro (1) compared to my Panasonic Viera TC-L32DT30 LED IPS HDTV (1080p HDMI 1.4)
no clue why the desktop's font rendering is so awful, but it is. really. jaggedy as hell

3:36 AM
My brother is law's laptop is crystal clear on the desktop, but as soon as you open programs or anything that is behind a UAC prompt that window is immediately fuzzy.

tried fixing it by futzing around with pixel format in CCC, re-calibrating ClearType settings (couldn't tell a difference between one choice and the next), changing stuff in the menus...
the display has a ton of settings... backlight, brightness, HDMI color range, content type, color enhancement, C.A.T.S. (tempted to enable just due to acronym but it makes the display very dark), and some more stuff I'm forgetting

for some reason tvs suck at font rendering
its fairly well documented

yeah, I'm tempted to get a new monitor so I don't hate using my desktop for coding and reading/writing documents... I don't mind it for gaming at all because fonts matter less than graphics there, but it's bad for MS Word and web browsing especially

lol
get one of those korean ones.

I want a DisplayPort 1440p @ 120 Hz dedicated monitor (not a TV).... it would be amazing @_@

3:44 AM
er. those exist
I also seem to recall some of the other mods, maybe Ivo or Oliver actually own one ;p
oh, the 120 mhz part is tricky .-.

can probably go for 1080p @ 120 Hz
120 MHz refresh rate is not going to happen, sorry :P
that's a bit excessive

slightly

haha this is cool, I'm running a full Windows install with the fan off in my Surface Pro :P power profile set to "Passive" cooling mode... I guess it just throttles back whenever she gets too hot

lol
(and eh, I need to try playing one of the supreme commander games dual monitor ;p)

the main problems I have with the original Surface Pro are the limited disk space and the impossibility of using the type cover on any orientation other than on a flat desk... the 2 and 3 are supposed to fix those issues
I doubt they improved on the display very much. I mean, how could they?! it's already gorgeous
don't try to improve on perfection. just make the internals better
@_@ they made it 1440p
Microsoft you crazy

she certainly thinks so

lol
I have its cheap Chinese twice distance cousin. It is surprisingly useful
And yeah. But lady ada is cool :p

4:15 AM
whelp 156MB CSV file...
c'mon computer!

4:27 AM
I wonder how small that 156 MB CSV file would be XZ'ed
it can probably say "OK, now there are 67358 successive values of length 6 with a "," delimiter, and the values are:" to save repeated commas
or "there are 67358 successive values of length (y = 3x^7 + 4x^6 + 2x^5 + x^4 + 17x^3 + 8x^2 + 3x) with a "," delimiter, and the values are:"
long chains of polynomials (long enough to be precise, but not long enough to be longer to describe than the actual data) are used to describe non-linear repeated occurrences of symbols in advanced compression formats like LZMA.

Bob
o.O
@allquixotic but also 20% bigger along the diag
@allquixotic Fifty Shaders !!no
(the song's nice though)

Bob
5:06 AM
@allquixotic wat

@MichaelFrank: time to break out the linux text mangling utils?

Bob
(incidentally, one app I'm writing now uses a button in a WebBrowser control, because... I was using the WebBrowser control to display some HTML/CSS-formatted text, and they wanted a button in that page, and overlaying a WinForms button is even uglier... urgh)
(it's tied into the rest of the app through JS & ObjectForScripting & COM

@JourneymanGeek Nah, good ol' Excel opened it just fine. :P

1 hour later…
6:29 AM
Netflix in Germany! Yay

6:53 AM
Sweet…

@Mokubai I mean rendering of products. Some look real but some look like they are computerized which is not good when it comes to selling it on eCommerce website. Customer can tell right away that it's not real and was computer-rendered and this impression is something sellers try to avoid.
In 2012, a news report by Vincent Verweij for Dutch broadcaster Katholieke Radio Omroep revealed that the contents of at least 16,000 Iomega hard drives were publicly available on the internet, due to the drives being sold with their password security systems disabled by default.
Among those affected were KLM, ING Group and Ballast Nedam, who all had sensitive and confidential material leaked in this manner. Parent company EMC Corporation refused to comment, but Brian Gruttadauria, a spokesman for Iomega USA, acknowledged the failure and said future models (starting February 2013) would come with password security enabled by default, and clearer instruction to users about the risks of unsecured data.
Were these drives online and hacked or something?

@Boris_yo: Probably NAS/SAN type units

Bob

The full [uncensored] version of Left 4 Dead 2 is now available to users age 18+ in Australia. If you already own Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam, activate Left 4 Dead 2 - Uncensored and start playing the uncensored version of the game right away.
it's... it's a zombie game. rated R18+.

@JourneymanGeek Strangely relevant: security.stackexchange.com/questions/67439/…

yup
(and eh, I wonder how long before this sorta thing happens over ipv6 too)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek firewallpls

Oh, naturally
but Unlike ipv4, ipv6 firewalls arn't on many routers that support it

8:13 AM
"Hacking" in general, confuses me.
Hacking in the sense of: targeting individuals.

what

@TardisGuy: There's basically three reasons you would hack

@JourneymanGeek Money, Fame, Bitches

Firstly and traditionally, because you could. Sometimes you would actually use the system for your own use...
@OliverSalzburg: kinda ... exactly
secondly, you're a state actor and you want information.
Thirdly You have something that lets you profit from the hack. Information (again), or using the system for something like bitcoin mining. In this case, you'd be indiscriminate.

8:20 AM
Well, I could see myself hacking for the purpose of making a point; like a large company...
but never an individual.
Just because I can...
doesnt mean I do.
ITs just from my perspective that targeting an individual is not a show of skill.

It can be a fun game
Like sitting at a table with normal people and trying to guess their passwords
"Is it your sons name?" - "OMG HOW DID YOU KNOW?!?!?!"

lol
@TardisGuy: How do you even know who a random target system belongs to?

Well, intrinsically; a "random target" is unknown
Well, I suppose i dont have much against hacking wifi.

Precisely
and most hacks start with random targets
You get silly shit like this serverfault.com/questions/123175/…

lol
I see.
I dont even run anti-virus.
or firewalls.
All my security is done at software level.
shared drives, different passwords.
But I need my external connectivity for my phone -> Home network

8:36 AM
meh. Network level firewalls are probably a great idea
as is AV as an in case thing

just slows shit down.
File start -> Scanning safety -> Ok you can use it -> finally executes.
all that said...

I cant think of a good network activity logger..

I just stick a firewall at my router
then system level firewalls (though, amusingly, my linux desktop is much more locked down than my home server)

My IP address is through LTE cellular.
So any sofware to randomly attack is likely geared to iphone/android.

8:39 AM
Which exists most likely

Well cellphone hack.mods are my thing.
the only real way to hack either is social engineering or air data packet captures.
And that whole celebrity photo leak stuff...
Actually shocked me.
The only way they could have done that was to hack iCloud.
And that means apple has access to everyones iformation for viewing.
A master password.
Apple "genius"es indeed..

lol
Someone used an API and brute forced it
Which was a messup, but there is no master password

Well I dont mean literally.
I mean they have the ability, in which human hands and eyes can access data on icloud
Unless...
Someone hijacked a router at like... the emmys or something
Iphones probe for internet via wifi... which could result in learning passwords.

You could probably social engineer email addresses

Meh... ITs not how I would do it.
IT would take an ungodly amount of time.
and all the data was specifically iPhone

Bob
9:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek that's just stupid
@JourneymanGeek if a web API doesn't block or at least detect brute force attempts, then it's broken. period.

@Bob: The one on my dlink is turned off by default. My asus has none the last time I checked
@Bob: yup, but that's different from a standard password or a master password.

Bob
my Billion... I really have no idea

Most solve brute force with mandatory timed lockouts.
IE password wrong too many times in linux.

Bob
No idea if that "Firewall" option applies to IPv6 :P

Oh, that's how I deal with it too
3 wrong passwords and you're blocked

Bob
9:05 AM
And I won't be able to tell for... I don't even know how long.
@TardisGuy Obvious and very easy solution.
Hence why not having such protection is just plain stupid.

lol
@Bob: agreed

hmm
mmhm

Bob
Hm. It'll cost me... $311 for a return flight to Singapore :P

Wide input area \o/

lolwtf
How is yours black?!

I know, I was there...

I need to install that again
(especially on the linux box, since I've got chat opened up there most of the time)

I dont use firefox

IIRC it works with a chome extension as well
blah
@OliverSalzburg: I'm clearly distracted, but how do I install that again? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Install Stylish or Stylebot, depending on browser and taste

9:30 AM
installed stylish. added the raw view github page to the url box...

Should do it. I have a more complex pattern at home though
// ==UserScript==
// @name       Stack Exchange Chat Room Auto-Expander
// @namespace  github.com/oliversalzburg
// @version    0.1
// @description Automatically expands the room list in Stack Exchange chat.

// ==/UserScript==

setTimeout( function() {
	$( "#sidebar-content" ).find( ".more" ).click();
    console.log( "Expanded room list." );
}, 1000);
Neat

Oh. I mean the black theme

Yeah, I understand. I wrote that userscript a minute ago
Here's a step-by-step
Paste there, save, done

Bob
9:51 AM
@OliverSalzburg unnecessary! bad! :P

ahh
Direct URL import fails, but copypastaing itnto stylish works.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg $("#sidebar-content .more").click();

@Bob Why unnecessary?
@Bob Oh, that. Yeah I mostly copied from the SE chat.js

Bob
@OliverSalzburg extra .find

Bob
10:02 AM
@OliverSalzburg Oh, and here's the plain JS way:
[].forEach.call(document.querySelectorAll("#sidebar-content .more"), function(node) {node.dispatchEvent(new Event('click'));});

jQuery is loaded anyway

Bob
@OliverSalzburg :)
@OliverSalzburg yea, I did that more as an experiment
and discovered that Array.prototype.forEach doesn't work on a NodeList :(

1 hour later…
11:06 AM
blah
sigh
I was entirely justified in using grumpy cat to answer a meta question. That makes me oddly sad

12:03 PM
which one?

Yo guys

what is he even asking?

halo

12:18 PM
I guess he wants to filter out questions by new users the wrong way ;p
hm. actually
boom

nice

12:34 PM
;p
Thats actually one of the hard things about being a mod
as a high rep user, its actually a little easier to decide to delete something, than to answer, least for me ;p

12:51 PM
There are two different user or single user having two different profile might cross posted this on Unix-Linux & this on Superuser

Yeah, looks like it

Ubunto is a separate operating system. You don't install it inside of windows. — DavidPostill 3 hours ago
@jokerdino You're welcome
(enjoy the Ubunto!)
wow, I think my customer is going for a record of how many exotic/non-standard CPU architectures to use
I just learned that they use SPARC, Itanium, and zArchitecture CPUs in their systems
that's........

Bob
@allquixotic Is WUBI still maintained/updated for UEFI anyway?
IIRC it installs GRUB.
Fuck GRUB.
3

@Bob dunno

@allquixotic hahaha
@Bob I've said it before... GRUB is the devil

> 5.5 GHz hex core chips
R U KIDDING IBM?
IBM System z is a family name used by IBM for all of its mainframe computers. In 2000, IBM renamed the existing System/390 to IBM eServer zSeries with the e depicted in IBM's red trademarked symbol, but because no specific machine names were changed for System/390, the zSeries in common use refers only to the z900 and z990 generations of mainframes. In April 2006, with another generation of products, the official family was changed to IBM System z, which now includes both older IBM eServer zSeries, the IBM System z9 models, the IBM System z10 models, and the newer IBM zEnterprise. The zSeries,...

beast.... Xeon is a little tiny baby by comparison :D
well. maybe two of these would give it a run for its money: ark.intel.com/products/79209/…
you'll get much better parallelism from the Xeons too

If I recall correctly

Bob
@RoXaS that's iirc, not iitc

@Bob Typo's exist

I was on my phone ;p

@RoXaS wasn't sure if it was a typo or other initialism

It was a typo

@ThatBrazilianGuy May I introduce you to one of your countrymen? :P chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/17699304#17699304

@allquixotic: I might be talking entirely out of my ass, but I do believe that mainframes have a lot more internal IO and data throughput as well

@JourneymanGeek Aww yeah suck it bob :P

2:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek that's certainly one of their design goals, yes -- extremely high I/O-driven workloads is one of the hallmarks of mainframes, and sets them apart from HPC, since HPC is more about raw computation power
you spend more money on transferring data from point A to point B (and storing it, extremely reliably) on mainframes
@Bob nuclear lightning?

Bob
@allquixotic Power line.

@Bob O.o
wonder if it was positive lightning

3:18 PM
@Bob What's wrong with it :P

Bob
@HackToHell Mostly the way most Linux distros completely clobber the Windows bootloader with it, and then it's an absolute pain in the arse to remove.
Maybe more appropriate would be "fuck BIOS bootloaders in general".

lol
dualbooting sucks.

Bob
Ah, yes, who doesn't want a $50 wooden headphone stand?

lol
mine's about... 4 dollars...
and uses a sock as part of its design.

Bob
Might as well make one myself. Would be something like $2-$3 in materials...
> When you connect your computer directly to your DAC through USB, excess noise from your computer’s power supply can negatively affect what you’re listening to.
... ... ...
Yes, and you can clean that up with your anti-virus cables and magic pebbles.

3:23 PM
@Bob I was in agreement until I realized they were talking about USB instead of analog 3.5mm

Bob
Ok, these aren't quite as ridiculous: massdrop.com/buy/soundmagic-e30-earphones

I've heard "noise" from the computer (not sure the source) in 3.5mm headphones, especially on Core2 laptops

Anyone else reading reddit while you are supposed to be working?

USB ... just !!no

Bob
@allquixotic Yea, that's not uncommon.

3:24 PM
@RoXaS no, I'm chatting on RA while I'm supposed to be working
I prefer it (over working, and reddit)

:P
Well I'm on the front page of /r/aww

@Bob: 0_0
Thats kinda hipster
also, they should be using optical to avoid ground loops then ;p

I bet they say that bluetooth or wireless headphones give you cancer, too
come on, say it! you know you want to! silly people

;p
no no. Its WIRELESS

Bob
3:28 PM
Still waiting for the fort.

Its clearly going to pick up noise unless you run it in an anachroic chamber!

Bob
It'll probably be delivered missed tomorrow. The one day I won't be at home until just after the PO closes.

@Bob you need to get a sentient dog (just get one like @JourneymanGeek's breed, that should suffice) and ask him to sign for your package when the post comes :)

;p
@allquixotic: You'd be surpised how well that works

pawprint signature? :P

3:32 PM
;p
or just get a human to do it ;p
(but we almost never miss a delivery

@JourneymanGeek that would involve having actual relationships with other humans -- I don't know about Bob, but that's a fairly tall order for me.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's making a certain assumption there.

@Bob: well, our doorbell hasn't worked in years
@Bob: that there's someone at home?

I mean, Bob's a fox. Why would anyone like or trust him?
Foxes just like to steal your shit.

(clearly a small dog cannot reach the door, and for some reason we have no doggy doors in the house)

3:34 PM
They also like to tell you what they say, but that's a separate matter.
That needs to be a question on the show Jeopardy.
"Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow!"

Bob
@allquixotic :(

*ding* Jacob.
"What does the fox say?"
Correct!
@Bob Well, I guess other foxes like foxes.
That's something at least.

Q: Effect of downvote on reputation

smcShould downvotes result into bigger reputation loss than -2 ? I believe that compared to +10 for an upvote, -2 is negligible and it would be fair to increase it. Also, since the community is reputation-based and the purpose is to provide high-quality answers and accumulate knowledge, is it worth...

Bob
3:51 PM

@Bob Heh, yeah, vintage Tom.

@Bob yeah true rnough

I don't see how that's a grub issue. At least it clobbers and adds windows to the available OSs.
