Planning on a 1tb drive and one of these logitech.com/en-sg/product/wireless-combo-mk220

12:18 AM
man... I really want to find out if that turtle survives. :<

12:43 AM
I hope they get the poor dear to a vet :/

1:24 AM
hm. There's a new user who was suspicious, but turned out to be ok. Her english is a bit crap though and I fixed some of it.

I know the one haha

Annoying things are her answers are borderline
superuser.com/q/805968/10165 and I find gems like this
"Oh, all I did was spill coffee on my system"

Bob
O_O
512k day is the unofficial title of an event that started on August 12, 2014. Multiple Internet routers, manufactured by Cisco and other vendors, encountered a default software limit of 512K (512,000 - 524,288) IPv4 BGP routing table entries, causing assorted outages at various data centers. Various IT professionals reported the issue on Internet forums, sometimes as just "512k", and under a Twitter hashtag of #512k. == Technical details == With IPv4 address exhaustion occurring, and the lack of an expected switchover to IPv6 by network operators, aggressive subnetting of IPv4 has taken place to...

1:40 AM
Coffee is goof for the system!

1:52 AM
Oh hello

@AlejandraGarcia Coffee is gross.

@AlejandraGarcia: Ahh, so you're a real person ;p

im trying to improve journey give me a chance hahaha

what's with the two accounts?

what two accounts?

1:53 AM
popcorn

@AlejandraGarcia: there's an account called Alejandra Moreno with the same ava, and ip address

get banned for wrong asking, newbie stuff :(

0_0
are you?
Nope, the account isn't blocked in any way

well the system says im unable to ask more or so, i dont really know

hm. Might be the new user "trickling"
I don't see any limits set though

1:56 AM
but im ok with this one

i should disable the other one, can be done?

You should get them merged. Use the 'contact us' link at the bottom
then you get the rep for both

good to know, thanks!

And don't worry about edits/comments
They're VERY good learning experiences.

1:58 AM
i dont mind, i want to improve so its a good thing.

(I learnt to use capital I for referring to myself cause someone kept following me around and correcting myself)
Also, I guess you're not a native english speaker so, I'd suggest adding english spellcheck dictionaries ;p
(I use them loads myself, though for other reasons.)

hahaah yeah im from spain, and yeah i just did

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Huh, I need to start doing that :P

@Bob: following me around and editing me?

@JourneymanGeek someonequixotic? :P

Bob
2:00 AM
Hm. Intel SSDs are quite cheap now.
I want a SSD cache on my desktop, after the extreme success on the laptop :P
Problem is, I don't have any SATA3 ports to spare...
I could move one of the current HDDs to a SATA2 port, but it's in fakeRAID, so I'd have to tear apart the RAID... ugh

@JourneymanGeek I use them loads, and I'm a native English speaker! :P

@Bob: sata card?

Bob
@MichaelFrank I spend most of my time ignoring American spellcheckers.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: no.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Considering it.
Could have cooling issues, though, right next to a GPU.

2:02 AM
(though, in the department of wierd crap, I was looking at a mini pci-e sata 3 card...)

@JourneymanGeek i before e, except after c... or pretty much whenever you think it should be.

Bob
only PCIe 1x...
the one on the left is next to the GPU fan intake, the one to the right is just behind the GPU
right one is likely better, but still not great
Also, PCIe v2.0 with a single lane is a bit slower than SATA3 :\
and PCIe SATA wouldn't support ISRT
...I'm not even sure if my mobo supports it
@JourneymanGeek Wait... what o.O
No mSATA?

Hillarious part - I think they support backplanes
so... you could, in theory, run 8 hdds off it
.... actually quite a lot of motherboards DO come with msata...

@JourneymanGeek that left port is SO crooked.

@MichaelFrank: I was trying to understand how you would fit it in a laptop ;p

Bob
2:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek the newer ones

@JourneymanGeek uhh.... what?

@Bob: Its a differenciator. Asus uses some wierd pci breakout for wifi

@MichaelFrank: Clearly you missed my mad scientist phase.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I really wouldn't trust my data to this thing.
Also, the soldering looks shit.
What is this crap?

2:13 AM
Yea, that's realllllly ugly..

Bob
Yea, anything I'm gonna store data on I do care about the quality of (looking at you @allquixotic with the dodgy SSD-the-speed-of-MicroSD :P)

So this is cool!

@Bob: I wouldn't either
BUT Its cool that some maniac decided "I know, we need a 2 port sata card"
Oh, then there was that maniac on G+ I can't find who put a PCIe video card into an old PIII with a pci pci-e bridge
and the entire article was in hungarian
translate.google.com.sg/… The translation is a bit naff, but yo can see what he's up to

2:34 AM
aww
Roomie sniffed at the hot water bag and demanded it be warmed up for his use ;p

@Bob haha yeah
strange phenomenon of being lulled to sleep by Air Crash Investigation episode @_@

@allquixotic: what SSD is that? 0_0

the dreams you have in that dozing period while periodic sounds of people screaming and jet engines crashing is being played in your headphones...
that episode felt like it was 3 hours long...

i should buy a SSD

@AlejandraGarcia: They are awesome ;p
@allquixotic oh, that.
er

2:41 AM
and expensive!

crappy ones aren't worth the effort

@AlejandraGarcia: Well, I sort of got mine free....
well I ended up paying 5 dollars for shipping

new BSOD in windows 8 is quite interesting

Well, not hugely so. You don't need a big one, and with a good one, performance is much better anyway
Frowny screen of death?

that's my gravatar :P

2:43 AM
im reading an user trying to unlock his processor with just a paper in the pins

@AlejandraGarcia: must be those binned AMDs ;p

seems to be an intel

like that guy who was running the only 5-core processor

where they disabled failed cores or disabled cores depending on demand, and left them trivially unlockable through bios

now he is crying coz its not working anymore

2:44 AM
oh, that won't work
apparently intel actually burns fuses when they disable parts

@allquixotic is that worth coupling with my actual SSD?

@MichaelFrank no
it was a drive of last resort for a budget NUC
the SSD inside my Surface Pro is an order of magnitude faster

@allquixotic: eh, I was considering one of these dx.com/p/… when I thought I needed a mssd for mine
slightly more expensive but...

@MichaelFrank if the moral standard is to cover up women and blow up all the white people people who don't believe like them, then yeah, access to the internet might serve somewhat towards making people think that stuff like that might not be the best idea in the world :P

2:49 AM
i dont know why my flash plugin keeps backing to 50% volume even the comuniccate level are disabled, jeez.

@allquixotic: the Iranians arn't too bad with that.
Actually outside of funding a few terrorist organisations, and one loony leader that they got rid of, they're pretty civilized for a semi-theocracy
"Grand Ayatollahs" are basically the equivilent of a cardinal
(and gee, didn't the last pope keep saying stuff like that?)

@JourneymanGeek I never said catholicism was a better religion; it's got some equally wacky ideas such as in the area of homosexuality and the treatment of women
"Religion X is insane, but hey, Religion Y is insane too; therefore, being insane is OK!"

@allquixotic: I'm saying the individual is insane, and out of touch with reality
it shouldn't be a reflection on the culture

...if the individual happens to be a revered leader of the entire religious cult and commands the respect and mostly-unquestioning following of the vast majority of the adherents, you have to wonder :P
if they're just some low guy on the totem pole, who cares

hmm
I suppose

2:58 AM
it only becomes a problem for lots of people when you get the wacky ones representing the deeply held beliefs of a large proportion of the earth's population, making decisions on their behalf and using the religion's own myths as a justification for that decision, rather than reason or observation or evidence
when their decisions or commandments or what have you start to impact real people in day to day life, it becomes an issue
if they are just making decisions and commandments within the mythology of the religion, things that affect their prayer or worship or whichever, that's fine

"In answer to a question published on his website, Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, one of the country’s highest clerical authorities, issued a fatwa, stating “All third generation [3G] and high-speed internet services, prior to realization of the required conditions for the National Information Network [Iran’s government-controlled and censored Internet which is under development], is against Sharia [and] against moral and human standards.”"
1 - if the internet is so evil WHY DOES HE HAVE A WEBSITE?

also, why is 2G apparently fine?

2 - this is clearly political... he's basically saying "The internet is fine, as long as the government controls it
beats me
maybe its slower, and you have to wait for the great evil's messages to slowly load?

the implication is, if you use some lower-speed service like dial-up or 2G, then it's fine -- even though you can access the exact same information, you just have to wait longer
unless streaming video is the concern, in which case, everybody in Iran will have a video downloading plugin for Firefox that downloads their youtube videos overnight

;p
I'm pretty sure he just got fed the line by his handlers, and couldn't tell a keyboard from a hedge hog chicken

3:03 AM
it almost seems like it's a bold-faced lie, that 3G isn't against Sharia or moral and human standards at all, but he's wielding that as a stick to rally support for some political or financial purpose

Oh, that's certainly the case

it would be approximately the 10,000,000,000th time that a religious figure has done this, I estimate

heh, I can't actually remember any of mine doing that

problem is, even after the political maneuvering is long finished, people will be referring back to that and wondering if it's still the case

yup
(then again, most proper hindu religious leaders don't use computers, or bother with worldly things)

Bob
3:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...how does that even work?

@Bob: bridge chip translates pci-e commands to pci
PROBABLY knocks down the transfer speed

ya think?

Bob
@allquixotic heh, I pulled an all-nighter watching a bunch of ACI episodes at one point. the safe ones, thankfully.
fell asleep ~ 6 AM

@Bob I've been watching a lot of "no survivors" ones lately :/

In fact, some late model PCI cards were PCIe cards with a built in bridge chip

Bob
3:07 AM
@AlejandraGarcia Intel recommended. Samsung decent. Stay the heck away from OCZ.

and MyDigitalSSD!

Yeah i should buy a SSD i think my HDD its about to die soon.

@Bob I have an OCZ, but it was given to me.

@MichaelFrank so someone really wanted you to lose your savegames... that's unfortunate... are you sure this person likes you?

@allquixotic It only has games installed on it.

3:09 AM
how longs takes to boot? D:

With samsung the non pro models are pretty good bang for your buck wise. The pro models are probably on par with intel.

Bob
@AlejandraGarcia You should always have backups, regardless of your storage medium.
SSDs can all suffer sudden failure too.

@AlejandraGarcia: bloody fast ;p

@allquixotic *Blizzard Games :P

Bob
OCZ is particularly notorious for controllers burning out (at least, they were a few years ago)

3:09 AM
@AlejandraGarcia My computer boots in about 15 seconds.

@allquixotic: meh, I think most savegames are cloudified now.

i dont know if this is very cheap or just crap:

http://tiendas.mediamarkt.es/p/disco-duro-ssd-de-120gb-ocz-vertex-460-25-pulgadas-sata-iii-1243540

any boot time speedup I might get is completely obliterated by "Booting the controller kernel.......... / | \ | / ..." messages on boot (RAID Option ROM)

Bob
@AlejandraGarcia My laptop has the slowest HDD I've seen in a decade. I added a mSATA SSD purely as a cache drive, and boots went from >30s to <15s. Hibernation with Rapid Start went from ~10-15s to ~3s

@AlejandraGarcia: I'd avoid ocz if I could

3:11 AM
um why

!!define reliability

they just got bought over so they're probably trying to clear stock. They have pretty bad failure rates and I don't think toshiba honours the warranties.

@allquixotic reliability The quality of being reliable, dependable, or trustworthy.

OCZ engineers had to learn that word, then they were like "ohhhhhhh.... sounds useless"

how about kingstone?

3:12 AM
kingston is alright

Bob
Kingston is decent.

they're meh... not a fan of Kingston products but hit or miss

though... I think someone has been testing these things to failure

Bob
I'd still recommend Intel first.

Intel if money is no object, samsung pro is money is less of an object, and you want a first rate drive, anything else samsung if you want something good, reliable and isn't going to get flogged too much

Thats not right... why arn't the lights on?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I ended up with a Samsung EVO cause money :P
@JourneymanGeek More recent: techreport.com/review/26523/…

@Bob: same reason I have an 840, sorta

@AlejandraGarcia Put some coloured lightbulbs and you could have a disco.

850 Pro is awesome, wish I could use it at home but it's dedicated to making my work laptop not suck by being the page file

Bob
3:16 AM
It's TLC, but it should last long enough. And I'm mostly using it for transient data anyway.

The 840 sounds like it died due to something other than nand failure tho

is that walter white?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, that's worrying.
NAND failure is nice and predictable.
Unpredictable (usually controller) failures are just as bad as HDDs.

@Bob: its way past its rated lifespan tho

Bob
3:18 AM
Well, maybe slightly better; easier to professionally recover. But unless you have $thousands to spare...

and blah, Thats why I have a a distributed collection of spinning rust drives ;p

Bob
I don't understand why all those SSDs fail to mount after a power cycle.
If they fall back into a read-only state, that could very well crash the OS before you get a chance to recover anything.

@Bob: I wonder if they're just overheating ;p

@AlejandraGarcia he uses a separate phone for each cell phone call, so why would he be in the market for a smartphone?

and somehow the temperature change causes damage, ala the old nvidias

3:22 AM
@AlejandraGarcia yew tinypic

he is retired, he deserves a fancy phone.

Don't forget, those drives are not designed for a 24/7 duty cycle

Bob
@JourneymanGeek According to that article, Intel at least has designed their drives to fail to mount after a power cycle, after falling into read-only.

@Bob: intel essentially only makes enterprise drives ;p
wait, what?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Apparently their enterprise versions don't do the fail-to-mount.
See: first page of techreport.com/review/26523/… under the last graph.

3:23 AM
Thats just wierd

Bob
Oh damn, price went back up.

@Bob Damn, I was considering it...

wait, why does the article talk about 800 TB, Petabyte and such, for those comparisons, but the 850 Pro is only rated for 150 TB?

Bob
o.O apparently those use the same controller as some of the OCZ drives known for failures... ... ...
@allquixotic they went far past the rated writes :P

ahh

3:27 AM
@allquixotic: its a test to failure. ;p

no ahh-stars? I did that deliberately :(
2

(I'm at about 10tb of writes, but I've got VERY conservative spare space settings so ....)
I do have it set up that most of my incoming files (downloads, steam) are on my 3tb drive, torrents are on another system, so the main transient file usage is probably the pagefile

Bob
I'm somewhere around 150 GB after a week.

good night guys, cya.

Night!

Bob
3:34 AM
bye
don't forget to visit :P

I got this box set up on that drive 18/10/2013 ;p

Whee finally Implemented OAuth for this topcoder.com/challenge-details/30045449/… :P
One day to figure out how to use Directory API

ooh
excellent. Turns out I can optimise my trip out today, and avoid carrying around a ream of printer paper.

mmmm that was a good banana! :D

One banana two banana three banana split!

Bob
3:41 AM
o.O

man, swatting away the grammar pedants these days is like swatting flies!
they're absolutely everywhere @_@

(paper's cheaper at a store nearer to my place, which also has my usual ATM. HOWEVER, its more efficient for me to go to an atm near the computer mall, draw money there, make purchases, go to the nearer mall by train, buy paper and take a bus back)

Bob
o.O

@allquixotic: got edited? ;p
(not to mention, they don't actually allow dogs on public transport...)

@JourneymanGeek nah, comment nitpicker.

3:49 AM
ahh
I might skip the paper tho, I pulled my back

speaking of printer paper: I printed a 350-ish-page PDF book for a coworker on my laser printer at home.. took me multiple tries to get it right
printer is manual duplex, and apparently both the printer driver and Acrobat can independently try to bookletize the booklet, and if you have them both do it, you end up with four pages of text on each side of each sheet of paper

and Adobe's method makes the printer print every other page upside down

manual duplex sucks

so I told Adobe to print normally and HP's driver to print in booklet mode
there's something like 94 pieces of paper in the successful print, two pages to each side of each sheet of paper
that's a 4:1 paper to page ratio
but I have to take the pages into work and use a paper cutter to cut the paper in half

3:52 AM

@JourneymanGeek nice selfie

Bob
@allquixotic I've had to do separate odd and even prints before to get the booklets right...
I like being a grammar pedant! :P

@Bob I just told it to print the whole thing -- finally got it right -- test drove it on 10 pages at a time to start
got it wrong like 4 times though :(
and now my black toner cartridge is low!
definitely charging this guy like $20 for this -_-

lol
@allquixotic: we tend to do those sorta thing at copy shops

Bob
3:54 AM
yea, I had this short pdf to test orientation before major prints

actually, its one reason I keep 'disposable' USB keys around

also did you guys hear about Haswell-E? it's "out" apparently, though good luck finding any sites that have it in stock
possible xmas purchase....? who knows
unlikely given that we are spending most of our discretionary money on baseball games

@JourneymanGeek Like GIGS.2.GO? gigs2gousb.com

Naw. Mine are like bare metal cases. Even cheaper per gig

Bob
OW sells 8GB drives here for $5-6 each

4:03 AM
XD. It'll take a while I suspect

Bob
take a while?
the OW ones are SanDisk

@Bob ;D

For the haswell e to hit market?

@allquixotic :P

@MichaelFrank ;P

I've spent all day installing and uninstalling this bloody application. -_-

@HackToHell Almost certainly fake.

@Bob "but not limited to,the" no spaces. Obviously faked.

I am a bit disappointed. A lot of the weirder cooler stores are gone :(

@JourneymanGeek I use... about 2 GB per hour?
Hm. That's... under 20 TB/year assuming constant usage.
Yea, this'll survive many many years just fine :P
> MTBF: 1.5 million hours
hm
not sure what kind of usage they're assuming
considering SSDs don't really die from just being connected and powered on
heck... how do they even calculate a MTBF of ~170 years?

7:18 AM
;p
I assume the test to destruction, and assume more forgiving duty cycles?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek They don't even specify a write endurance.
Well, not that I can find anyway :\

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Let's that one into the ? :P

A: can't ping VMWare 9 workstation running Win 7 on Win 8 host (or from other machines)

M.Naeem SattarI was facing the same problem.. Neither I could ping VM from host machine, nor I could connect sql server installed on host machine, from VM. I just disabled the windows firewall on VM and everything started work fine. My host machine is Win7 64bit with AVG and VM is WinXP.

Q: Spider ICS on the board

EyinlaMy Dell laptop fell down and could not come up again. When I took it to my Mechanics, he said it has Spider ICs problem on the board. what should I do? what exactly is the function of Spider IC? Can it be fixed?

Its java. You're already insane

Directory.Builder extends Abstract xxx which in turn extends abstract yyy
Trying to find a function in this is soo damn annoying
And this is to get a fucking list of groups associateg with an account

Hah. QUACK!
turns out its yum_debug_dump and yum_debug_restore
and I needed to tar up that sucker since the filename isn't windows compatible

Q: click more than one pixel at once in Windows

Ramin FiroozI want to click more than one pixel at once. for example: if I click in an application, it simulate X pixels (from Left,Right,Up & Down) beside the current mouse position. obviously it should avalable with a shortkey to prevent problems.

Buy a stereo mouse :-)
@HackToHell that is nice of adobee to assist with such things, only problem will be it takes an extra 50million lines of code to use thier versions :-)

@Psycogeek Brackets is actually nice !
