wth is that

you clearly don't understand the syntax of s substitutions
!! s/wth is/I'm a camelleopard/

@allquixotic I'm a camelleopard that (source)

I don't even know that is meant to do..

@allquixotic I don't even know what that is meant to do.. (source)

I'm scared... make it stop

you're a programmer, right?

6:02 PM
yes

you know what regular expressions are, right?

aladeen

!! s/find/replace/ finds find in the most recent text string (searching left to right) and replaces it with replace
it can either be an ordinary string or a regex

Bob
@RoXaS awesome vid

what's "aladeen"?

Bob
6:04 PM
@allquixotic "HIV aladeen"

mine is better

Bob
from some movie. means both yes and no
!!maybe

oh ok :P

!!aladeen

6:05 PM
@RoXaS That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

k @Bob thanks for Morit Larsen

@RoXaS Information on interacting with me can be found at this page

6:06 PM
melikey

Bob
@allquixotic s/Morit/Marit/ :P

ah yes. couldn't read the tiny text on my phone across the desk

Bob

kinda reminds me of Damien Rice / Lisa Hannigan @_@

@Bob That installer never asks me where to plaxce the new installation

Bob
6:07 PM
^ from one of the other albums
@RoXaS you have to click custom
>

On the Which type of installation do you want? page, tap or click Custom.

lol there is no such option

Bob
o.O
@RoXaS is this a fresh or upgrade install?

Keep Windows settings, personal files and apps
Keep personal files only
Nothing

Bob
...that's an upgrade install

I want to install 8.1 on the now cleaned drive
Disk1

Bob
6:10 PM
@RoXaS Are you installing from the USB drive?

You tutorial thingy said not to

Bob
...huh?

Turn on your computer so that your current version of Windows starts normally, and then do one of the following:

If you downloaded Windows 7, browse to the installation file you downloaded, and then double-click it (often identified as an Application file under the Type column).

If you have a Windows 7 installation disc, insert the disc into your computer. Setup should start automatically. If it doesn't, click the Start button, click Computer, double-click your DVD drive to open the Windows 7 installation disc, and then double-click setup.exe.

Bob
o.O
@RoXaS Follow the Windows 8 one
sorry about that

...maybe last.fm was right
I like the album sure, but it's not the usual "tone" of music I listen to ;p too happy :P

Bob
6:13 PM
o.O
yea, I tend to go towards the happier music
well, I did last year

lol

Bob
more recently...

Its installing

Bob
spotify:track:4oLUveWSnU2IGxtXfnTOdc

That does nothing for me

Meaning thats not a link for me

for the same type of artist and genre as this (which isn't the only type I listen to), (female PYT pop singer), I tend to go for like:
Marie Digby - Better Off Alone
Sara Bareilles - Gravity
Brandi Carlile - If There Was No You
... and less of Ingrid Michaelson - Girls Chase Boys ;p

Bob
the Japanese vocals flow better though

I also listen to male singers :P which seems to be somewhat of a less popular thing for adult males of my generation for some reason @_@

Bob
@allquixotic raises hand

6:18 PM
U2 - Moment Of Surrender
30 Seconds to Mars - City of Angels
Boyce Avenue - The Scientist
Josh Groban - Galileo
Sylvan - Vapour Trail
//deliberately avoiding non-English songs ;p

Bob
I dunno. Had a couple of stints with Adam Lambert, Bruno Mars, Guy Sebastian and Muse in the past.

@allquixotic DAVE GROHL
<#
<3

looking at my music lists.. probably about 45% female, 55% male

Bob
I tend to go for full album (or artist) collections, rather than individual song playlists.
Especially for Muse. Those are meant to be played in order.

though I love male/female duets

6:19 PM
I pluck songs from everywhere
I also find it rather unconvenient that most music apps and software start by artist

same

But for people like you thats nice then

Bob
@RoXaS Heh, Spotify is per album.

I often listen to my "Starred" playlist on Spotify, but I also listen to individual albums sequentially sometimes
Sylvan is a terrible artist... IF you don't listen to it sequentially from start to finish

Google play music has a thumbs up playlist

6:20 PM
it's like a single 60-minute song broken up into bits and named

Bob
I've been starring more lately, but the songs on the list are just too different to listen to together.

so i thumb upped everything that I liked ever

I tend to start off by listening to my star list to get me in the mood for something (on Shuffle). then I'll wander over to that artist and listen to one of their albums.

Bob
@allquixotic Just skipped through a couple of the songs you mentioned. I like them :)

I tent to listen to this at work
Helpps me concentrate

Bob
6:22 PM
Hm. I want to start doing that.
But I'm honestly not sure if it's acceptable in my workplace.

I find that male Spanish traditional pop makes me concentrate at work @_@ don't ask me why
unless the song is too slow, then it puts me to sleep :D

Bob

@allquixotic Bibir la vida loca
@Bob Yeah i had that

Bob
@allquixotic Huh, good idea.

@RoXaS traditional pop, not that crap!

Bob
6:23 PM
lol

@allquixotic La camisa negra

traditional pop = vocal focused, usually full symphony accompaniment, heavy on the harmony, generally slow pace almost like jazz but less brass
like: Dyango - Morir de Amor
that's one of my favorite songs of late ;p
and favorite genres

@allquixotic youtube.com/watch?v=SVoNefPBoL0 << This is the original version that a dutch guy made a ccompletely different song with youtube.com/watch?v=UrQ_yMqbFlM

it's like jazz but s/brass/strings/g and with harmonic vocals ;p

Bob
I'm going to try to get some sleep (and convince myself not to buy that first-gen Nexus 7 refurb, ~$100).

6:25 PM
then I'll randomly just decide to hop into Lana del Rey and have her verbally/vocally f--- me
that's what the album sounds like, I swear @_@

Bob
'night. Good luck with the install, @RoXaS - I don't think we can expect any more problems.

@Bob So far so good
Just dont know what the bootswitcher will be like

@Bob don't!
first gen N7 has major NAND problems
get second gen at least

Bob
@allquixotic huh?

@Bob first-gen N7 NAND slows to a crawl with even light usage over a period of a few months
it's documented fact ;p

Bob
6:27 PM
o.O
noted. I'll avoid it then, thanks.

get the second-gen ;p

Bob
too expensive at the moment :P

note: I'm not suggesting you don't spend money, just that you don't spend money on crap

Bob
and I really don't need it

What comes first - 3D rendering or 3D modeling?

6:28 PM
Modelling

Bob
You render models. Without models, you have nothing to render.

Chuck Norris just renders and the models come into existence for him as he does

Bob

Bob
waitwaitwait, Panasonic smartphone?!

will I get bootloader similar to grub or something to switch?

6:30 PM
Pana!!noic smartphone

Bob
@RoXaS BOOTMGR (the Windows bootloader) can handle OS selection just fine

So I pay for one and another? I can't have 1 person do modeling and another 3D render of that model?

@Bob Okay i have faith

@Boris_yo sure you can, but you have to have a model to render first, unless your name is ChuckNorris_yo

Q: How to change the default delay on the boot menu from 30 seconds to 5 seconds on windows 8

antonio081014I saw my friend's computer wait for only 5 seconds on the boot menu screen (where you select which OS to boot), while mine delays for 30 seconds. How can I change this?

you can also launch msconfig.exe

6:32 PM

Bob
Visual BCD Editor and EasyBCD can also modify these

@allquixotic oh god no drivers!!

Bob
I prefer the former

> cameraphone
(from the URL)
!!wat

6:33 PM
so it's a camera first, then a smartphone? no thanks
though, I know some people at work who would buy it and be like "OMG LOOK AT MY MEGAPIXULLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111oneoneoneone" while waiting 5 minutes for their web browser to start.

Bob
@allquixotic it's more the bulkiness; high quality cameras can't really skimp on the CPU/GPU
2cm thick o.O
900 euros WHAT

they really skimped on the battery though :P

Bob
2,600mAh battery... that's a joke

@Bob it jsut boots into my old boot

Bob
about the same as my S4

6:35 PM
and why no 3 GB RAM?
and we're still doing this 16 GB NAND shit? seriously?

Bob
@RoXaS can you see the partition containing the new install?

David After Panasonic
"Is this real life? Is this going to be forever?" (in reference to 16 GB NAND)

@Bob From where?

Bob
@RoXaS from the old install you booted into

it randomly boots into one

Bob
6:37 PM
... O_O

@Boris_yo rendering is the final stage that doesn't really need a human at all, it just needs brute CPU power. You could have one person modelling individual items, an another laying them out in the scene and doing the work of animating (moving) the items and then rendering is just passing the scene and animation data off to a computer to do all the processing work...

Bob
when you're in one, go msconfig and look at the boot tab

@Bob both drives are visible

Bob
@RoXaS what's the timeout

@Mokubai however, if he's totally ignorant of the process to do it, he may need a human to have the know-how and software license(s) to actually perform the rendering :P

6:39 PM
@Bob 30 seconds

Bob
@RoXaS sure you're not hitting a key during boot?

yes

@allquixotic This is true/

Bob
@RoXaS so how many times have you tried rebooting?

@Mokubai How brute CPU power must be? And does it impact polygons/details of rendered model making it more realistic?

6:40 PM
@Bob Also the new installation doesnt set screen resolution
@Bob this will be 3 3th time

Bob
@RoXaS you need to install video card drivers for that
@RoXaS you can't make conclusions from a sample size of 2 -_-

@Bob Yeah I figured

the thirth time? I like that

@Bob Now its loads the new one again

firth, secoth, thirth, fourth, fifth... nice and consistent

6:41 PM
@allquixotic 3th time's the charm right

Bob
@RoXaS so, what did it load the first and second times?

First old one
Second new one
Third New one

Bob
so, fourth new one as well?
do you see the selection menu?

@Bob never have i seen any selection

Bob
o.O

6:42 PM
Also msconfig boot tab only lists one

Bob
ah.
you somehow ended up with two independent bootloaders

Awesome
Why have one when you can have 2!

@Boris_yo It's almost impossible to say how powerful a CPU you need. It depends on what package, how detailed the scene is, what post-processing effects are needed (to improve photorealism) and so on. To make modern animated movies they use entire farms of computers to do the rendering. For the TV series spin offs they sacrifice quality of animation for speed of rendering so they can bust it out faster. It's all dependant on what you want to achieve.

Bob
welp. quick patch-fix-thingy: find out what the other OS's drive letter is, and cmd as admin bcdboot Drive:\Windows

@Mokubai CPU??? rendering is dont by a GPU hopefully

6:44 PM
!! s/computers/EC2 spot instances/

Bob
as long as your BIOS boot order remains consistent, this should be fine from then on

Server error (status 500) occured (message probably too long)

(probably ;p)

@Bob 4th time i tried hitting f2 for boot order, but i was too late and now it booted the new one with correct resolution however

why maintain a farm of expensive computers that you have to upgrade every 2 years when you can just use an EC2 cluster? and shut it down when it's not doing any work, and it's free :)

6:45 PM
...

Bob
1 min ago, by Bob
welp. quick patch-fix-thingy: find out what the other OS's drive letter is, and cmd as admin bcdboot Drive:\Windows
that'll add the old OS to the new bootloader
then you should see the selection menu

@Bob So say I'm in the new one, I add bcdboot D:\Windows

@RoXaS I started out thinking about the original Toy Story film... but yeah, these days GPU render farms or as @allquixotic rightly points out some kind of disposable processing power for the animation
but the rendering itself is less man-time and more computer-time

Bob
@RoXaS yep

It says it fails

6:47 PM
@Mokubai Like this:

it's the modelling and scene animation that needs man-hours

Versus this?

@Bob Failure attempting to copy boot files

Bob
sigh

@Bob Are you getting tired of me already?

Bob
6:48 PM
@RoXaS wait, did you run as admin?

EEhm nope
lemme do thatr

Bob
lol
I was hoping it was simple :P

Yaay
xD
there are 2 now

@Mokubai would be cool if they had a distributed render-farm program that could give each frame to a separate compute node, then fire up a cluster of like 500 GPU instances of EC2 for 1 hour, render everything, collate, shut down :D
wonder if anyone actually does that

@Bob although still no switch screen thingy

6:51 PM
wonder how many GPU instances Amazon actually has. would be funny if you tried to get some instances and ${OTHER_STUDIO} was already hogging them all and you had to wait for them

@Boris_yo chances are that Avatar took an order of magnitude more processing power than Cloudy, and probably more time modelling, texturing and animating. Neither could be rendered quickly on a generic home computer.

Bob
@RoXaS go back to msconfig, verify that it's a 32-second delay

@Bob sigh its back to one listed

Bob
...wut

@Bob I hard reset
Could that be the issue?

Bob
6:53 PM
I'm confused now. Why would you do that?

@allquixotic I didn't know you could get EC2 instances for free... wonder how much it costs after a year...

@Bob I meant pressing the off buttons till the lights stop

HAMMERTIME!

@Bob redid the bcdboot thing

Bob
@RoXaS Why not shutdown normally?
@RoXaS Ok, this time, make sure you use the restart
not shut down

6:55 PM
@Bob I felt lazy
i set the delay to 31

So does saying stop mean it's

and did apply

Bob
remember Windows 8 shutdown actually logs off and hibernates

closed msconfig
it asked me to restart

Bob
so you can't change OSes without using restart

6:55 PM
Yeag got it

Bob
@RoXaS well, I wouldn't be surprised if the BCD is rolled back if shutdown/startup fails

They are nammed excactly the same
but i cen choose now
can
Thanks Gandalf

@Mokubai For me it was Final Fantasy with great CGI before Avatar.

Bob
@RoXaS you can rename with bcdedit, Visual BCD Editor or EasyBCD

cool

Bob
6:58 PM
bcdedit /sec description "some new name" for the currently booted OS

@Bob Thanks man... If you reply on that mailadress I will still owe you a pizza

Bob
lol, again, thanks for the offer, but it's not necessary
and with that said I really do need some sleep
bye

@Bob Well anytime you need a pizza remember there's a guy in the netherlands owing you one

we should keep track of how many pizzas people owe us
rlemon owes me one (or two)

@allquixotic owes me three (or four)
I think I came back at the right time :)

7:06 PM
wait, I owe you pizzas?
since when?!
oh, I get it. when people in Canada get helped by people elsewhere, they then "thank" that person by demanding pizza from them.

7:17 PM
What.
I want pizza.

7:36 PM
@nhinkle then move to Canada and get some help from someone here

Apparently that's the trick!

@Mokubai I have been checking portfolios of 3D modellers and renderers and surprisingly some products are very real while other are not. Why is that?

@Boris_yo I don't get what you mean. What products are not real?

@allquixotic I get pizza cause of how much I helped you... <shifty eyes>

@CanadianLuke when was this ?!

7:53 PM
I'm sure somewhere back there... Maybe a long time ago... In chat... Or a question on SU...
AHHH! THAT'S IT!
I helped beta test/break your bot :)
So you could learn, you see...

bah. lies.
it's well-established fact that you only come here when you need to help vampire, so, by logical deduction, you can't ever have helped me, since you were here to receive help only
!!;p

Fine, you owe me for taking away my !!godmode function :P

I'll have to sign up for it after lunch... BRB

8:01 PM
you're Bob? okay.png

8:48 PM
@Mokubai I think he means that some peoples renders look real, while others are obviously a 3D render.

9:17 PM
@Bob Holy crap O_O My company just deployed a company-wide app that everyone will have to use (6 figs # of employees) that deploys itself using a generic Microsoft ClickOnce page, appears to run on the .NET 1.1 CLR, then... asks you to log in using a WebBrowser control. You can't make this shit up.
Also, the download is like 70 MB, and it downloads a massive cache file once you login.
The only thing it appears to semi-sanely do is that it doesn't require admin rights to get it running. But still, this is braindead stupid. How hard is it to write a web app?
It seems that once you log in, the UI it displays is some kind of custom UI that's desktop-based (OK, so it's not just a simple Web UI in a browser control...), and it communicates with the backend using WCF (it displays the URL of the WSDL in the window :D)

9:50 PM
lol. the application lets you define your "skills" and offers 3 levels of competency: Experienced, Advanced, and Expert. and it has "nursing" right next to "node.js" in the list :D
everything from "Physics" to "Perl"; "Application Lifecycle Management" to "Apple"; "C" to "Catheters"
lol, there's "Nuclear Engineering" and "Wargames" in here too
oh good lord, now I'm very afraid... they have "Software" as an option O___O shall I proclaim to be "Expert" in "Software"??? ALL SOFTWARE???

Yes, do it.

We got everything! From Dentistry to DevOps!
How can you be an expert at a company? they list "Citrix"...
oh geez. the data set isn't clean, either.
"Functional testing" and "Functional Testing" (with a capital T) both exist
this thing is so full of win :D They have "Nintendo Wii" in there!
> plays games
earns valuable skills for company
